What’s Going on with Chanel Watches & Why You Should Care

- What Tudor, FP Journe, MB&F & Romain Gauthier have in common? Ah, yes, a significant investment from Chanel. Whether it is Tudor with their movement arm of the business - Kenissi - or if you are an independent like MB&F, FP Journe and Romain Gauthier - Chanel has given a pretty sizeable investment. But why? What is going on with Chanel and the J12, what is going on with Chanel Movements? What is happening with Chanel watchmaking?!

Oh BOY, I am looking back at this video thinking "boy my eyes look red" haha! I have a 3 month old who is doing his part to make sure I never get a full nights sleep ever again ;)
Wait until he becomes a teenager, and you'll have no sleep and no food 😅
I’m amazed at how well your eye healed after you got hit with the car-missile!
Don't worry, it gets better... Then they turn into teenagers. Good luck 😂
More fool you LOL
Yeah I can see butt whooping going on, but you are doing great. Think you are moving into another mode that suits you!
I think we need to start taking Hermes seriously, amazing watches and designs
Yeeessss!!!!!
Seriously
I like the Hermes designs both male and female. It’s great that Chanel are investing in movements but somehow the designs don’t resonate with me as much
I AGREE COMPLETELY! This feels like the next video I need to make in this series!
I do wonder if I’m too old to wear Hermes though 😅 Maybe Omega or Grand Seiko are more age appropriate 🧙♂️
One thing I learned (after speaking with some of the brands working with Chanel) is that Chanel is relatively easy to work with. Meaning that they don't meddle or try to control how a brand operates. This could be one of the reasons why indie brands are willing to work with them. A great friend to have when times are tough.
Now THIS IS HUGE! Thank you sooo much for sharing this!
It's wild - any brand would be more than happy with a name like Chanel but fit them to be an easy client? Now that's just a bonus
I think the hesitancy around fashion brands like Hermes, Chanel, and LV... who are now making some seriously interesting time pieces is that some people just don't trust a fashion brand with watches because they have other aspects of their business that generate greater amounts of revenue and if the watch making arm isn't sucessful that they wouldn't hesitate to pull the plug. Where as with a watch making company, it's their sole focus so they are invested in making the products better. At least I think that's the perception.
There's also the fact that they have a lot of low end products. KIA could make an amazing hypercar but no one would call them a performance car brand if most of their sales come from $10k budget cars.
Yes! And I think this was always my perception as well! But I think my view is slowly changing on this! Trying to be more open minded to things and the more I speak to different people the more I realise, watch brands aren’t necessarily always reinvesting back into better products. There’s 1 conglomerate specifically that I’ve not heard anyone have a good view of.
100% agreed!
Chanel also collaborated with Audemars Piguet on the J12 H2129 & H2918 powered by the AP3125 automatic calibre.
Really?
Really ❤
I actually own the J12 in black ceramic… feels great on the wrist, the bezel action is phenomenal, screw down crown with 200m water resistance and looks absolutely stunning doing all that
Glad that Chanel is getting some love. Bought my wife a J12 back in 2008, and has been running great till today. Then got her another one a few years back with the updated movement. Fashion houses are definitely getting serious in watches, you can see from LVMH, Hermes, etc.
I've been watching for years. Finally subbed. Chanel is just one fashion house that's making the transition to serious watchmaker.
Britt, your videos are soooo welcome. Pleasant, lighthearted, informative, and all wrapped in fantastically well-edited video. Suuuperb.
Great story. Very cool to see a fashion brand get serious about watchmaking.
I love watching your videos to keep myself updated on the world of watches 😊
Whaaaat! Thabk you so much! I’m so glad you enjoy my weird little channel!
Great original content! More of this please!
SALTY! I was thinking of you when I made this! I thought “this is going to be right up Salty’s street!”
I love making videos like this! 💕✨
I really like how you take on topics that might be considered a bit controversial. You’re fearless and I’m always ready to see what you are going to cover next. Awesome content-keep up the great work! 🥃
Very nice video Britt. Cartier, Bulgari, Hermes and now Chanel - these are truly the legit big four of "affordable" watches from the major fashion houses, imo. LV makes some super high-end horological pieces, but alas will likely never be affordable enough for most collectors.
It’s so true! I really think Hermes should have been the first video in this series! They are the brand that I think of first when talking fashion watch brand taking horology seriously! A part 2 has to come with Hermes!
Chanel is an independent brand and in a world if conglomerates that adds a whole lot of respect for me.
I really liked this style of format and the abrupt ending. would be exciting to have another big player join the watch game imo.
Ahhh thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed! I think I might do more abrupt endings! 🤔 more video time for content! And less intro/outro
Really enjoyed this video, and I'm so glad you're back in real time, as it were! Especially given how exhausting everything must be right now... 👍
Ahh thank you! It’s so good to be BACK! As fun as it is to make listicles…. 🤣 it was time to get BACK to the real work! It’s great making videos like this again. I was getting sooo bored of watching tv whenever the baby was sleeping! It’s good to be back in the world of watches!
As a watch enthusiast I'll always appreciate a good comment directed to the watch I am wearing
But at the end of the day, I'll buy what I like, it doesn't matter what others might think
I can gather enough knowledge to make an informed decision that caters to me, if wrong, yeah i'll deal with it.
Love the LBD worn in a Chanel watch review - very classy. Hermès next with a Birkin bag?! I don’t know enough about the luxury goods market but I’d be interested to know how this is playing out in a Chanel, LVMH, Richemont arm wrestle. We are only interested in watches but they seem to be playing 3D chess across several different markets.
I’m 67
Loving the Santos de Cartier and they were always seen as primarily a jewellery company.
But my mom had a ring watch (mechanical) back in the 60’s with a cover over the dial.
Wow, I have never heard of a "Ring Watch" - sounds cool!
I love my J12 in matte black. never thought it was a fashion brand but a work of art.
We need to remember that anyone can buy any watch that they want to.
Surely that's the ultimate 'taking a watch seriously' and the only one that really counts?
Another thing is that people need to look at individual pieces and not brands. Invicta is a good example of that, and the Santos of course ; )
I take Bulgari seriously as a fan, but do not have that money to spend on their minute repeater Octofisimo thingy.
The problem the fashion brands face is that there is always a non fashion brand that is front of the queue for most peoples money.
They are basically expensive novelties, and the mainstream brands do those too.
Monsieur is pronounced more like Mesieur (Since it's literally he french word for gentleman).
Just putting it out there for general knowledge and I have no problem with people pronouncing anything in any way they want.
Love the videos
🤣🤣 ahhh thank you! Trés désolé!
Channel, Hermes, LV, and Bulgaria have been investing in their horology department great these past years. They are definitely going to be even better in the future with all the investment in other manufacturers and watch makers.
great video, thanks! also the visuals used by chanel for their watches are so fun!
Great take, gringa! Thanks for helping me learn something everyday
Ahhh thank you! This comment has made my day! 💕🎉
You make a good point. I think that years back a few big names in the fashion industry launched watches that were clearly not worthy of their price point, just tacking on their brand logo to a generic watch with scant attention to design to make a fast buck. The problem with that is it created a negative market perception that still remains, so now that fashion brands are actually taking watchmaking seriously, watch geeks are still eyeing them with suspicion. On the plus side, I think they will have appeal outside the watch geek community, so I can see them selling well enough, and in time the better brands, once they have a proven track record will even make it to the good graces of watch geekdom.
Why should watch geeks take them seriously, regardless of how good their watches are? We prefer actual watch companies, especially ones with history. It is what it is.
@@lamentate07 "We" should take them seriously *if* they start making seriously good watches. Consider them the same way as a new micro-brand. They don't get the assumption of quality/respect (that an established brand might hope would come from their name), but if they go on to consistently demonstrate their seriousness by making great watches, then they'll have earned respect.
Very cool to see a fashion brand get serious about watchmaking
I recently purchased the new J12 I loved the new model as it’s beautiful and self winding at last. Also I purchased the large size with diamonds so its lots of fun 🤩
Well done, Britt! Excellent video
Very cool, will definitely be paying attention to Chanel going forward
Excellent video! Very very informative. I’ve not seen anyone else cover this. Thank you!
Fashion brands upscaling their watches: this is a move to appeal to affluent female buyers who generally don't identify with more 'masculine' brands like Rolex etc. Cartier, Longines and Omega (especially in Asia) have this market cornered for now, but fashion brands could possibly chip away at them in the future because they have more brand recognition for these customers.
You're the best, Gringa!!! I'd love it if you did a video on Ralph Lauren's horology journey, because they've been making some amazing watches and no one seems to be noticing. Keep up the great content!!!
Quality and Design should be paramount. Name supposedly represents that. At one point, Rolex was the new kid on the block and Louis Breguet was looking for a job. If Chanel invests in the quality and design of its watches, that’s awesome! Fashion brands generally serve fashion tastes and sometimes more money than sense, but here we see Chanel wanting to rise above that and join the ranks of high horology. I applaud the effort and look forward to future creations. And I would say the same thing if “Invicta” decided to go up the same path. (And no, I’m not equating Invicta with Chanel.) Excellent video. 😎⌚️🍸
Chanel has a "Caliber 5" - they need to make a watch incorporating a perfume theme somehow to pair Caliber 5 with Chanel N°5!
Thank you BP. Please continue to be our spy on the fashion brands
That was fascinating and I learned quite a bit. Thank you.
Huh, I was just wondering about the J12 this summer! A 38mm ceramic diver with basically a Tudor movement, and really low used prices? It seemed too good to be true.
I did not know they straight up own Bell & Ross and are invested in MB&F though 🤯
Would love to see you do a review Chanel j12. Love the channel Brittany
Their latest edition of J12 being a few years old.
A few things they did right.
38mm
Female lug to lug caters to smaller wrists sizes
COSC movement.
Best white (retention)
Ceramic is light too.
Symmetrical indices with acceptable date placement
Things not so good
Thickness, with new movement and glass back (previous gen doesn't) it became thicker (over 12mm)
No on the fly micro adjustment
I love their chromatic colour the most, seems like it won't come back.
Auntie Britt!! With the exception of Cartier and their horological history, I have always shied away from fashion house watches. The J12 is an interesting watch, and the Premiere is a handsome watch also, but neither really speak to me. Even if the J12 has a model with a 4:30 date window! Love live the Cult(s), and 4:30 date windows.
Well, well, well if it isn't my FAVOURITE NEPHEW!
@@BrittPearceWatches But it gives symmetry to the indices
Back to the basics. If you like the watch. Buy it!
Does not matter what everyone else say.
Life is too short to take opinions too seriously.
Enjoy what you have to the fullest. Your wrist, your watch. It makes you feel great and that's most important.
Both Chanel and Chopard are leading the way. Both offer spectacular jumping hour movements with fine finishing equal to or better than the Big Three. Both sell for $50K depending on materials.
I really liked the deep dive into the stake holdings of Channel, that really gave your video a unique take. Cheers!
I love my Dior VIII. I really also love a lot of the Grand Bal with the front rotor. I looked at the J12 as well because the Dior is a little esthetically similar. I think the J12 power reserve is much stronger.
I still come across people who insist Cartier is a fashon brand and I have to hit them with facts. Bvlgari makes the most amazing watches. Chanel buying up stakes in watch brands gives them a great future
The J12 Automaton is fantastic. That is clearly taunting a particular group. They are saying yeh we are a fashion brand, but look what we have.
Nice video Britt. Btw, 250k subs? Whaaaat? I was here at like 20000 subs. Well played. Your voice is so relaxing.
The jumping hours is beautiful.💯👍
Great video on Chanel and abrupt ending was "chef's kiss" as you say ;)
I really like the videos where you’re busting the inconsistencies in watch snobbery. You convinced to take Chanel more seriously in the future! Keep it up!
Chanel has their own manufacture since 1987 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland where they make their own high horological pieces and movements. That’s 33 years, not too bad…..
We may only be another channel, and not Chanel, but we just wanted to quickly introduce ourselves: we are Harris watches from Germany. We have just started... our watches are probably unlike anything you might have ever heard of or seen before. If you share our kind of humor, that is! We are into music and are openly sarcastic. Regards!
I’ll always look at Chanel and Hermes in much better light than Hublot. Shoot I’d say it’s giving Cartier a run for the money. Unfortunately I’ll not be giving any money to these brands because they are painfully French.
I didn’t even know Chanel made watches. I had a look, very interesting. They certainly have more possibilities in women directed watches that can still have an automatic movement and a bezel!! They designs are very Chanel in character and design which is the point….so great! The ceramic bracelets are a great idea. I wonder how scratch resistant they are?
If you buy a watch for it's monetary value and never wear it to sell it later, you're an investor, not a watch enthusiast.
You buy a watch because you like it, because it looks nice (according to you) on your wrist, it makes you feel special... It's all about emotions, wether it's a Casio Calculator with 7 alarm tones or a A. Lange und Söhne Zeitwerk with striking hour.
I think this serious tone and informative reporting is quite unique.
Chanel also owns G & F Chatelain, who are a high-end case and bracelet manufacturer.
They make all the cases for Chanel + Bell&Ross and make some of the best ceramic parts in the watch industry.
Chanel J12 has their in-house Chanel font (typeface) and it is well proportioned with manual adjusted letter spacing!
What a looks, amazing design.
Nice video.
Hot take: Of course a lot of watch collectors are distrustful/spiteful towards fashion brands. Have you seen how most of us dress?
Chanel getting more serious about mechanical watches is cool but since they don't even seem to advertise their 38 mm watches on their own website, just their 33 mms based on a quick browse, I think they'll struggle to gain traction in the male dominated watch RUclips space. In general, I find it a bit weird that the fashion brands that seem to be really working on breaking into the mechanical watch market (e.g. Hermes, LV, Chanel) are trying to enter the men's wristwatch space without first making anything else a man would want to wear. Meanwhile the brands that do the latter (e.g. Gucci, Armani) are fully living up to the fashion watch stereotype.
Not at all did i have Chanel on the radar.
The J12 in White looks so much like a Rado Watch, but better. :)
8:19 - The bracelet looks beefy in profile👌
I really enjoyed this video! ❤
Maybe hermes and bulgari (non-octo finissimo) next?
Question: What percentage of your viewers are female? I like watches and whisky and on the whisky side I'm one of 1-4% of female viewers 😭.
In 2013, I was one of 4% female hodinkee readers i think (I stopped reading their articles a couple years back though). I hope there are more women into watches now 🤞
the gucci watch with the moving buzzy bees is insane
Hi Britt hope you are good and family what would you go for a tag or rado
Finally a Chanel J12 review!
The Montblanc/Minerva merger has led to some insane timepieces with movement and dial treatments that put Lange and Patek to shame. Put a 16.29 movement under a loupe and tell me otherwise.
That deal also makes me pretty mad though - they should've just made a separate brand for Minerva. Now you have Mont Blanc simultaneously competing at Tissot, Longines and Lange price points.
if im not mistaken older Dior watches have IWC movements…
I know they used ETA and Zenith movements! But IWC movements sounds right too!
If only Invicta would start investing in their quality control and in original designs but steering away from 60+ mm watches, they could be taken seriously and even earn back the honor in their heritage.
My budding watch collection and interest is 100% driven by aesthetics. The craftmanship put into something like dial making is a completely valid reason to get into watch collecting. (Though I’ll probably never afford my holy grail, a Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux). Hermes’ leather marquetry dials are literal works of art requiring incredible precision. Gucci has their own watchmaking atelier in Switzerland and makes their own movements. Versace watches are under the Timex group. Many watch channels would recommend Timex as an entry budget watch but scoff at a Versace watch? Why so pressed? Most people can’t afford a luxury watch, so why not get an attainable fashion watch made by Timex or - gasp - Fossil? Not all of us get a kick out of winding the crown everyday, either. And actually appreciate that technology has produced accurate daily timekeeping. Mostly, I wish people would just love what they love without having to hate on what other people love. Life is short. Hate less.
I think you Forget J12 3125 wich has a Audemars Piguet mouvement inside 😋
Unique looking watches.
Nice style!
I appreciate high fashion brands getting into serious horology, however their MSRP prices shoot for the likes of the holy trinity, and if I want to spend 20k+ on a watch I for sure will prefer the likes of AP/VC/Patek over say a Chanel or Louis Vuitton
How reliable are Kinessi movements? I come across so many threads online about people needing to send back their Tudor, because it runs -40 seconds per day after only a year or so of daily wear. I’ve tried to find an example of this happening with eta/sellita, and failed to come up with one. But there are many examples of this happening with Tudor. And also with the new Rolex movements. This scares me a bit. Are these things really even serviceable? How do you even regulate a free sprung balance? Especially with Kinessi’s tiny balance wheel. Doesn’t even look like there’s room for a Micro Stella tool to fit.
My buddy bought a Tudor 2 months ago and the movement just ceased up on him.
@mkii2363 Outhouse movement 😂😂 that’s funny lol. I do currently have a Tudor bb58, and it runs great as well. I last set it 2 weeks ago, and it’s currently +1 second. I am worried about the future though. I don’t know how long the good accuracy will last. Or if it will be serviceable down the line. I don’t want them to slap in a brand new movement when the time comes. I would not be a happy camper 😂😂 wish I would have done the research before purchasing.
If I could do it over, I would have saved up to get a used Sub date from like 2019 with the 3135 movement, and call it a day.
From what I read, some of the Rolex 32xx movements also experience accuracy issues after a year or 2 of daily wear. There’s a thread online from a watchmaker who worked for Rolex. He explains in detail what the issue is. According to him, it has to do with the increased power reserve. They need to make the mainspring a lot thinner. By making the mainspring thinner, this lowers the amount of torque delivered to the escapement. Lower torque makes the amplitude go low over time, which negatively impacts time keeping.
That’s the basic story, and it happens with both Rolex (32xx series) and Tudor (MTxx series). Same sort of design elements shared between the 2 brands.
I personally don’t have endless amounts of cash laying around. If my Tudor breaks, it would be crushing 😂😂 can’t go out and buy another one. For someone in my position, I think it best to stick with used Rolex 31xx series movement, or basic eta/sellita. I have other watches to fall back on, but I really love the aesthetics of my Tudor. Wish they could have fit an eta or something in it. Want something I know I can depend on.
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 I know, this is exactly what I mean.
@mkii2363 Just typed up a response, but RUclips censored it. Idk what the deal is 🤷🏻♂️ 😂😂
Usually my comments get censored over political discussions. But why does a watch discussion need censored?? Lord 🙄😂
My friend Laird Hamilton, the BIG WAVE surfer used to be a brand ambassador back in the day.
I won't buy watches from fashion brands like Hermes and Chanel because i don't want to associate myself with those pretentious high luxury brands. I am, however, very open to watches from watch/jewelry brands like Chopard and Piaget because as you said, historically watches and jewelry were very much intertwined.
Great original content❤️
Amazing watch design 🥰🥰🤩
I wholeheartedly agree!
p.s. why no singing at the end?
really enjoy this video....
Great Great Post. Really loved the content, the research, and the point. Wonder if my spouse would want something whimsical......
The problem with brands like Chanel and other luxury fashion brands is their elitism. Have you ever walked into Chanel store at an airport? The second you walk in the door you are leapt on by a vapid sales assistant, that treats you like sh*t if you dare say “you’re just having a look”. Chanel don’t want you even looking unless you’re paying….so no, I’m not here for them at all. Chanel are the personification of snobbery and elitism.
Not my experience at all with Chanel. They were extremely sweet and hospitable. Even the time I walked in and didn’t buy anything.
Your videos are amazing!
Beautiful watch
Nice video
Very amazing watch
I have had an eye on chanel for some time now. The j12.1 is a better finished movement than Tudor 5600. Ceramic 200m and in reality a dive watch .What not to like ?.
Informative with some great points.
I love watching your videos
Super interesting, great info!
Ooh Britsy looking great in dress!
Wonderful watches
I believe Hermes is also heading towards that same direction.
Wonderful vedio❤
Totally agree that luxury watches are jewellery cosplaying as tools. Which I am totally fine with. Written while wearing my 500m diving watch 😎
I've been hunting for a Monsieur in beige gold. I'm guessing this didn't help 😅
Gucchi's watches are so good
Unique design!
I don't like so much expensive watches from luxury clothing brands, such as, Chanel, or Hermes, or Louis Vuitton. If I want to buy a fashion watch I would choose a cheap watch, but nothing expensive. Otherwise I prefer a recognized watch brand, not only a luxury brand who want to sell its name with watches.
