New RVer. 1 Yr in but mostly stationary. We bought a used 2020 Solitude that had 4 lithium batteries and solar. Therefore when traveling we have run our fridge Norcold off of batteries and so far it has made the trip fine though we have not done a time test.
nice set up, thanks for watching!
I found some flat ice packs on Amazon that i really like - "Tourit" - quart pack equals 3 lbs of ice, they are colder than ice, stay cold longer, reusable, durable, non hazardous - 4 for $15 currently. I even leave 4 throughout my freezer in case power goes out, would have to be off a really long time before things would begin to thaw. So cold you do NOT use on skin .. hard to hold on to. They come in various sizes.
Safe travels❣️
thanks for sharing Deborah, do you have a link?
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS i had never tried it before, took me a little minute to figure it out .. but now we know ! )
This is why I love your video’s Ross! Something every RVer wonders about but no one really answers it… Until now. Great job!
Thank you sir!
I wish there was a system that displayed the inside, outside, freezer, and refrigerator temps on the same display.
Ill see if I can find one.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Awesome! I've not seen one, but if it existed for a reasonable price, I'd buy it. We all use all of that info.
I buy groceries when I arrived or use cooler. I do not use propane for frig during travel. Just me.
same here bud, grocery shopping after arriving gives us a chance to get out and see the local businesses.
The real question is why did they do away with the 3 way refrigerator?
Because the 3-way fridge is a lie. The type of fridge that runs on propane is not very energy efficient with electricity.
good question
Thanks for watching!
Great and honest review. I live in San Diego CA. I have made numerous trips from SD to the Midwest in the summer and temps were 115 for three days. I had to leave my absorption refrigerator running on propane. I have since replaced the absorption refrigerator with a 12v compressor refrigerator and couldn’t be happier. I have lithium and lots of solar so the refrigerator now stays on 24/7/365 even while in storage. One of the advantages of endless sunshine.
Thanks for sharing!
I drive 6+ hours, sometimes 7 if heavy traffic. Travel Trailer. The fridge is off on this trip. The ice remains frozen. The ice cream does not melt, but stays hard. The beer in the fridge remains cold. I drink my first beer when setting up camp. (I love cold beer) I never did all the research and testing, as you did. But everything in the fridge / freezer was fine for 6 to 7 hours. Summer travel. 80 to 90 degrees outside.
Thanks for watching!
We run with propane on and installed gas stop on the propane tank
I've always traveled with the propane on and never had a problem.
It illegal to travel with the propane on in Ontario
Most drivers on the road generally give RVs a wide berth. It only takes one knuclkehrad to cause an accident sadly.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
true
I use an electric cooler (alpicool) for refrigerated foods. 12v dc or 110 ac power uses 45watts. I plug it in the bed of my truck (with camper she'll topper) while driving. The temperature can be adjusted from -3°f to 50°f. And Bluetooth to phone/tablet. Works awesome.
Nice! Do you have a link?
A good thing to do if you're going to leave your RV for a long period of time, put a small cup with a couple ice cubes in it. If you return after a long day out, the ice will have melted a bit and refroze if park power was lost and restored. That'll let you know the possibility of compromised perishables in the fridge.
great idea
Neat life hack.
Or just leave the fridge control on auto so if power was lost, gas takes over.....no loss of perishables. This is based on this fridge in this video....
nice tip!
agree!
I use propane for my fridge. Monitoring the temp in warmer southern climates I’ve noticed propane will keep the temperatures close but I see a gradual 2-3 degree climb in temperature. I do not monitor my freezer. I normally drive 300 miles or less usually a total of 6 hours maximum. I would enjoy seeing your debate on the pros and cons of traveling with the propane on.
thanks for watching... my debate on pros and cons... well ill say this... i wear my seatbelt, even though i havent been in an accident in years. so even though a lot of people drive with propane on (for 40+ years as they say lol) with no problems, that doesnt mean something cant happen. we usually pack light anyway and if we need food we hit a local grocery store when we arrive at the campground. it gives us the opportunity to get out and see the area a little anyway.
This would be a cool video to have a bunch of RVers do the same experiment and share the data. Although it may be unnecessary as the industry standard is going to be 12v fridges or residential with and inverter so they can be running while traveling.
Are you saying that's GOING to eventually be the standard?
Truthfully, I don't know why the industry didn't do this year's ago. RV manufacturers really don't listen to the customers like they should.
agree
some folks might even opt to replace the absorption fridges with 12 v
I had usually turned off the fridge if I'm 2 hours away. Have had it off for a 4 hour drive. When bringing ice cream from home, the wife doesn't like it soft (that didn't sound right) so I've been driving w/ the gas on. Since you don't want to have that debate, tanks have a sudden leak detector that will stop the gas from coming out if hit. (according to Todd from the RV academy)
correct, but Todd also condones turning off the propane while driving for techinical purposes of how the fridge operates.
When I had a gas/electric fridge, I always ran with the gas on during travel days. Now I have a inverter/solar pack with a residential fridge and don’t have to worry about it.
nice!
Dry ice works great and i leave the propane on
Thanks for watching!
Very different results from driving in the fall. Great info.
thanks
Have had an RV with a propane fridge since late 1980s and have never had an issue with propane on while traveling. I will continue to do so until I RV no more. Oh and this "rule" of 300 miles/day is silly to me. Each drive, like your test, has many variables, weather, fatigue, traffic, etc.
I drive until I don't want to drive any longer. It's really that simple.
I chose 5 hours because I know a lot of rv'ers arent driving over that limit. That way this test would give as many folks as possible an idea of what to expect. If you drive 2 hours, you have 2 hour results. Drive 4 hours then 4 hour results, and so on. The reason I mention the rule is because a LOT of people follow it, whether you agree with it or not. I actually agree with you, you should drive based on conditions and mental/physical capacity, not just set a time limit, but that discussion in this video detracts from what my purpose was. Thanks for watching.
Ran my propane fridge from April until we put it away in October, towing, parked and in between. Never an issue and it worked fine. New camper has 12V fridge and it runs 24/7 as well.
It will work fine... The problem is when you have a traffic accident, your rv becomes a danger spewing propane
Thanks for watching!
good point
Hi Ross have a 12 volt fridge can you drive with the fridge on I’ve heard mixed reviews I would like your opinion thanks Tom from canada
I've probably heard the same things as you... honestly its something I would like to research in more depth, and I do know it depends on a couple factors as well. That might be a video for this year. In the meantime, see what you can find online from trusted sources, I just dont want to misspeak as I dont feel 100% on an answer yet.
85 degrees is NOT a hot day. How well does fridge keep cold in 110 degree day. Had a couple 100+ days last month in AZ.
Inside trailer was 100+ when we stopped for the night.
110 is a hot day, but not nearly indicative of what the average rv’er is going to experience on an average travel day. Considering the entire country I think 85 is a much more realistic average than 100-110.
Our fridge really struggles in 90 + degree weather. We freeze water at night and then load it into refrigerator in the morning. Actually freezing water 24/7, just swapping between the two every 12 hours. Keeps in low 40’s on ac or propane.
thanks for pointing that out, ihavent done enough research into how 12 volt fridges handle high temps but RV fridges really need to improve.
I added an inverter and 2 105 Ah lithium batteries to our Imagine so we run off of power. The idea of running with propane on is not something we were in favor of. After we blew a tire once which in turn busted a propane line at the fitting there is no way I would do that. I've not run any specific tests but it is interesting to see how much power we use while traveling but still maintaining the required fridge and freezer temperature. If temps are high we will bump up the setting the night before then turn it down and move freezer packs into the fridge.
Very nice mod, thanks for sharing Eric!
One thing I have found success with is taking drinking containers that can be frozen whether it's bottled water or a reusable bottle leave the cap slightly off put them in the freezer the night before then on the day of travel put them in your fridge it's a win-win because when you stop you have nice cold water to drink and your fridge is still cold
GREAT little tip, thank you for sharing!
Yup, keep the fridge full and add freezer packs. Works just fine for most drives.
thanks for watching and commenting
we freeze some 1/2 gallon milk jugs with water and stick in the refrigerator.
thanks for adding
The fridge does have DC electric in it so why can you keep it on the electric setting. I have a class c so it won’t get as hot inside.
thats only if you have a 12 volt ffridge. absorption fridges do not have dc electric power, and even though 12 volt fridges are becoming popular, absorption fridges still dominate whats on the road today.
I always leave it on…..
Thanks! We usually keep our food in the cooler, if we don't get a chance to plugin in the RV overnight. Usually, after plugin at home over night, the fridge stay cool and traveling days. We DO NOT drive with the propane on. , On our last trip, we drove from Virginia to home, which tool 6 1/2 hour and everything was fine. When we left the campsite in the Virginia, there was ice and frozen food in the freeze, which did not thaws. I have the same fridge as your video.
Thanks for watching!
Why not just run the fridge on gas? We've done it for 10 yrs and 20k miles, works fine
Thanks for watching!
I freeze up water bottles and before a trip load them up in my refrig and it cools down pretty quick then just load in your food. A small 12 V fan also helps to keep things colder. If you have an old PC with a fan you can put a USB connection on there. it works pretty good.
Great tips thanks for sharing!
Load in?
It's water you'll use later, so good idea all-around.
We have started using a cooler with ice when we are traveling more than 3 hours
until we get a 12 volt fridge, thats what we will be doing on trips longer than 90 minutes away.
I put a 12-volt refrigerator in a few months ago from recpro the 10.7 cubic inch. Kind of like you mentioned it wasn't cheap 👍🇺🇲
We learned the hard way- no, our does not maintain the cool!
Thanks for watching!
Put 2 small computer fans of Refrigerator vent, it will work wonders!
Does Yeti make a rv fridge?
Haha! You think like me! I wish. I said in the video rv fridge companies need to make their insulation properties better but it was cut out in editing.
We drive we our fridge on.
thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a new travel trailer so I have the 12volt fridge and it is very nice, but when I had the electric/propane fidge I always ran it on propane while traveling and never had a issue.
We did the same with out truck camper. No issues at all
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
Great video once agsin!
My Norcold in my Tioga Class C would nit stay cool long. Always ran propane on the road.
My 2019 Puma Had Ever Chill electric... 3 of them inside of 6 months!
Now 2020 Flagstaff with absoebtion Dometic.
Ran a 7 hour trip without propane ( accidentally. The auto switch over regulator switcged over however bottle number 2 was shut off!).
We were pretty well loaded up with fresh and frozen goods.
When we arrived at our destination we were greeted with the screamung alarm of the fridge failure!
Freezer stuff still frozen but barely. Fresh goods were cool to the touch but not warm. Ambient temps around 80.
We decided to chuck the potatoe salad and a couple other items to be on the safe side.
I might run 4 hours full food without propabe. Beyond that will run propane on the road.
thanks for watching and commenting!
I run my LP
thanks for commenting!
Thanks for the great content as usual! Any chance you will do a video on improving the efficiency of these fridges? I've seen videos of adding fans to the back as well as the inside, so we did that on ours... Unfortunately, using a Bluetooth thermometer like you used in this video, we actually were getting higher temps with the fans on!
That’s interesting thanks for sharing. I think I’m done with absorption fridge content for a while. My new rv will have a 12 volt compressor fridge, so I’m interested to play around with those.
We take ice packs from the freezer and place them in the fridge. And getting the fridge up and running, as soon as we arrive, is our first priority. We can level and do everything else afterwards. Fridge first!, is our montra.
Our travel trailer has an inverter. Why the factory did not hook up the 12-volt through the inverter to the fridge, is a mystery.
Our tow vehicle charges the travel trailer battery as well as its own battery so why would they not hook that up so we could run the fridge on electric while towing?
no idea, but that would make sense. looking forward to having a 12 volt fridge on our next rig.
Almost 2 years full time in RV. I always travel with the propane on. No problems yet.
Thanks for watching!
I run my fridge on propane while traveling. I don’t have to deal with tunnels or anything else that might require it to be shut off. I do turn off my propane while fueling though. If it’s really hot out - I drive with the generator on so I can run the coach A/C , so the fridge gets 120v then. No issues, and no worries.
Thanks for watching!
I know this video caters more to the trailer RV, but in my Motorhome there are a couple of other factors. First of all, since we are inside the RV while traveling, the indoor temperature is not as warm. We typically only run the Dash A/C so it's not room temperature comfortable, but in the 80-85 range where the fridge is. Secondly since we do have an onboard generator, we will typically turn that on and run the fridge while we are stopped for lunch.
great points that would definitely make a difference in your results.
Great content, my Transend has a 12v fridge, highly recommend.
I’m jealous Joe, I want one badly!
Excellent information Ross. Can I ask what you do when driving?
our trips are usually short so i power the fridge a day before and turn the propane off while driving.
We normally just buy groceries once we get to our destination. If we're taking meats with us we'll use our cooler.
we do the same thing, we pack what we know we cant find everywhere, and then hit the store when we get there. gives us a chance to get out and see the local area too.
I start my fridge the night before. I leave it on to my destination.
Load my Rtic cooler up and load the fridge/freezer when I get to our spot.
We only go about 2 hours away.
Yes I leave the propane on
But you definitely gave me some great ideas to get the fridge/freezer colder.
Thanks for watching!
I've been using freezer packs for years. They're great to have, reusable and reliable.
Yes they are!
I've actually run my fridge for a week at a time on propane and no issues
Thanks for watching!
I have also Acurite temp sensors we’re going for 2 weeks 5 hour trip i going to give it a try thanks Ross
thanks again Corey!
What few things we bring goes in a cooler and we go shopping after we set up.
thanks for sharing Tom
I take the chance and have always left the gas on. Mine faces the rear which has to be just a wee safer.
Ive driven with it on too, most of our trips lately are 90 minutes so I leave it off.
Good test. I still leave the gas on until I can afford an inverter.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent test, very thorough !
thank you
Well structured experiment!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent tips

Hey Ross how are you
hey bud, working my way through old comments, trying to get to the point where i have responded to all comments from day 1. its taking me a while, but i should be there by the end of summer, and then can just stay on top of them daily.
