Me and my partner are gonna be moving over from NZ. Took awhile to figure which state/city we wanna move to but then chose Philadelphia. We originally were gonna go for NYC but the insane price to live there veered us to Jersey City but I then decided to find the nearest cheapest city from Jersey and found Philly. Done research and absolutely AMAZED in a great way. This video didn't put me off in the slightest as where we live has insane traffic and is a touristy place. Just makes us more excited to move! Grew up in Lancaster and Pittsburgh in 1970's. Mistakenly moved to both York and Chester Counties when retiring after years in DMV. PA has suffered decades of truly piss poor leadership that has only very recently been voted out of office. It will take decades for PA to re-join the thriving Northeast metropolis corridor because of idiotic voting blocks. Even affluent Chester Cty is behind, with ingrained, money wasting attitudes to match. Advice to PA's young: move away to DMV for a better quality of life in almost every way.

But eventually snow shovel came and saw a bit of rain. Even in those conditions I really appreciated Philly for what it is. I stayed in chinatown for the most part. And most of the time i relied on Septa even on my way back to the airport. It was like wow its like new york. What blew my mind is its 2 hrs fron new york in an amtrak. All the cities i want to go washingtob , nyc, boston is possible without driving or riding a plane and I find great value at that. The mere fact that I can survive here without car was mindblowing. Food in chinatown? Omg! Philly cheestake OmG! I cant find this in dfw. The rent is comparable to dfw. So it is making me really consider. I live in an area that isn’t LGBTQ friendly, (East Tennessee), and I’m desperate to find an area that is accepting-primarily for my son, 29. He deserves happiness, not fear. Plus, I’m a writer and ghost hunter, and he’s trying to break into the movie industry. We need a central area where the two of us can find our niche. (Commuting isn’t an issue.) We don’t necessarily have to live within city limits, since we love Pennsylvania, period. But being close to the city would be nice. I’m older, 58, and live with a disability, so it isn’t easy for me to get around. I need to know that I can use my mobility scooter without an issue. (I hate that I have to use it, but for longer distances, that’s my life. I can walk short distances, but not long-thanks to being dragged by a horse when I was in my teens.) And darn it! I would LOVE, more than anything, to find a neighborhood where I might be able to make friends, have CRAZY themed parties (because I’m great at those), and maybe see trick-or-treaters for the first time in over 30 years. I’m DESPERATE for LIFE! For myself, and my son. East Tennessee isn’t exactly the friendliest place, especially if you live your life on the left. It’s beautiful, and I have a gorgeous view of the mountains, but that isn’t LIFE! And I need to finally live it… especially for my son. OH!!! And most importantly, I am DESPERATE for great healthcare! That’s non-existent where I live. I know I’m looking for a lot, but after living the life WE have, we deserve it. Especially my son. What do you think? Can I be happy here? (I’m saving your video, and subscribing, for the (hopefully) not-too-distant future. 😊

I'm sorry to hear that it isn't friendly for your son there. We sure do have plenty of great health care institutions here and walkability is through the roof! I think you should come for a visit. But be prepared because prices outside of the city limits is through the roof as well as most desirable areas in Philly. You will definitely have a higher cost of living compared to the south.

I feel for what you have to deal with in TN. I lived in Western Kentucky for 11 years and….yeah, people aren’t very accepting. I’m originally from Philly. I moved back in 2007.
I don’t know what kind of budget you are working with, some areas are more expensive than others….and I’m not well versed on wheelchair user accommodation. However, LGBTQ is no issue, and from what I can see, there seems to be great nightlife. I’m an older woman who’s white and straight, so..my knowledge is limited.
There’s hospitals that are well known and can offer excellent care…then again, depending on insurance coverage, sometimes it’s hard to access care.
If you are a Reddit user, there’s a few subreddits devoted to Philly. People there are really helpful.
I had to comment because I felt just like you did when I was living in Hopkinsville, KY (I was in the service, and stayed in the area when I got out). In any event, I wish you and your son luck.
