I bought a Sony a6000 last year and have just discovered time lapse. OMG you guys have stunning results. very inspiring, I have only scratched the surface!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a lot to learn but with your channel I am going to get there :-))))))
You guys rock! everyone is an amateur at some point. These tutorials have helped immensely. Giving me some skill and insight on how to go out and capture the beauty of the world around me in a new an exciting way. please keep it up.
+AJ pollinger - You bet. Hey, Jonas and I are still learning too. Many of these techniques are pretty specialized things. I personally enjoy watching other filmmakers and photographers and learning from them. I feel this is a good way for us to give back to the community. Thanks for the comment! - R
Your channel has some of the best filmmaking tutorial vids on the web. The time and effort you take to show the how and why of various processes is engaging and informative. Maybe I am just a sucker for background music, but your format really seems to work for me. WELL DONE AND KEEP IT UP!
you are doing great tutorial ,, im completely new in time lapse thing ,, i've been doing some landscape nightscape/ long exposure shot like northern lights and a little bit of portraiture .. but i really wanna try this time lapse as my new project.. thank you so much for sharing your awesome technique.... love it..
Very informative video. I just picked up a canon 80d and just getting started in the video making process. Something I've always wanted to do and now I'm finally able. Thanks for the vids, and definitely subbed.
Thanks. Yeah, we have a mix of styles and content coming out. I see you are shooting a lot with a drone, that's sweet! The next one I'll put out will probably be another short drone related video but without flying it. Kind of curious myself to see how that one turns out... haha /Jonas
Can't wait man! I have your drone video ''how to shoot an aerial time lapse'' bookmarked because I need to watch it haha. It's difficult to shoot good time lapses with my Phantom 3 Professional because of the shake and stuff!
Been wanting to fine places around Charlotte to get a better view of the skyline. The Green Deck is too close to the uptown buildings and has a hotel being constructed now. So looking out towards CPCC is a great idea. I work in downtown and love its look at night. Great tutorial for me now to go and make one myself. Keep up the good work!
+Mario Bianco Awesome! It's a great parking deck. Maybe we'll cross paths one day! I live right next to the whitewater center and paddle there almost every day.
Thank you guys.. your awesome... because I take very long time lapse sequences I tend to lean towards Michelle's technique specially now that with camera's like the Canon 7dMKII and 5Dmk III not forgetting the Sony's 7 series able to execute this all in Aperture priority very effectively as if there were made for time lapse, which means I can basically leave it alone till its done. downloading LR Time-lapse 4 right now.. cheers
I would like to add something that I think would dramatically reduce your render time. Rather than using AE which is fairly heavy with all sorts of things that you really don't need in a timelapse (unless the goal is to add a bunch of odd effects that i have yet to see be used in a professional way anyways), switch to premiere pro instead. Importing is easy as you can pick either to import a sequence of images (in which case Premiere will make a single file out of it in premiere) or import all pictures and simply make sure to set the framerate for the images to 1 (easily done by selecting all images, right-clickling and adjust time there BEFORE dragging everything to the timeline). Once you have done that its just drag and drop onto the timeline and you have a finished timelapse. It is also easier to do any additional colorgrading in Premiere as those filters/effects (whatever you want to call them really) is much easier to find. I like AE and have used it a bit, but generally for this kind of work i find it to be rather bulky compared to premiere.
I have started a channel (not this channel I'm commenting with) to do slow motions, cinematics and timelapses. I love your content. Thank you for the content. I can't believe you only have 21k subs
Thanks as always Rob. My 2 cents is use manual when possible, but with the upgraded deflicker in LRTimelapse I use Aperture almost exclusively in daytime. Don't think I could have done that in Jan 2016 but Gunther (LRTIMELAPSE guru) has really made things much easier.
Rob & Jonas every week I look forward to your videos! Timelapse is certainly something I do a lot of while out in nature and these tips here are fantastic! Frankly, of all the channels I'm subscribed to this is one of less than handful I lend my full attention to! Keep up the great work! I wish I could collaborate or push more views your way to keep your production working out for you! :)
+Neil's in... Ahhh. That's nice of you say. It also motivates me to make sure both Jonas and I are putting out good stuff each week - we know you'll be watching! - R
Rob, thanks, I'm currently working on a 8 episode series of videos presently, and despite it taking me months to produce many of your videos have influenced me to do better with my own or provided me with guidance to improve! Cheers!
+David Devere - It'll blow you away after you complete your first one! Set aside a good 4 hours to do the post-processing the first time though. :) Let us see it when you did one!
Thank you for this informative video, I did learn a lot, in the very near future, I'm going to do a time lapse video like yours using my Gopro 5. Again thank you, you have great videos.
Hi Rob & Jonas, After watching this video a few weeks back I bought the 'LR Time-lapse 4' software and couldn't be more impressed with it. This video is a godsend if you just want to jump straight in and get to work with it. I love filming time-lapses and have only just recently become a convert to RAW-NEF from jpegs. After completing my first 12 hour time-lapse using RAW, I can definitely see the benefits in post production using Lightroom, LR Time-lapse 4 and FCPX. I've even gone back to earlier time-lapses, converted the images from jpeg to dng so I can further clean up my images in post-production following the steps you've outlined here. I do have a question regarding music, I've looked around for free music I can use for my personal projects and even though I have been able to use classical pieces older than 70 years, I would like to move to more modern music similar to the styles you have displayed in your pieces. Is there a particular website you can recommend to get free music for personal/ non profit projects or do you mix your own music? Any tips or suggestions you or anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work guys!
I spent $200 bucks and bought the Timelapse+ to do bulb-ramping and motion control. Would love to see you guys do a tutorial using one of those tethered to a full 3-axis motion control rig. Something like the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero and NMX controller :) Hintedy hint hint.
Nice tutorial, but In the beginning I thought it would be more about manual work rather than using a migic app. But the magic app is pretty amasing. Thanks.
+Frank Jernigan No kidding. I plan to do a few more from there. Maybe I'll see you up there one time - or at the Whitewater center (I'm there every day when the water is one).
cool video. am looking into some time-lapse equipment now. Always been drawn to TL. The search continues for which slider...which dolly. Which motion controller. So many options.
I think if you change the exposure(maybe slightly change the shutter speed) once over every couple of frames it should be fine. You have to remember that if the raw is slightly under or over exposed thats fine cuz you can fix that in Lightroom or whtvr. So I think if you be careful you can avoid flickering.
If this has already been asked I apologize, but I didn't want to read all 251 comments. Could Michelle have brought hers into LR Time-lapse even though she used aperture priority and achieved the same results, without having to manually adjust the settings?
Yes it would but that would entail some major changes and why not just use LRT. Just because you don't use the other functions, for whatever reason, you think everyone else should be restricted to your vision??? or lack there of. Give your head a shake.
Peter Curley Well maybe it needs some major changes. If you seriously are concerned about Lightroom's shocking interpretation of it's other functions then maybe you should be shaking your head in shame.
very nice information helps me alot about time lapse , i am cinematographer and will do my first professional time lapse soon .. Thank you again . and you prefer manual mode for time lapse right ?
Was your camera plugged into an external power supply? The Micro USB plugin that came with My HX400V does not support Recording and charging and I can't find a forum anywhere, where someone has done this, just wondering if you did and what did you use.
How did you got that 3d google earth look, I tried 2d and 3d but all what I got is a flat map. I couldn't get full look of my city skylines like the one you had.
Thank you so much for creating this complete and elaborate go-to very comprehensive time-lapse tutorial ! I was looking for something like this for a very long time. Definitely going to use LRTL from now on, seems so right. I wanted to ask for your advice / input on how to apply all of this in a day to night TL I am planning this weekend in the desert. Will aperture priority still work? I mean ISO and exposure time will change dramatically...Starting from just before sunset going to complete darkness, I will finish at about 30 sec exposure to make sure I get the stars and the milkyway...so it is a little different from the city scenario... Thanks in advance and please keep up this amazing work !
LR Timelapse....I downloaded the trial version and it IS intimidating for sure lol.....Especially the back and forward actions between Lightroom and LR Timelapse dazzles my brain. I understand now why they call this the "Holy Grail Timelapse" because it's not only the final result but also the long road you need to walk in order to get to it. I read there are also holy grail timelapse motion controls that automatically increase exposure times for you. This way you avoid the flickering right? And you can just use Lightroom and Apple Quick Time PRO right after the colour correcting and merge all single files into the final video....
+Lutte Kikker - well, there are many ways to get your end result. Give yourself 2 or 3 hours and I think you can master this. I tried to walk you through it with a slightly different approach than Gunther. His tutorials are GREAT though, but sometimes you need a different take on it. Watch both and I think you're set. Oh, and those automatice controls are nice, but not necessary. You can get rid of flicker in LRtimelapse.
I am watching this in after 6 years and still find it really helpful!
I bought a Sony a6000 last year and have just discovered time lapse. OMG you guys have stunning results. very inspiring, I have only scratched the surface!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a lot to learn but with your channel I am going to get there :-))))))

Thanks for the nice tutorial. I already use LRTimelapse, but watching you reinforces the technique. Thanks for taking the time to share!
Super! Thankyou very much. Nicely produced video and put together. Good post tips too. Nice work.

Your channel is so great! I am referring to this channel to make a slightly strange time-lapse movie
Just getting started with time lapses. You guys rock! Really! The best set of tutorials I've seen so far. I hope you don't stop posting new videos:)

+iFootballHD Thanks man! Really appreciate the comment. Love your demo video too! Man you have put some hard work into that one! Good stuff!
Cheers mate! Can't wait to see more videos from your channel!

in one word ...Stunning

This tutorial is very handful!
Needs more views!
love the video man! I also live in Charlotte and it was really awesome to see that time lapse! I've shot on that parking deck
+Mario Bianco Awesome! It's a great parking deck. Maybe we'll cross paths one day! I live right next to the whitewater center and paddle there almost every day.

Amazing video tutorials!!! Thank you for doing that!!! Appreciate your time
+Dmitry Khazhinov - Thanks. Great stuff yourself. Subscribed. Looking forward to more vids.
I have started a channel (not this channel I'm commenting with) to do slow motions, cinematics and timelapses. I love your content. Thank you for the content. I can't believe you only have 21k subs
Thanks!!! - sleep mo video huh? Sounds cool.
Rob & Jonas' Filmmaking Tips sleep mo?? Lol.
Is that an actual film technique?
Eerh.. Rob, get some sleep before you answer more comments today... (from Jonas) Thanks Milosz Lech! :-)
Rob & Jonas' Filmmaking Tips oh lol
+milosz lech That's what I get trying to type a comment as the flight attendant was standing over my shoulder to get off my phone. (slow mo) - R
Live only about an hour from the CLT area, great footage of the city!

I thought this was an amazing tutorial thank you!
I don't even have a laptop but I just love watching you
Thank you for this informative video, I did learn a lot, in the very near future, I'm going to do a time lapse video like yours using my Gopro 5. Again thank you, you have great videos.
Thank you Rob, I'm not quite sold on LRTimelapse yet but, maybe I'll try it later. I've subscribed and thanks again for your time.
keep up the good work sir
this shit is simply fkin DOPE .. well done you photo gods ..
Really enjoy your work thank you ❤
It took 3 hours to shoot and at least 3 hours to post process. The processing only takes time because each step can be slow for the computer.
+Rob & Jonas' Filmmaking Tips What happened to your dock at 15:50 ?
+Frayme - LRtimelapse was creating a bunch of files ... I don't know - it does that.
What made you so angry that you kicked your tripod?
What software did you use? Can Adobe Premier pro do this?
how much pictues did you take ?
Next time your in LA please bring me along. Good job! ... Pace was cool with me.
great stuff thanks for sharing
Thanks this was a great tutorial and intro this awesome software! I hope you saved that awesome footage by correcting for the bump in post :)
excellent tutorial!
very interesting video, thanks
beautiful, amazing video.
nice tutorial guys

kick the tripod! thank you for sharing!
its a great video.. thanks
Finally~ Thanks
+tingtingking7 :) Took me awhile, but I knew people wanted it. - R
Pretty cool. Im around this area. I want to do shots like this in the city
Wow I live in Charlotte too, i have also been on top of that same parking garage to see the fire works and do a semi long exposure for the fireworks.
+Frank Jernigan No kidding. I plan to do a few more from there. Maybe I'll see you up there one time - or at the Whitewater center (I'm there every day when the water is one).
+Rob & Jonas' Filmmaking Tips Do you know Thomas Mardany? He said he knows you because you kayak and so does he.
+Frank Jernigan I do. He's probably at today's slalom session (I skipped out because it's a tad cold for me today).
Thank you so much for this tutorial, very helpfull;) - Now, all we have to do is wait for the "tripod-kicker-antiflicker" ;) Well done!
Awesome!
thanks for this video ....mann !!!!!

For the "True Holly Grail Methode" I suggest you check out QDSLRDashboard. It has a LRTimelapse program.
Big hart from Saudi Arabia
I love LRTimelapse :-)

realy cool!!!
Would be nice if Lightroom had this built into it, and scrap the Map/Book/Slideshow/Print/Web functions. Who uses them anyway?
Yes it would but that would entail some major changes and why not just use LRT. Just because you don't use the other functions, for whatever reason, you think everyone else should be restricted to your vision??? or lack there of. Give your head a shake.
