  • This lesson looks at Russia and its former Republics today. It begins by examining the population, population density, and distribution of its people and the different ethnicities that make up the region.
It continues to examine how the pockets of ethnicities, particularly in Transcaucasia, have created frozen conflicts and even led to Russia invading Georgia in 2008.
The somewhat dubious democracies of most of the region's governments are explained as is the economic situation that the countries find themselves in and the dependence that some, such as Kazakhstan, have on the oil of the Caspian (whether it is a sea, lake, or "Special Legal Status".
Last the lesson looks at the religions of the region.
While this is produced to assist students in meeting the Texas Education Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for the World Geography studies course, it is useful for anyone who wishes to learn more about this part of the world.
