@@KevinSchunn You might have a point! The college I went to required stick before tig and I learned some welding on my own first with acetylene, then stick, flux core, and then tig. Learning tig first will teach a person patience and cleanliness and prep. That will translate to the faster processes where it is harder to move at a slow pace to really watch what is going on. After 20 years of welding, I never use stick and hate flux core but must use it sometimes. Tig is my first choice for many jobs, but some are better suited for mig or spoolgun mig. It all depends on what type of work you do and where you do it.

@@KevinSchunn oh for sure I appreciate your knowledge. Let me state I’m not wanting to become a pro welder, I love woodworking and would love to be able to add metal working to my projects or building things around the shop. Being able to weld some basic mild steel or aluminum, do you think TIG is the best for this or would you go with a different setup? Thanks for the replies

same XD. ive been a welder for a fabrication shop here in sweden for almost 3 years. we make everything from fueltanks to steel girders for buildings. but when i started i got asked what i do for a living at a family reunion. i told them i was a welder and emediately got asked to help weld on an A-traktor(basically a car that is rebuilt to only go about 30 kmh and can therefor be legally driven by someone with a moped licence at 15). i was like, ill have to think about it. but internally thinking o god no i have my own projects i really dont want to XD.

Actually where I live in my city welding is a prohibited home business. Now he might work around this if welding goes into his artwork and only that artwork generated income you can have an art studio. But if welding for a customer or even possibly his online program might run into the issue as that business needs a permit.

Might also get busted for storing pressurized containers improperly, or not having the appropriate fire safety equipment on-hand. Usually it's not the welding they just you for but the details.
Also no one, NO ONE wants to get a visit from the fire marshal for law enforcement purposes...
