as someone who just recently finished a broadcast order haruhi rewatch, i gotta say i've also grown to prefer it over chronological. S1 really is brilliantly executed. and S2... well I personally *liked* endless eight, but this is where i think the order shows its weaknesses. having sigh right before disappearance is just such a jarring shift in many respects. you basically get one of the worst arcs in the series (i don't even hate sigh as much as other people do btw) right before one of the best arcs, hell one of the best pieces of media of all time. and you're very much still reeling from haruhi's strange backwards-feeling character development. the movie being much more focused on kyon and nagato helps with that, but in the back of your mind you might still be thinking "damn wtf was haruhi's deal in sigh". the chrono order gives you plenty of time to get over that with some chill episodes, and someday in the rain flows very nicely into disappearance. but the pacing of the chrono order is just really poor no matter how you slice it, and this minor caveat is not enough to dissuade me from sticking with broadcast order in the future. just something i feel like a lot of people miss with broadcast order.
regarding fate/zero, it is probably the best fate anime. i highly recommend you stick with it, it has some really top notch character writing and is brilliantly directed. i would be one of those "read the motherflipping vn" people for what to do after that, but i get it can be tough to make a commitment to a 60+ hour VN lol, so no harm no foul if you just decide to watch ufotable's adaptation of it instead.

Okay I haven't watched the video yet but who's out here getting confused about the One Piece watch/read order. Also tbh I find that most "Complex" watch orders over exaggerated and you can usually just experience a series in release order or timeline order or however you want.

A RUclipsr I love, is giant Kingdom Hearts fan and to the question "Where do I start" is always "Wherever you want"
He himself started with the GBA game because a friend borrowed it to him and then jumped into KH2.
And if you really want to play in an order, buy the collection (there's literally one with all the games in it at that point) and play it from left to right. They just gave you an order.
All the stuff about the mobile game and stuff... I didn't play the mobile game and still I get the important things about the story.

@@Totaraum I mean the timelime can be a bit weird (mostly if you count the mobile game), but just like any kind of long running storyline, piecing it together as you go is kinda part of the experience.
I mean that's what all gamers had to do, just play the new game that came out no matter where it was placed in the timelime.
You find out where it's placed by playing the games I guess
Also yea, if you count the damn mobile game it's crazy, but the main storyline is pretty straight forward.

  • @MalaysianGov

Love the term "experience order" as many franchises utilize multiple forms of media for their storytelling.
I'm also a big supporter of media with non-chronological storytelling. So many stories are chronological that it is sort of the default or assumed standard for telling stories. Not unreasonably so either as things usually make more sense in that order and human experience is also kind of inescapably a chronological experience. BUT! It's really cool when storytelling can subvert or distort that narrative expectation. I think Totaraum is absolutely right with the Pulp Fiction example - a simple, even mundane, story can be captivating if told with a thoughtful use of non-linear storytelling. I think the risk is always "Does this make the story incomprehensible?" but so long as a skilled writer doesn't overshoot that balance, I think many stories can be better and more interesting for it.

The wild thing about Fate is that there's no reason to even get worked up over watch order. A bunch of purists just got bent out of shape because the original Deen anime added a few elements to make the story work. Release order gives you all the information you need to understand the setting, at a good pace, without any unnecessary complications. You just go in release order until you get tired of it, because pretty much all the core stuff got adapted first anyway and everything after is spinoffs you can safely ignore.
Zero is also fine though, some viewers just get turned off by the front-loaded exposition. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far, it was my favorite adaptation until the recent Heaven's Feel movies dethroned it.

"Kaginado is a 10 out of 10 in my book" = Jun Maeda brainrot diagnosis :P
I think one thing that could have helped this though is that, when you talk about "Fate/Zero," you didn't seem to try the first 1-2 episodes of the other canonical "Fate" installments and incorporate that into the discussion. I don't think it was unintended, but it seems like you made your conclusion rather quickly about "Fate." I'm not saying that getting into the franchise via "Zero" is a bad idea, but rather that it might have given you the chance to juxtapose how each lays out the exposition surrounding the characters, the Holy Grail War, etc, and why fans would recommend that particular version of the story.
I'm aware that I'm spending a lot of time in this comment talking about "Fate" (and I'm not even a superfan of it), but considering that it's anime's biggest "HOW TF DO I GET INTO THIS" franchise with maybe one or two exceptions (the CLAMP-verse certainly comes to mind), I suppose I was surprised by how little it took up.
Also, the "Haruhi Watch Order" discussion is always free comedy XD

Following "watch order" lists is a really bad idea and I'm not convinced that it does anything except absolutely hinder your experience. If you used a filler list to get around the One Piece anime, I honestly question how much they really enjoy watching it at all. You want to stop every couple episodes just to make sure the next one is "the necessary one"? Are you watching the show because you enjoy it, or just because you want to get through the story faster? It's a chore at that point. You might as well read a synopsis if all you're getting from the experience is just what happens in the story.
Watch orders don't really help the experience. Have you ever tried to get into Star Wars: The Clone Wars? Fans have a very specific episode order to follow that jumps around entire seasons because they're in chronological order. Not release order or even production order, but chronological. Which is terrible because on top of being a burden to seek for each episode, prequels are usually written with the context that the viewer already knows what's going to come after. So you'll have a character show up without a proper introduction because they were already introduced in a previous episode so the writers don't really take the time to reintroduce them cuz it's already been done! What benefit is there to watch it in this order, especially with a pretty episodic show anyways???
If you have to stop watching a show to check a list to see which episode you're "supposed" to watch next, your experience is being ruined.

Fan made watch orders are generally pretty bad, yeah. I watched clone wars as it aired as a kid and I was totally fine, so I don’t see why a grown adult can’t do the same lol. And agreed, it does tend to take you out of the experience

But I also tell people to skip episode 2 on their first watch of the series and simply go right to episode 3. I dare you to watch episode 2 and tell me I'm wrong to advise that.

Jokes aside great video as always. In regards to Star Wars, I don't get too hung up over it but I would recommend watching the prequels first cos that's how Lucas designed and intended for them to be watched.
