What's wrong with people criticizing the looks? That doesn't mean the same people won't play it. You don't have to blindly praise something just to show you like it.
wish they would somehow replicate the old cinematic's style, with weird stuttering and rendering that gave it a unintentionally creepier mood, instead of just making it "prettier". I think this game gains something with some "uglyness". But that's just a nitpick, other then that the remake is fantastic and the in-game stuff acutally looks darker, better colors and contrast compared to the more plain original.
To be fair, I agree that the stuttering made it look better. I liked that in the OG, whether it was intentional or not, Zarok had a proper limp going on to his right-hand side; something missing in the remake.
I agree, in the feel that castles with symmetrical stones are far less wretched than castles with convoluted stones. The cheerfulness is quite a contrast to the time in history when Tim Burton took centerstage with his interpretation of droll insusiance. This remake has an unrequited candor all its own as if it took the football and took off in the wrong direction. Youd think all new levels would have dusted this game off, instead this new dazzling CGI programmer made it into a Phantom Menace, we are going to need a sequel to validate a new hope for Sir Dan again
Too many people complaining about nothing, just be grateful that they remade it, the Ps1 version is still out there if you want to go play that. personally I think the updated version looks awesome. Super excited for it.
Same here man. Asshats love to make people feel bad because they like something they don't like. I love the original and I'm looking forward to playing this remake.
There just something about the character design, animation and cutscenes of the original PS1 version that makes it superior to the remake. The only thing better in the remake are the designs of the talking gargoyle heads.
The problem with the remake's cutscenes is that they are made with the ingame engine, all the locations and characters should remain consistent. The original shot of the town presents us with crooked and warped streets and houses something that only works from that perspective you cannot translate that into a 3D and playable environment. As they used again the engine for every shot they are limited in the effects they can use, that's why that shot of the town from the cliff looks like a random WoW village rather than an eery secluded village. One more thing that this remake does wrong is abusing the engine particle effects, instead of a real sorcerer casting a spooky spell the big baddy resembles every spell caster from an MMO or MOBA using a spell that can be spammed all day long. In addition to all the limits of using the ingame engine, I must say that the character and location design is plain bad, the source material is just awesome and they were making a remake, so there is no excuse to what they did. The main villain looks like a discount version of a Disney villain, they possessed villagers are not even.... and the worst offender is the hole in the wall, the original looks like a face which is neat, the remake one is just a plain hole boooring. About the bit of gameplay shown, in the original all that you couldn't see was pitch black, making you feel uncomfortable and think of all the things that were waiting outside that black void, again in the remake they just throw that feeling out the window
The Ps1 fmv intro still looks better than the real time Ps4 one for me, better coloured and absurdly better specular mapped. Ps1 Zarok looked soulless as he was supposed to be. On Ps1 his face is correctly shaded in the penumbra and there are correct shadows on the book which instead look pretty much random on Ps4 where there's too much brightness with just a little candle lit in a cave lair underground built into a waterfall. Even if mid '90s games fmv cinematics (in general) look kinda "clayish" (though I was really impressed by many of them, back in the day) for nowadays standards they sometime still work somehow better and paradoxically turn out to be more realistic and genuine...
I think some of the color pallete and graphical limitations of the original actually made it look better. Sure a lot of places were evenly lit, but certain set pieces and details used very deliberate lighting. The remake is detailed but it's like....they made *everything* too detailed so the final image is not as easy to digest, visually...like the eye is drawn in too many directions at once. The torch lighting in the original was stark and actually looked like torchlight against dark, and gave spaces/architecture more definition. More impact. The remake graveyard just has this "purple" look and oversaturated draw distance, with distant details in like sprites or particles, clouds, etc way too textured Like with some of the Spyro reignited lighting/skybox quirks, the developers lack an understanding that sometimes "Less is More" And the intro cinematic...doesn't even compare, man.
It's ok to be nostalgic, I also prefer the original work because I grew up with them, but the idea behind remastering is to use the current technologies to produce a detailed and finished version of a given game. They also need to target a big audience and make big sell to pay the production cost and make a plus value. Just like back in the days these were the best graphical game you could hope for.
The only that I hate on the remake is how zarok looks, looks almost like a clown while in the original looks like a demon; and the zombies are not as terrifying as the original. :/
so from what im seeing, the remake looks WAY too colorful and not dark enough and kiddish while the original had the scary vibe with better cinematics wtf?
dont see better cinematics, although we're talking about a comparison of an CGI Render sequence with a sequence in ingame-engine. but its surely too colorfull, which is a "new-age" sickness you can see in almost every second game or so. The topic with the same debate started with diablo 3 if not even sooner. models and design is a question of taste, i kinda like it but i didnt play the original, only the ps1-demo. but yeah, the original had this "ghost n gouls"-vibe with darkened backgrounds, which was likely more a hardware-restriction then a decision of design. as a developer you need some guts and talent to create a dark world like bloodborne or diablo 1 for example.
I think I will provide my own opinion. Never even hearing of this game until now. The ps1 game was obviously limited by its tech. However it still holds up today. Giving us a dark atmosphere that I would love to play sometime. The Ps4 looks great with the new tech giving us better poly models, however everything has become so colorful. Kinda reminding me of the spyro remake while the ps1 reminds me of the old dark games of that time. Almost like if they made a nightmare before Christmas game. In fact it kinda reminds me of kh358 Halloween town to be more specific.
The PSX Version is still my favorite, i bought both Medievil 1+2 original over ebay , and also have the ps4 version, because this remake is also awesome ! xD Don't get me wrong i LOVE to play the remake, but the nostalgic childish kick what i get from the original is unbelievable :D sorry for bad english i hope you get what i want to say, iam from germany xD
Still love this new version, especially after playing the demo but i got to say i really do miss the old school noises like when you open tutorial books or fill up your health vials :(
I never got to the play the original, and personally I love the look of the new one. For those saying Zarok looked darker in the original, a lot of that just has to do with the ps1 could render lol.
No, it's to do with actual character design. Colour and lighting aside, in the original he had unnatural markings or wrinkles across his face, indicating great levels of deterioration, age or scarring. The facial 'horns' were also small and subtle, protruding directly out of his skin from his cheekbones, indicating an unintentional 'growth' of sorts, perhaps a magical backlash; whereas the remake has very intentional, pointy spikes with clear exit holes, quite like a typical cartoon villain. The eyes in the original were always wide open, with no eyebrows, making him appear emotionless and psychopathic. The latter has big, bushy brows and overtly expressive eye movements. Whether intentional or not, the original moved in a choppy way, with a clear limp, whereas the latter is very smooth and almost waves his hips. All of this distances the original from looking or behaving like a human; whereas the latter feels much more like they took Zarok's original design and attempt at integrating it with Jafar or something.
I used to have the playstation CD-ROM demo of this game back in the days. These games were so fun and advanced I could play and complete the demo over and over without getting bored. Nowadays it's all about the Coolidge effect, buying another game even though you didn't even finish the previous one.
4:01. 6:44 Ohh..that's what's off. Not that the remake looks bad,it doesn't,but the OG version has a blackness looming around at all times. It's why the game's atmosphere is literally dark at times. You're always pressing forward past the darkness, never sure what's coming up next. Now you can see quite far into the distance, the remake has an actual sky & illuminated atmosphere/background and it makes everything brighter. Originally that was probably done due to hardware limitations, but wish they tried to make it work. It really seems to have played on the games tone/feel. It's always why some levels actually scared me a little when I young.
looks good. my only change would be to dim the lighting a bit , looks like a sylanders dlc level, and add a bit of a deep purple/blue mix to the environmental lighting
They both have strong points. The OG has the creepy atmosphere, nostalgic PS1 UI (like those loading screens and the health bar), and points for being the original. The new one looks so goddamn beautiful and like the gameplay is smoother. Both exist and are their own thing. I feel like the new one will have more replay value for me (once I get it) with how immersive and high fidelity it is.
En lo personal está mejor el de ps1 Los gráficos causan cierta horror, aunque el de PS4 está más rápido. Pero vamos para esa época ya estaba bastante bien.
Despite it looking a little less like raw Tim Burton, and more like Tim Burton mixed with Disney influence (toned down, colourful, cartoonish), I must say that I like what they've done with the remake; but the PS1 original will always be superior in my eyes. Not just for nostalgia-sake, but I feel the artwork, lighting and atmosphere felt so gritty, dark and mysterious - an element that was aided by the clever use of the limited technology of the PS1 (compared to the PS4). But being fair, with how clean-cut and pristine graphics and textures are today, I think it would be impossible to mimic that same vague sense of fairytale-esque fogginess - something that required you to fill in the 'blanks' with your imagination - without making the game look lacking, incomplete or otherwise messy.
Cinematics have a darker tone and atmosphere in the ps1 original version, still like the ps 4 version they made a great job! But man the original was my childhood, so many good memories playing that game as a 10 year old child ♥️ also i remember the cinematics scared the hell out of me
I played the original game when I was a kid, also played the psp remake and now I have played the ps4 one. Of course the original gives me more nostalgia but that doesn't mean that this remake is not awesome because it is. I felt that the studio wanted to appeal to the fans and in my case they dit it. Also I'm from Spain and I love the fact that the dubbing is still the same as it was in the original, the heroe's gallery is freaking hilarious. (Edit) And also the little gift that they made us by allowing you to play the original game in the ps4 if you release all the souls it's amazing.
Yeah, people love to pretend MediEvil was some dark and gritty Dark Souls-like game. Even though the artistic inspiration of the game came from Ghosts ans Goblins and Nightmare Before Christmas, and was targrted for an audience of most ages despite it's T rating. The game was always bright, and always cartoon themed, otherwise Dan wouldn't have looked the way he does, and he wouldn't have a cartoonistic purple worm living in his head. Yeah the cinematic back then were dark and kind of bleak looking, but that isnt what they we're going for. It was more so about limitations. Just looking at the concept art and the new Comic book (which is drawn by the original artist) will clearly show that the game has always had a cartoon style to it.
@@FlowerKnight2 the art style came from 1920s German expressionistic film, which also inspired Tim Burton, but is nowadays usually credited solely to Burton
The reason everyone is calling the new one bad is because they dont want to let go the previous one, and thats completely fine, i also find the old one a bit better but im sure it will set in pretty soon as the new one is MUCH better.
The original was definitely more eerie with its sparse lighting and portraying Zarok as a more serious and intimidating villian. However, I still think the remake did a good job being faithful to the original

wish they would somehow replicate the old cinematic's style, with weird stuttering and rendering that gave it a unintentionally creepier mood, instead of just making it "prettier". I think this game gains something with some "uglyness". But that's just a nitpick, other then that the remake is fantastic and the in-game stuff acutally looks darker, better colors and contrast compared to the more plain original.
It's called NOSTALGIA buddy, we miss the ''uglyness'', that's why...
Raizazel Well said. Thank you.
Totally agree
@@Raizazel To be honest both versions look like they are from Disney movie. Still a great game though!
Look at the size of the village in ps1 compared to ps4. Ps1 looks bigger and when Zarok is casting the spell that moon is just amazing.
Better graphics, but lost the soul, personality, atmosphere, charm, and character of everything
Exactly
Nah.
@lady bird yeah, I found that out when I watched the completionists review. That's pretty cool.
It's brilliant, love it! The good old childhood. One of the best remakes I've ever seen. Lovely!
As child I was very afraid of stained glass windows after playing this game
The ps1 version look like more Dark and scare than the ps4 version.
Scenes and character design is superior in old version.
The remake graveyard just has this "purple" look and oversaturated draw distance, with distant details in like sprites or particles, clouds, etc way too textured
Like with some of the Spyro reignited lighting/skybox quirks, the developers lack an understanding that sometimes "Less is More"
And the intro cinematic...doesn't even compare, man.
He always looked like a clown.
I hate the walking the most.
so from what im seeing, the remake looks WAY too colorful and not dark enough and kiddish while the original had the scary vibe with better cinematics wtf?
The original was scary???? Better cinematics????? No, this is not what I'm seeing
dont see better cinematics, although we're talking about a comparison of an CGI Render sequence with a sequence in ingame-engine. but its surely too colorfull, which is a "new-age" sickness you can see in almost every second game or so.
Blablabla ppl complaining about differences... who cares... it’s freaking medievil!! U can play the ps1 version as a secret thing in the game
JESUS. That first flash at 0:52 gave me a heart attack!
Haha it was kind of scary
I think I will provide my own opinion. Never even hearing of this game until now.
The ps1 game was obviously limited by its tech. However it still holds up today. Giving us a dark atmosphere that I would love to play sometime. The Ps4 looks great with the new tech giving us better poly models, however everything has become so colorful. Kinda reminding me of the spyro remake while the ps1 reminds me of the old dark games of that time. Almost like if they made a nightmare before Christmas game. In fact it kinda reminds me of kh358 Halloween town to be more specific.
i used to watch a older friend play this as a kid and it scared me so much... the ps1 graphics are terrifying
The PSX Version is still my favorite, i bought both Medievil 1+2 original over ebay , and also have the ps4 version, because this remake is also awesome ! xD Don't get me wrong i LOVE to play the remake, but the nostalgic childish kick what i get from the original is unbelievable :D
sorry for bad english i hope you get what i want to say, iam from germany xD
Still love this new version, especially after playing the demo but i got to say i really do miss the old school noises like when you open tutorial books or fill up your health vials :(
Couldn't agree more, love the remake so much. But I really missed the sounds of the zombies when you hit them with the sword haha
I mean i just Buy the next game just to save me some time to buy it later (but i prefer waiting to see the people's opinion
This looks absolutely amazing of the upcoming remake of midevil I cannot wait to play this bad boy for the first time
Shit!! I remember playing the demo on ps1! Good times back then
Mr.Wayne jam pack 🔥🔥
I love this game!
I used to play this amazing game 23 years ago, when I was single. I play whit my sons by now.
Does every animator have to rip off Disney? They completely missed the boat on this.
Well.. PS1 version will always stay close to my heart and I find it to be 10x more scary/spooky thanks to the old graphics..
4:01. 6:44
Ohh..that's what's off.
Can’t wait to play it again!!!! All time favorite game! I had so much fun playing it when I was younger brings back some good memories
Am I the only one who prefers PS1 version?
Did you forget tje GAMEPLAY??
@@DanielMartinezz6 gameplay is the same in te remake
yes you and the other hundred people who says the same.
@@Jisim33 i am just into old quality games idk why
The original was better. People who prefer the remake speak todays lingo, they couldnt be the bravest of my captains or noblest of my courtiers
looks good. my only change would be to dim the lighting a bit , looks like a sylanders dlc level, and add a bit of a deep purple/blue mix to the environmental lighting
ingame looks fantastic though.
@@dirtpeanut1820 how much do you think this will be to buy in the US and the UK
Honestly... I think the PS1 CGI looks better in terms of how much is going on. The Remake cut Sir Daniel's demise sadly.
No, the fortesque dead is in the game.
Haven’t played em myself, but both look great in their own ways!
From haunted house to disco
The original is way better, i can't believe this remake. .
En lo personal está mejor el de ps1
Los gráficos causan cierta horror, aunque el de PS4 está más rápido. Pero vamos para esa época ya estaba bastante bien.
Great video. Gave me goosebumps
Why have modern remakes always be so more colorful?
More like they dont know how to apply the atmosphere that the original could do. Which sucks
@@kejiri3593 Indeed.
i'm quite surprised at how good the cutscene videos were on the ps1...
looking forward to playing this again
Very good work for one of the best video games ever !Glory tribute to Sir Daniel Fortesque!
Love the darkness to the og game I feel they have mad stuff look alot less creepy
It seems like they didn't fully learn the lesson from Resurrection. Well, they say third time's the charm. Maybe in another 20 years. 🤔
What lesdon?
Wow! This sound brings back memories 🙂
Older Zarok looks scary af
But man the original was my childhood, so many good memories playing that game as a 10 year old child ♥️ also i remember the cinematics scared the hell out of me
The could have just make the whole game look like ps1 cinematic cutscenes with animations. They always ruin the remakes like that. :(
Guess I'm the only one that thinks the original always looked just as goofy and cartoonish as the remake. I think they both look great.
Can’t wait to play this I’m probably going to get it for my B-day
There's some games that you can't remake the grittiness of the original, this is one of them.
Hello there
Looks more scary in ps1, love it😂🖤
I grew up playing this game... Wow... Time flies
I played original one. Loved it. Gonna get the remake for sure
I still rather play the classic version.
If they've kept the old audio mostly unchanged that's great news imo, I'd play the shit out of this nostalgia trip
Lol, really, there are people who complain that the new one looks cartoon when it always has been?
Apparently they think its a horror game
The key difference here: Atmosphere.
@@naturesquad9174 exactly. The new one has nothing of that. People are just ignorant.
How is it that the PS1 version looks much much better to me?
Because its way creepier. Whereas remake looks like a disney cartoon
The original is much creepier, the remake leans a bit too much on the cartoony effect!
The reason everyone is calling the new one bad is because they dont want to let go the previous one, and thats completely fine, i also find the old one a bit better but im sure it will set in pretty soon as the new one is MUCH better.
Greg rulz ok?
The original was definitely more eerie with its sparse lighting and portraying Zarok as a more serious and intimidating villian. However, I still think the remake did a good job being faithful to the original
Those skulls on the walls sound EXACTLY like they did before! 😱
I skipped school to master this game, so glad they remastered it. Now ill be able to remind my dad of how much i wasn't dedicated to education but didnt turn out to bad despite the fact
By cutting his death the context is lost and feels non sequitur, something essential to Sir Fortesque's character
This is only on the video, they show it on the game
That’s dope that they brought it back but nothing will ever beat the classic just something about the original will always remain spooky
The remake is best
