Damien Chazelle had the idea for this like ten years before it was produced. It stayed just an idea for so long because Hollywood execs just wouldn't fund it. It's impossible to convince Hollywood executives of what will work. They'll make thousands of poorly received and unprofitable movies with big name stars and trending formulas before they take a chance on anyone truly idealistic, because in the end, experienced execs would rather fail doing what they know than take a gamble on something they don't know. Funny thing is most of them probably ended up liking the movie after it came out, but they wouldn't have funded it before even though they read the screenplay! It's complete lunacy! And that, folks, is why Netflix and other streaming services are going to obliterate them.
I think it was because Ryan messed up the line a bit there, instead of "need this crazy feeling" he says "need THAT crazy feeling" and then kind of fades off in singing "feeling" and they laugh at his mess-up. I agree, a genuine human moment that really makes the scene. You can tell they get on really well as actors too.
There were a number of songs sung "in the moment" on this film. That's not usual. You can tell in the older musicals when they cut to the soundtrack from the dialogue, and they didn't want that in this film. "Audition; Fools Who Dream" was sung on the spot by Emma and kept, but the "Lovely Night" and "Another Day of Sun" sequences are examples of lip syncing of course. No one was meant to dance or sing expertly in this movie.
If this doesn't win best picture I'm gonna lose it. Seen all of the movies, this is by far the best. It's the only one that feels like a best picture movie, you know what I mean.

When I hear this song I can't help but tear up and mourn a life/dream that hasn't even had to chance to blossom yet. I never thought I'd stop being so optimistic until I realized that as a first-generation student my reality has no space for dreams anymore. People always tell us that there's nothing stopping us from our dreams but they just don't get it. To dream is a privilege and even the privileged have to be lucky. I can only hope that in my sacrifice, my offspring or even my youngest sibling can be privileged enough to live their own lives the way they truly dream it to be.
But what are you sacrificing? My dreams didn't come true and yet I'm happy. I sometimes think about what I didn't get to do although I tried but maybe that wasn't the path I was supposed to be on at all.

Back in 2016, my then girlfriend and I were watching this movie in our basement, and at the time we were so young and life was all rosey and cute. We had love, and that’s all we needed. I've seen a lot of musicals but this one is my favorite, the chemistry between them is so real. When I saw the movie for the first time, I was crying so much.
so has every other movie. the marvel movies have grand theatrical experiences, but lack the quality of a good movie. like this one, it doesn't have the balls to go all out R rated. it doesn't have the balls to go shaky cam too.
Nacho Sarsfield It's funny because La La Land did use shaky cam during the Mia/Seb dinner fight when he gets up to check on the oven. And I believe there were 2 uses of the word "fuck" which, if I'm not mistaken, by MPAA standards, could have invited an R-rating. So, see! This movie has something for everyone!
La La Land: As someone who is constantly very disappointed by the modern film musicals in this century, this film finally broke it for me and it was magic at the London Film Festival.
I didn't realize until like the 30th listen through but at 1:44 Ryan says "All that I need is THAT crazy feeling" and Emma says "All that I need is THIS crazy feeling" and Ryan realizes he messed up so he quiets down and Emma notices and giggles because he messed up and it just added a really cute element too it
Breaking Banter the plot of Moana is the same exact plot as in Hercules, and how far I'll go is the Moana version of "Go the Distance" so I don't really rate it. But to be fair City of Stars is no doubt the best song of the year but the best original song of all time? That's crazy
I'm a straight guy and I normally watch action thrillers, war films, Marvel movies, etc. But I'm not ashamed to say that this film has been living inside me for 3 days ever since I watched it with my gf, and I've been humming along to this song at work. Absolutely brilliant, stunning, gorgeous, genuine, meaningful film. One that hearkens back to the golden era of Hollywood musicals, before the era of big stage musicals being adapted for film. It oozes class!!
Tarik Ashmawi Most straight guys aren't into movies like this, that isn't a stereotype it's a fact. Just my way of complimenting the movie. So take your political correctness with you and get the fuck out of here!!!
Joana Silva Whatever, I'm not getting into an argument with anyone off the back of my comment. It was completely harmless and not meant to offend. People are reading far too much into it. That's the problem with society these days, it's like you're treading on eggshells half the time because some overly sensitive, overly politically correct arse hole is just waiting to pounce.
This isn't arguing. It is about telling that people have the right to be themselves without making excuses. If a boy likes the color pink, it's ok. I know that some people will call him gay, but people have to start to assume themselves and say that appreciating the color pink doesn't make a man sexually attracted to another man.
Emma stones voice is so warm and beautiful, reminds me of my mother. Ryan goslings voice shows how pure his heart is and he’s pretty simple . A simple good guy
This song encapsulates what it means to be an artist so clearly. You don't know where you're going; you just know that your heart's taking you to where you feel is right.
werdette Too. I think its the first movie ever which I just cannot forget. İts absolutely wonderful, every second of it, every song, every melody... So inspirational..
They share so many sweet glances at each other in this clip but my favorite is at 1:28. It went perfectly with the line, "a voice that says I'll be here, and you'll be all right."
La La Land or Moonlight? La La Land just makes me feel on cloud 9 at all times... Not anyone's life is that perfect... is it not possible? Sure is with this song 🤧
"I really dont like those musical movies" But then, when I saw the movie, I was really impressed about everything, the final is a piece of art. A surprise. (Sorry my bad English)
No other movie in my adult life has wrenched my heart like La La Land, was only able to watch in parts the second time couple years back and it still left me in an anguish spell for days after.
You have no idea how I love this song, especially the part " A look in somebody's eyes to light up the sky, to open the world and send reeling, A voice that says I'll be here and you'll be alright"
wow this movie is just splendid. this isn't about love its about price of success and scares of struggle , dreams , ambition and the choices we make . this colourful movie makes you laugh, cry and wants you to take out your dancing shoes . I urge you to watch it. don't miss it any cost. I love the ending part when mia found that sebs opened his own jazz and wheh she leaves the jezz with her husband they share this heartwarming smiles with each other I loved it.. #bestmovie
Here You are:)) City of stars Are you shining just for me City of stars There’s so much that I can’t see Who knows Is this the start of something wonderful? Or one more dream that I cannot make true City of stars, Just one thing everybody wants There in the bars, Or trough the smokescreen of the crowded restaurants It's love, yes all we're lookin' for it's love From someone else A rush, a glance, a touch, a dance A look in somebody's eyes To light up the skies To open the world and send them reeling The voice that say's: "I'll be here, and you'll be okay" I don't care if I know, Just where I will go 'Cause all that I need's this crazy filling The rat-ta-tat of my heart. Think I want it to stay. Have a good day xx
It was great to see how they each contributed to the others career in a way that made them successful. They pushed each other to make sacrifices that they couldn't do without each other. But it ultimately is what drove them apart.
People who have done things in their lives and are of some age (like me), seeing this film and especially this scene, surely have the questions you say... It's how you have anxiety within yourself, not letting the time pass and live and dream as you want. That's what these two kids did. The realization of their dreams paid the cost of not being together. As the story was staged, if they stayed together, the girl would still sell coffees and the boy would play the music he did not like, they would be together for a while, and then the non-satisfaction of their individual ambitions would bring the separation. This is also a possible turn of the story. However, this film - which I saw tonight - is simply amazing in all respects.
I love Emma Stone's facial expression of longing at 0:54. A few seconds later she has transitioned into a loving girlfriend expression. She's absolutely masterful. Wonderful movie, wonderful songs, wonderful characters. I'll keep playing this clip over and over while waiting for it to come out for home use. I hope it becomes the huge commercial success that it deserves to be.
This made me fall in love with musicals. I’d seen a few before this film, but seeing it in a theatre made me appreciate that a musical can not just be entertainment but true cinematic art.
Ignacia Pizarro not all because the end for me is not like it should be.. I know they choose a way to the dreams but when I saw her with somebody who isnt Seb and that their love didnt survive I start crying, but it wasnt just moving but wild sob hah
God, I loved this film. I haven't enjoyed anything so fully, so completely since seeing Baz Luhrman's "Moulin Rouge", all those years ago. I don't own many movies or try to but this I will.
Boy In The Box what do Marvel and DC movies have to do with this? I love comic book movies but the only comic book movie has even come close to my top 5 of the year has been The Dark Knight. They are great for what they are, but there are so many great movies every year I don't see why that comment was necessary. It's not like the super hero movies are the ones getting award recognition; it is normally the dramatic movies that get recognized.
qazplm 1029 Go to the cinema more. Comic book films and sequels take up less than 5% of films, people just can't be arsed to look and would rather complain. Anyway, Civil War was one of the best films I've ever watched and my favourite of the year (out of 100). Just because a film is based around superheroes doesn't mean it's anything like other superhero films. It's like saying all noirs or westerns are the same. I hate this air of pretentiousness with people when it comes to superhero films.
Boy In The Box dude comic book movies are the minority at the box office. Their are way more regular movies but nobody's going to see them. If your tired of comic book movies find something else. I don't know how this can be compared to any comic book movie. Comic book movies have been going for 30 years their not going away any time soon. It annoys the crap out of me how people bash comic book movies, and they get no recognition when some of them deserve to win awards it blows my mind.
This song makes me sad. It's like an empty nostalgia for something I've not experienced.

so has every other movie. the marvel movies have grand theatrical experiences, but lack the quality of a good movie. like this one, it doesn't have the balls to go all out R rated. it doesn't have the balls to go shaky cam too.
UnbelievabIeMontages lol why should it be R rated??? or have shakycam??
Nacho Sarsfield It's funny because La La Land did use shaky cam during the Mia/Seb dinner fight when he gets up to check on the oven. And I believe there were 2 uses of the word "fuck" which, if I'm not mistaken, by MPAA standards, could have invited an R-rating.
So, see! This movie has something for everyone!
YES. Exactly. And what an experience it is.
senorashish yes agreed!!i felt so many different kinds of emotions and it was great and it happens in real life too what happened in the movie
This song is brainwashing me I swear. It is beautiful and I can't help picturing the scenes behind my eyelids.
wonderful
Saw it twice I'm obsessed with it too
Joyce Dutrisac Saw it twice too! Made me shed some confused tears- happy, sad, overwhelmed, disappointed, heart-filled and heartbroken all at once

Ryan Gosling just can't make a bad movie. He just can't
Ryan does his best as romantic love interest.

@@AbhraSoni In my opinion, it was terrible. I walked out of the cinema hall after the first half
La La Land: As someone who is constantly very disappointed by the modern film musicals in this century, this film finally broke it for me and it was magic at the London Film Festival.
I didn't realize until like the 30th listen through but at 1:44 Ryan says "All that I need is THAT crazy feeling" and Emma says "All that I need is THIS crazy feeling" and Ryan realizes he messed up so he quiets down and Emma notices and giggles because he messed up and it just added a really cute element too it
THIS IS THE BEST ORIGINAL SONG FOR A FILM THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD!
I think this give out "The Moon Song" kinda vibe from Her. Both very dreamy and romantic
You're crazy
It should take the Oscar easily. "How Far I'll Go" from Moana was amazing too though.
Breaking Banter the plot of Moana is the same exact plot as in Hercules, and how far I'll go is the Moana version of "Go the Distance" so I don't really rate it. But to be fair City of Stars is no doubt the best song of the year but the best original song of all time? That's crazy
This and Drive it like you stole it for me. Hopefully either wins at oscars
Hurts your guts when you know the full story! Both played their roles so well, so emotional.
Why do I cry when these two are laughing😭

Me too😭
Because it's just one more dream that you cannot make true.

Tarik Ashmawi musicals are supposed to be gay, you know..
Tarik Ashmawi Most straight guys aren't into movies like this, that isn't a stereotype it's a fact. Just my way of complimenting the movie. So take your political correctness with you and get the fuck out of here!!!
This is a stereotype. Why do we need to defend ourselves for liking whatever we like?
Dear god; THANK YOU FOR RYAN GOSLING YOU DID AN AMAZING JOB
I'm seeing this at an Advance Screening in four days and I am so anxious to leave the house because I DON'T WANNA DIE UNTIL I SEE LA LA LAND
Thomas Tang it's already out in select theaters, I'm gonna see it tomorrow for my birthday
the movie's amazing
The little laugh they have towards the end is so genuine
This song encapsulates what it means to be an artist so clearly. You don't know where you're going; you just know that your heart's taking you to where you feel is right.
i'm still not over this movie
werdette Exactly :D I quess it will take a lot of time till I stop thinking about these two :D
yeah.. Hi from my time... Still not over this movie

They share so many sweet glances at each other in this clip but my favorite is at 1:28. It went perfectly with the line, "a voice that says I'll be here, and you'll be all right."
It’s just about midnight. My love life is stupidly confusing but this song makes me not feel so lonely.... 💜
City of stars... 😊
La La Land or Moonlight? La La Land just makes me feel on cloud 9 at all times... Not anyone's life is that perfect... is it not possible? Sure is with this song 🤧

We need more movies with Ryan Gosling singing. He’s actually really great at it.
0:48 Damn, she DOES sing in this bit.
She croaks, like a frog.
Vino Well,a bit.
she did broadway so yea, she pretty much knows how to sing

You have no idea how I love this song, especially the part " A look in somebody's eyes to light up the sky, to open the world and send reeling, A voice that says I'll be here and you'll be alright"

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have so much chemistry together in this film
I'm addicted to this song.

who else is addicted to this?
This song is on repeat in my mind 24/7 since I left La La Land in tears of melancholic joy.
It was 8 years ago it took me down the memory lane. Beautiful song.
i love the guy watching ryan's character and his wife dancing like "wth do you think you're doing??" 😂
wow this movie is just splendid. this isn't about love its about price of success and scares of struggle , dreams , ambition and the choices we make . this colourful movie makes you laugh, cry and wants you to take out your dancing shoes . I urge you to watch it. don't miss it any cost. I love the ending part when mia found that sebs opened his own jazz and wheh she leaves the jezz with her husband they share this heartwarming smiles with each other I loved it.. #bestmovie

City of stars
Are you shining just for me
City of stars
There’s so much that I can’t see
Who knows
Is this the start of something wonderful?
Or one more dream that I cannot make true
City of stars,
Just one thing everybody wants
There in the bars,
Or trough the smokescreen of the crowded restaurants
It's love, yes all we're lookin' for it's love
From someone else
A rush, a glance, a touch, a dance
A look in somebody's eyes
To light up the skies
To open the world and send them reeling
The voice that say's:
"I'll be here, and you'll be okay"
I don't care if I know,
Just where I will go
'Cause all that I need's this crazy filling
The rat-ta-tat of my heart.
Think I want it to stay.
Have a good day xx

My boyfriend and I were crying at the end of this movie. It was pure magic. I am seeing it again this weekend :)
Love the message, you pick your dreams over the person you love! this was such a beautiful movie!!
Marce S yes, and jazz need to be the worlds leading genre again!
Stefane stefane me too I hate this modern day trash music.
It was great to see how they each contributed to the others career in a way that made them successful. They pushed each other to make sacrifices that they couldn't do without each other. But it ultimately is what drove them apart.
Was that the message!? I think the message was more, perfection or magic is unrealistic, but that's OK.
Marce S To be more accurate, I think the message was pursue your dream without any comprises for the sake of your love.

Masterpiece.
Thanks, Chazelle. Your movie is a gift for the cinema.
I hope it becomes the huge commercial success that it deserves to be.
my god her acting is on point
I don't think she is acting, maybe she has a crash on him. maybe she has him in the soft-spot.
+paradox95 What makes you say that? Do you think all the actors or actresses that play in romantic movies are in love with their partner?
Since I said "I don't think" and "maybe" why would I assume that for all actors?
This made me fall in love with musicals. I’d seen a few before this film, but seeing it in a theatre made me appreciate that a musical can not just be entertainment but true cinematic art.
I'm not usually into musicals but I love this movie so much

john perescu very true!
i think this is going to be my favorite movie from 2016. so tired of marvel and dc movies.

So beautiful, this looks and sounds amazing
