Now, this is one of those songs where I always thought I knew what the meaning was, but the more I look into it... the more convoluted it seems. And any time I feel this way..... I feel like I'm missing something that I should be looking at, like in their earlier works such as "Jaws" or "The Way That You Were".
We can all collectively agree that this is his album of rumination and reminiscence....with that being said, I sort of agree with Dave's "epiphany": this could be an ode to "Eden" (which I think is actually the general representation of a "normal" relationship compared to what he has with Sleep. I don't think "Eden" is one person, but the amalgamation of people he's previously or currently attempting to have relationships with. The idea rather than a person). However, there still is something about this song that doesn't sit right with me, and I think the mv threw me off more than it should've... Vessel is definitely giving us all the answers in his videos, but we as viewers need to watch and interpret them carefully. He does love his symbolism!
Off the get-go, we can see this song's mv is HEAVILY influenced by Eastern culture, namely Japanese. The women in the video appear geisha-like in nature; the geisha symbolizes grace, beauty, and hidden strength; the FEMININE. The number of women here could be a nod to the number of times he's tried to start different relationships, but they always fail because of the ever-looming Sleep. The white ribbon symbolizes anti-violence, domestic abuse, and self-harm.... hmm. And tying them, time and time again, on branches covered in what appears to be red moss, which in itself is a symbol of strength and its ability to thrive in less-than-ideal conditions because it mirrors our own human resilience. In Eastern cultures, it's a beacon of new beginnings, a testament to life's perpetual cycle of rebirth. The katana he wields is a tangible representation of the values of honor, discipline, and loyalty that define the samurai code; the MASCULINE. Lastly, the blue light: spiritually, the blue aura indicates serenity, peace, contentment, and spiritual development.... could these all be a sign of him trying to grow as a person with every new relationship he has?

To a careful minimum - (Vessel has some interesting inner monologue here; he's talking to his "Eden" here, so close yet so far away... unrequited. Then he tells himself to keep his crazy talk - probably Sleep's possessions - hidden from his Edens)

And you'll find a different way
To keep from setting sail again, no - (This sounds like Vessel telling the Edens he knows that they're doing everything in their power from having any other kind of relation-SHIP *wink wink* besides the bare minimum from every setting sail again like they have in the past, no matter how many times he tries to anchor himself back into a relationship back with them.)
But I'm still full of the love you want
Still waking up beneath it all
And I'm still full of the love you want
I'll reach for you on faith alone - (Vessel pledging to the Edens that he has what it takes to maintain a decent relationship, he's still slowly trying his best to fight back his demons (Sleep). Even if it means he'll aim and shoot at it with nothing tangible, like his faith alone)
Seems your heart is locked up
And I still get the combination wrong
Or are you simply waiting to save your love
For someone I am not? - (Seems like his Edens know he's got something to hide, so they aren't opening up to him entirely. No matter how many times he's tried - and he's tried SEVERAL times - he still can't seem to unlock a true relationship from anyone because they simply don't see him as something long-term... he's too unstable and unreliable, no matter how resilient he is)
Too many swallowed keys
Will make you bleed internally someday, oh
Maybe, you believe that in the end
You will be better off that way? Oh - (Could this be the Edens retorting back to him? The reason why they won't open up to Vessel is because HE has so much he's hiding from them. The "key" to a healthy relationship is open communication, but he's swallowing all his deepest secrets, desires, keeping his "freakshow talk" to a careful minimum because he thinks it's better that way. But the Edens know that he's only harming himself in the end)

No matter what, forevermore - (Slightly different wording here, but same idea. He may be drowning deep below, but he's trying to wake up. No matter what, he'll forever be full of the love that the Edens require... Just needs some time)

Yeahhhh, that was a LOT. Probably the song that is the most confusing to me... but still somehow one of the most fun! It's the one I could imagine the most vividly simply because of how descriptive he is. Hell, maybe it's a song about all his failed attempts at recruiting members to Sleep's cult? Who knows anymore

Either way, this is probably at a 20 for me, not my fave, but not too bad either! Idk if any of my analysis made any sense, but this is what I have for now! 😁
Great breakdown. And yes, watching the video sort of detracts from lyrical discussion a bit - so it's nice to go back and just listen to the song before thinking it out.

I'm writing this part 30 seconds into watching and I'm gonna get ranking out the way.... 1/2, you'll find out in the next track why . This song manages to make me feel feels that I shouldn't feel lol. melodically it's BEAUTIFUL and the lyrics are so sad and poetic ugh I can't with this song 😭
Now that I've watched the whole vid, here's my take on the song/music video. I believe that this song is about vessels inability to move on, dispite his attempts. Through watching the music video, it makes me think that, since Vessel and Eden/Jessie ended, Vessel has tried over and over to meet new people and date and forget about the past... unfortunatly it seems like nothing but Eden/Jessie is on his mind when it comes to dating/starting a new relationship and sadly those new relationships don't end well, as forseen when Vessel uses the blade on himself and it seems like the cycle starts all over again. It could also be that non of them are Eden/Jessie worthy, looking for someone/something that gave him those sorts of feelings... if that makes any sense
That being said. I do really like both your analysis and it does makes a lot of sense what Dave had to say. Also I have to mention that the next track is just phenomenal but til then, stay safe

It's a really great track and it definitely has a lot of meaning, specifically with the video clip. And yes, the next track is a rough one.

I had the same thoughts about this song. Its so good. Enjoying the journey, guys. You definitely deserve more views. Are you going to go through the eps and singles? Even if you don't rank them. I'd be interested in hearing you're thoughts on those. If you guys are up to it,I know going through these takes a while, 😅. Also I'm seeing Sleep Token for the first time next Friday. Super excited.

Until we get fresh drops from them again (as a more recent fan, it would be my first time experiencing the agony of waiting for fresh drops)
I have a different interpretation on this one.
I feel like this is a song from Vessel’s real life partner (Eden). She’s with him, but he’s shown red flags to the point where she’s leaving him. “I’ll find a different harbor to lay my anchor in.” She’s been trying to have a hard conversation with him, but it’s proven to difficult for various reasons. Vessel has secrets (swallowed keys) about Sleep, which has made him distant and put further strain on an already shaky relationship.
There’s a lot of lore in this song. IMO, Sleep may not be real, but a side effect or something similar resulting from disease. As many have pointed out before, Sundowning relates to Alzheimer’s and dementia. What if Vessel never actually met Sleep? What if he’s just mentally ill? Sleep could just be a hallucination as a result of Alzheimer’s/dementia. If you approach this song with that in mind (along with other songs), it makes sense that she sees his talk/obsessions with Sleep as a freak show because to her Sleep isn’t real.
I think this works with the video, too. Some say that if you want to remember something you tie a ribbon to help you remember. All the ribbons in the tree are the memories that Vessel has of Eden. Though as he becomes more obsessed with “Sleep” he starts cutting down the memories of Eden, but the love is ultimately too strong to be cut down completely and Sleep is unable to take total control of Vessel. In doing this, Vessel (who has some sort of mental illness) recovers another memory of Eden and ties another ribbon to remember.
The lyrics leave so much up for interpretation. That’s what makes this fun.
I enjoy the videos here. I realize I’m a few months late to the party, but this is great. I’ll keep watching.

Brah. That was amazing. What a fantastic interpretation! Imagine this whole time he has had this secret that has had been hiding from his partner about an ancient deitity. And all along Sleep wasn't even real and he was being distant for no real reason.

This song to me, feels like Vess is trying to move on, more like convincing himself that he's the better person, she's at a loss for not taking him when he is/was full of the good stuff.
It feels like it would be a good anthem of all the girlies who have a makeover after a breakup, trying to make the ex see what he/she lost. "I'll find a different harbor to lay my anchor in, and you'll find a different way to keep from setting sail again" -- like when people go on a rebound relationship to make the ex jealous? It's what it sounds like to me
But the music video seems to depict that even though that's how Vess wants to come off, it's all for show. In the end, he's still the one falling over and over for her.
If my interpretation of the lyrics is correct, i don't like the theme of this song. It's bordering on using someone else to get back at Eden/Jess. It's mean. So for this song, it's at #33 for me. Moving up drag me under, like that and sugar to #30-32. Below this are still dark signs and give at #34-35.
It's funny how dave says this album is front-loaded, but my faves from this album are definitely the 2nd half. ☺️

I wholeheartedly agree that Vessel wants to act like he's getting over it, but then the whole episode repeats itself eventually because he goes back to pining over his lost love. Absolutely sounds like he would be hunting for a rebound. It could have been me Vessel...😝
