THE STORY OF JOHN LENNON'S GAY LOVE AFFAIR with Brian Epstein

  • Did John Lennon have a gay love affair with Brian Epstein? Yes and no. It was almost a love fair, but no quite... it was never "consumated." |
    In April of 1963, while Paul, George, and Ringo were chilling in the Canary Islands, John, instead of being with Cynthia, who had just had their baby Julian, jetted off with Brian to Barcelona, Spain, where night after night, according to Peter Brown, they would sit at sidewalk cafés, playing a peculiar game. 🗣️ "John would point out some passing man to Brian, and Brian would explain to him what it was about the fellow that he found attractive or not."
    This begs the question of what really went down in Spain. Since John and Brian are gone, we'll likely never fully know, but the people around them have talked about it. John's childhood friend Pete Shotton claims in his book John Lennon: In My Life that John admitted to letting Brian, um, "do his thing," if you will.

    The biggest thing to take away from this was the idea that John's violent outburst was some weird, out of character thing. Maybe to that extent, but it's well documented that he could be very violent. He openly admitted that if he wasn't a Beatle he'd probably be in prison.

    • @ponzo1967
      @ponzo1967 2 месяца назад

      True in his younger years, but John was all about growth and shed that part of himself as he matured. I wouldn't debate he was a choir boy at any stage but he did realize he was chauvinistic and semi violent then changed himself accordingly so kudos to him for that.

    I’ll say this, if Pete was such a dear loyal friend, he would have never written about a so-called gay encounter between John and Brian in the first place. Pete stated that he would have been loyal to John even if a murder had been committed. Where is Pete’s loyalty regarding this supposed situation? Talk is cheap, unless your getting paid for writing a book. John is deceased and unable to defend himself. Whatever John’s explanation was when he was alive, I say, “Let it Be!” It’s easy to cash in on someone who is dead.

    • @alanh7247
      @alanh7247 4 месяца назад +2

      I see no betrayal. given the totality of lennon's life, this supposed encounter is a very trivial matter. maybe pete just wanted to provide an honest authentic portrait of his friend. I don't see what the big deal is.

    • @thescienceofhome
      @thescienceofhome 4 месяца назад +5

      @@alanh7247 Whether it’s a big deal or not is not the issue. I am always curious about those who write books about the deceased that include so-called “revelations” or “facts” that cannot be proven. We all know that the dead cannot speak or defend themselves. It sounds, to me, like Mr. Pete was interested in making a profit off of his “friendship” with John. If you are truly a trusted friend and confidant, why tell, why write a book? and…If you write a book, why include a possible salacious detail that cannot be contested because both parties to your tale are dead. To me, true friends do not capitalize off of another friend’s death, but opportunists do.
      Now, Paul, on the other hand, was close enough to John to know if something occurred between John and Brian or if such a tendency existed in John. However, Paul played it cool and disclosed nothing. That’s what real “friends” do.

    • @alanh7247

      @@thescienceofhome so... you think he's lying in order to make money... either he's lying or he's not... if he's lying, the story has no impact on lennon or his legacy... if he's not lying, the story has no impact on lennon or his legacy... in short, it simply doesn't matter.

    • @thescienceofhome
      @thescienceofhome 4 месяца назад

      Comprehension and context go a long way. Did I say that I think Pete is lying? My words indicate “skepticism” regarding Pete’s written account of John and Brian’s so-called sexual encounter. That same skepticism is also exercised in regard to Pete’s possible motive for writing a book about John Lennon (his dear friend) only after John’s death.
      My point (please read my original post) details my curiosity about people (friends, etc.) who write books after the subject of their book is dead. (In this case, Pete, who is self-described as a very close friend of John Lennon.) In my opinion, as stated afore hand, true friends do not seek to capitalize (money and profits received) off of the death of another friend by writing a book that contains information (salacious in form) than cannot be confirmed or contested. My point is as simple as that.
      Now, your repeated point about Pete’s statements not having an impact on John’s legacy (in response to my posts) has absolutely nothing to do with the point I was making and made. Your point is irrelevant to my point. My post did not address nor did it discuss an effect on legacy.
      However, I will address this, your comment about Pete’s possible lying not having an impact on John’s legacy. Always know this, lying (the act of producing lies) is always impactful, perhaps in varying degrees, but it is always impactful. It robs us of the truth. Lying also changes perception and history. Lying, regardless of its impact - great or small, should always matter and should always be a matter of concern to us all.

Brighten cannot talk openly about being gay, and John was one of his closest friends. The circumstances may be ripe for the rumor mill, but I don't think it's up to anybody to speculate, not even Paul.

But when Paul McCartney was asked if John Lennon & Brian Epstein had any kind of sexual encounter his response was clear that he believed he hadn’t. Paul McCartney said he had seen John so many times totally wasted and never saw him once show any interest in men as he did with women. They were together so much of the time Paul said that if it were true he would have seen something at least once. This is the gist of what he said I don’t know the exact quotes. I’m not sure, but I believe it was said on the Howard Stern show.

    Begs the question how very many “experiences” John had by the age of 22, with men who ‘did not identify’ as homosexual?
    I hate to break into those invested in scrubbing the transgressive sex & drugs off the Beatles, the only thing more rock & roll than bisexuality is heteroflexibility. And there was Stuart Sutcliffe. And the sex workers Goldman investigated, and John's widow screaming about his bisexuality, as she has frequently & consistently for the past 50 years. But mostly it was John himself, constantly hanging out his slip saying things that no one but a bisexual man would ever even think up.
    It's sad that John was also homophobic and violent, but he was just a man, and he could use some compassion just like the rest of us.
    But world views are going to have to expand to include the reality of people like John Lennon who are not homonormative nor heteronormative. Would be nice if we could pull our collective heads out of our ass and demand truth out of the coming bio pics (yes Paul, even about you, historical truth matters) rather than let them shovel bullshit.
