The Reinvention of Jan. 6

- Since the riot on Capitol Hill four years ago, President-elect Donald Trump and his allies have set out to sanitize the events of that day, changing it from a day of violence into, in Mr. Trump’s words, a day of love.
As he prepares to take office for his second term, Mr. Trump said he plans to issue pardons to some of those responsible, throwing hundreds of criminal cases into doubt.
Alan Feuer, a reporter covering extremism and political violence for The New York Times, talks to one of those rioters and explains how the pardons could help rewrite the story of what happened on Jan. 6.
Guest: Alan Feuer (www.nytimes.co...) , a reporter covering extremism and political violence for The New York Times.
Background reading:
• How Mr. Trump inverted the violent history of Jan. 6 (www.nytimes.co...) .
• Hundreds of rioters accused of nonviolent crimes during the attack on the Capitol have wrapped up their cases. Here’s what some of their lives look like now (www.nytimes.co...) .

You can't tell me these people didn't know they were breaking the law. The Vietnamese man even admits that.
they were ushered into the building . in any case the punishment doesn't fit the crime
@@007kingifrit Riiight, they must have been smashing windows, climbing walls, and assaulting police in an attempt to get *out*, eh? 🙄
Talk about a victim mentality, he's got it 100%. But the amount of Miss and disinformation these people are consuming is unbelievable. It's just so easy to make a human do the wrong thing.
@@007kingifritperhaps at 1 or more particular entrance(s)/exit(s), but surely you have clearly seen the audio/visual unadulterated/ undoctored evidence and proof that there were people who broke windows and beat/physically assaulted law enforcement officers attempting to secure entrances by verbal orders and physical force. Unfortunately, in the USA, you do not have the right to defend yourself from the physical force applied by law enforcement. Physical assault is a crime none of us want to be victims of anymore than excessive force police brutality. So in what political philosophies/systems do people get no penalties or accountability for? Is it ok if, let's just say for instance, 0.1% or even 0.01% can be allowed to behave that way without any accountability or even a commitment to change, let alone admit what happened and be remorseful!?

"Yes i do."
Breathtaking delusions.
It will probably come true
If you don't think that's how things are going to go then there's no hope for you. Even if Trump lost the 2024 election, history is still going to remember the 2020 election as being stolen, regardless of if it was or not.
@@kabuki7038 weird.
not likely in regards to history. that just isnt how history works. folklore works that way.
the delusion here is entirely on the people who believe that it was stolen, or that jan 6 was a peaceful tour of the capital. they may or may not persist in their delusions, history ultimately tends against those delusions lasting, as they require effort to maintain, but them maintaining their delusional state doesnt actually effect the history. either as a factual matter, nor even in terms of what the history books teach.
@@kabuki7038 Only those who are MAGA Republican hacks, their partisans and whoever believes such nonsense. With the Democrats in the Presidency they didn't steal the 2024 election. No election fraud and electoral fraud or voter fraud conspiracies now. Trump supposedly (Starlink!?) won the Presidency by the same margin of the popular vote Hillary outgained Trump, but she lost the Electoral College vote. Neo-liberal economics still rules the day and the status quo only gets worst for the 99% of us. A bunch of people who actually care are stuck in a Boeing 666 Uniparty plane with both wings on fire.

NYT is known for doxxing sources/informants and even their own (former)reporters, am I Right!? Any fact checkers still on the clock!?
Why doesn't this guy think about the broader treatment of protestors of all kinds. The thing is, whether they did violence or not, they were trespassing in the nation's capital. They don't realize that in places like Minneapolis, hundreds of protestors were arrested for trespassing and vandalizing among other things. That was in the city, buildings etc. Now think about how it was the nation's capital, the seat of government. Its a big deal.
@imalloutagum6083 How does one trespass in the People's house? You can't trespass on public property...
The cops let a lot of them in
@@adtastic1533 oh, yeah. Right after the front line of hundreds of people broke through the bulk of the police force, many of whom were beaten. The few cops that were left in the building that weren't barricaded with capital workers, let the hundreds of people who had just beaten their fellow officers and broken in, go past them. I wonder why? Had to be a left wing conspiracy. No way it was just because they were completely outnumbered and didn't want to get beaten, it can't be that simple.
Liberals cheered on the BLM riots and conservatives cheered on the January 6th riots, the whole thing seems pretty understandable to me. Everyone cheered for the violence that they believed furthered their own cause and politics, I don't really see the need to make moral arguments about such an obvious situation.
@@maknavickas Liberals cheered the death of innocent people, burned down neighborhoods, and reveled in the power of intimidating the average American over years, big difference. I cant think of a single American city that was occupied by armed insurgents like CHOP/CHAZ, by the conservatives...

I think that the basis of democracy is "ballots not bullets". In other words, citizens of a nation have the collective fairness and generosity to believe that the elected representatives of the people should govern, not the leaders of the military who physically have the ability to govern. This is a very new, radical idea which historically has not been typical of human society. American society may be turning away from this concept.
What do you think of the regulations of the unelected bureaucrats of the administrative state? Most people who preach the virtues of "elected representatives" tend to also be in favor of them.
@ShankarSivarajan I would say that the US is and has always been an imperfect democracy but people seem to just accept that. So long as the government doesn't wreck their own lives they don't care.
The only bullet was fired by armed security who shot & killed Ashli Babbit while she posed no threat other than entering through a broken transom window. She could have easily been arrested. The cops meanwhile, armed to the teeth with assault rifles, did nothing and were milling on the steps with 25 protesters holding selfie sticks ten feet from Babbitt's body. You need to clear your head of the bs.
@@ShankarSivarajan Congress has the power to fire those bureaucrats.

I agree that the Jan 6 people should be charged, but it is interesting that the this episode did not cover the national riots that the Democrats had encouraged before this event.
We don’t talk about that, ever
Do you mean the riots after the George Floyd incident? The riots in which many were arrested and prosecuted?
Maybe because that’s totally unrelated, not remotely comparable, and not true?
@chrisray1567 Democrats promoted the BLM riots that killed 20 people and caused billions in property damage, during an election with the intention to sway the results of that forthcoming election. Even if you believe that J6 was a Republican lead insurrection you have to acknowlegde that Democrats did one first.

That's a lame place 2 end that story
By vested ruling 2-3 castes people constituting 15% of total Indian population of India has for century mastered the art of dividing and ruling over 80% of unorganised indian population. These people spread & promote hatred among various castes in this unorganised 80% sector through their controlled leading newspapers, TV news channels, social media, false rumours, job discrimination etc, selectively pitching one caste against another especially against those who raise voice against injustice committed by the ruling 2-3 castes who also occupy all important positions in bureaucracy & judiciary.
I can't say if it is fully correct People say in north india the casteist daily newspapers which promote hatred among various castes in india are Hindustan Times, Times of India, Hindu, Tribune, Jagran etc

In the definition given by the youtube censors above, what us a self-coup d’etat? How does that make any sense?
A self-coup is just a coup where they illegally retain the current political leader instead of installing a new one. Literally what Jan 6 was about.
