What would your choice of endurance bike be?
The Canyon sounds amazing, if only it had more mounting points…
Defy
new BMC Roadmachine
@@rmb_dev not a bad choice with 35mm tire clearance 👍
New BMC Roadmachine indeed. Would’ve loved to see it in this shootout. 40mm clearance, mudguard mounts, down tube storage compartment, …
I do wonder whether it’s the designers that think, “nah, nobody’s ever going to want to fit mudguards to an endurance bike” or if it’s the accounts department that make decisions like that. Mudguard mounts should be on the list of essentials for this type of bike and on many others.
Amen. Same goes for proprietary seat posts IMO.
How dare you use logic and rationale!!!
@@amitkumar-wj8gnabsolutely ridiculous!
Just bought a Giant Defy two weeks ago and I only can agree: Outstanding comfort, superfast acceleration, rocksteady on downhills, absolutely the best bike I've ever had under my bum.
That gap between fork and head tube in Canyon is astonishing...
Defy with basic 105 £3600.
Endurace with basic 105 £2400. Why then are you comparing the Defy to the Endurace costing 5k with Ultegra Di2. Its not like for like and your making the Defy out to be good value when you can get a better spec Endurace for less.
great review, thanks mate!
I never understand why you guys worry about tyres when they’re an easy and affordable thing to upgrade.
It used to be affordable, now it’s a £150 upgrade.
It’s always good to know when a relatively affordable upgrade (compared to the price of the full bike) can make a major improvement to the ride quality of the bike. I feel it’s more of an advice that if you buy the bike, they recommend to upgrade the tyres for maximum performance.
When they tested my bike, they recommended to swap the wheels and tyres, which is exactly what I did, and it rides like a bike that is twice as expensive now.
I don't have any complaints about my Defy Adv Pro 2. No issues with hookless wheels and won't be running out of battery mid ride with the 105 mechanical.
Looking at that exact model early next year.
How can you possibly compare a bike with Ultegra Di2 with Shimano 105 mech as if they are in the same class? And also say the Canyon is disappointing for “only” having a one sided power meter? Seems very biased to me. Yes the Giant may be a better value bike overall but that’s like comparing a VW to a Porsche and saying the VW is a better value, isn’t it?
I’d still take the Defy with the same group sets.
I would be disappointed with a one sided power meter too, it’s not really how it should be done.
I'd have picked the Cinelli, it's the only one I want to ride just by looking at it
Looks are a vital part of the equation
Cinelli always looks great.
I don’t see how anything can be called “endurance” with a 30mm tire clearance limit.
Looks great but heavy and can’t fit 32s? What decade are they in?
I bought the Lauf Uthald (Icelandic for endurance) and it is the best bang for your buck hands down. I looked at the Giant Defy but for virtually the same price I got Sram Force drivetrain and a dual sided power meter and Zipp 303s....can't beat that.
How do you like it so far? I’ve been looking at the Ufthald myself.
@@andrewlewis5359 Phenomenal bike, very comfortable, fast and fun to ride.
Unless you live outside of the US & have to whack an extra 20% VAT on top of their listed price
Tried many bikes and my Giant Defy Pro 1 was the hands down winner. Ultegra Di2, power meter, great carbon hoops and super comfortable ride cant beat Defy. The only problem is the saddle, changed to Fizik Antares .
Interesting - everyone’s butt is unique! I also bought a new Defy in January. 👍❤️
I was expecting to toss the Gavia tires and that saddle strait away. After 500 or so miles though - that basic saddle is a total win for me. And I’ve had to fight the great saddle numbness war in the past. Surprised to say the least.
So good i just bought the Giant with mudguards, to compliment the TCR i bought last year! Waiting for delivery and upgrades are waiting!!!😁😁😁
You can always fit generic mudguards without the mudguard mounts? I would also want to see electronic shifting nowadays, even at this price.
Roubiax SL8..
It does look very comfortable the giant
Just wandered is the Dogma X wouldn’t be in this category and is it more or less comparable?
Another great in-depth, real-world review. Thank you, Warren.
Thanks for watching! From all at BikeRadar
I’ve had my Defy Pro 1 for 3 weeks and can honestly say it’s an awesome bike! Fast, comfortable and looks good too!
Looks good? That’s probably the Defy’s main failing. It’s one of the worst looking road bikes currently on the market. So underwhelming
I guess it comes down what the individual wants from a bike. I know Giant bikes get great reviews but they always look a bit meh to me. Personally I want an endurance bike that looks like a race bike as the industry keeps telling us most of us should be riding endurance. I don’t want mudguard mounts and tool compartments. Most of us are not going to race but we still a bike that has the look back ability.
Looks like the giant took a tumble the derailleur is battered!
Nice review, strap on mudgaurds are very affordable and why hookless for endurance?
Because hookless is great for those not wearing tinfoil hats
Strap on mudguards are only fine if you’re O.K with them wrecking your brand new paintwork.
With hookless and larger size tires you can run tires at lower pressure which helps with comfort on long rides.
Been a TCR man for so many years.... On the verge of a change to the Defy.... Pro1 is always in stock in my local shop 😂🤷🏼♂️
Worrying about aero like we are all riding at 40kph average speed 😂
If you’re doing more than 10mph it’s the biggest factor slowing you down. Now ride into a 10mph headwind and aero really does matter.
@@SecwetGwiweror, in a crosswind Aero frames and rims are a pain
Sadly there's no mechanical shifting available on the Defy Advanced Pro models here in Australia, and the range starts with the Advanced Pro 1 with 105 Di2 for a lot more money 😞
What’s wrong with Di2?
Price
Yeah, we cop it down here on price and component options. Still the Giant defy range is what I’d go for…..if I could afford it.
The best endurance bike, IMO, is the Specialized Crux w/ 700x32 or 35mm tires. It's also a pretty good road race bike w/ 28s, or an excellent gravel bike w/ 47s.
Why is there a little opening at the bottom headset of the endurace?
The integrated crown race was probably laid up a little too high up the steerer tube.
The new Argon 18 Krypton, looks amazing
“All at a reasonable price” - 😂
Why would you not include the Trek Domone???? I find your bias for Giant quite funny and your a big guy as well
The Giant Defy Pro 2 was always going to win. Value for money, the actual price point, comfort, weight, components all add to the win.
What about the Cervelo Caledonia 5?
Didn't pay as much as Cinelli
For those prices Roubaix SL8 Comp hands down.
Et Specialized, Cannondale, Scott, Orbea????
...the one you have, or can afford to buy. Fairly simple really.
Hi, today i ordered Specialized Roubaix, so i see 😅
8:41 who's the numpty that put all the scratches down the outside of the derailleur?
You forgot to mention, Eddie Merckx “Mourenx 69” 🚴♂️💪🏻
I'm sure they're all OK bikes but Jesus wept, does anyone else tire of the marketing BS. It's almost as if your man is reading straight from the brochure.
Hi
Lapierre pulsium sat ftw
Yea the Giant is kind of plain, But maybe the best deal. But the hookless=(toothless) wheels go strait in the trash.
Not a problem with wider tires under 65psi.
@@petersouthernboy6327 Yes i agree there ok for MTB
@@redauwg911 I’ve been training and racing gravel for two seasons tubeless - no issues there, either.
@@petersouthernboy6327 So for gravel your running at about 35 psi ?
@@redauwg911 exactly. 32 up front, 34 in back. With a shit ton of Silca Ultimate poured in there. 47mm Pathfinder Pro’s.
The defy wins just by that colour itself
One of the first things people do (and cheapest) is too upgrade the tires. OEM tires are not always going to be the best, so I am not sure that’s a fair performance point - when they can be swapped out easily.
So I need to have mud guards. Even though most rides I do require some train travel which requires a bike bag which is incompatible with mud guards... Sure. This is why I don't really like reviews or awards for bikes. You have no clue about my needs so just provide info. Would one of the others have won without the fender requirement? Who knows, the whole thing is uselessinfo for me.
Yes, features are a very subjective thing. Where I live it’s dry and a little bit cooler in winter and in summer it’s hot and there’s more rain but not so much that I can’t ride most of the time and fine conditions. Mudguard mounts are a joke where I live. Would never be used so it’s one of those really subjective features. I do have a titanium gravel bike that I sometimes use in bad weather but even then I just put an arse saver on it sometimes. It really comes down to individual needs
seriously? Or were these the only brands who paid to take part in the "competition"?
Their last few comparisons have basically been two of the best value endurance bikes & then a 3rd bike who have clearly paid to be included lmao
New BMC Roadmachine Two easily beats the Defy.
The Roadmachine has full Integrated internal cables and downtube storage for $5,500. The Roadmachine Two comes with Ultegra Di2 and has a more advanced frameset than the Giant Defy. The Defy Advanced Pro 2 is $600 less at $4,900, but it also only has 105 Di2 and the Roadmachine has Ultegra Di2. The Defy also does not have integrated internal cabling and no downtube storage. And the cheap in house Giant 36 CF wheels simply do not make up for all its deficiencies versus the Roadmachine Two. If you want the Defy with Ultegra Di2 like the Roadmachine the price jumps to $6,500, $1,000 more than the Roadmachine Two. Plus, even this higher priced Defy still does not have full internal cabling and no downtube storage. Sorry, the Roadmachine Two easily beats the Defy Advanced pro for not only having a better more advanced frame set, but it is actually a better $ value given what you actually get versus the $4,900 Defy Advanced Pro 2 or the $6,500 Advanced Pro 1. 😀
No hookless for me... But I would consider buying a Defy frame and doing my own build...
Same here. I asked Giant but they won't sell it here in the UK unlike other countries.
@awab789 that's too bad.
I’m waiting for the Advanced Pro Defy frame to become available here in the States. Currently only the SL is available as a Frameset.
The prices on these are ridiculous
Why don't Giant cater for shorter people?
The Cinelli is a bottom of the barrel pick for this, I would have picked something like the Roubaix
The Roubaix was tested but didn't make the final three
Sorry can’t agree with you. I’ll take Ultegra Di2 over mechanical 105 everytime. Canyon over all is the better deal at additional $1500.00 price tag. Better group set and wheels than Giant.
1) any Giant dealer is going to give you 20 to 30% off a bike, and 2) good luck getting a timely and satisfactory warranty resolution from Canyon on a frame problem.
you lost me at "press fit BB"
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""Best""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" we tested 5 bikes lolzor product placement
Giant has those disgusting hookless rims yuk!!
There is nothing wrong with hookless. Im riding on them, they are completely fine. There are people that have put thousands of miles on them with no problem.
I do have a problem with the confusing, limited and expensive tyre choice.
Might be better if you are a light rider but I am over 15 stone but not fat! They are well dodgy for heavy riders.
More bike hype bullshit....
Mtb better
We've got our mtb bike of the year videos coming soon
I think OP missed the road bike theme
That Defy will be over 9kg with pedals and cages + 3.5k for 105 🫣
lol fake news
It definitely is a mate of mine has one
