To be fair, his party only ever won some council seats, and never got more than one seat in the house of councillors. Fringe parties only appeal to highly disenfranchised, low information voters. Most people vote for mainstream parties, focused on real problems.
The biggest problem honestly is, that people are not educated in voting...they vote on their current feelings rather than empirical analysis...which leads to populism and rise of demagogues which are usually inclinable to right wing parties thanks to its simplier rhetoric...
@@GrimmaStadguard This exactly. I don't like to make these things a "right vs left" discussion because it usually ends up becoming pointless blabber, but seriously..... It's insane to me how the difference in voting between the left and right usually boils down to "I want laws that will benefit the people I love and the future" vs "I want laws that will make ME feel better and screw everybody else". Most common example is the right constantly going on about how they need to vote for (insert bad person here) because "they'll fix the economy" when we all know "fixing the economy" entails losing a million rights / protections that companies hate paying for. AKA a pointless temporary fix that will not benefit us in the longer term and does not actually hold the government accountable for allowing companies to price us out of our own livelihoods.

for those who dont understand how annoying is the NHK fee. you got to pay for merely HAVING a TV, mine was stored inside an wardrobe, the guy just invited himself in and started looking into my stuff looking for a TV to tax
Italy, same thing. TV is still considered a "luxury" item, just like a yacht, a supercar, a private jet etc. 1950's standards lol. So you have to pay the "Canone RAI" just by owning a tv. Even worse: it's mandatory, attached to your electricity bill. It's a tax based on a "possession presumption", so if you have a residential electricity subscription to a company = you have a tv in your house. To be excluded from payment, you have to send a postal notification to Rai EVERY YEAR, at your expense, declaring you're not owning a tv. Otherwise, 80 euros per year more included in your bills. 🫣 Italian democracy. 🤌
In Sweden, national TV fee is also compulsory. But the government got rid of the fee collecting personnel long time ago. Now, the fee is payed by the taxes instead, no where to run…
Im not gonna lie, the ENTIRE Tokyo Gov election earlier this year was SHEER GENIUS by Tachibana. Elections here are sometimes annoying and disruptive so it was quite interesting to see ALL the loophole and craziness exposed.

This sort of reminds me of how Uwe Boll would make bad movies to take advantage of the German government grants on movie makes. The germans hate him, and even made an online poll to have him retire and never make movies again.
I am a German video Game lover who works in the Film industry. Boll is the biggest joke ever. The damage he did to Video Game Movies and the German Movie Industry in general is unfathomable. He is such an Idiot that he thought challenging his most outspoken critics to a boxing match, something he has actually been training for decades while they have never been in a fight, would prove he is a director. I mean if he discussed them on the topic of filmmaking he would have made a fool of himself. So beating them up was his only option to feel like he won something other than the shame and ridicule his "Movies" brought him.
We have the same thing is Ireland for our national broadcaster RTÉ. Every citizen has to pay a yearly fee. I remember in 2019 or so in my school in Japan the NHKを部壊す meme was hilarious and my friends were all pumping their fists and saying the slogan while we took pictures together lol. I had no clue just how deep this went. But I just can't deny that he is entertaining lol.
I'm convinced that Tachibana's true goal was to simply spread his dislike for the NHK, and make money, but when he realised that lots of other people don't like the NHK (its door knockers specifically), he then had no idea what to do next. So, naturally, he decided to troll Japan's political parties, and Japanese people in general, and be a pain in the ass while doing so. Committing crimes was just a bonus! I was today years old when I found out about Japan allowing all kinds of hilarious and stupid "political advertising" on TV, but I think the icing on the cake was discovering an IDOL GROUP that is also, very... odd... and a REAL political party. It's so ridiculous, it has to be a joke, but it's a REAL thing, and not a joke at all.
Making money was definitely his goal, considering he was a "professional pachinko player". Unless he found an exploit the house always wins on those machines! So he was sponsored to scam people into arcades and gaming parlours! This whole thing is as Japanese as it can be! "We don't want money in politics, so we have incredibly ineffective rigid measures for campaigning! Also our MPs are immune from prosecution!" ?????? And the Idol group taking over a political party??? I was howling XD
Here in the UK we have TV licences which is basically a similar deal as they provide a significant proportion of BBC funding. However a lot of younger people only use streaming services rather than free to air television, hence a recent requirement for people watching BBC iPlayer to have a licence (although there's no verification as such). The BBC doesn't run commercials and doesn't do product placement on its own shows or those which they commission for themselves. They are pretty persistent at sending letters to homes without TV licences, but I've never seen them come knocking.
They are still fighting for control of the party. She is the "de jure" leader, while he is the "de facto" leader. English Wikipedia surprisingly has info on this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHK_Party
As a german, I feel so connected to the NHK haters (we have something similar here called "Rundfunkbeitrag". even if you don't own a TV you still have to pay for the public TV and radio channels, approx. 220 € or 244$ ) Though, you thankfully just get pestered with letters and bills if you do not pay
great story thank you. my favourite parts were the S&M plot twist and how tachibana can't follow ayaka into a building because he's like a yakuza game street enemy or something.
We have the same thing in Germany: GEZ is the German NHK basically. And yes: Even radios, cellphones and notebooks and tablets count because you consume media on them.
Wow... the NHK seem even worse than the IRS. And this party is the most dysfunctional and embarrassing thing I have ever seen. How tf does Japan put up with this?
Mostly they ignore it. It's also helped by the insularity/ignorance of what other cultures do and the common "well you see, Japan is special and unique so we HAVE to do it differently" attitude many more nationalist people use in the place of actually thinking about problems. But then again, what does not putting up with it even look like? I mean, why do Americans put up with having their political choices be Centre-right Weaksauce or Batshit Insane Fascists? Why do Britons tolerate their politics being dominated by a nonsense narrative about immigration when the infrastructure of the country like local government, hospitals and prisons are visibly failing before our eyes? Citizens have no recourse when their elected representatives decide they don't want to bother to represent people any more - that's the same everywhere.
The professional sign language interpreter having to work with these joke candidates is so funny. And to be fair, deaf people too deserve to be able to hear the candidates stupid shenanigans.
I want to know more too! Seems insane that a political party can be run in this way, and also bizarre that any idols would want to be connected to someone with that reputation
The same thing with tv license happened here in sweden. They would look into your windows to see if you have a tv. They then made it so that if you own a computer then you also have to pay a license. They got sued and lost and you no longer had to pay tv license if you owned a computer only. They then forcefully made it part of income tax, without anyone ever voting for it.
In Italy we have the same broadcasting tax but I know people that have never paid them like ever and nobody cares. Makes you feel even more stupid when paying it lol
This guy is an idiot, but oh my god I'm laughing so hard about how much the Tokyo election turned into a literal clown show. I do not know much about the life in Japan, but I read the Murakami's 1Q84 and one of the creepiest thing about that was the persistent NHK collector.
About a decade ago an NHK guy came to my apartment and asked me if I had a flip phone, and I said yes, and he said I needed to pay them because it was possible to watch NHK on the phone.
That is explicitly illegal now.
In germany, this line of thinking is the official explaination for why everyone has to pay for state media.

Something that the UK and Japan have in common other than television licences: having to give air time to all candidates/ parties equally. Loads of countries have tv licences, the Germans all have to pay with their property taxes

Imagine to vote a person whose only agenda is to cancel TV fees. The problem with voting in general, people always focuc on a single issue when choosing candidate and then they wonder when the person turns out to be incompetent
A problem that will never be solved. 😂

Yle isn’t that bad nor do I hate them that much but they don’t use their funds well.
