The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I was just 14 when this song played on my transistor radio. Where have the years gone? Still love the Four Seasons sound. Thanks for sharing...God Bless
This is what I like to see. Acts performing their hits while they're still hot. This song was Number One the week of this performance.
Love "The Four Seasons"... this is when they dressed with class and style. Frankie Valley has some voice! Thank you for sharing! 💖
Can’t wait for this one!!!! The Four Seasons are one of the all time great bands of the rock/pop era. Wish there were more film/video clips of this band.
Agreed!
They’re so underrated it’s unfair
They are incredible and enjoyable, the vocal skills are terrific ❤️
Terrific, stylish. Frankie Valli's voice is just incredible.
A fantastic song, written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio.
Thank you for uploading this one! This was the first appearance of the Four Seasons on Sullivan under that name, although they did appear on the show in the 1950's as The Four Lovers.
Great info, thank you
@@georgemusic4all4seasons You're welcome! It's a shame that they made so few appearances on the Sullivan show.
@@TomElvisSmith Bobby wasn’t in the group at the time and I don’t know if Nicky was in. Nicky and Tommy had performing together since 1955 but Nicky was in and out of the group due to playing with other groups and being in the Army. It was only from 1958 on that the group later known as the world famous first incarnation of the Four Seasons came into existence and ended in ‘65 with Nicky’s departure. He was replaced by Charlie Callelo first for a few months, then by Joe Long (or Joe LaBracio) who ushered in the second most successful era and should’ve been in the rock and roll hall of fame.
@@Frnk_3 completely agree with you regarding Joe Long belonging in the hall of fame. It’s a crying shame he was not included, considering he was in the band for 10 years and really contributed artistically to the band. So sad he passed away and you could hear it in his voice the hurt and disappointment on not being included with his former band mates. At least the New Jersey Hall of Fame did right by including him a couple of years back with Valli and Seasons.
@@georgemusic4all4seasons Yea he did an interview right after Tommy passed talking about it than died himself 5 months later. 💔
One of the best times ever to be living -- and living in the wonderful USA.
You don't get artists and musicians like this anymore! the 60s was a MAGICAL era for music when singers could actually sing live, and with SOUL!..the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Darlene Love, Ben E King, Motown music, Aretha, Etta James, Mamas & Papas, Sonny & Cher, The Righteous Brothers, The Walker Brothers, The Rolling Stones, The Shirelles, The Monkees, Bob Dylan, The Supremes, Dusty Springfield, The Beach Boys, Sandi Shaw, James Brown, etc etc etc music like that will NEVER be replicated.
One of the best records of the 60s
WOW, Look at that sweet, sweet Cherry Red Gibson ES-355 with the varitone and with the Bigsby, instead of the sideways vibrato. Top of the Gibson ES Line. And that classic Fender Precision Bass with the anodized gold pickguard. WOW. The Ray Bloch Orchestra completely nails the arrangement; doesn't overplay the vocals. I was 12 and saw this exact performance, live on our small B&W in the living room. Listen close, at the beginning the string section is playing the riff to 'Sherry Baby'...cool~!...The Real Deal, Ladies and Gentlemen: A GIGANTIC Hit Record.
wouldn't it be cool if he was actually playing it here..
I have the Gretsch black and gold trim with the Bigsby . . . . Plays like a dream
You can listen to this song at any place or time and you will know that it is from the four seasons, they are unmistakable.
Yes, Frankie's voice, both tenor and falsetto, is instantly recognizable - and no the group at the time was using this harmony construction. The boys' backing harmonies are in the lower register which serves to highlight Frankie's higher lead vocal. I think Nick Massi arranged the harmonies - brilliant!
@@colinsellers9714 You are CORRECT Colin--exactly!
The music was clean and enjoyable for the entire family.
Iconic
Love ,love ,Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons.I was only 14 years old when they started out.I wore out all my Albums of them ,played them so much. When I got married I was still playing my Albums of them ,my 5 year old Son knew the words by heart and loved them to .Miss those days so much.
So great Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons! I had many of their records! Just great East Coast Pop!
A blast from the past 🎶🎵🎶🎵💖
Ed Sullivan Show was great, love it :)
I saw Frankie Valli in Chicago last night! He’s still got it at 89!
I heard he doesn't really sing.
@@joycepino9749Did you read they in a comment?
Absolutely correct. Philadelphia USA
Thank you for sharing this, I love this group. This is a spectacular performance.
He was such a doll, and Ed Sullivan was such a good host to bring him over to take a bow. Great clip, wonderful:)💝
Totally Rite-On.
Frankie had That Voice.
His band group grooving that all out.
Wonderful !!! Time machine please !!!
Very nice example of rock/teen ballads from late 50s / early 60's period.
Notice no guitar leads attached to either the guitar or the electric bass. Also notice that the organ riff of "Sherry" in the beginning is NOT being played by Bob Gaudio at the organ (his finger motions do NOT correspond with the organ sound you hear). So apparently NONE of the instruments were plugged in in this clip.
You are correct but there is a live band playing as the vocals are live.
the music is being played by the orchestra off stage ; Frankie is singing live
Beautiful
I always loved how Bob Gaudio opened with the intro to "Sherry" on keyboard with this. As an aside, the video quality seems quite good for the early 60s.
thanks anthony.
I have always loved this song. I get so much joy listening to their harmony and the lead takes me there with his ability to fluctuate his voice.
A great group and very talented and Frankie how high can you go with the unite voice and sounds great and still going it😎🛅🎼🎙
Always enjoyed their songs esp Franky Vallie when he went solo
Upload the Little Stevie Wonder performance of Fingertips May 3 1964
Always love hearing Frankie sing live.
Great !!
Great to listen to
Yay
I’m strangely attracted to the guy playing the bass. 🙂
Otro nivel!!!
Gotta love that lost wireless technology....🤫
I remember my sister playing this song from a 45 rpm record on a tabletop player.
They look like something from Thunderbirds!!! :)
The Wonderers : leave the kid alone ! 😂
Surprised. Thought Sullivan only allowed live acts.
With the typical American diet these days, this song takes on a whole new meaning.
😳 The original Alvin and the Chipmunks 🤣
Actually David Seville performed his Witch Doctor on EDS.
I'm pretty sure I saw this performance. Did they also sing "Sherry" on this show, or was that on another one?
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is live.
I like it, but notice the lack of guitar leads and mic.
The guy on the organ seems to be only for show. Great performance though.
@@robertswedo1027 Bob Gaudio (who wrote the song). Saw them in London in the '60s. I remember he always placed his keyboard at right angles to the stage, and turned his face to the audience throughout each song smiling away. Genius musician, as was Nick Massi.
in live TV at that time, the vocals were picked up by boom mics hung above the performers but out of camera range-Frankie is singing live and it is heard thru the boom mic, the music is being played by an orchestra off stage
@@anthonycolatrella2438 Thank you for the information. I have a shotgun microphone and microphone boom myself. I will have to experiment.
Look like cast members from a Martin Scorcese movie
Radio radio
Poor Bob Gaudio left behind 🤣
But I'd like to pour my thanks to the Jersey Boys musical for introducing me this band 💯💯
how was he left behind? He was with them all through the 60's, yes he was gone when there 70's weaker period wa going on.
A number of people are commenting on whether this is lip syncing because none of the instruments are plugged in. The guitars are obviously not really playing. The question is, is Valli singing? I suggest he is, mainly because the actual audio is terrible (unlike other Ed Sullivan music acts) - I think he is singing live but it is being captured on a rather distant boom mic, which is in turn picking up the now ambient sound of the band backstage. That's why it sounds like it's been recorded in a cave!
I agree on all points. Sounding as good as he does on a boom mic says a lot for Frankie's singing chops!
Wow the guitars are bigger then the peps.
😎🥳💫👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
Didn't it all end up with everyone suing everyone over money?
S
I’m pretty sure they’re really singing
electric guitars not plugged in, no microphones, HUH ?
Live vocals via a boom mic but, it is Ray Bloch and the CBS Orchestra providing the music.
at that time in early live TV, the vocals were picked up by boom mikes which were hung above the performers but out of camera range although sometimes the camera man would slip up and the mikes would come into view
the musicians were also not seen on camera
Guitar and bass aren't plugged in
Excellent lip-synching from Frankie.
@@MostlyBrenda vocals were live
@@MostlyBrenda I think Frankie Valli's vocals were live but I'm not sure about the background vocals. In general, the audio wasn't up to the usual fidelity of Sullivan's engineers in the control booth. The piano wasn't in the mix at all and as mentioned, the guitars weren't plugged in.
@@shave-a-thon3415 frankie was live
@@shave-a-thon3415 Look at the opening long camera shot at 0:08 No microphones. You can believe its live, but I don't.
Must have been some kind of castrato or something.
Pretend guitar playing? No cord!
No the guitars are not plugged in ; the music is being played by an orchestra off stage---can't you hear the horns
개같은 세상.. 피 맺히는 음악..ㅓ
lip-synced. No amp chords and the keyboard player is not pressing the keys.
Music was pre-recorded but the singing was live.
bob is for sure pressing the keys for the c, a minor, d minor, and g7th for the sherry intro and he's pressing them still for the g, d, and c when big girls starts
Upload the Little Stevie Wonder performance of Fingertips May 3 1964
how many times are u gonna request that?
