Sleep Token are prefectly bridging the gap between pop and metal. I have a good friend who has never been a fan of metal until he heard Alkaline last year, and now he's more than happy to bump some Meshuggah in the car with me. Perfect gateway band, on top of being an amazing band in general.
Been a fan for years now. It's about time they get the recognition they deserve. BTW the riff at the 3 min mark of their song "Say that you will" is one of the best breakdown sleep token riffs ever that no-one seems to know about. Great video and Carcosa rules!
The synth in 'Jaws' is so disgustingly good. I won't lie it took me a few listens for Sleep Token to grow on me, but boy did they ever. 'The Summoning' is easily the best song they've made to date, and if they can capitalize on that sound for an entire album, it will be something special. Also, I love how 'Gods' sounds like a combination of both 'Goon Squad' and 'When Girls Telephone Boys' by Deftones.
Sleep Token wasn't for me, until I read someone's comment about listening to a song twice is how you start truly appreciating songs. Sleep Token is for me
The breakdowns in Thread the Needle are some of the most crushingly heavy things I’ve heard in my life and the first one comes out of nowhere. Probably my favorite breakdown ever, shame it wasn’t on here but otherwise a great list.
HOW COULD YOU FORGET THE HIGHER ENDING BREAKDOWN DAWG?! Still this is such a sick video and I love that you incorporated the tunings as well. I’m gonna try and learn some of these now 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
So glad to see these guys really starting to blow up. Been my favorite band for a while and after their US tour, they've really gained a huge swath of new followers, and I'm so excited for their future!
Guys, if you check the recent video on the jackson channel, the tech of Sleep Token said the tuning of the multiscale 8 string is EAEADGBE (10-84). I guess they pitch shift down depending on the songs. One semitone lower and bam you have your D#. I don't remember the song title but I played one in Drop E with my Drop set to 3 semitones down = Drop C# (in my case).
Hell yeah! My favorite band of all time! I am glad they are getting the attention they deserve, but I'm a little disappointed that they aren't my little secret anymore lol. Excellent job on the riffage andrew!
For me, still...it's the outro to When The Bough Breaks. If you have the original mix of the song, there's just some powerful magic going on there even more so. Anyway, this video proves why we all watch you so much Andrew...the look on your face/sound of your voice when you talk about the lads is unmistakably just someone who stays on the pulse of what we metal guitar nuts are/have been truly listening to. Ten more songs to go, so we'll be awaiting your thoughts and/or breakdowns (pun intended) for the full album.
This year is sleep tokens year! About time they got the credit they absolutely deserve! Gonna be a big year for these boys! Huge shout out to you tho big dawg for the guitar playthrough 💯✅
They were my best discovery of last year along with Spiritbox. Been binging all the metal content creators reactions to Chokehold/The Summoning so glad to you putting out content too. I want to see them tour. They are so good. I had no clue they were opening for Polyphia before. Regret not going.
It’s possible but I don’t really know. They’re a pretty mysterious band and I know at some point they’ve used 8 strings and now use baritone 6 strings… other than that I just had to figure it out haha
What I want to know is: how does Sleep Token play such ungodly low riffs on some of their songs? I'm talking things like Granite, Ascensionism, and Take Me Back To Eden. I'm pretty sure IV plays an 8-string, so like, are they just down-tuning things super far? Are they secretly using a 9-string on the recordings? Are they using a pitch-shifter? What am I missing here?
I mean, Vessel does everything besides drums in the studio, so if you really wanted to know, he’d know 😭 off topic, but it kinda baffles me how many people don’t know that III and IV are only paid tourists and not actually members of the band, at least they used to be. Idk about now 🤷♂️
I'm just going to assume the outro for "Higher" transcends space and time and was only left out because of it inability to be quantified into human sound without the proper gifts like some eldritch beings name.
Good stuff Andrew. You have quite a few of the songs in F standard however when I look at the tabs all over the place a lot of them are listed in drop D# ( which leaves strings 1-6 on an 8 string in standard tuning and down a half step ) I am a wee bit confused. I am looking to get an 8 string for songs just like this and cant decide between a multi scale 8 and a standard 8 in 28" scale. I thought their tuning of late was drop D# (. E1 B1 E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 ). down a half step via normal tuning or a pitch shifter. I am not aware of a way to use a pitch shifter on this tuning aside from taking drop E down a half step. What am i missing ?

Bridging a gap that never needed to be bridged. Pop music can suck a bag of d**ks.

I saw them monday first time live on a architects concert, they sound live fooking awesome and he actually kind of growled there. love it.

I love your taste can u tell me some more hidden gems
Gods does not get enough love. Such a banger
Nice job on the drums! Vessel II is a fucking beast and you can tell you paid some attention to the tracks when constructing the backing tracks!
By far the hardest part of the video
The riff at the very end of "love you want" is heavy af and crazy. I noticed how crazy it was when they released instrumental versions
Sleep Token's riffs are so simple yet so powerful. THAT is good songwriting
I'd argue it's great Riff writing, songwriting would include how those riffs are used and in what musical context.
"🤓" Moment over lmao
Man, I could listen to that High Water riff forever
Higher, when the bough breaks, the love that you want, hypnosis…
The breakdowns in Thread the Needle are some of the most crushingly heavy things I’ve heard in my life and the first one comes out of nowhere. Probably my favorite breakdown ever, shame it wasn’t on here but otherwise a great list.

Higher is such a bop, love that song🔥
EARLY ACCESS WORSHIP GANG! 🤘😜
Was hoping to see a vid like this with Sleep Token's killer riffs. Thanks as always Andrew!
Glad you enjoyed thank you!

I found them thanks to a video you did years ago back when Jaws had just come out. Been a fan ever since
Love to hear that
Hell yeah! My favorite band of all time!

Damn...Higher deserved to be on this list :(

What about the breakdown at the end of hypnosis 😢
Oh if you want Vola's heaviest, dont forget 'Your mind is a helpless dreamer'
Album of the year 2021 for me
4:43 that just grooves way too hard, as they always do
Literally pop-thall band
@@such.ukr.nu.metalcore hahahaha I can't even say you're incorrect
I'm on a huge Sleep Token binge, so this just perfect timing, they got some FAT ch0nky riffs!!!
Just listen to this for an hour straight at the gym. This is heavy, love it!
Thread The Needle still has one of the heaviest breakdowns for me. I remember stumbling upon it and thinking "this band is something special".
Can’t believe u didn’t include the riff in Fall For Me even though that song is entirely a capella
It’s about damn time someone recognised high water😂😂
These all flow perfectly together.
High Water has gotta be my favorite
The string wobble of the 9 string in your videos is second to none hahaha. Great filming
Thank you, that's what I needed.
This year is sleep tokens year! About time they got the credit they absolutely deserve! Gonna be a big year for these boys! Huge shout out to you tho big dawg for the guitar playthrough 💯✅
I'm starting to dig into this band, and I can say this video sure didn't hurt my desire to dig in.
NGL with the characters in the visualizers, at first I thought they were doing a collab for an Elden Ring DLC 😂
Seeing them at Download this year is going to insane
They’re playing download ?
WAIT WHAT
They played last year, seeing them next week also, my 8th time now 😂
@@camh4656 same. Brixton?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SLEEP TOKEN VIDEO!
Their F drops are so damn great
absolutely love Sleep Token, new songs are also super badass! Great video, have to go listen to more Sleep Token now 😂
How can they play in F standard and Drop Eb when they dont switch guitars live?
They were my best discovery of last year along with Spiritbox. Been binging all the metal content creators reactions to Chokehold/The Summoning so glad to you putting out content too.
I want to see them tour. They are so good. I had no clue they were opening for Polyphia before. Regret not going.
What a great way to start the year
I could've sworn some of those f standard songs are in drop d#
It’s possible but I don’t really know. They’re a pretty mysterious band and I know at some point they’ve used 8 strings and now use baritone 6 strings… other than that I just had to figure it out haha
the offering's main riff is actually in drop D#, it's just that final riff is in a key of F
They still use an 8 String live. Saw them Last week and he was playing a Jackson Soloist Archtop Slat 8 the whole set
NO HYPNOSIS?!?!?!?!
It was in there and had to be removed cuz of copyright claim. I’ve done a full cover of it though
@@BaenaCarcosa My boy covered it so well it got demonetized...
Cant find how to play Take me back to eden :( kinda puicking by ear
What about darko rifs ?
Half step up or an octave down + half step
It just makes so much sense that Andrew used a six string for F standard
Fields of Elation got an amazing breackdown too
eyyy jumping on the sleep token train!! worship.
Its nice to see another band pop off besides Lorna for a change
Only one I’d say you missed is the end breakdown of Higher
Bro got all of the tunings wrong
Some how missed the existence of Sleep Token....
your cymbals sound really good man what are you using for those
Wait wasn’t the breakdown in “The Summoning” tuned to D#?

I thought the heavy "Loathe" style riff in the Summoning drops down to a D#? Idk, F just sounds a little too high
Good stuff Andrew. Get a multi scale 8 string. Schecter make some really nice ones for a reasonable price.
Dude I need that brand of sacrifice Hoodie! Where did you buy it!?
Only thing missing is the end of higher
No hypnosis breakdown? 😢
You missed Higher! One of the filthiest breakdowns they have :(
God's is such a cool song. Drumming is sick.
gods goes so hard
Andrew, can you do a Lorna Shore tuned down video?
yay
Hey dude! What software do you use for your pitch shifting?
This time around it was Neural DSP archetype petrucci for tones
@@BaenaCarcosa Thanks! Love the video.

Sleep token turned into Vildhjarta on choke hold😂
Idk why, but “the chokehold” sounds like a vildjharta riff.
That guitar is INSANE - is it custom made?
Yeah it’s an Aluminati Orion Baritone
Alkaline had at least one or two pretty heavy ones that you missed
What is that silver guitar???
Aluminati Orion
The breakdown to the summoning just doesn't hit as hard without vessels scream
Is it F standard or drop F??
he's weird for these. sleep token uses Drop D#1 and pitch shifts up or down depending on the song.
No Hypnosis? 🥺
Even though - tasty riffing, thank you
Yes yes yes yes yes
Thread the needle
Damn, really missed the When the Bough Breaks breakdown
Andrew, you're wrong, the songs gods and the offering are played in the original in drop d# tuning
No Thread the Needle tho :O
Bruh.. no 'Gods' opening riff? killing me over here.
G O D S
no hypnosis??
How are you playing Sleep Token on a 6 string!?
Baritone
How did you forget Higher?!
MESHUGAHHHHHH
Aw man what about Hypnosis? :(
Shouldaaaa done hypnosisssssssss
Where Higher
Facts!
No higher :(
Sliptoken
andrew banana
How the fuck you get a 6 string that low? Do I need to buy baritone strings 😂
What is this F standard heresy?
Seems pretty damn easy to play to me. Not much goin on…
how dare you forget higher
