To "correct" those spots you mentioned regarding the "gapping"; would you have to slice the material and pull it from the backside to have it conform to the item's shape?
I've had the same problem . I thought I'll just cut it so it will lay down in there. But then I have the problem of the weave coming apart. If you figure that out let me know.

Once you apply resin, there's no going back because it soaks into the material and hardens. You would damage everything trying to fix it.
