- 02/10/2024 East Dubuque, IL. Here a very long CN M338 is making it's way across the Mississippi River and through the old Illinois Central tunnel. The CN travels along the BNSF line for a short distance before heading to Galena. Shortly after the CN train I caught a BNSF train meet through town. This is the Aurora Sub which follows the Mississippi for a good distance.
That is so cool to see the CN coming across the bridge, going into and coming out of the tunnel, Red! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
That train seemed to go on forever! One of the longest I've ever seen, I believe. The 1789 and 1830 were hydrochloric and sulfuric acids respectively. Great catch Red!! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
I was 13yrs old in 1968 and by myself I rode a night train St. Paul,MN to Chicago. The train made a stop at East Dubuque, IL, it was more of a lighted platform. While stopped I saw Wig-Wag grade crossing signs with red light and a clanging bell. I didn't realize there was a tunnel until a gyro- light got my attention, and an Illinois Central train emerged. I was new to rail fanning and amazed at what I was seeing. My train departed after a few minutes and I had a huge grin. Thank you for the excellent video!
You're welcome C Leslie! That's a great memory you shared👍
Another great video Red. Keep them coming. "It's Drone Time" Lol.
Thanks Rob! Sure thing👍
Hello Red, a great long CN freight train going over the bridge and through the tunnel. Then the BNSF Intermodal train and the encounter with a BNSF tank car train and these trains were filmed fantastically with the drone. Excellent accompaniment of the train along the river. Thanks for this great video and best wishes to Iowa. wolfgang
Hey Wolfgang, you're welcome! Took almost a whole charge on the drone battery with that monster CN!
nice video bro❤❤😍😍
Thanks EW!
Excellent video Red! I really like seeing the trains running alongside the rivers. Thanks for sharing with us.!!! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
You're welcome Gary!
Great Red good spot for long trains
Thanks Ronald!
That was one heck of a long train. Another outstanding video Red!
Thanks Michael! That thing took forever to go by, almost ran out of battery on the drone.
I remember the Ammo tower at former DuPont Explosives plant just east of Seneca IL....two mile long train?! Excellent video. Former engineer, J.A.A.P., KNK, Elwood, IL... prior to duty with USAF (42251), 68-73. Thanks again!
You're welcome Neil! I didn't even know what a shot tower was until flying over it with my drone👍
Dubuque! My home town. When I was a kid it was all Milwaukee Road. I used to watch the trains from the Fengler street overpass. It was CB & Q across the river in East Dubuque.
Sounds like a lot of history there Jeff👍
Beautiful picture of the train 🚂🚂🚂 sounds good from Indiana love train 🚂🚂🚂❤️😍🖼️😊👍😘💕
Thanks Terry!
Swing Bridges are Awesome to See. One (1) of the Railroads uses a Swing Bridge up in St. Joseph, Michigan, which Borders Beautiful and Huge, Lake Michigan. 👍🙏
That swing bridge at Dubuque was built in 1868. 156 years old!
I've been here before but never seen drone footage. That tunnel has served many railroads: IC, CGW, BN, CCP, CNW, CN, BNSF
Another awesome video Red, man you stay safe out there and watch out for them birds. lol. But anyway, my friend will see you on the next one. I hope it’s a good one there by your camper.
Thanks Timmy! More camper trains coming soon👍
You can hear the stress on those cars as they exit the tunnel into the curve, wheel flanges ringing and the cars groaning. Great video Red!
Thanks Greg! That was a noisy spot for sure👍
Thanks for this fantastic video, Red! These aerial views make it look like a model railroad layout. 😊
You're welcome Armand!
Just came across your channel. Love the tunnel, the bridge and also Dubuque!! Awesome stuff!
Gotta say you crank out some awesome videos!👍
Thanks a lot Mark!
Awesome drone footage, fab very long train ! Beautiful scenery too. ❤😊
Thanks Carol! That's a beautiful spot, especially in the Spring👍
Nice catches there brother!
Thanks Brandon!
Last video here I didn't notice all the homes up on the bluff. What a view
Yep, that's quite a cliff!
Hello Red . Wow great tunnel and diamonds after that tunnel cool stop . That lead bullet tower I never new that’s how they were made 👍🏻 lnteresting. Thxs for that lnfo . Love the drone 👍🏻😎Robin out .
Hey Robin, you're welcome! I didn't know about the bullet tower until recently. I guess they used to be very common👍
Good shots all around Red, thanks. Nice shot of the old Star Brewery along with the Shot Tower and of course the swing bridge.
Thanks Fred! That shot tower is some great history👍
I love the way the train comes off the bridge, crosses the double-track main and then pokes into the tunnel. I think there is one other spot on the Mississippi where this happens (down in Missouri?)
Not sure about the Missouri location . The Dubuque bridge and tunnel are definitely unique!
Very cool, Red! To the right of the tunnel entrance, there appears to be a large foundation. Any idea what used to be there?
Thanks HeyBeerDan! I'm not sure about that structure. Sounds like a highway used to cross the river near the tunnel. Just looks like a bit of a guard rail left.
Very nice drone footage.
Thanks TIK!
Great drone shots!
Thanks Elizaveta!
Awesome train meet! How much room is there between the two trains when they're side by side like that, Red? 😊😊
Just enough Gary😀
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 Thanks Red!! ♥️
Stone Cold says that's a long SOB. Hell yeah!!
No doubt!
Awesome video, as always! You should go check out railfanning out at the Clinton IA area. Lots of switching to be seen at ADM and at the right spot out at Highway 30, you can pace a UP train at speeds of up to 70 miles an hour. It’s awesome!
Thanks Theodore! I've been to Clinton a couple times. Caught one over the swing bridge. Just West of Clinton is definitely a race track👍
Nice
Thanks Diego!
Ya I love Dubuque/ East there’s 3 RRs ur bound to catch something on one of them at some point
I had a feeling those BNSF guys were waitin somewhere close. Runnin right next to that river, they don't hafta worry about tyin up a bunch of at grade crossings.
Yep probably had to wait for that forever long CN.
Nice catches!
Man That 1st Manifest Was A Monster
Oh yeah!
It wasnt too long after my son-in-law got on with CN, maybe a few months, his train crossed the bridge, went through the tunnel, and ran the stop signal right after exiting the tunnel. It was at night, and nobody could figure how he didnt see that bright red light. He got a few days off for that incident, and hasnt done that since.
Yes Paul that signal seems to be in plain site. Strange it would be red since the train was probably blocking the BNSF.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 after seeing all your videos of the track setup, it seems to me that he may have run a signal on the Iowa side of the bridge, because a stopped CN train would really foul up the BNSF line, at the crossing (diamonds), and where CN has trackage rights on BNSF.
Once again you hit the mega CN train going across the bridge I'm positive they have every grade Crossing in Dubuque blocked when they have one this long. It looks so strange to see no ice on the river knowing what time of year it is. The howl off the train coming out of the tunnel makes you think they're on an industrial spur. If you look real hard on the west side above the tunnel you'll see the remnants of the Old Highway as there used to be a bridge there across the river. BNSF gave you a nice meet with the Intermodal and ethanol train but sadly our green AEX car didn't make the CN trek today. I made mention of your last video on the Jason Asselin channel as you caught a WB UP freight with 3 Center beams of LP Smart Siding. They are produced in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the E&LS ex MILW RD track @ Sagola MI. Only twice have.the loads been spotted both times.on NS headed SB near Cincinnati. Take care
@paulbergen9114 Thanks for all the info Paul! That train was so long I almost ran out of drone battery. I did notice something in the cliff above the BNSF line. It looked kind of like a guard rail or something. That rail must wear fast as noisy as it is out of that tunnel to the East. BNSF must have a low speed through that area. North of there they really get moving!
🚂😎👍
I wonder what it's like to live above the tunnel? 😮👍
I bet it's probably pretty quiet. That rock is dense.
Great video! I'd like to see this again after it green's up a bit. 😊👍
How many trains go in the tunnel
I'm guessing 3 or 4.
That was a big train that must have had 1100 axels
Do they loose contact with the dpu going thru tunnels?
Good question, I would have to look into that👍
How many crew members nowadays on a freight that long?
Only 2!
This video has some great drone footage of Canadian National train #M338 working its way across the Mississippi River bridge from Dubuque, Iowa into Eas Dubuque, Illinois. The train crosses the BNSF Auora Subdivision and then goes into the tunnel that allows the train to parallel the BNSF and eventually join the BNSF tracks to get to the Canadian National's former Illinois Central tracks to Galena, Illinois and eventually terminate at Markham Yard in Homewood, Illinois. Your drone footage of the eastbound BNSF train meeting the westbound BNSF train was a great catch.
Thanks Thomas! I literally just pulled into town and that CN train was crossing the bridge. Caught the train at the tunnel with seconds to spare👍
Weird bnsf usually have 5 engines
Two crew members is a lot for that many cars
It's absurd that that train was that long.
It did seem a bit ridiculous.
Here's the RUclips video of a similar tunnel at Hannibal, Missouri where the train crosses the Mississippi bridge, crosses a single-track main line and goes straight into a tunnel:

That was an interesting video. Had a lot of old GT cars. Looked like a possible auto parts train.
CN is a GARBAGE railroad. Should be fined millions of dollars for cutting at least 2 cities in half like that. I’d love to investigate them for violations of interstate commerce laws. GARBAGE railroad.
