Today, my grandma will show you how she likes to steam short grain purple sticky rice. I wanted to film this video with her since she always makes the perfect purple sticky rice. Purple sticky rice is commonly eaten during Hmong New year but it can be eaten all year round. Great with grilled meat, soups, papaya salad, as a dessert, etc. Let me know what you like to eat sticky rice with and how you like to make purple sticky rice. It takes practice to steam the sticky rice to your desire texture.
So I hope you all enjoy this humble video. As always, through years of experience, my grandma doesn't do exact measurements. It's all by feels & years of making it. They know how much and when it's ready. So I hope you are able to follow along and just enjoy some time with her.
Happy Hmong New Year and Happy Cooking!
Hope you all are keeping yourself safe and healthy.

Seeing your grandma makes me miss mine. Love purple sticky rice, my grandma would make it into ncuav for us and I use to eat as it would come out fresh from the mochi maker 😂
Growing up, I didn’t have grandmas from either side, seeing your grandma, I wish, I grew up knowing my grandmas. She’s such a cute little old lady. You’re very lucky!
It makes me teary watching our grandma cook sticky rice. I am too green Hmong and I miss speaking it to the elders. It makes me miss my mom. She is still alive and well. But the closeness and the show of love of cooking together. Thanks for sharing.
Your grandmas hands look like my grandma’s…. I got tears eyes… you’re smart to spend time with her.
Thank you grandma for sharing your years of knowledge with us 😊
Thank you grandma for showing us how make purple sticky rice. Didn't grow up with a mom or grandma to teach me so this is so bittersweet especially seeing your relationship with your grandma. ❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve always enjoyed your videos when you include your grandpa and grandma. Their smiles and laughters when they talk, they’re the cutest! And thanks to grandma, I never knew to use cold water. I’ve done it in the past with warm water and it was too soft..so I stopped making sticky rice. Ive been buying ready to eat sticky rice. Lol!! Please read all these comments to her, she is such a sweet lady!
Your grandma is so cute. Makes me miss mine so much.
You're grandma is so sweet! You're so lucky to have a grandma like her. Makes me miss my grandpa!! He would always make us ncuav. It was one of his specialty and bc we didn't have a grandma to do it for us. He was our grandpa and grandma.
I love that you cook with your grandma. I never did. I took for granted of the time she was here and of the idea that she'll be with us forever and never cooked with her or watched how she cooked. This made me miss my grandma so much. Thanks for the nostalgic video.
You are so fun to watch and I like your smiling when you talk. Good job
Happy and healthy new year!
Do more cooking with grandma. She's so cute. You're soooo blessed to have her, I never knew neither of mine.
Whoa, this is wonderful - for both seeing your sweet Grandma... AND learning a new recipe! THANK YOU. I love black, purple, and red rices, but don't have a lot of ways of making them. This REALLY helps, so I appreciate it greatly! My bae lived in South Korea 16 years, so most of the time I make JapGokBap, but I've really wanted to find something like THIS. Again, thank you!
I think it’s great you spend time with your grandma. And you speak green.
I love your grandma so much! Makes me miss mine since she has passed on a long time now. She was always active like your grandma and a great, patient teacher. Cherish every moment with her!
Protect her at all costs 🥺♥️
Thanks so much for sharing your grandma & how to make sticky rice. I never made sticky rice & followed ur grandma steps & it turned out great!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Watching your videos of your grandma and your mom makes me miss my grandma she passed away probably about almost 10 years now and I miss her deeply and I wish that she was around to teach me things
I love watching your videos! Your grandma is so cute! Makes me miss my grandma ❤️
Thanks for showing how your grandma makes hers. I was taught a different way using long grain rice - not by any family members! Unfortunately, neither my grandma (RIP) and mom cooked much for the kids growing up, and I'm Hmong haha. It's great to see how active your grandma is. Please show more of her. Thanks.
This is so bittersweet. Makes me wish I had a grandma or a mom there to me these things.
Man I love those grandmas they are the best!
Love videos with your Puj in them. Please do more. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thank you this brought back so many HAPPY memories from when my mother wud make it when she was alive…. Thank you again
Your grandma is so cute!! I wish I have my grandmas with me. My pog is in Laos I’ve never met her and my tais died when my mom was still a little girl. Never had a chance to meet them. Seeing this video warms my heart. I feel like this would be me with both my grammies too.

Happy Hmong New Year! This was definitely a super fun video to watch. Your grandma has the best smile. I hope my hands are as plump and cute as hers when I'm her age.
How do you recommend reheating this type of rice?
Seeing your grandma makes purple sticky rice using with black sticky Rice
And using Jasmine rice too
And thanks for speaking the better Hmong dialect.
is there a faster way as well?
How many batches is that? How huge the steamer?
Mucho trabajo. Yo uso una arrocera electrica o instant pot y listo. Se apaga sola mientras algo o hago otras cosas. Lo hago con purple rice d Publix di quieto mezclo co parboilet ricabo integral😊

That’s a lot of sticky rice
Do you know how many pounds?of black and white rice mix together?
Tug fob2 mov nplaum Ntshaav nuav puas yog, Nam Dlaab Ntsum Yig Hawj ?
If I don’t have a bamboo steaming basket, can I use my traditional metal steaming pot for white rice instead? Nice video!
Yes
I love purple sticky rice but it looks hard to make
So did u guys rinse the black rice too? And did u do the same thing to the long sticky rice? Like put the pounded black rice in?
We did not rinse the black rice. Just the white sticky rice. Yes, long grain sticky rice is the same process but cooking time may vary
Cas yuav ntxim qab ua luaj
I switched from eating just white sticky rice to purple! I use the ratio of 2 cups white sweet rice to 1 cup black sweet rice. Delicious and much healthier for you! ❤
I seen it at the store called purple rice
Fry some eggs, ummmm ummm good
When I use the bamboo steamer it gives off a weird smell of bamboo with the rice. Any tips?
Soak it in water for 4 hrs before you use it. You can also steam it for a good 1 hr to release most of the bamboo smell. It needs to be used quite a lot to reduce the smell. But it will have that slight smell which makes it unique. Some are more sensitive to it than others.
@@CHerCreations I'll definitely try that! That's the only reason why I don't really steam rice the traditional way anymore. Hope this help because the texture and flavour of the rice is much more rich and fluffy. Thank you.
Ah, yes.
💜
I miss my grandma
Nyob Zoo!! 😋❤
I swear if anyone eats sticky rice they will always have an empty rice bag to dump sticky rice on after steaming. 😂
Tell your grandma/mom, I love her! Make me miss my mom so much! 😢
🤗❤️❤️🥰

Omg looks so good!!
I have a hard time pounding my purple rice to make it to a powder. I use a mortar too. Any tips?
Yes, it takes power and time to pound it. If you have a spice grinder or a food processor, I would use that to speed it up. My grandma is pretty boss and she does it all in the mortar (which takes longer) 😊 Hope that helps
