Kathy Bates has said in numerous interviews that this performance is the one she's most proud of. I would have to agree with her that it's one of the best.
For a book that has maybe the most wonderfully developed tone of voice for a character I've ever read, Kathy Bates IS Dolores Claiborne. There can be no one else.
@@matthewsteinmetz729 Stephen King actually wrote the book with Miss Bates in mind. No wonder it’s her greatest work yet!
I would love to see them react to all of the seasons Kathy Bates is in American horror story❤❤😊😊😊
Kathy is one of those few in Hollywood with actual talent. It isn't about her looks or her eccentric lifestyle but actual talent. Take anything she's in and try to have someone else perform it and they'll never match.
For Stephen King to write a novel for Kathy Bates and for her to star in it is such a beautiful thing to do. And I miss watching this with my Mom.
Dolores: I got another surprise for you Joe. You know the money in Selena's bank account?
Joe: Uh, yeah
Dolores: You took it.
A God damn tease? Really Joe St. George? You're egotistical pervert. You go Dolores.
The scene where Selena has that repressed memory on the ferry with her father as he forced her to put her hand god knows where. Then her whole world starts to spin around. @26:26 is my favorite shot ever where she looks in the mirror and sees the back of her head. Sooooo good!!!!
One of my favorite stories by Stephen King. Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh just chew up the scenery in this film. David Straitharn did a fantastic job as the abusive father. To this day when I see him in other movies I immediately think of this performance. Stephen King once again proves he’s one of the greatest storytellers of all time.
That park bench scene still haunts me because it's just so fucked up. But acting like you said was top notch.
@@KonohazFinest
What is the park bench scene? I have seen this film a dozen times i cannot recall a park bench scene. was this a deleted scene or in a directors cut i have not heard of ?
@@USCFlash when he has her give him a hand job is disturbing and I know there actors but I couldn't do that kind of scene.
@@KonohazFinest
They are on a ferry though, between the island & the mainland....not in a park.
THat is why she has the flashback on the ferry, when she is leaving the island & buys the coffee.
She remembers her dad buying a coffee & cocoa when they were on the ferry then him molesting her.
@@USCFlash yes your right it's been a long time since I seen this movie.
This is easily my favorite of all the films made of Stephen King novels. Kathy Bates' performance is incredible, and she absolutely nails the Maine accent.
Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance is remarkable. She is seen in torment, carrying a silent burden for years. This movie is a masterpiece. Of course Stephen King's book provides the perfect setting to show humanity with all the good and all the bad.
This is my favorite King novel. There are a few supernatural elements in the novel that weren't included in the movie. Dolores has a vision during the eclipse that connects to Gerald's Game (another King novel) and Dolores and Vera seem to have a slight psychic connection at times. I highly recommend checking out the audio book read by Frances Sternhagen (the actress that plays the sarcastic Sheriff's wife/deputy in Misery) - it's just fantastic. There is also much more horror in the novel with Vera having terrible hallucinations and Joe not dying from his initial fall. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse I always dreamed of having a mother like Dolores Claiborne who would do anything to protect her children. Love your channel!
They should react to Gerald's game adaptation if they haven't.
@@6alcantara directed by Mike Flanagan
Frances Sternhagen’s reading of it is superb!!
Stephen King short stories translate well to the screen. Wonderful film. Kathy Bates is a wonderful actress.
Dolores Claiborne and Gerald’s Game both have pivotal events that happened during the same eclipse. In the novels, the main characters see each other briefly during the eclipse. Gerald’s Game has a fantastic adaptation as well, which I never thought was possible. Worth watching.
Thank Mike Flanagan. He also did Doctor Sleep and he is now developing a TV adaptation of "The Dark Tower" (which shows a bit more promise than that terrible movie we got back in 2018).
@@jbvader721 I’m a huge King fan and I have never made it through the 4th Dark Tower book. Just can’t do it.
Kathy Bates is brilliant. Her accents are damn near perfect. Best non-supernatural Stephen King films are The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me
Dolores Claiborne has a companion novel: Gerald's Game. they both have scenes that take place during that eclipse. Gerald's Game was made into a movie on Netflix...worth a watch
Yes I have read the book and watch the movie Mike flannigan did a great job
there is something about that eclipse, in both geralds and this a father molests a daughter
Dolores Claiborne has always been one of my favourites but I never knew that Gerald's Game was a companion I'll definitely watch it now! Thank you for that info.
Kathy did a really good job in this film. Christopher Plummer was actually one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, his reputation for acting in any role given such as Tolstoy is unparalleled. liked Kathy's performance in Misery.
Ellen Muth, the actress playing young Selena is from my town in Connecticut. When the movie came out, she was signing autographs at a video store just up the road. I expected a bit of a crowd, but there were only a couple people there. I was nervous and couldn't really think of anything to ask her, but she was very sweet. I think I also passed her at the mall a couple years later, but by the time it registered on me, she had already disappeared.
Her father owned (or managed) the optometrist store where I used to go for my glasses. On one occasion, her brother waited on me. Which I only know because they had her picture up and when I asked if she was a customer, he told me that she was his sister, and that their father owned/managed the store.
She went on to star in the Showtime series Dead Like Me for two seasons, and one made for video movie.
Dolores does mention Shawshank Prison just before her husband died. Stephen King books/films are normally centred around Maine.
The other Kathy Bates film in the loose trilogy is Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe,if you haven't seen it is definitely worth a reaction from you both.
Love your commentaries especially The Sopranos 🤩🙌👍
I love fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe
@@angelaholmes8888 There is a restaurant I'm Juliette, Georgia where Fried Green Tomatoes was really filmed. The restaurant is in the same restaurant in the film. It's really good. It's called The Whistle Stop;)
the Young actress is played by Ellen Muth.. she starred on the television show Dead Like Me. I believe it was only three seasons but it was my favorite at the time. Mandy Patinkin is in it too. it would be a great series for you to react to. also you can never go wrong with Stephen King this is a great reaction.
YES. Loved that show. It's their kind of weirdness.
Thanks for the recommendation...
Anything with Mandy Patinkin is a Go in my book !!
@@hastingscutoff1304 don't forget Kiffany
Such an underrated film. Both Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh are awesome. But it is sad that not many people know about this movie.
Yeah it's weird that this movie isn't well known like misery and shawshank redemption
"DC" is my favourite above all, its pain goes into my bones each time I see it. The Hours" comes next. 💙
There’s a 90’s miniseries called “Storm Of The Century” that takes place in the same town of Littletall island. They name drop Dolores in the show. Stephen King wrote it for TV and later released it as a book. It’s one of my favorite stories from King and it’s free on RUclips. It’s like 4 hours long.
SonOfAGun I have been searching for this movie since I saw the miniseries when it aired. I've been trying to show it to people.
Tha k You
This movie surprised the hell out of me when I saw it in the theater years ago. Kathy Bates was so so good. And let's not forget Jennifer Jason Leigh and David Strathairn. Fantastic movie.
So there is actually another King story loosely connected to this called Gerald's Game. Mike Flanagan even directed the movie adaption.
This is one of my all time favorite Stephen King adaptations. I love that you two reviewed this one because it definitely deserves to be seen more.
Speaking of connections to other Stephen King works, the eclipse in this movie also figures into Gerald's Game, both the novel and Mike Flanagan's film adaptation he did for Netflix which is well worth checking out.
Both the book and the movie are understated masterpieces. Real literature that depends on the replaying of aphorisms in the light of memory and experience. Every event and statement is revised and replayed until the accident becomes the inevitable. Story not as a set of plot-points but the interpretation of a life. The detail of Dolores’ raw hands hanging washing out in the winter cold still stays with me after two decades. This is an Edith Wharton-level ordeal.
Dolores mentions Shawshank prison, the fictional locale of another Stephen King story. Interestingly, Bob Gunton, the actor who plays the warden in Shawshank Redemption, is also in this film, playing the bank manager.
Yes! Somebody finally recognized Christopher Plummer! I’m so glad I found your channel today and can’t wait to see more content of yours. I was doing reactions for Kathy Bates and this is my favorite of hers. She is absolutely wonderful in every season she is in American horror story. Sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida.
Dolores Claiborne is one of my all-time favorite movies - I can't tell you how many times I have watched and re-watched and re-watched and re-watched it! All the performances in that movie are top-notch and I can't believe that this movie is so underrated. Applause for all the actors
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Such a great film. The only thing I disliked was the ending, with Dolores apparently staying on that island where everybody thinks she killed her husband and now thinks she killed Vera Donovan (the police might've dropped the charges, but public opinion is a lot harder to change). She has nobody left and is hated and badmouthed by everyone there, including the children. Though I guess it's par for the course for a Stephen King story, with no real "happy" ending.
You'll feel a little better after reading the book.
Could it try to be an homage to Lizzie Borden's case? It sounds quite similar to the "Ending" of that case
Ehh, she can buy some friends.
Book had a happier (kinda) ending.
My late wife and I saw this movie together. It brought back suppressed memories she had. Took a couple of years of therapy to get it all out of her and to be able to deal with it. Amazingly afterward she was a new woman. LIke a huge gorilla was off her back. She passed away 5 years later at 49. I was happy she had found peace from the situation.
Actually, there is another Stephen King book called Gerald's Game, which was also made into a movie that is linked to Dolores. Claireborne. Both lead females experienced traumatic events in their pasts on the day of the eclipse. They are also somehow psychically linked.
Thé reference to thé dime on a string meant exactly what it said.. they used fo have pay toilets, they cost $0.25 to use, Delores was suggested he was so cheap he attached a string to the quarter and pulled it back out once the door opened…
It's funny how things hit you.
Watching your reaction, we got to the scene where Dolores's daughter goes up to see her... he tells Dolores "It's your daughter". Cathy Bates turns around and I burst into tears (almost...) because she looked _so much_ as I remember my own mother looking at that age.
And I remember watching this movie with her, and how much she liked it.
The actress that plays Vera was damn good too. Hell, the entire cast.
I want to mention Judy parfitt as Vera Donovan she was stealing the scenes also when she was on the screen ,thanks to have done Dolores Claiborne this was a great reaction
My grandmother WAS Delores! I read the book before seeing the movie and always visualized my Mawmaw. Kathy Bates absolutely lived up to my expectations.☺
British actress Judy Parfitt is also brilliant as Vera Donovan and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, which she should have had.
I love this movie and I really liked Vera and Delores' friendship.
I loooove this movie. Underrated entirely! I know it's won some awards but people still sleep on it.
So glad you guys got around to this! A seriously underrated film ✨ apparently like many commenters I have a weird attachment to it, I watched it several times with my parents, while my siblings were out doing normal kid things. I remember loving how dark and moving it was, and how special it felt that my parents loved the same things I did and often ignored a movie’s age rating if they thought it was something I’d like 😅 the benefits of being the youngest, I guess.
Also shoutout to Judy Parfitt, I think this is among her best performances and the phrase ‘high-riding b*tch’ has stuck with me forever 😅
Judy Parfitt gives such a powerful performance
Kathy Bates is a phenomenal actress. Every role she does is a masterpiece. This one I think is her best movie yet. 👏
She is a joy to watch
Love her so!
This was one of my moms and grandmas favorite movies. I remember coming home from school many days with this on the TV.
I usually watch Horror and Black American films however this movie was incredibly captivating. The relationship between Delores and Vera was astounding. I appreciate your reactions. I am binge watching all of tnem
No matter how brief or prominent
her appearances, no matter what genre
or forum & no matter who she's playing,
Jennifer Jason Leigh frequently steals
the show. She's got quite an extensive,
impressive filmography & has worked
with most of the celebrated directors in film--
Paul Verhoeven
Quentin Tarantino
Amy Heckerling
Ron Howard
David Cronenberg
Robert Altman
The Coen Brothers
Christopher Guest
Todd Solondz
She also co-wrote/co-directed & co-starred
in "The Anniversary Party" with Alan Cumming.
I think it's safe to say that the acting in this movie was marvelous by each actor and actress! 🎉👏🏼👏🏼
Jennifer Jason Leigh has acting chops for days. Last Exit To Brooklyn, Hateful Eight, Twin Peaks, Rush. So many amazing performances by her.
All round great acting. Kathy Bates' jibes are so funny, too.
the lady playing Vera was sensational! loved her too
Thanks Kristian! Great reco. I haven't seen this one in years but it's an old favourite.
Thank you SO much for doing this movie!! One of my all time favorites! Love your reactions and game plays!! 💜💜💜
The novel was written, then when they decided to make it a movie, Kathy Bates was chosen for the part after being so impressive in Misery. The novel wasn't written for Kathy Bates, but they probably had her in mind when the screenplay was written.
Absolutely fantastic movie. A departure from typical King diving into real life horror filled with the brutal reality of the working poor. Kathy Bates remains a gift for viewers.
You, Me, & The Movies Thank you guys for reacting to this underrated gem. Seriously one of my all-time favourite movies. This and "The Mask of Zorro" I feel sooo bad for that they're not talked about enough. Both of them have great acting. Zorro had breath-taking sets n action as well as smashing emotional drama. Now this movie isnt known for big action n stunts like "TMofZ". lol of course not. It's waaay more of a character study indeed with past n present dramatic stories which Zorro had too.
Anyway, with this movie alone...it is probably my favourite Stephen King movie so far. I love Carrie from 1976 n Kubrick's The Shining as well as 1989's Pet Semetary, Stand by Me, Shawshank, The Green Mile, Doctor Sleep, and even the 1990 miniseries of IT. But God help me, "Dolores" screams out number 1 for me. Misery was also impressive as well. Kathy Bates is great in that one but my goodness is she really phenomenal in this one. Not too mention, Leigh is one of my all-time favourite actresses. The score to this movie is perfect and the editing n cinematography is unbelievable. I seriously dig its unique style of either being in the past or the present.
Please react to "Gerald's Game" on Netflix if you 2 havent already.
Keep up the great work u too.
I highly recommend watching "Stand By Me"! Another non-horror Stephen King movie - it's really, Really good!👍😁
Kathy Bates played the radio dj on The Stand as well.
Yup! Just watched their reaction to it last night, go check it out on their other channel, if you haven't already!
This is my favorite King book and movie. Just one of his best stories.
I love everything about the movie. The acting, writing, music, and especially the cinematography. The transition between the drab almost colorless present to the bright vibrant past was genius.
Have you seen Apt Pupil? Another great horror of humanity story from the King.
The acting and a great storyline the Cinematography is supreme as well!
"Bet the last time you were sorry was when you needed to use the pay toilet and the string on your pet dime broke."
It means that he's so frugal/cheap/miserly when it comes to money that he wouldn't even spend a dime to use a pay toilet. (because he'd have the dime on a string so he could pull it out of the mechanism)
Here I sit broken hearted
Paid a dime and only farted
Castle Rock Entertainment wasn't ownd by Ted Turner but Rob Reiner, who directed the already recommended Stand by Me.
The link that you were talking about towards the end is Gerald's Game. In the path of the eclipse.
We had pet dimes and quarters in the 80’s. The coin had a small hole drilled in, and a string was attached. You could insert them into a pay phone, vending machine, arcade game, etc. It would trigger the mechanism, then you would pull in back out by the string.
i distinctly remember that as well. I thought I imagined the whole thing
so good to see this reaction, Stephen King started out as supernatural to true crime stuff. the reference to a pet dime is a trick people used to do with a coin on a string to make a vending machine think it got a coin.
You missed out my favourite Dolores insult - Mr Grand High Poo-Bah of Upper Butt Crack.
Thankyou for reacting to this movie ❤️ Jennifer Jason Leigh is such an incredible underrated actress ❤️
She was so good in dirty dancing
I think that was Jennifer grey
She just amazing in Backdraft and the hateful eight.
Yes definitely she was fantastic in backdraft for such a small part in that movie
@@76swilly
She was also in:
"Fast Times At Ridgemont High"

"Flesh & Blood"
"The Hitcher"
"The Big Picture"
"Last Exit To Brooklyn"
"Miami Blues"
"Single White Female"
"Short Cuts"
"The Hudsucker Proxy"
"Mrs. Parker & The Vicious Circle"
"eXistenZ"
"The Machinist"
"In The Cut"
"Margot At The Wedding"
"Palindromes"
"Synecdoche, New York"

I think the link you're thinking about is Gerald's Game, another Stephen King adaptation. both movies feature an eclipse during a flashback and I highly recommend it because it's an excellent movie. Carla Gugino stars in it (she was Olivia in Haunting of Hill House). this is absolutely my favorite Stephen King movie adaptation, not only because of the incomparable Kathy Bates but because of the stunning cinematography throughout. just a stellar piece of filmmaking from top to bottom. thanks for the reaction guys! ❤️
Kathy Bates in A Home of our own❤️❤️
Gotta tip the hat to David Strathairn as Joe,and Judy Parfitt as Vera. Great performances, all around.
Really good movie - The novel is interesting because the whole thing is written as a monologue by Dolores as she's questioned by the police. Not sure how many books are written that way but it was kind of a neat read. I liked it but preferred the movie. Great acting in this flick, too - top shelf!
Fun facts . Most of Stephen King books take place in the same universe. Some books are connected to Stephen King dark tower series directly. Which makes Stephen king the best fantasy/horror writer out there.
Bates best are TITANIC, FAILURE TO LAUNCH, MISERY, and this one.
Nice pick Kristen
Finally thanks Kristian thanks to you guys for reacting to this film!
Gerald's Game. Dolores Claiborne is linked to Stephen King's other novel Gerald's Game (sorry if this has already been covered in the comments). But only the novels, the movies are only connected by the eclipse. For what it is worth, Gerald's Game was also an AMAZING film, and I think you would both enjoy that one, too. Seriously. Similar dramatic themes...but definitely has a little more horror in it. I am so glad that you both enjoyed Dolores Claiborne, though, as it is just such a good film. My best and I friend still quote ALL of her lines. And, if you keep going with Stephen King, PLEASE watch Cujo. Always enjoy your episodes!
Ive watched this film 100
Times. Every year I watch it at least a few times and love it all over again.
See "Stand By Me", "Apt Pupil", "Secret Window", and "Gerald's Game". All of those have either no ties or very limitied ties to the supernatural world.
On the topic of links between Stephen King movies, Sheriff Bannerman in Cujo is supposed to be the same character as in The Dead Zone, although played by different actors in each film.
This is an awesome movie. I've seen in several times. It was set in Maine but filmed in Lunenburg and Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia. The actress playing the teenage Selena is Ellen Muth who was on the series Dead Like Me.
Pay toilets used to cost a dime and if the mechanism was simple enough, you could fool them with that trick. There's a very old English expression for having to pee, "spend a penny," dating back to when pay toilets cost a penny.
So glad you both enjoyed this movie, one of my favorites from Stephen King, Bates & Jason Lee. Between this and Misery, I’d have to say Misery is my absolute favorite. :)
Another movie ( Thriller) to see if you haven’t is, “Single White Female”, starring: Jennifer Jason Leigh& Bridget Fonda.
Leigh.
"Im never a bitch to anyone but you" haha yall are just the best 😁
7:17 - That’s a great point… She may not have started it, but it sure looked like she was about to finish it lol
This movie is criminally under-represented in the movie commentary community.
I went to go watch this movie for the first time in HBO max just to come join in on your reactions to it !
The book/ Netflix film, Gerald's Game, is linked to Dolores Claiborne
Always felt this was very close to Shawshank in feel.
I've been one of Stephen King's Constant Readers since I was a kid. I get really annoyed when people write him off as a "horror writer." Another term critics and literary snobs throw around as a backhanded compliment is that "he's such a great storyteller." They can't bring themselves to just say he's a great writer. Well, he is. On top of the legendary horror novels he's written such as Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand, The Dead Zone, etc., he also has given us The Body (Stand by Me), Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Eyes of the Dragon, The Dark Tower Series, The Running Man, Lisey's Story, Dolores Claiborne, Bag of Bones, and one of the greatest and most important books about his craft that also serves as a sort of autobiography, On Writing.
He is a prolific author who can write in any genre. He's the Charles Dickens of our time.
what the running man with Arnold, that film was written from Stephen King?
@@Pazuzu82 Yes. He wrote the novel under his Pseudonym Richard Bachman.
One reason his horror works so well is that it’s almost always tied to real-life horror: the adolescent cruelty in Carrie; family violence in The Shining and Dolores Claiborne; etc, etc.
"other than you" marriage summed up in one statement.
Favourite film. Should have been Oscar contending.
You should watch Jennifer Jason Leigh with Jason Patrick in the 1991 film "RUSH"
This was a brilliant movie and I loved all of the character building and acting performances including Vera. Seems like most of the sarcastic wittiness of Delores went right over both of you guys heads, but I personally felt that Kathy Bates gave a grand slam performance from top to bottom.
Great movie! Kathy Bates is one of my fave actors!
Check out "Stand By Me", an adaptation of a non-supernatural Stephan King short story "The Body" which is in a book of his short stories that includes "Shawshank Redemption.
@you, me & the movies. I'm pretty sure the above is spam.
You two should definitely have a look at 'Cujo' (1983). A fantastic non supernatural Stephen King film.
Love this movie! You should check out his movie Apt Pupil with Ian McKellan and Brad Renfro!
This is the best movie I never wanted to watch. I learned about this movie, as well as "'night, Mother" (Sissy Spacek, Anne Bancroft), during awards season in '85/'86. I watched both, then bought both. They are still in my top 10 favorites of all time.
"'night, Mother" is based on
a Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
One of the stars of the play was...
Kathy Bates!!
A really neat thing about this movie is that the original book could never just be directly made into a movie, so this script completely reorganizes the whole thing to focus on Dolores' relationship with her daughter in the present.
Another Cathy Bates movie worth checking out is Fried Green Tomatoes. Some of the same beats that are in this movie. For another Stephen King movie I would suggest the Dead Zone. Christopher Walken puts forth a wonderful performance in it for sure.
I love that movie so much. Cathy is a treasure to the craft.
This is one of my mother's favourite films and I also like it alot. Very good and gripping story.
Cool cool cool! You might now want to check on Gerald's Game (2017) too. Not remotely as good as this one, but still pretty enjoyable. And both stories are slightly connected (companion novels).
Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh at their utmost best.
Love this movie.
I know I already left a comment lol But as a huge King fan, just wanted to answer your question regarding which stories are linked to this one.
Two things:
1. Technically, most (if not all) King stories are connected, as they take place in the same universe (though not always in the same realm or reality. I'm not gonna say more on that so as to avoid spoilers)
2. There is 1 story that is directly connected, thematically and literally, to this one, and that is Gerald's Game. Which was made into a movie for Netflix by someone you may have heard of...Mike Flanagan 😋
That one is pretty upsetting, but is well done. It doesn't connect through characters, but through events that are referenced in both stories.
I'm happy you acknowledged the Maine accent....Ayuh! :)
