“AMERICAN PICKERS” TRIP TO NYC & NEW JERSEY TURNS UP ULTRA RARE GM NOS RESTORATION PARTS STASH!

  • A last minute change of plans before we were supposed to leave for Florida sent me in a completely different direction this past weekend.
After finding a possible broken flex plate on my Malibu I decided to stay home rather than risk taking the car to Florida.
Instead I got to work tuning the carburetor on the Orange 70 Nova, and then an opportunity presented itself to go to New York City and New Jersey to go “PARTS PICKING”
Let’s just say I had a great time, and I think you will too! 🤣

Hey Bill your drone shots are epic and make your videos even better to watch. And I know it takes time for you to pull over and do them so keep up the good work

    • @US-191
      @US-191 4 месяца назад

Ya'know, I was just thinking the same thing. It been about 30 years since I drove through the tunnel at Wheeling, WV. When Bill took the time to take old I-70, cross the old bridge, and through the tunnel, it brought back wonderful memories. Then I considered the time it took to leave the highway, find a place to park, and follow up with drone footage, well... that is a LOT of effort for a bunch of people he doesn't even know and will probably never meet. Thank You, Bill! And I'm certain more people than T. Ward and I pick up on these things, your efforts do not go unnoticed!
Aw hell... I'm already on the keyboard so I'll keep pounding. With 579 comments already, I doubt you'll ever read this one, but I'll go ahead and continue. This video was your BEST: Editing, content, storyline. Other than the click-bait title and the brief footage of.. uh...the individual who is ending the historical significance of a 50 year time capsule Nova, it was a perfect video! Starting with some excellent tuning advice and a Mark cameo (that guy is gold!) The Ohio back roads, the lengthy road-trip, the Pennsylvania tunnels, your GPS mistakes, the overcast, the Long Island geography lesson from the guy who considers road signs to be optional, (to be fair, I think that's in his Long Island DNA). Then the segment with the parts-stash Dude, etc. But the BEST was the bloodhound wake-up alarm and your face!! Hah- I damn near fell outta my recliner on that one! And then admittedly, I snorted my coffee the second time it happened! Well done, well timed. On the flip side, watching you constantly fix Billy's cars and trailering 4 or 5 cars to a "street race" well, it no longer holds my interest. Way too much stress and headaches. I hope you can find enough subscribers who want to watch this most recent kind of Old Mans Garage video and that you keep turning them out. You had asked for input, so consider this only constructive criticism. No disrespect to you or your family, but please go back to being "Old Man's Garage" channel with tuning, family, realistic car builds, street racing that you DRIVE to- not trailer, interviews with your business associates, some behind the scenes/take-outs/bloopers etc. It kind of seems like OMG is becoming a support Billy's SRC channel. I honestly believe many of us come for you, Vicki, Jeremy (Bucko), your Dad (more please...I know he doesn't talk much, but some farming, history or old stories would be nice), Paige, Mark (Chumpy), Bob, the dawgs and the rest of your Buckeye misfits and outcasts. ...anyhow, that's my .02
      -JDH

I worked at a Chevy dealership in the 80's. We all had those parts cages. We strapped them to the walls in the shop. And our tool boxes fit perfectly inside. And they were lockable. The floors in the cages folded up. They were perfect.
And yes, the shop I worked at had some serious hot rod guys. So we had hi-performance parts and sheet metal everywhere. You name it and it was in the shop. Fantastic times in my life. Great people I worked with. Memories I will never forget.

    I been thinking
    As a 66yo petrol head
I too had an El Camino 6cylinder 4,1 lutre (250 cube?)
Torque monsters and reasonably good on fuel mileage too
Keep yours "stock" ish..... just seen the vid of house of pearls buffing it. Really sweet ride.
Back to the motor. Fit a nice exhaust manifold, a turbo on low boost with a blow thru 4 barrel on it. Some nice brakes for the stoppy thingy when you need to, some shock and suspension mods and you can easily double the horsepower in stock motor. Those old 6 pots were bullet proof. You dont need to reve them through the roof either.
That way you have a high torque motor that is reasonably economical and can pick up the skirt and take off if needed. Wont scare mrs either till she overtakes a vehicle and things happen a lot faster than she remembered.....
I never did it, but i believe a "torque storm" type supercharger can turn the El Camino into a 6 pot tyre shredder.....
What about it? Something different? Give it a go.....?

Since I haven't seen anyone else comment about this. I'm like most of us watching this channel and a V8 rear wheel drive is usually the go to driveline for all vehicles on this channel. But this man has one of the cleanest 1993 Chevrolet Lumina Z34 I've seen since probably 95! That's a 30 year old car behind him that nobody has ever decided to do a restoration on thinking it'll be a classic one day. It's just been very well maintained its entire life. I may be the only one that can appreciate all that, but I can also still remember my mom having a black one because we are all Earnhardt fans and even learning how to drive a 5 speed in it "a ultra rare combination to find". I remember that car hurting several 5.0's feelings when they found out that it was a DOHC 3.4L engine and front wheel drive. Top speed was a lot more than the 120 mph on the dash. I hit that half way through 4th gear shortly after I got my license! What I wouldn't give to find a clean one in black with grey interior with the 5 speed.

How you get on with the parts store folks is the best part. Seems like everybody's day is improved when you all get together.
    On a side note:
On a dry day, the hill climbs on both sides of those tunnels on the Turnpike are amazing from the cockpit of a muscle car. I had the most fun in a Gen 2 CTSV (it doesn't garner much attention) and the second most fun in twin screw Fox Mustang (I was afraid to open this up all the way because it grabs attention and it's loud). You will have to do this trip again, in one of your favorites.

Friends of mine work at a large city landfill, some drove the roll off dumpster trucks some run the heavy equipment used to move, and compact all the waste material.
Well there was a GM distribution facility, and it Mopar distribution facility sitting side by side that were there for years, and I haven't been that part of that area in many years now so I don't know if they're still there or not.
But they use to watch what came out of the roll off dumpsters when they came in, and backed up on to the edge of the landfill to see what goodies rolled down the mountain of trash that they were supposed to push even more trash over on top of everything that came from either distribution facility.
They were told to make sure that no one could get anything from either dumpster, because it wss returns, no longer active stock, defects, and couple other things according to both GM, and MOPAR.
And they did not want anyone to be able to have sell use trade or give away anything that was dumped.
Well you don't tell a bunch of young men that are into hot rods, are working on cars or trucks regularly about factory parts being destroyed where they were in control of equipment that was responsible for destroying such items.
We had shocks radios, radiators speakers fuel pumps carburetors distributors caps rotors plug wires spark plugs and too many other things to mention brand new in the boxes for every variation of GM, and Mopar you could think of as far as small parts go.
Interior pieces, grills taillights parking lights the complete assemblies for years i never bough things like that, probably one or two of those boys, all in the 60's now probably have a stash somewhere crammed full of things such as that.
I think the last one just retired a couple years ago, and as far as I know him and his son still have a race car and do miscellaneous mechanical work for Friends and family to this day.
So who knows how much they have stashed away.
