- Angling for steelhead with a two handed spey rod isn't the most effective form of fishing. Yet I rather enjoy the meditative state of casting and breathing while occasionally being jolted by voracious tugs of a swung fly. The mental speed of daily life quickly fade to the focused parts of a well crafted spey cast. It becomes my own mental sanctuary.
The fall trip to northern CA revisiting old stomping grounds that I used to walk and wade hours have changed through numerous fires, restoration since I last visited. Truly a different experience to explore each bend like a young kid going on an adventure in search for epic swing water. The first series of rain bumps after a chronic stretch of heat led to some fish.

Please hit like and subscribe if you enjoyed the content! I’m fairly new to the production aspect of things but come from a background in outdoor/wildlife photography. Would appreciate any ideas and tips if you have any!
Very cool! Listening to the takes through the sounds that a click/pawl reel makes is awesome!
Dude!…… I go days without a tug and you catch one every cast…..what am I doing wrong?!?!
Gorgeous. Nice footage and b-roll too. Those fish were really pulling. I normally fish the Rogue but will be hitting up some No Cal rivers next month. You mind mentioning which river (s) that was. Didn’t seem like any of the majors
This is one of the major watersheds in CA
Very nice, well done. Lovely looking water, music not intrusive. Good fishing handling.
Thank you very much!
I was fortunate to hook and land the 30lb steelhead in my avatar photo on my very first outing with a spey rod, swinging an unweighted fly. Nice video. Looks like fun.
That's so cool! Where did you catch it at? BC? OP?
That fish came off of the Kispiox. Largest OP fish was a 27lb fish off of the Quinault. @@FatHalibutz32
pieroway renegade? what weight do you use? I am thinking of getting one or maybe the Echo Compact Spey.
I rock the 7110 and 8116. Echo is also a fantastic choice but a bit longer at 12 ft. Something to consider based on the water you’re planning to fish. Good luck!
The rod is ugly af, but that reel sure is a beauty!
Nice fish
Nice video - new to spey myself - Some questions.
Do majority of your hookups happen on the swing, the dangle - how long do you leave the fly at the dangle.
How do you target fish on new water ......
How do you target depth ?
thanks !!!
generally look for walking pace water when exploring. The hang down time can vary with the current below you - would generally wait a few seconds after the line straightens but there are no rules. Good luck to you!
