About 45 seconds before you said "I didn't enjoy my pregnancy" I burst into tears. Then you cried and I cried like a baby 😭 I'm 29 weeks along with my first. My mother loved being pregnant. I've struggled so much more than I thought I would. It's been such a strange experience. I'm starting to feel more calm now but we will see how that lasts 😂. I’m 30 weeks with my second (due Jan 30) and I hated my first pregnancy and also hated this one!! Both were so different my first was a whole lot worse than this one but once they are here it is all worth it. My mom also loved being pregnant and I’m like… how!?!!!?

My first pregnancy was hard physically and mentally on me I was 5’10 125 pounds very fit and I literally felt every muscle ripping in my stomach from the growing belly I hated it I was sooo miserable I had no glow a pregnant mask and hurt all over until the day she was born my water broke at 34 weeks with her due to PROM but my second I felt so sexy pregnant with him easy pregnancy (other then gallbladder getting infected at 32 weeks) and emergency c section from infection at 35 weeks..my third also a boy I felt so sexy and was glowing but my 4th and final baby a girl and was MISERABLE had no glow and everything hurt lol the girls took all my beauty and energy but the boys I felt so sexy and had so much energy

I still remember that insane feeling of while your baby takes her first breath I also took what felt like my first breath if that makes sense. It was like I was as light as air again. All the anxiety and pressure and emotions just melted away like I had been holding my breath for 10 months. We are here for you, will be the best mommy!!💕
I am an Ultrasound tech, and it is difficult to explain to non-medical people how I experienced my C-section... It is exactly like you say, you know every single step in the process so even though you don't feel, you do "feel" as you know every step and understand the process. The mental strain was also so intense, as I knew exactly what could go wrong... I was admitted for an emergency C-section at 37weeks after developing pre-eclampsia. At time of admission my blood pressure was 180/120, I had severe leg and hand swelling and protein in my urine. I had the perfect pregnancy until I didn't and then non of the meds helped and my BP just kept going up. It was very scary as I understood that there is a big risk that I could get a stroke or bleed out on the table... I just cried when she was born and I heard her cry! All my projections through my pregnancy prepared us for a really big baby, and I was not mentally ready for the tiny little human that I got at a mere 2.8kg (6.2lbs). She was also covered in vernix and full of tiny little hairs (on her shoulders, back and ears). After she was born I started shaking uncontrollably (side effect of the anaesthesia) so I couldn't do skin-to-skin which I was devastated about and was kept in recovery for about an hour to control the shaking... I'm from South Africa and over here they take the babies to the nursery along with dad, and while mom is in recovery they do skin-to-skin with dad :) My leg swelling and high blood pressure persisted for a month post-partum. In the end all was well and we had a healthy baby and healthy mom. Our tiny princess is now 7years old and soooooo tall. But nothing could prepare me for how tiny she was after birth - she worn newborn clothes and a size 0 nappy for 4 months... My mother-in-law had to go shopping urgently as we had no newborn size clothing as her projected birth weight was 4,8kg (10.5lbs)
Ob here too. I agree that as Ob's, our birth experiences, create amazing opportunities for insight and empathy for our patients. I can now truly relate to others, having gone through IVF, non-working epidurals, Cook balloon & pitocin, getting HELLP and magnesium (worse than I thought), unplanned cesarean section (could feel my partners closing fascia and skin given the not great epidural), triple feeds, etc. It's made me a better doctor for sure. Perspective is powerful.
And congratulations! Take as much time for leave as you can :) I also think hospitalist life is good for when we have kids (especially compared to private practice I imagine). I'm a generalist still but now part time and work for Kaiser, so great balance!
Amazing story. Birth is such a miracle. I am due in 4 months and my 1st delivery was very traumatic because of the domino effect of not needed interventions . This time around I am so so excited for the birth ! I am planning a home birth and just cannot wait until I hear the cry and see the gender of the baby. First time around I did not see the baby come out due to being put to sleep. Take care of yourself and congratulations again 🎉

Girl I don’t know much about how a c-section works, but after having one…I can assure you we all feel just as much anxiety. I think it’s just a mom thing. Our intuition and heart knows something is off and as a mama that is terrifying. Sending you, hubby and baby girl lots of love.
I am also an OB/GYN and had my first baby preterm (unplanned) 11 weeks ago. I identify with you in so many ways and I truly believe our experiences will make us better clinicians. I was so humbled by the experience of pregnancy, delivery, postpartum “blues”, and breastfeeding. Keep it up mama!

Oh bless you, I write this as you’re crying. Don’t feel guilty about not enjoying being pregnant. I have two children, and was hospitalised during both pregnancies. The anxiety, the stress!!! Brings back a flood of memories-some positive & some not so much. 3 kids & all 3 were C-Sect due to severe preclampsia all thru pregnancies. But, all 3 kids are now in their 30's. Loved the honesty & emotions.
Bless you for having the courage to have more kids after your first severe preeclampsia. I had postpartum preeclampsia with my last child, and we have decided that we won’t be risking it again.
When I was pregnant with my 2nd I was in nursing school and it was during my OB semester/clinical! When I tell you I was soooo anxious because of everything I had learned. I thought everything was going to go wrong with my baby. But he’s a happy healthy 5 yr old! Those anxious predictions are the worse! Congratulations! She’s beautiful!
Congratulations!! Had my c section on 11/8/23 and our stories are VERY similar. I was 38.5 weeks. My little one is doing well, doing breast milk and supplementing bc she lost a lb last week but it was all in all a great experience. As an older mom, the anxiety you spoke about during pregnancy was HORRIBLE. I was convinced my baby wasn’t going to make it to the end and therefore I had no life the last 2 months of pregnancy. I had 3x avg fluid and no gestational diabetes. It just wasn’t ideal lol. So happy for you. Have a Happy Holiday Season with your bubba.
That sense of relief you describe when you heard her cry, I totally felt that too. I had the same issues, oligo and having a breech baby and delivering at 36 weeks (actually on 11/11 as well!) and I was so worried the whole time I was pregnant that something was wrong and he wouldn’t be okay. I absolutely sobbed when I heard his cry because of the relief and the hormones, it was such a beautiful moment. I’ve enjoyed following along during your pregnancy and I’m so glad that both our babies are safe and healthy!
Beautiful story ❤ I've had 3 c sections and that tugging and pulling is real. Feels so weird and uncomfortable. I remember the doc/nurses counting their tools at the end and I didn't quite know why then lol. Your baby is so precious. Enjoy her. They grow up super fast. ❤
I relate so much to this. I am a NICU nurse in a level 4 nicu were we treat micropremies so 23+ weeks. In a hospital that treats high risk pregnancies. When working with these babies we also need to know mom's condition as to why she is delivering early so i know the generally the different conditions that affect our moms. I know too much, and have had a misscrage very early in my last pregnancy and I am a ball of anxiety with my current pregnancy. To a degree I am stopping myself from getting too attached because I know too much. I have to tell myself that what I see is not the majority of pregnacies.
I just found you a few weeks ago and watching your videos has been healing. Congratulations! I just got diagnosed with ovarian cancer last monday before Thanksgiving and lost an ovary on November 14th. I am 37. I beat breast cancer at age 33. I am grieving. Despite that, this makes me so unbelievably happy! Seriously. It gives me hope or it’s just really nice to hear the honesty. I loved your story! Thank you for sharing! I totally understand that relief of hearing that very first cry! My son was born at 38 weeks and came out very dusky and not really crying. They had to take him over to the warmer and call a NICU nurse to assess him because his breathing was too slow and he needed some oxygen. As soon as he let out that loud vigorous cry I lost it! As someone who has gone through the c-section experience twice, it is comforting to have an OBGYN experience and talk about it. I think it helps makes you more understanding of your patients. I had a terrible experience with my first doctor and I would never want any other woman to go through what I did. Congrats on the addition mama!

Thank you for verbalizing these very intense feelings! It makes me feel less ashamed of how difficult both my pregnancies and deliveries were and the completely crippling anxiety I felt the entire duration of my pregnancies. That moment the pediatric doctors finally told me they were both okay were the 2 most reliving happy moments of my life.
Thanks for sharing your story. My daughter was born almost a year ago and I started tearing up with you when you talked about the relief you felt as soon as she was born. I felt the same way during my pregnancy - even though I am not a doctor myself, I struggled with anxiety during my pregnancy and so much of that disappeared when she was born. When my friends and family talk about postpartum anxiety, I don’t have a lot to add because my anxiety was really centered on pregnancy and not being able to see her and make sure she was okay. Thank you so much for sharing your story-it helps alleviate my anxiety around my upcoming c-section. I’m 42, and 39 weeks pregnant, and I went in to be induced for vaginal delivery on Thanksgiving, but my baby (who had been head down, but not engaged) had rotated and is now breech. So I was scheduled to have a c-section that night, but the hospital changed their protocol in October and no one realized it until an hour before my surgery, so it was canceled because it wasn’t an emergency situation. And then the scheduling was closed for the holidays. So now my doctor has to call on Monday and hope for a Tuesday opening-and I am so nervous. But seriously: hearing your story has helped make this process a lot less scary.

The protocol that changed was: no “elective surgery” after 5pm, weekends, or holidays in order to make the surgical teams and facilities available for emergency cases. And even though I am a high risk pregnancy (because of my age), getting a c-section was still considered “elective” because I wasn’t in labor (even though the baby is breech). However, if I do go into labor between now and the c-section, it will be considered an emergency. And I’d rather not be in an emergency situation at all.
It is so hard when you know everything that could happen and are going to happen. I was a L& D nurse and then worked in the OR for 18 years. I can completely understand. I went through the same feelings and anxieties when I was pregnant. I had hyperemesis with my first. I was hospitalized 3 times during the first 6 months when I was vomiting morning, noon and night. I worked afternoon shift at the time. When we would go to the cafeteria for lunch, everyone went with me and nobody would buy any food. I would usually have 2 trays because I was so hungry at that point, I would sit down to eat and the smell of the food would hit me and I would fly to the bathroom. When I would get back, all the food would be gone from the tray and they were all eating. Lol. I was sick for 6 and 1/2 months and went into preterm labor at 7 months. You are doing amazing and Ellie is beautiful. Congrats ❤❤❤

Yup. I’ve joined the c-section troops. Not easy at all. I had to be out to sleep. I’m five weeks after now I think. I’m still not 100%. Nope not. I’m better but I’ve got a ways to go. Anyway, congratulations and I’m glad all is well. Also, i have pumped and hand expressed and it’s the first time I’ve had a hard time with breast feeding. I’ve breast fed four before this one. It’s also my first c-section. Anyway, my milk is also on now and hoping I’ll continue to take enough. Keep going. And my heart goes out to all NICU and c-section mamas out there.

My C-sec was with gen anesthesia (my blood pallets were going down for a lil more that a week) I wasn't awake so I have no idea what was going on and my husband wasn't allowed in the surgery room. I remembered the horrible pain I felt when I woke up from anesthesia and listening to my anesthesiologist "give me the morphine" and going off again. I heard my husband telling me "el nene pesó 8lbs 15oz" and then I woke up next day.
Wow! Hearing you talked about your epidural experience made me extremely sad and furious at Weill Cornell(NYC). I had the worst experience there in 2012. First of, they insisted on an emergency c-section, scaring my then boyfriend that the baby is in distressed, her heart beat is flactuating despite me repeatedly telling them its because I kept pushing the monitors they placed on my belly coz its too tight, it hurts. Then the nurse that was there when they iniected my spine was so awful, she kept smacking my hand off of her hands(I accidentally grabbed her hands twice coz of the pain). She wasn't nice at all. And whats even worse was me hearing them scramble to find the main anesthesiologist! (They had student doctors surround me)they friggin poke that huge needle wrong(God knows who poked me first) and all I heard was commotion(while Im still in that position on the edge of the bed), call Dr. so and so quick. After couple minutes, the main anesthesiologist came and thats when they finally successfully gave me the epidural 😢. It was so traumatizing, they took advantage of my ignorance and absence of family members with me. Wish I had a better experience 😢. Congratulations and enjoy that little cutie. They grow so fast.
i had to have an emergency c section and they had such a hard time with the spinal tab it took so much longer than expected and my back was so bruised up afterwards. They were very nice just had trouble getting me numbed up. Glad to hear hers went smoothly

The moment that you spoke about how relieved you were after you gave birth touched my heart. I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and miscarried. The anxiety is overwhelming and I feel so disconnected because of my anxiety. So when you said pregnancy was miserable, I feel you. It's exactly how I feel. I am just constantly worried, it's happy to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Your experience is gonna be a game changer for treating your patients.......they will be lucky to have you in their corner especially if they are high-risk. What's up with all this Percocet & Oxytocin use in the US? In the Caribbean we mostly use Diclofenac Sodium or Potassium for most post-surgery patients - it works well to treat inflammation & pain. I realize many providers in the US are not familiar with it🤷🏽♀️
My after birth pains were so terrible with babies 4 and 5. Every time I nursed was agonizing. I could've used a tap block. You look beautiful and baby is perfect! Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us!

Had six babies never had pains after was up walking about very quick briths big baby always late low blood last son at 45 gas air 9.9 his arms were coming out lots of sections but up and looking after 2year 14no time to rest x
Mine were just as bad as the contractions this time around (#4). I heard with each pregnancy it gets worse which makes sense because this was the worst I've ever experienced.

I also had low fluid and breech baby, delivered Oct 20. My midwife actually asked me if I had COVID prior to pregnancy, which I did, two months prior. She said anecdotally they are seeing this correlation. 😢
Your story and your honesty I think is so necessary to process pregnancy and delivery I think...I wasn't able to hold my baby, I met him intubated and on a morphine drip, I wasn't able to hold him until his second day of life ... I was devastated to have a c-section but it was necessary, and although I pumped for two months he's allergic to lactose and cow protein.. , i teared up when you said her cry made you know she was healthy as my baby couldn't really cry for the dtga he was born with ...the process is so deep in our hearts and what we say and do is a reflection of all the emotions we constantly feel...I congratulate you for being an advocate for pregnancy and teaching us ,and for sharing such a personal journey as becoming a mother ...

I am so glad your precious little girl arrived safely and that she’s healthy! I am 18 weeks pregnant right now. I am pretty scared about birth, but mainly because I have all this knowledge about natural birth, and that’s not what I’m doing. I am in wk 35 my pains "pelvic" ans side pains are killing me at night.. i am supposed to have my c section in wk 39.. my mum was supposed to come from UK and unfortunately she fell few days ago broke her arm and then had a huge surgery and now im 4 wks away from my c section i have a 7 yo boy.. my husband works 15 hrs a day.. idk what am i going to do how am i going to go through all this alone.. i love my mum I can't imagine anything without her her... and now i have no options i have faith in Allah only.. I just had my first baby this month on the 8th and I actually felt a lot of pain during my cesarean. I also ended up hemorrhaging and needing a transfusion. It was honestly very traumatic. I’m honestly very grateful to God my baby is healthy and I’m recovering. Congrats on your baby she is beautiful God bless.❤
Im Crying! You describing your feelings after she was delivered almost mirrored my own. My 2nd pregnancy was also stressful and I spent the whole time an anxious mess. My son was also growth restricted and I worried up until the minute that he was born and it was such a RELIEF! You said it best, it was the biggest sigh of relief I had taken my whole pregnancy. Congrats Dr. Ali, I too had a C-section back in 2000, my son was breech and I had eclampsia. My blood pressure was 200 over 100 something and after my son was born my BP was 60 something over 40 something. I was a walking miracle.
OMG i am not a doctor or anywhere close to being but I never imagined during my pregnancy that I would go 2 weeks late and have to have an emergency c section, but the way you described the feeling when you heard her cry. That was how I felt. While laying on the table during surgery I was thinking this is crazy how did i end up here and when the doctor said I had a little boy and heard him cry (we waited to find out the gender) but I felt like the world had been lifted off of me knowing he was okay. It's so hard to even explain the experience. It makes me feel so much better to hear someone that I can relate the most with, because all my sister's and friends just didn't have that type of experience or even the emotions like i went through
I had a similar experience with you in my pregnancy. I am also a first mom, and becoming a first mom experiencing preeclampsia, a c-section and a baby born premature, it was really scary and overwhelming. It's like everything happened in a blink of an eye. Before my c-section, I was brought to the hospital for observation first to try and lower my blood pressure since it was 150/100 it would only go down 130. So the doctor decided to do the c-section, also my amniotic fluid started to decrease. And, my baby born was born premature 34-35 weeks, also had a growth restriction, weighed 1.300 kg. He is now 18 months thriving and is developmentally catched up with his age, but is small for his age. I went through the same feelings you felt, doubt, guilt, angry at myself etc. But after birth, holding him for the KMC, I felt proud and proud of him. ❤ You got this! ❤ Congratulations!
I felt that same relief when my baby was born last month. It was pure bliss to have her out of my body and finally see her move, cry, breath, alive and well. It also felt wonderful to not be pregnant anymore. despite the lack of sleep and the recovery from birth, I feel so good and so much better than when I was pregnant.

So happy for you! Thank G-d everyone is safe and happy! It is so emotional! you dont realize until you have your own child how emotions play a huge role in pregnancy/birth. I have a blood incompatibility with my husband and thank G-d we have 3 healthy children. We didnt know of the issue till after my first blood test from my second pregnancy came back and it was pretty scary. It just makes me realize how thankful I have to be for each step of the way. I love hearing csection stories. I had an emergancy csection with my first. I had gestational diabetes and was induced, i had a reaction to pethadine and then started bleeding a lot when they burst my waters. a few hours in, my baby didnt have a detectable heartbeat so resulted in an emergancy csection. It honestly felt like i was in there 5 minutes it was so quick. We were both fine in the end. I opted for an elective csection with my second, i had to have him at 38 weeks. The spinal went to my brain, it messed with my heart too. during the csection i was screaming, crying, being sick the lot. I couldnt see, i had multiple injections of medication for everything. It was horrible. Ive got ptsd from it, and i have a heart condition now. But me and baby are fine. Us csection mamas are warriors. Its not easy. Unfortunately, I don’t remember a thing until I finally met him 3 weeks ago after he was born and I was in rehab. I had an AFE and hemorrhagic stroke when he was born. I ended up having a hysterectomy among other things. He’s 14 now and I’m so happy he’s a good kid. I lucked out with my little miracle child!❤
She’s precious! Could you please share more about what happened with your preeclampsia after delivery? How is your BP postpartum? Mine got way worse after delivery.
Great question! My BP normalized after delivery. It hasn’t been an issue for me since delivery. I didn’t develop postpartum preeclampsia but I know it was a possibility and I will continue to monitor my BP and try my best to optimize my health with diet/exercise once I’m cleared from my OBGYN to start exercising!

About 45 seconds before you said "I didn't enjoy my pregnancy" I burst into tears. Then you cried and I cried like a baby 😭 I'm 29 weeks along with my first. My mother loved being pregnant. I've struggled so much more than I thought I would. It's been such a strange experience. I'm starting to feel more calm now but we will see how that lasts 😂. I am 27 weeks and I burst into tears right along with you. I lost my first pregnancy at 7 weeks. I have had so much anxiety during this pregnancy. I just want to go to sleep and wake up with my baby beside me lol.
My first pregnancy was hard physically and mentally on me I was 5’10 125 pounds very fit and I literally felt every muscle ripping in my stomach from the growing belly I hated it I was sooo miserable I had no glow a pregnant mask and hurt all over until the day she was born my water broke at 34 weeks with her due to PROM but my second I felt so sexy pregnant with him easy pregnancy (other then gallbladder getting infected at 32 weeks) and emergency c section from infection at 35 weeks..my third also a boy I felt so sexy and was glowing but my 4th and final baby a girl and was MISERABLE had no glow and everything hurt lol the girls took all my beauty and energy but the boys I felt so sexy and had so much energy

I still remember that insane feeling of while your baby takes her first breath I also took what felt like my first breath if that makes sense. It was like I was as light as air again. All the anxiety and pressure and emotions just melted away like I had been holding my breath for 10 months. We are here for you, will be the best mommy!!💕
I am an Ultrasound tech, and it is difficult to explain to non-medical people how I experienced my C-section... It is exactly like you say, you know every single step in the process so even though you don't feel, you do "feel" as you know every step and understand the process. The mental strain was also so intense, as I knew exactly what could go wrong... I was admitted for an emergency C-section at 37weeks after developing pre-eclampsia. At time of admission my blood pressure was 180/120, I had severe leg and hand swelling and protein in my urine. I had the perfect pregnancy until I didn't and then non of the meds helped and my BP just kept going up. It was very scary as I understood that there is a big risk that I could get a stroke or bleed out on the table... I just cried when she was born and I heard her cry! All my projections through my pregnancy prepared us for a really big baby, and I was not mentally ready for the tiny little human that I got at a mere 2.8kg (6.2lbs). She was also covered in vernix and full of tiny little hairs (on her shoulders, back and ears). After she was born I started shaking uncontrollably (side effect of the anaesthesia) so I couldn't do skin-to-skin which I was devastated about and was kept in recovery for about an hour to control the shaking... I'm from South Africa and over here they take the babies to the nursery along with dad, and while mom is in recovery they do skin-to-skin with dad :) My leg swelling and high blood pressure persisted for a month post-partum. In the end all was well and we had a healthy baby and healthy mom. Our tiny princess is now 7years old and soooooo tall. But nothing could prepare me for how tiny she was after birth - she worn newborn clothes and a size 0 nappy for 4 months... My mother-in-law had to go shopping urgently as we had no newborn size clothing as her projected birth weight was 4,8kg (10.5lbs)
Ob here too. I agree that as Ob's, our birth experiences, create amazing opportunities for insight and empathy for our patients. I can now truly relate to others, having gone through IVF, non-working epidurals, Cook balloon & pitocin, getting HELLP and magnesium (worse than I thought), unplanned cesarean section (could feel my partners closing fascia and skin given the not great epidural), triple feeds, etc. It's made me a better doctor for sure. Perspective is powerful.

I also think hospitalist life is good for when we have kids (especially compared to private practice I imagine). I'm a generalist still but now part time and work for Kaiser, so great balance!

Amazing story. Birth is such a miracle. I am due in 4 months and my 1st delivery was very traumatic because of the domino effect of not needed interventions . This time around I am so so excited for the birth ! I am planning a home birth and just cannot wait until I hear the cry and see the gender of the baby. First time around I did not see the baby come out due to being put to sleep. Take care of yourself and congratulations again 🎉

Girl I don’t know much about how a c-section works, but after having one…I can assure you we all feel just as much anxiety. I think it’s just a mom thing. Our intuition and heart knows something is off and as a mama that is terrifying. Sending you, hubby and baby girl lots of love.

Brings back a flood of memories-some positive & some not so much. 3 kids & all 3 were C-Sect due to severe preclampsia all thru pregnancies. But, all 3 kids are now in their 30's. Loved the honesty & emotions.
Bless you for having the courage to have more kids after your first severe preeclampsia. I had postpartum preeclampsia with my last child, and we have decided that we won’t be risking it again.

When I was pregnant with my 2nd I was in nursing school and it was during my OB semester/clinical! When I tell you I was soooo anxious because of everything I had learned. I thought everything was going to go wrong with my baby. But he’s a happy healthy 5 yr old! Those anxious predictions are the worse! Congratulations! She’s beautiful!
Congratulations!! Had my c section on 11/8/23 and our stories are VERY similar. I was 38.5 weeks. My little one is doing well, doing breast milk and supplementing bc she lost a lb last week but it was all in all a great experience. As an older mom, the anxiety you spoke about during pregnancy was HORRIBLE. I was convinced my baby wasn’t going to make it to the end and therefore I had no life the last 2 months of pregnancy. I had 3x avg fluid and no gestational diabetes. It just wasn’t ideal lol.

That sense of relief you describe when you heard her cry, I totally felt that too. I had the same issues, oligo and having a breech baby and delivering at 36 weeks (actually on 11/11 as well!) and I was so worried the whole time I was pregnant that something was wrong and he wouldn’t be okay. I absolutely sobbed when I heard his cry because of the relief and the hormones, it was such a beautiful moment. I’ve enjoyed following along during your pregnancy and I’m so glad that both our babies are safe and healthy!

I relate so much to this. I am a NICU nurse in a level 4 nicu were we treat micropremies so 23+ weeks. In a hospital that treats high risk pregnancies. When working with these babies we also need to know mom's condition as to why she is delivering early so i know the generally the different conditions that affect our moms. I know too much, and have had a misscrage very early in my last pregnancy and I am a ball of anxiety with my current pregnancy. To a degree I am stopping myself from getting too attached because I know too much. I have to tell myself that what I see is not the majority of pregnacies.
I just found you a few weeks ago and watching your videos has been healing. Congratulations! I just got diagnosed with ovarian cancer last monday before Thanksgiving and lost an ovary on November 14th. I am 37. I beat breast cancer at age 33. I am grieving. Despite that, this makes me so unbelievably happy! Seriously. It gives me hope or it’s just really nice to hear the honesty. My son was born at 38 weeks and came out very dusky and not really crying. They had to take him over to the warmer and call a NICU nurse to assess him because his breathing was too slow and he needed some oxygen.
As soon as he let out that loud vigorous cry I lost it! I cried tears of joy and relief! 💙

As someone who has gone through the c-section experience twice, it is comforting to have an OBGYN experience and talk about it. I think it helps makes you more understanding of your patients. It makes me feel less ashamed of how difficult both my pregnancies and deliveries were and the completely crippling anxiety I felt the entire duration of my pregnancies. That moment the pediatric doctors finally told me they were both okay were the 2 most reliving happy moments of my life.
Thanks for sharing your story. My daughter was born almost a year ago and I started tearing up with you when you talked about the relief you felt as soon as she was born. I felt the same way during my pregnancy - even though I am not a doctor myself, I struggled with anxiety during my pregnancy and so much of that disappeared when she was born. When my friends and family talk about postpartum anxiety, I don’t have a lot to add because my anxiety was really centered on pregnancy and not being able to see her and make sure she was okay. Congratulations. I had Pre-Eclampsia with both of my premies. Emergency C-sections both after being in labour. They are now 40 and 44. Enjoy every minute. Time goes by too fast.

Thank you so much for sharing your story-it helps alleviate my anxiety around my upcoming c-section. I’m 42, and 39 weeks pregnant, and I went in to be induced for vaginal delivery on Thanksgiving, but my baby (who had been head down, but not engaged) had rotated and is now breech. So I was scheduled to have a c-section that night, but the hospital changed their protocol in October and no one realized it until an hour before my surgery, so it was canceled because it wasn’t an emergency situation. And then the scheduling was closed for the holidays. So now my doctor has to call on Monday and hope for a Tuesday opening-and I am so nervous. But seriously: hearing your story has helped make this process a lot less scary.

The protocol that changed was: no “elective surgery” after 5pm, weekends, or holidays in order to make the surgical teams and facilities available for emergency cases. And even though I am a high risk pregnancy (because of my age), getting a c-section was still considered “elective” because I wasn’t in labor (even though the baby is breech). However, if I do go into labor between now and the c-section, it will be considered an emergency. And I’d rather not be in an emergency situation at all.

It is so hard when you know everything that could happen and are going to happen. I was a L& D nurse and then worked in the OR for 18 years. I can completely understand. I went through the same feelings and anxieties when I was pregnant. I had hyperemesis with my first. I was hospitalized 3 times during the first 6 months when I was vomiting morning, noon and night. I worked afternoon shift at the time. When we would go to the cafeteria for lunch, everyone went with me and nobody would buy any food. I would usually have 2 trays because I was so hungry at that point, I would sit down to eat and the smell of the food would hit me and I would fly to the bathroom. When I would get back, all the food would be gone from the tray and they were all eating. Lol. I was sick for 6 and 1/2 months and went into preterm labor at 7 months.

Yup. I’ve joined the c-section troops. Not easy at all. I had to be out to sleep. I’m five weeks after now I think. I’m still not 100%. Nope not. I’m better but I’ve got a ways to go. Anyway, congratulations and I’m glad all is well. Also, i have pumped and hand expressed and it’s the first time I’ve had a hard time with breast feeding. I’ve breast fed four before this one. It’s also my first c-section. Anyway, my milk is also on now and hoping I’ll continue to take enough. Keep going. And my heart goes out to all NICU and c-section mamas out there.

Thank you for candid share of your experience. I do believe it would help u in your practice. My C-sec was with gen anesthesia (my blood pallets were going down for a lil more that a week) I wasn't awake so I have no idea what was going on and my husband wasn't allowed in the surgery room. I remembered the horrible pain I felt when I woke up from anesthesia and listening to my anesthesiologist "give me the morphine" and going off again. I heard my husband telling me "el nene pesó 8lbs 15oz" and then I woke up next day.

Wow! Hearing you talked about your epidural experience made me extremely sad and furious at Weill Cornell(NYC). I had the worst experience there in 2012. First of, they insisted on an emergency c-section, scaring my then boyfriend that the baby is in distressed, her heart beat is flactuating despite me repeatedly telling them its because I kept pushing the monitors they placed on my belly coz its too tight, it hurts. Then the nurse that was there when they iniected my spine was so awful, she kept smacking my hand off of her hands(I accidentally grabbed her hands twice coz of the pain). She wasn't nice at all. And whats even worse was me hearing them scramble to find the main anesthesiologist! (They had student doctors surround me)they friggin poke that huge needle wrong(God knows who poked me first) and all I heard was commotion(while Im still in that position on the edge of the bed), call Dr. so and so quick. After couple minutes, the main anesthesiologist came and thats when they finally successfully gave me the epidural 😢. It was so traumatizing, they took advantage of my ignorance and absence of family members with me. Wish I had a better experience 😢. Congratulations and enjoy that little cutie. They grow so fast.
i had to have an emergency c section and they had such a hard time with the spinal tab it took so much longer than expected and my back was so bruised up afterwards. They were very nice just had trouble getting me numbed up. Glad to hear hers went smoothly

The moment that you spoke about how relieved you were after you gave birth touched my heart. I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and miscarried. The anxiety is overwhelming and I feel so disconnected because of my anxiety. So when you said pregnancy was miserable, I feel you. It's exactly how I feel. I am just constantly worried, it's happy to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

What's up with all this Percocet & Oxytocin use in the US? In the Caribbean we mostly use Diclofenac Sodium or Potassium for most post-surgery patients - it works well to treat inflammation & pain. I realize many providers in the US are not familiar with it🤷🏽♀️
My after birth pains were so terrible with babies 4 and 5. Every time I nursed was agonizing. I could've used a tap block. You look beautiful and baby is perfect! Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us!

I also had low fluid and breech baby, delivered Oct 20. My midwife actually asked me if I had COVID prior to pregnancy, which I did, two months prior. She said anecdotally they are seeing this correlation. 😢
Your story and your honesty I think is so necessary to process pregnancy and delivery I think...I wasn't able to hold my baby, I met him intubated and on a morphine drip, I wasn't able to hold him until his second day of life ... I was devastated to have a c-section but it was necessary, and although I pumped for two months he's allergic to lactose and cow protein.. , i teared up when you said her cry made you know she was healthy as my baby couldn't really cry for the dtga he was born with ...the process is so deep in our hearts and what we say and do is a reflection of all the emotions we constantly feel...I congratulate you for being an advocate for pregnancy and teaching us ,and for sharing such a personal journey as becoming a mother ...

I am so glad your precious little girl arrived safely and that she’s healthy! I am 18 weeks pregnant right now. I am in wk 35 my pains "pelvic" ans side pains are killing me at night.. i am supposed to have my c section in wk 39.. my mum was supposed to come from UK and unfortunately she fell few days ago broke her arm and then had a huge surgery and now im 4 wks away from my c section i have a 7 yo boy.. my husband works 15 hrs a day.. idk what am i going to do how am i going to go through all this alone.. i love my mum I can't imagine anything without her her... and now i have no options i have faith in Allah only.. Happy that everyone is healthy and well! I hated my c section experience. I felt pain, they didn’t do any of what you’ve said. It was awful, it gave me PTSD. I feel like I felt a lot more than I should’ve. Recovery was a bit rough too and them pressing on your uterus was wild. Wishing you all the best! Beautiful mom and baby! ❤

I just had my first baby this month on the 8th and I actually felt a lot of pain during my cesarean. I also ended up hemorrhaging and needing a transfusion. It was honestly very traumatic. I’m honestly very grateful to God my baby is healthy and I’m recovering. Congrats on your baby she is beautiful God bless.❤
Im Crying! You describing your feelings after she was delivered almost mirrored my own. My 2nd pregnancy was also stressful and I spent the whole time an anxious mess. My son was also growth restricted and I worried up until the minute that he was born and it was such a RELIEF! You said it best, it was the biggest sigh of relief I had taken my whole pregnancy. Congrats Dr. Ali, I too had a C-section back in 2000, my son was breech and I had eclampsia. My blood pressure was 200 over 100 something and after my son was born my BP was 60 something over 40 something. I was a walking miracle.

OMG i am not a doctor or anywhere close to being but I never imagined during my pregnancy that I would go 2 weeks late and have to have an emergency c section, but the way you described the feeling when you heard her cry. That was how I felt. While laying on the table during surgery I was thinking this is crazy how did i end up here and when the doctor said I had a little boy and heard him cry (we waited to find out the gender) but I felt like the world had been lifted off of me knowing he was okay. It's so hard to even explain the experience. It makes me feel so much better to hear someone that I can relate the most with, because all my sister's and friends just didn't have that type of experience or even the emotions like i went through
I had a similar experience with you in my pregnancy. I am also a first mom, and becoming a first mom experiencing preeclampsia, a c-section and a baby born premature, it was really scary and overwhelming. It's like everything happened in a blink of an eye.
Before my c-section, I was brought to the hospital for observation first to try and lower my blood pressure since it was 150/100 it would only go down 130. So the doctor decided to do the c-section, also my amniotic fluid started to decrease.
And, my baby born was born premature 34-35 weeks, also had a growth restriction, weighed 1.300 kg.
He is now 18 months thriving and is developmentally catched up with his age, but is small for his age.
I went through the same feelings you felt, doubt, guilt, angry at myself etc. But after birth, holding him for the KMC, I felt proud and proud of him. ❤

I felt that same relief when my baby was born last month. It was pure bliss to have her out of my body and finally see her move, cry, breath, alive and well. It also felt wonderful to not be pregnant anymore. despite the lack of sleep and the recovery from birth, I feel so good and so much better than when I was pregnant.

I have a blood incompatibility with my husband and thank G-d we have 3 healthy children. We didnt know of the issue till after my first blood test from my second pregnancy came back and it was pretty scary. It just makes me realize how thankful I have to be for each step of the way. I love hearing csection stories. I had an emergancy csection with my first. I had gestational diabetes and was induced, i had a reaction to pethadine and then started bleeding a lot when they burst my waters. a few hours in, my baby didnt have a detectable heartbeat so resulted in an emergancy csection. It honestly felt like i was in there 5 minutes it was so quick. We were both fine in the end.
I opted for an elective csection with my second, i had to have him at 38 weeks. The spinal went to my brain, it messed with my heart too. during the csection i was screaming, crying, being sick the lot. I couldnt see, i had multiple injections of medication for everything. It was horrible. Ive got ptsd from it, and i have a heart condition now. But me and baby are fine.

Unfortunately, I don’t remember a thing until I finally met him 3 weeks ago after he was born and I was in rehab. I had an AFE and hemorrhagic stroke when he was born. I ended up having a hysterectomy among other things. He’s 14 now and I’m so happy he’s a good kid. I lucked out with my little miracle child!❤
She’s precious! Could you please share more about what happened with your preeclampsia after delivery? How is your BP postpartum? Mine got way worse after delivery.
Great question! My BP normalized after delivery. It hasn’t been an issue for me since delivery. I didn’t develop postpartum preeclampsia but I know it was a possibility and I will continue to monitor my BP and try my best to optimize my health with diet/exercise once I’m cleared from my OBGYN to start exercising!
