      "The layback was killer for 1994." I'm very curious what you mean by that. Have ice skaters gotten BETTER at ice skating in recent years? If so, why? What would cause skaters to be more talented today than 30 years ago? Is it bc the quality of ice skates have improved...? Or, have human beings improved? Why should an athlete have better skills than athletes a couple decades ago? What would explain that? Thanks very much. I'm very curious about this. (And yes, I do notice that today's ice skaters seem WAY more skillful, stronger, faster, more artistic and more impressive today than in the past but I don't know why that is.)

      @@silverbushb448 Spins in general were weaker then and what would be a mediocre layback today was stellar back then. Look over all the skaters and you will seen what one means. Kostner would have had a good layback back then, lol!

      She was Tonya the Jumper for about six months. For the rest of her career she was Tonya the Popper, Tonya the Stepout, Tonya the Faller. She had to be good at something. Spins today are more centered but tons of bizarre and truly ugly positions. But regular laybacks and sit spins were better in the 90s.

    I am not a Tonya apologist. I think what she did to Ms. Kerrigan was awful. BUT. She accomplished so much & had she had a solid parental guidance, probably nothing like this would have ever happened. This girl came from a disadvantaged background, poor parentage AND asthma. Even so, she is one of the greatest ladies' skaters ever. I so wish she had a loving family like Nancy did. Ms. Kerrigan didn't come from a wealthy background either, but her whole family was there for her. I don't blame Nancy for her attitude towards Tonya - she's only human - but I still ache for Tonya's potential.

      Cards2011 There are plenty of people who have disadvantaged lives and grow up in less than supportive households that aren't like tonya. I don't have any sympathy for her because ultimately you can have a bad past but you ultimately are responsible for the decisions you make in life and the consequences that come from your decision and actions are ultimately on you. Tonya is very good at playing the poor me role so she doesn't have to own up to her own mistakes by pointing fingers at everyone around her instead of manning up and admitting she messed up.

      She shouldn't be judged based on one failure. This is a tough sport and you will not become that good for not working very hard. I know I used to do it for a while. A lot of hard training goes into it and it's not fun by any means. It looks far more glamorous during competitions but it is not on most days. There's a lot of physical fitness needed to do the jumps etc. and this is done off ice. She's been brilliant in 1991, and has shown she is a very talented skater.. She has not recovered after the scandal, but she shouldn't be judged on one wrong for the rest of her life. She was emotionally fragile and didn't have the support others had and battled against a lot of adversity. She should be comanded for this.

    The winner was actually Oksana Baiul and her Black/White swan performances were very impressive, and she also had a difficult start in life. BTW, Nancy Kerrigan WAS innocent - conspiring to hurt her not only was criminal, it also hurt the sport!

    Tonya was an amazingly strong jumper and IIRC, at that time only Surya Bonaly could give Tonya any competition on strength jumps. Artistically, she wasn't as graceful as others, which probably kept her from winning gold many times.

    • @russianskatingfan
      @russianskatingfan 8 лет назад +5

      What kept her from winning was more in the big competition she didnt do those jumps. Yes she had them when in shape and in top form, but they rarely were done when it really mattered. Pretty much the only time they ever were was her dream 91 in winning U.S Nationals, being 2nd at worlds, and winning Skate America. As you can see in this skate she didnt jump that well, stepping out of her triple combo (.4 deduction) and even putting her foot down on a simple double flip which hardly any girls had problems with (.2 deduction). She is also out of shape, which is probably why she isnt jumping to her full potential, which was often the case in important events.

    What on earth is wrong with people that they cannot enjoy Tonya Harding’s skating without ripping Nancy Kerrigan to shreds? The world was filled with excellent national champions, and just because Tonya Harding skated at the Olympics did not mean she was ever a medal contender on this world stage. I enjoyed this program watching it now and I wish she had done it as well as at Skate America, when the crowd adored her and rocketed her to a win in the technical program. But you can see in people’s eyes at the start of an Olympic program what the outcome is going to be, and she was rattled. I wish her idiot friends had not done what they did, and I wish she had an upbeat piece of music like this for her free program, instead of Jurassic Park which was slow and which she never seemed happy or comfortable with. So many things could have been better for her.

    What? I thought Scott was pretty kind to her and seemed genuinely distressed for her when it looked like she wasn't going to complete the free skate. I don't think his comments had anything to do with her weight - they were aimed at the fact that she hadn't been practicing well and hadn't made it through any full programs in the days prior - plus her asthma. Scott had also said at times how tiny she was. I love watching her skate & was always glad that, in my mind, they didn't trash her.

    Unfortunately she should've placed much higher. The reason she didn't is because they weren't judging her skating and athletic ability alone. Had they done their job and left personal feelings out of it then she would've placed enough to at least have been on the podium. A panel of figure skating judges shouldn't be judging anything other than the athletes performance as a skater, matters off ice....that's for a judicial judge to decide. I hate that shit, not just in figure skating but every other sport as well. I'm not saying all of them are like that cause they're not, but the ones who are.....i no like.

    I feel like an ordinal placement of 10th is WAY too low. She had a step in-between her combo; however, now folks are putting a half loop in between 2 triples intentionally and that is okay. I would need to go back and watch the full run but I would at least think a 5th ordinal spot would have been at least more appropriate.

      @@kelsey1406 Good point. So what is worse?- a step in-between two clean jumps or a 2 foot? Oh wait - its more about perception and desirability. She lived her competitive life in this spotlight. When Tonya was ON, she was so, so, so on. Even when she was just hitting the big stage, she skated with exceptional maturity, speed and clean jumps. I would love to see interviews NOW of people who were at the head of U.S. Skating and see what the hell they were thinking then and how they feel about it now in hindsight.

  • @douglasbrown5671
    @douglasbrown5671 3 года назад

    One thing I noticed is she gained a lot of weight between Nationals and here, which is one reason this short program is nowhere near her Nationals one, and the jumps are nowhere as strong as her Nationals skate. I don't know what she was doing in the weeks in between exactly, but that was one story of her career. She wasn't consistently trained and prepared for big events to skate to her immense potential. The judges rarely did her a lot of favors, but she rarely did herself many either.

  • @baritonebynight

    Harding was, by far, the most talented skater in these games. In 1991, only Midori Ito could out skate her. However, she lacked work ethic, giving her a 4th place in 1992. Had she been in shape, she would have been on the podium...and possible taken gold. During these games, she cracked under the pressure. She was landing triple axels in practice...and landed then until 1996.....but did some of her worst public skating at these games. Kerrigan's skating was solid, but to me, uninspiring. Her attitude toward Oskana, who won gold, was telling. However, the best skate of the night, IMHO....wasn't anyone on the podium. It was Katarina Witt. Long past her technical prime and with a repertoire of jump dated even by 1988 standards, she told a story with her performance that nobody else could tell.
