  • 👋 After buying the new 2024 Audi RS3, and filming a ton of the BMW M340i sport sedans over the years. We have seen plenty of comments of other buyers cross shopping these two cars! Both the 2024 Audi RS3 and 2024 BMW M340i can be bought for about $65,000. Son in todays video I compare the M340i to the RS3! Overall both cars have an inline turbocharged engine, all wheel drive and are good sized sedans. The BMW has RWD available along with xDrive. The RS3 only comes with Quattro AWD. The RS3 packs a 5 cylinder engine with 401 horsepower and 369 torque, while the M340i has a 6 cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 torque. the RS3 is a faster car with a tested 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds while the xDrive M340i is a half second slower at 3.7 seconds. The M340i is a slightly larger car with about an inch or two more legroom and head room. However I do fit in the back seat of the RS3 behind my driver seat set for me. The RS3 is more of an exciting car with the dual clutch transmission. It handles sharper and feels more mechanical and raw. RS3 reminds me a lot of my old R35 Nissan GTR and honestly feels like a BMW M3 but in a smaller more affordable package. The BMW M340i felt a lot softer. More of a luxury sedan that also has a powerful engine, while the RS3 feels like a performance sedan that also has luxury aspect. So these cars are not direct competitors even tho they cost the same and can do the same 4 door sedan things. RS3 is a full on performance car with excitement at its top priority. M340i can feel like a basic 3 series when driving normal. The RS3 never tones down that much. It still has aggressive brakes and a more mechanical transmission. Power deliver is more aggressive to on the RS3. BMW M34i is very smooth around town and offers an easy to drive experience while the RS3 feels a bit more on edge in slow speeds. SO I think if you want a super excited sports car that also has back seats, the RS3 is the winner! I'd love a BMW M3, but at $90,000, thats just out of budget. And coming from the R35 GTR, the RS3 gives me the perfect blend of excitement and practicality form the GTR and M3 all in a more affordable fun to drive sedan. The BMW M340i is for the buyer who just wants a nice roomy mid sized sedan, but a 4 cylinder wont cut it! If you want all of that with a good powerful engine and fun handling, the M340i might suite you better.

    Nice review and I would think it’s probably difficult to seem impartial reviewing a vehicle along with your own that you would be most used to. I’d tend to lean towards the BMW but I’m at a place where I’d go for a performance sedan with a bit more refinement. Although I will agree with you regarding placing an M3 at the top of that list.😅

  • @tdogg8291
    @tdogg8291 6 месяцев назад +6

    They both look like nice cars honestly. It really comes down to what you said. Are you looking for a luxury sedan with some sportiness or a bit smaller sedan with still luxury but much more performance focused. I actually think these two cars compare really well against each other even though they aren't supposed to. Comes down to which is preferred on your list: performance over size, or size over performance. I'm looking between these two right now and I'm leaning more rs3. I value performance over a bit more size and roomy inside. Just watching you drive them back to back brought a smile seeing and HEARING the rs3 compared to the m340i. I think I'm taking the rs3 😎

    Did you drive the m340i in sport plus? Really wakes the car up compared to even regular sport mode. The sweet spot due to depreciation is a used m340i. I have a 2020. It’s the best daily driver for my family of four due to the big back seat, x drive, multiple personalities, and cost. This coming from previous m2, e92 m3, macan gts, and a4. This one is my favorite. Can’t go wrong with the rs3 either but it is more compromised as a daily driver imo.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  7 месяцев назад +15

      Yes as shown in the first part of the test drive. Sport + isn't anything compared to RS Performance mode tho. RS3 is s big step up in performance and just feels way more lively. I've driven a ton of the M340i cars. Great cars overall, but the RS3 has the true hard core performance feeling like the M3 offers. But in a more affordable package.
      A good used M340 is a great deal for sure! RS3 is a fine daily it's just a bit more rough around the edges in the slow speeds with the more performance focused brakes and transmission. It's more like daily driving the M3. M340 is a good well rounded option for sure!
      After owning the R35 GTR we love how the RS3 offers that kind of feel but with more practical seats. And since I can still fit in the back seats, that's all we needed. Fun cars for sure! Just different uses.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  7 месяцев назад +1

      Both are cool cars for sure! I'd say the M240 is a step up. That 6 cylinder gives it much better power and a smoother delivery than the 4 cylinder. Gold R is super toss bale those and very nice to see out of. So could be the better city car. M240 is probably more fun in the mountains with its lower center of gravity and more planted for high speed turns. Very different cars for sure. I'd go M240i because of the B58 engine and coupe design

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed thank you for responding!
      Great feedback. Surprisingly the monthly repayments for both cars here in AU end up being materially similar If you can negotiate the price on the m240i.
      It is just me and my partner so no kids for now and coupe should suit our lifestyle so I’m not worried over that. However I keep thinking if Golf R would be simply a more fun car to drive in tight city corners under allowed speed limits. While the m240i could only be fun if you go high speeds which we really don’t have here in AU and I imagine it will feel less playful in corners compared to the Golf.
      At the same time it feels silly to get Golf over BMW given everything else is better in well specced 2 series … Would you say m240i with adaptive suspension would be a more comfortable ride? Also I reckon golf R will hold the value better over years compared to quickly depreciating m240i unfortunately.

    I think the M2 is a better comparison except for the 4 doors. Ok question, I had a Golf R and no matter what I did, I could never get it to feel RWD (of course not) or ever AWD. Well, unless it was wet and I was being stupid. How is the RS3 different?
    For me, being pushed is way better than being pulled.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah the M2 is much more on par with the RS3 on a performance level. But we've had a lot of comments of people cross shopping these two for similar price point sedans. If I have access to another M2 I'll definitely do a comparison.
      The Golf R will always feel like a FWD vehicle. Cars like that, even with AWD never feel like anything else. STI and Focus RS always felt FWD to me as well. RS3 feels AWD all day long and has a rear biased mode as well for more tail happy driving. Being a big next step up car, it gives you that better feeling

      The new mk8 R and 8Y RS3 has a new rear diff that changed the handling and trackability of the platform. The RS3 even revised the suspension geometry and made the tires wider to handle better. RS3 also adopted the R's adaptive damper and dropped the mag ride.

    While the cars are pretty similar on paper in many ways and they will be cross shopped, they are fundamentally different cars from the ground up.
    Makes sense since they are in a different class.
    The B9.5 S4 would be closer to the M340i as a whole given that the S4 directly competes with the M340i.
    The 8Y S3 directly competes with the Bmw M235i gran coupe and Bmw doesn’t have anything higher in that class so the RS3 is left to compete with the CLA45 Amg.
    The 2 series coupe might be in that class in terms of size, but it’s still quite different and is more of a smaller 4 series.
    Whereas the A3 lineup isn’t just a smaller A4. The engine is mounted differently and you get a different result as a whole

      Here's my video comparing the M3 Comp to the RS3.
      The RS3 is a budget M3 since it costs like $25k less. But still offers a very performance focused sedan with a true fun factor and engagement level. If you want a new M3 but don't want to spend $90k. The RS3 at $65k is a great way to go to get similar fun. M340 is a bit dull compared to the RS3, so the RS3 seems more in line with an M3 and its fun factor.

      M340i is a bit easier to drive around town with the smoother transmission and brakes. About 1-2in more room in the back seats and bigger trunk. But the RS3 still fit me in the back. RS3 is just as refined for highways driving. So once you get up to speed they both feel super refined. If you want the extra fun factor, go RS3. If you genuinely need the slightly larger car, go M340i. Both would be fine in winter with all season tires.

    I drove an rs3 for 4.5 years and loved it. Sounds amazing and had great performance. I was always a little disappointed with the looks as the car doesnt really stand out and scream “special” although it certainly is a very special car. The turbo lag was surprisingly prominent but i must say it added greatly to the drama of the driving experience. The biggest downsides were the chassis and the water pump. In the time i owned the car, the water pump had to be replaced three times (cheap plastic part). Also since the rs3 is built on a basic a3 frame, and audi doesnt do much to reinforce it on the rs3, the car practically shook itself apart and was a rattling mess at the end. I bought the car for the engine, not the interior so it never bothered me.
    Now i own a m340i x drive. This car feels much more “executive” and refined. Not as exciting but much more comfortable and roomier. I got with m performance exhaust so sounds just as amazing (although not as “unique”) as the rs3. I needed to move on to something larger and more comfortable so the m340 was a perfect choice after the rs3.
    The rs3 held its value much better than i am expecting the m340i will.
    Brakes on rs3 cost twice as much as m340i and tires were sometimes hard to source (went through a bunch). Confused the tire shop each time cause the wider tires are in front :)
    Overall i dont miss the rs3. The m340 is different enough that i dont compare them and think of them as two separate experiences. I can say that i have gotten more compliments on my m340 in the three months i have owned it than with the rs3 over 4.5 years. Just goes to show that the average person still doesnt know what an rs3 is lol.

Yeah I might rarely see rs3 but I always see s3 or A3 and I always see 3 series bmw new and old and mercs. Want something unique and different

      Thats because most American brands have done away from selling sedans. European markets have a higher demand for sedans. And the Asian automakers just arent into luxury and real performance. So European cars are the one who make the serious sport sedans.

    Interior of the m340i eeally puts the rs3 to shame the rs3 looks cheap inside for a flagship performace model. The same interior as a regular a3 minus the rs seats which to me arents even comparable to the full fat M seats. The m seat feels far more supportive and looks way better. But i wont lie pound for pound the rs3 will beaf an m340i every time i just wish audi made the rs Interior feel special like how if you went from a 3 series to a m3 theres a massive jump in quality

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah there is a cheap aspect to the RS3 over the M340. But the seats are definitely better. Especially with the Nappa leather vs the fake leather. You can option real leather in the M340. But the RS seats have a better bucket design. The RS really gives you every performance thing you want. Also the carbon fiber and Alcantara do give it a better feeling. Just the upper dash, piano black around the shifter and plastic on the doors is where the RS should have more carbon and leather

    I absolutely love the Audi Rs3 for performance wise and exterior aesthetics, HOWEVER for daily practicality , I would go with the M340i. The BMW has plenty of power for its underrated HP from BMW for day to day usage. The car has more room , and I love the tech. I am trying not to be bias with my comment for I am a BMW owner of a 23 X3M40i. I am a single young male with no kids yet, so the RS3 would fit me perfectly , because I love Compact sedans and SUV , but the RS3 is just a tad bit on the smaller side for me even tho I am 6’1 170lbs on the slimmer side, but I do like a tad more room to wiggle , and to have my passengers comfortable whenever I feel like having company in my vehicle. Congratulations on the purchase. I hope you enjoy it ! HNY ! Cheers 🥂

    M340i just looks so much more sleek and aggresive imo. Its insane u said theres way more room in the BMW when the audi looks like a fat egg. 😂 BMW interior is honeslty way nicer looking, audi little cheesy gauge cluster screen looks cheap. Bottom center console where the buttons are doesnt look near as good.
    I guess u cant get the carbon fiber bucket seats or M seats in a m340i unless u just didnt get them. Not sure if audi has full self driving like assisted drivers+ and auto park for parallel and normals parking spots but if not BMW is ahead tech wise aswell. Overall just a better looking sports car thats also a 4 door. M3 wouldnt even be a debate on which is better for this generation they win in every aspect even compared to a rs6

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  7 месяцев назад

      M340 had about an inch or two more legroom and headroom. RS3 was still comfortable tho. In person the Audi buttons look and feel nice. And actually has a better appointed interior with real leather, carbon and alcantara. RS3 has lane keeping and adaptive cruise. Does a good job just like the BMW for highway driving. Yes the M3 is a beast. I love that car. But the RS3 is what feels like the baby version of the M3. The M340 is way soft and not as aggressive to drive and is more of a normal 3 series that also has a nice engine. RS3 is a performance sedan first like the M3, but more affordable. Great options for different needs.
