  • Chris Baker pilots tugboats for Staten Island-based McAllister Towing, one of New York City's two towing companies. Our film crew joined Captain Baker as vessels from the United States and Canadian Navies called to port for Fleet Week 2009. Captain Baker's tug, the Rosemary Ellis, escorts ships and helped dock the U.S.S. Iwo Jima, an 844-ft Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, and the U.S.S. Roosevelt, a 500-ft Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

    There is something about the captains seat on a tug boat I love. The view all around and controls at your fingertips, the horsepower, it's like a fighter cockpit on water

    I was stationed on a US Navy Tug YTB-820, Guantanamo Bay, 92-93. leading seaman the last 8 months or so.
    Very busy back then.
    Awesome job, I loved it. Thought of a career as a civilian, but then I met the Mrs. Nice video Captain.

    I got my Merchant Mariner Credential and TWIC Card so now I'm ready to start working on Tugs! I'm going to try Moran Towing Corporation in Savannah, Georgia or Jacksonville, Florida with my alternative being McAllister Towing in Jacksonville, Florida and Crescent Towing in Savannah, Georgia. Awesome video!

      Great seeing the United States Navy Wasp Class Landing Helicopter Dock Amphibious Assault Ship USS. Iwo Jima LHD-7 from Naval Station Mayport, Florida being docked in New York City, New York for Fleet Week! That's usually done by McAllister or Moran Tugs.

    BOATS IS A HARD LIFE. MY MOTHER HATED HIS JOB AND TRIED ALL HER LIFE TO GET HIM TO SWITCH CAREERS BUT DAD WOULD NOT HAVE IT. AS A RESULT I KNEW MY FATHER ONLY HALF THE TIME.

    I was a snipe, stationed on a U.S. Army Large Tug in Thailand during the Vietnam era. I've always liked tugs, and have sailed for many years. After the service, I got my merchant ticket, but 'Nam had slowed way down and shipping was at a standstill, so went into other things, but living near the port of Los Angeles/Long Beach, I see a lot of tugs in action.

    Tug boats are always U.S. flag - local waters - best career for a young person since that is very well protected under the Jones Act. McAllister, Moran etc. are Jones Act vessels. Kings Point is the Maritime Academy like say Annapolis for the Navy. There are also excellent State Maritime Academies too. I used to represent Kings Point it started during WWII for Liberty Ships and the need for officers for cargo ships. 6000 were killed by enemy submarines sometimes right off NYC during WWII - nobody mentions them of course. Sorry for the history lesson....

    • @skipsassy1

    I miss the Navy's YTB tugs, Nothing against the privately owned Tugs. But I am hesitant on civilian Tugs docking Navy ships. there is too much of a security risk in my opinion. the Navy use to operate it's own Tug fleet because of this possible threat. and I believe they should return to that practice. Let civilian Tugs service civilian ships. but let the Navy dock their own ships.

    Nobody ever mentions the Jones Act and the U.S. flag issues that protect your career actually?

    • @skipsassy1
      @skipsassy1 7 лет назад

      The "Jones Act" is a law that requires U.S. citizens jobs on all ships that are inside our waters: coastal cruises such as all rivers: Mississippi Rivers etc. This includes freighters, barges etc. All ships must be built at U.S. shipyards in short. Cruise ships are in the "blue water trades" they make sure to hire only the cheapest labor they can find - and you can be sure all ships are built in foreign shipyards (again labor costs) and all the passengers are usually Americans. These are "Foreign Flag ships" They rule the cruise industry. No U.S. flag ships are in this trade. I'm giving you the simple story ok. Retired maritime lawyer age 60.
