    You give a very good pitch for this series ! I completely agree with the dislike for the 'techtalk' but being very impressed with Liu's treatment of political and cultural themes. Those parts are so good ! Even with all the issues I think Speaking Bones had, I still am glad we choose to read these books. It's a impressive series and I'm already looking forward to re-reading the books ( well some in any case)

    Definitely want to get into Ken Liu next year, probably starting with the Paper Menagerie. I’m glad you said the engineering stuff didn’t detract from your enjoyment too much even if wasn’t your favorite bit of it, that’s one thing that has made me a bit wary about reading the series.

    yeah, I think I feel very similar to you on it (having only read two book so far though) - the cultural/political evolution of the kingdom has been absolutely stunning, it's just it gets bogged down in other modes at times. First book is definitely my favorite thus far, and I'm betting it'll stay that way... but I'm definitely excited to continue.
    +1 on 'All the Flavours' too, very much found it akin to Grace of Kings when I read it. Great advice.

      yeah, my faves are (from what I gather) the fans least faves? I liked Grace of Kings and Veiled Throne best because they were the most character-centric and political, the other two have far more engineering

    I didn't want to start a new series, but from your description, this sounds exactly like something I need to read! I am just now going through Fire and Blood for the second time and I started wondering where I could find something similar.

      @LienesLibrary  2 года назад

      it's definitely not a one-to-one with Fire and Blood but I think anyone who has the patience to read and enjoy something as meaty and dense as Fire and Blood would be well suited to a meaty and dense series like this one

    Excellent video!! I adore this series, but I agree that it really isn't for everyone. I was actually quite surprised by how much I loved it, because the engineering and war/battle scenes should have bored the heck out of me, but somehow I could tolerate them so well here, haha.
    The whole anthropological aspect is what kept me glued to the page as well. And the writing... just *chef's kiss* 🤌
    Hope your video convinces some more people to pick this up, because it deserves way more love and hype!!

    Great review, I heard this was a great book, but having listened to a 5 minute preview, your review confirmed that I'm unlikely to enjoy it. The anthropological side does interest me, but I prefer a more personal perspective. Ursula Le Guin has the right tone for me in this department. Anyone writing like that?

    • @LienesLibrary
      @LienesLibrary  Год назад

      grimdark I feel like is a matter on the overall message/perspective ofered by the book - grimdark, to me, is cynical, nihilistic, hopeless, etc. whereas non-grimdark books, even if they have dark content or subject matter, still have more hopeful, optimistic, etc. themes or messages

    I just can't with the title of the book... 🤣 Sorry for the off-topic no need to know info here, but the title just translates so poorly into Icelandic (my language). If I directly translate it, it's going to sound like "the idiot kingdom" and let's face it, I directly translated it in my head as soon as I read the title of your video so I would always, always when reading the book... 😂 It sounds interesting though. The plot, that is. ☺

    I loved this book BUT it is not an easy book to read. To me this is like 8% fantasy and the 92% Historical fiction. Many of what is talked about in the book happened in history with the names and places changed. The thing I found the hardest to get through was not the machines talked about but the long winded chapters on military and war strategy. To me it's the reason I wanted to DNF it. Doing the audiobook for this section helped but still made it hard for me. But I felt it was a worthwhile read and topic to push through. Where Ken shines though in is his character building- as through that Ken packs with book with wisdom and lessons. These books are DENSE and very rarely let up which can also be hard at times. It shows the reality of what so many suffered at the hands of man who craved nothing more than their own glory and power- and then generations who came after simply following suite doing the same. Add to that the book writes that the gods are just as flawed if not more so than man. It has an oppressive sad feel at times and you will need to take breaks. But I feel every leader or person in power should be required to read this series at least once! As hard as this book was at times the lessons and wisdom Ken packed into this series will stay with me for life. It also requires you to have to face the harsh reality that many people lived and LIVE through still today. You cant turn the channel. The lessons and asking you to think deeply also never lets up. Again you probably will find yourself getting fatigued, if it helps take a break and read a lighter book while reading this series. Ken also requires you to look fairly even at men/woman who have done wrong- that often times maybe they started with good intent but power unchecked changed them overtime. He also does now allow you to put the "heroes" on a pedestal. He shows that even those who choose to do good- are. flawed, make mistakes, need counsel, and to remain teachable and humble. Id say go into this like historical fiction, if you get fatigued take a break its worth getting through and not DNFing, use. audio format for the harder parts, journal and think deeply on the lessons given. This is not an easy book and in opinion is not really fantasy, but it's a worthwhile book nonetheless. If you have read the poppy wars it's in the same vein but it does a far better job in my opinion executing the themes.

    I dnf'd it at 50%
    reads like a history textbook and somebody needs to tell the author that women exist. For 30 introduced (and murdered right after a 5-6 page long backstory) characters in the 1st half of the grace of kings alone, there were only 2 women: 1 spends half the time picking herbs and the rest giving birth to and raising children while patiently waiting for her Big Brave Man to come back from war and the 2nd one is a pretty princess who wants to dedicate her life to academic pursuits, but then her goddess tells her to abandon her ambitions and to just weaponize her beauty instead. constant mentions of prostitutes and selling women to whorehouses. lmao honestly fuck this.
    ALSO you would think that in a world where women seemingly don't exist, there'd be more gays, right? lol as if
    no matter how well crafted the world is, I just can't get through it

    Warning - spoilers - I listened to Grace of Kings just recently and I feel a bit disappointed. I enjoyed the first 2/3 or so - but the final conflicts in the last 1/3 or so - just got BORING 🥱- I forced myself to listen to the entire book but I feel like the last 1/3 or so was a waste of my time and obviously concluded as expected. The airships were interesting as were the whales and the birds. The misunderstandings between the “brothers” were nonsense. The tragic flaws in Mata were juvenile. The other “brother” had an arc of personality change which didn’t make sense, at least Mata was consistent! The end was full on cliche. Yuk. Why is this so highly rated?
