I have a bicuspid heart valve with a heart murmur. For most part I have followed Canada's food guide quite well and believed I ate better than most people eating lower salt and lower fat, eating breakfast starting at 6am with small meals every few hours (about 5-6 meals)as was recommended by trainers the gym. Although I have always exercised /worked out since I was a teen, my endurance was always poor. I got fatigued quickly and my muscles would just give up with lactic acid. My heart would beat so hard I could feel it in my ears . My heart rate would take a long time to come back down all whilst breathing like an obese person. I also had arthritis for most of my adult life and religiously took glucosamine chondroitin supplements daily to ease pain.
In 2017 I fell ill for about a month from faulty dental work which was hard to diagnose . I went through many diagnostic tests ,one of which discovered the source of my heart murmur. It was from having a odd genetic defect (bicuspid) with my heart valve which was beginning to show buildup of calcification. I was given the grim news that in a few years I would most likely need to get the valve replaced with a pig valve or some kind of synthetic. Either of which would require me to be on immune suppression meds for the rest of my life.
2020 rolls in with a pandemic and I feel like a bag I hot garbage . Like most people I started watching more Netflix. I happened upon a documentary called "what's with wheat" . I stopped eating gluten just for fun and wow! I started feeling really good. Shortly after I discovered dr. Erik berg, dr. Jason Fung and dr.Stan Ekberg. I started following some of the their advice and I was amazed at how quickly my health, my body and my mind changed.
For many people these past 2 years were the worst in their lives. For me they have been the best. All because I took a chance and got away from listening to traditional doctors and the false beliefs that they perpetuate.
These RUclips doctors who create these videos have helped so many people for free. Thank you for all you have done!
It's 2022, I'm still rocking the same shitty heart valve with a resting heart rate under 60 bpm and my arthritis is gone. I could go on for hours but it's suppertime and it's my one and only meal for the day..
..can someone please pass me the salt?

This makes so much sense. Been on a high salt diet as long as I can remember and still don’t have high blood pressure (I’m mid 40s). I’ve always been yelled at to lower my salt intake (by parents, doctors, other family members) but I just love my salt too much 🥰. In recent years I started to try lowering my salt intake because I was getting scared about maybe getting high blood pressure if I don’t cut back, but now looks like I don’t have to.

Dr. David Brownstein found that putting his patients (who'd been taken off salt by other doctors) on UNREFINED salt, their BP declined & they were healthier. But he makes it clear that it cannot be regular chemically-stripped table salt, it must be unrefined salt like Himalayan Salt, Real Salt, Celtic Sea Salt -- minerals intact! In fact, he wrote a book on it called Salt Your Way To Health!

One thing that's so difficult with nutrition and health outcomes/mortality studies is that there are so many variables to consider besides dietary intake, which Dr. Fung touched upon here. But knowing the importance of quality salt for health, which is supported by thousands of years of written historical data, and a WHOLE food diet, maybe what we need is just a health dose of common sense more than studies. Thanks Dr. Fung for your grounded wisdom.

Nutrition is not a rigorous science, that’s why is seen with disdain by us in the exact sciences. The majority of medical/nutritional publications have serious problems with statistical analysis and methodology.

    • @Kyarrix
      @Kyarrix 2 года назад +14

@@di3486 If you regard nutrition with disdain and refer to yourself as "us in the exact sciences", the problem is with you, not with Dr Fung or anyone who does research in this area.
You gave it away with the word disdain. Your disdain unfortunately comes from a place of ego and ignorance. The other sciences that you regard as exact, aren't. Your idea that any one science or area of knowledge is inherently more valuable is wrong. Nutrition is an extremely valuable and exacting area of study. It's also very important because our lives and health rely upon it.
The problem we have is inaccurate information promulgated by entities with vested interests. You might be interested in learning about the history of how we got the nutrition pyramid we have, what Ancel Keys did in the 50s with the seven countries study.
The point I'm trying to make is that nutrition is indeed a rigorous area of study and that holding disdain for any discipline based on the erroneous belief that one's own discipline is more worthwhile is both hubris and a mistake.

All my mother's life she was told she needed to reduce her salt intake as she was told she had hypertension. She went on blood pressure meds, along with all the meds to counteract the side effects of said blood pressure meds: diuretics, etc. She ended up with type II diabetes and went on meds for that. Over the decades she was always thirsty, carried water around with her wherever she went. Fatigue also plagued her. In the last decade of her life, she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and congestive heart failure. She died at the age of 74. All because she kept her salt very, very low and ate carbs like crazy. Her own mother, on the other hand, added salt liberally and ate a far more traditional diet, and was never on any medications. She died of natural cause at the age of 92. Go figure 🤷‍♀

One of the confounding factors might be that people who deprive themselves of salt could be satisfying that craving with sugar.

    • @cosmichealth3907
      @cosmichealth3907 2 года назад +2

Yes...low salt diet is compensated by sugar...which in turn causes high bp and low magnesium..this causes stress and anxiety leading to heart issues..another factor could be low salt itself causing heart issues

My cardiologist told me to not eat salt and also said my veins were old and could not carry water away from my legs. He asked me to keep my water consumption very low to cure my swollen feet. Also, he gave me a diuretic . I have diabetes. I found living like that very hard and unpleasant. The best thing that has happened is fasting. I don't have swollen legs anymore. I enjoy all the water I want, and I have lost 14 pounds in my first 31 days. I am off totally my minimum daily 65+ units of insulin. I stopped trulicity and all the painful side effects of that drug. I still take jardiance daily but not for long! I have found fasting is a life saving lifestyle! I will never go back to that idiot Cardiologist! I have lost faith in most doctors. I think the best meaning behind high blood pressure: this is a protection againts freezing/cold. Just think about it
    - narrowing of blood vessels increases the speed of circulation causing high blood pressure; faster circulation prevent freezing
    - increasing salt: this is the best way againts freezing
    - insomnia: if you sleep in cold you are going to freeze

    Two points on salt:
    1. Farmers know to put out a "salt lick" for their cattle, sheep, etc. If they don't have this block of salt, they will get all sorts of diseases. This is the cheapest was to keep livestock healthy...give them salt.
    2. God said: "Salt is good." Period. Mark 9:49, Luke 14:34.

FASTING 36+ hours at a time is the quickest way to reduce blood pressure!
Some of the many benefits of fasting and low carb diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weght loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

Intermittently high salt intake will increase the body fluid and hence the blood pressure. Will this "wash" away some of the blockages in the blood vessels by expansion and contraction under the "normal" conditions? How does fasting help in overall blood pressure? Thanks, Dr.

My late father died with no heart problems after decades on a low salt diet, depriving himself of delicious food for nothing. I’ve been a type 1 diabetic since 1970, and still have more insulin resistance than I’d like despite over a year on a near-carnivore diet. I will eat as much salt as I find palatable.
The utter terror of dietary salt among some creators of videos here on RUclips is striking. Some people actually feel ill after eating salty food: they’re convinced it’s toxic, and make it clear that anyone eating lots of salt is no better than suicidal. Deep faith there.

There are a few things as delicious as avocado drizzled with a little fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of salt. Or a steak. Or both. I can't do the carnivore diet, I find myself craving fresh food. Blackberries, avocado, tomatoes and spinach sauteed in a little butter with my eggs, the very occasional sumo orange. Very occasional because there's a lot of sugar in them.
I'm not criticizing your diet, I know it can work for people. We're all different. The one thing we have in common, we all need to avoid processed food, added sugar and so-called heart healthy vegetable oils that aren't healthy.
I hope the carnivore diet is working well for you. You're right about the over the top reactions to salt. I also use the amount of salt that is palatable to me. Good health!
