I’m trying to learn a trumpet now but omg the amount of air you need… I literally had the mouthpiece and was blowing in it for a while, desperately trying to play the same note the whole time, but then halfway I got so dizzy and almost fell 😭 be careful guys lmao

As a reed player trying to learn trumpet as a Hobbie. All you had to say was buzzing not blowing and I immediately got a little better 😂

I guess the buzzing has something to do with the lip shape. The guy's lips look really flat but mine are triangular and can't buzz properly. I guess it requires a lot of practice because mine really doesn't sound like his so I'm probably doing it wrong.

A fun challenge for yourself is to pick a song - something simple like 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' and see if you can 'play' it on just the mouthpiece.

I'm still confused on this concept. I'm learning but I have been playing the clarinet for 4 years and the saxophone for 1 year. So I wanna learn the trumpet for drum core. I'm confused on how to buzz

I'm playing the trumpet for about 8 years now and I still can't properly buzz without the instrument. I never really practised it, because it doesn't cause any problems in my playing. Is this skill important?

It's not something you'll do every day, but it is helpful as a practice tool. If you can buzz a song with just your lips, for example, you will have much better accuracy when you apply the buzz to the trumpet. Start with something simple, like "Mary Had a Little Lamb", then work your way up to more difficult selections like "Yankee Doodle" or "The Star-Spangled Banner". This will especially help in your upper register where the partials get closer together.
As a side benefit, buzzing without the instrument or mouthpiece should improve the amount of pressure you're using when you play.

You absolutely have to "blow hot air". It's the air that moves the lips after all. It is a BLOW not a BUZZ.

    • @StephenDoty84

Yes, one can blow and not buzz, then use the mouthpiece with the same form and make it sound. So free buzzing is not essential, it seems, so long as you can get a buzz from the mouthpiece without it.

And explain the sound? Does it sound like a blow or a buzzing sound

You can try doing a 'motor boat' sound, then just shrinking the buzz. I found this is easiest to do in a swimming pool or bath tub. 🎺
