A stellar trade made this abandoned Yamaha 660 ATV mine. Best barn find I've had in a while! Will it run again? I know nothing about 4 wheelerss, how quad's work, how to fix ATV's, but I need a 4x4 ATV for farm chores, so it's worth a shot. I'm a beginner mechanic, a total rookie, in fact, it took me a few weeks just to figure out how to get it out of gear to push it into the garage. Let's give this a go and see if we can restore this abandoned quad and get it to run!

About the two mechanics, I'm beyond sure given enough time and reason to spend on the machine, both of them easily could have fixed it. The reason the original owner didn't want to fuss with it was because there was a serious problem with the carburetor and he isn't into using aftermarket parts, so a yamaha carb would have put the replacement cost much, much higher, and since he already has several other working vehicles, there was no point for him to invest, but all the better for me! Jason only gave up because he was here for a short visit and didn't have time to keep going on it. But in the end, I'm happy I was given the opportunity to figure it out myself, because that makes me all the more proud of my accomplishment.
Love the video. My son is an auto mechanic. Last summer he started to work on ATV's - they are a different kind of beast but he is enjoying it. In fairness to Caleb, there are so few cars with carbs left that most mechanics do not see them. My son studied auto mechanics in college and they just glossed over that part.
You did really well - the stages of diagnosis - follow the path, start with the less expensive fixes...

Prior to my retirement, I was a manufacturing engineer who was often called upon to participate in screening and interviewing prospective employees. My highest priority was to try to determine the applicant’s attitude. I found 100% of the time that an individual who had a desire to learn, would. Also, I found that mechanical inclination is not gender specific. You, Anne, just put a huge smile on an old man’s face; I would have hired you on the spot.
This also put a huge smile on my face! Fuel & spark are the two basic things needed to run an engine. I have always maintained that teens should have to maintain a 20 year old car for several years before they are allowed to own a new one.
Yeah, decades as an engineering manager, and I agree fully. Persistence and curiosity make the day.

That right there means more to me than you could ever know. I spent a lot of my young life feeling stupid, not understanding *why* some things were so hard for me to understand that everyone around me seemed to just get, right off the bat. I still have to do some tough workarounds, but learning to work with my hands rather than sitting at a computer has made me feel so much more capable and willing to tackle so much more than I ever thought I could. Each skill builds off the last, and I’m learning to love my failures a little more. I would have loved to work with and learn from you.
@@AnneofAllTrades , you far from stupid. In fact, intelligence is required to recognize that none of us knows everything, and that’s what stirs curiosity. The more an intelligent person knows, the more they realize that they don’t know.
I realize this video is a year old, but I just wanted to say your excitement when it started running put a smile on my face. Solving problems and figuring out how to fix or build things really is a joy. I worry a lot of people miss out on that. Also I really think that especially for kids solving problems can really build confidence and slowly opens a persons eyes to the possibilities in their own life. My mom is a science teacher and she always tries to create problem solving opportunities for kids in a way that really gets them engaged. She's said some kids really go through a transformation as they go through her class doing that. Love the videos! Keep learning!
This is my favorite video for the same reason. There are few times I've experienced this much joy and satisfaction in a silly project.

I watched it twice because I never understood what the problem was. I’m guessing it was a clogged fuel filter but I don’t believe you ever said that exactly you just showed a new one and said you drop the old one and spent a lot of time talking about square space.
@@capn1600 it was that it needed a new carburetor, a new solenoid, new fuel lines, new filter, and a whole lot of tinkering and adjustments that happened over 3 months. Talking about squarespace for 30 seconds in a 12 minute video is what made it possible for you to watch the video for free, twice ;)
as a life long mechanic i was at first wanting to laugh at you when you said that now you needed to find the thing that looked like this. but i stop and realized that not everyone is like me and then i got inspired by your persistence. well done i am proud of you and i know you will get great enjoyment from your hard work.

Kinda how I felt about my Mitsubishi Raider. I am not a mechanic, I am a 54 yr old female. I had it at a Mitsubishi dealership, no one knew what was wrong. RUclips was a lifesaver and one guy from a parts store , a new control module, a new knock sensor, and by myself I changed the coil packs. I feel like a mechanic... lol 😂 GREAT JOB ANNE.

We have learned the same way that the fuel filter is always the first place to start on small devices around our hobby farm. And I laughed when you smelled that it wasn’t diesel. I made that mistake once and promptly bought a yellow fuel can for diesel and 2 stroke fuel containers get a zip tie on the handle to differentiate from plain gasoline. I watched this video with my 4 yo daughter and she cheered for you when you got it working!

I got a little teary eyed watching this as I know how frustrating it is to be female and feel like you missed all the 'male lessons' on how to fix things. I bought acres a few years ago and I have been learning how to fix sooooo many things. Now I can tune up my riding mower and tractor by myself. I diagnosed the issue, ordered the part, and replaced a spindle on my riding mower a few months ago by myself. I diagnosed the issue, purchased the parts, and replaced my sump pump a few weeks ago. Sometimes I feel unstoppable. Whoop whoop. Girl power!!
Those fix it yourself moments are the best! I definitely wish I’d had a few more male lessons as you called them growing up, but I’m glad to have the opportunity to learn now :)
My wife and I did an ATV tour recently and now that is all I want for Christmas 👍

Well done. I cannot stress how many times I have had my “eureka” moments doing something completely different. Having a leaf blower give you the inspiration to fix the “carburetor” is a wonderful example. Good on you.
Thank you! Can you think of any of your eureka moments offhand? I always love hearing about those.
My most memorable was a 4 hour debate I had with a co-worker on how to implement symmetry in an optimization algorithm (yes, software). We had our breakthrough and realized this obeyed Newton’s 2nd law of motion. We then spent the next 10 min debating what solution would take the fewest CPU cycles. This reduced a 23-hour calculation down to 20 min.
Similarly, my training is in quantum chemistry. The Air Force assigned me to work Satellites. I succeeded because I simply thought of satellite orbits as electrons and was amazed at how well it worked and allowed me to “visualize” what was happening.

@@AnneofAllTrades I am an amateur tinkerer and I do as you do. Look it over and work on something in my mind first. I figure order of operation for woodworking. How the firearm works first before I take it apart. What a small engine needs to run and work it out by reasoning. I am wanting to try my hand with older wind watches, service and repair. So many cool things out there to learn.

I quit high school and am now a doctor. In between I was MANY things and honestly that exact approach will help you fix a carburetor, washing machine or an appendix!!
@@DoctorPrepperMD absolutely agree! I've always been discouraged from pursuing my many interests, but reading a book called Range recently gave me a wonderful perspective and the desire to be a lot more stubborn when people tell me I should "focus" more ;)

Nice to see it working and not dumped in the trash. I can see you have this figured out now, but there are only ever 4 things any petrol or diesel engine needs; Fuel, Air, Compression and Spark. If the combustion engine isn't running, you just need to work out which of the four it's missing. I'm always happy to see a novice home mechanic get an engine running when professional mechanics can't (be bothered to?) get it working.

As the saying goes "Never Give Up, Never Surrender!" You should be extremely proud, you have done an awesome thing by saving another machine. That machine will likely serve you very well especially because you cared enough to save it. This video is exactly why I make videos on how to repair things like gas equipment like trimmers, chainsaws the like. I get great satisfaction when I hear back that someone was able to save their own machine from the trash. Your video will help inspire others to realize that they too can fix their stuff. Great Job!

The key to fixing anything is to understand how it works then you can figure out why is is not working, as that wonderful brain of your just demonstrated.

I could not help but smile, as you discovered how your ATV worked mechanically. My first experience with a small engine was at 14, and it did not go well. I failed to put oil in a B&S engine at the hardware store I had just started working at, and let’s say, the engine did not run long. The store owner thought it would be a good learning experience for me to repair the engine and it started me on a life long journey to learn how things work. At 61, I realize, I only know a fraction of everything I still want to learn. I applaud your never give up, nothing is beyond my understanding approach to life. It's things like this that make me think I can work on my own car. It's just a machine, right? Machines have parts that do things. If you understand what those things are and how the parts do them, then you should be able to fix them. Easy peasy! 😁 Congrats on getting it running again, and thanks for sharing!

This is the best video about motorboats I've ever seen. You did great for your first carb clean job (15 year master motorcycle tech speaking) also never trust what a mechanic says about his own vehicles. Especially a non essential one.

My old truck (1972 Ford F100) is in the shop now and when they were talking about the carburetor I had no idea what it did. Now I know which is a good feeling. I'm sure you'll get tons of use out of the ATV and nice that you gave it a new life!

Well done! You've nailed it. To work, every car / combustion engine needs fuel, air and a spark as a minimum to work. So what you did is just right:see if these 'ingredients' were there and fixed this to achieve them. It doesn't always fix [every] problem but it is THE set of essentials... Enjoy the ride!
Can't see the forest for the trees. I worked at a dealership & was talking to a mechanic & he was trying to fix the headlights on an Audi. I asked if he checked the fuse. No? He'd just spent 2 hours replacing the lights & testing the wiring harness. It was the fuse. Dare I say, girls look at things differently. Great job Anne, really! I'm a tom boy too 😅

You should take the old carburetor apart so you can see how it works and what was wrong with it if anything. There's really nothing to them as u will see. Cheers from Canada
Caleb already tried to rebuild it and said something inside was warped. I suppose I can take it apart but then again I’m not sure what it’s supposed to look like haha

Anne you should have cut the old fuel filter open to see how plugged up it was, i know alot of mechanics that miss this step when diagnosing a no start problem. Good job and keep on learning.👍🍻
