M*A*S*H - Hawkeye Pierce's Patented Whistle

- In the original film, Hawkeye (Donald Sutherland) produces a distinctive whistle (which is appropriated by Radar O'Reilly at the film's end). The whistle does not carry into the television program.
No sir, I didn't steal a jeep, it's right outside
Rest in Peace, Donald Sutherland.
😢😢😢
I *finally* learned to whistle because of this movie. Not kidding.
Donald Sutherland an Hawkeye Pierce. Both unforgettable, both irreplaceable.
I loved Donald Sutherland in "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) too.
Here's to you Donald Sutherland. RIP.
This movie had a lot of newly known and up & coming actors in it. Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould, Sally Kellerman (Hot Lips), Robert Duval (Frank Burns), Rene Auberjonois, Tom Skerritt (Duke, Capt. Dallas in Alien), John Schuck, Gary Burghoff (Radar, and only cast member who went to TV show), and Fred Williamson ("Spearchucker" Jones).
During the football game in one scene if you look at the far back of the area of the field you will see cars passing by on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles. A gaffe they couldn't avoid and left in the film.
RIP Hawkeye
RIP Mr. Sutherland
Descanse En Paz Gran Actor Donald Sutherland. Vivirá Inmortal en sus Películas. Entrevistas. Extraordinario Actor.
Great tribute. Hell. Finest kind.
R.I.P. ❤
Part mourning dove, part wolf whistle
The TV show, while great in it's heyday, lacked the subtlety of the movie. It was more campy and shamelessly manipulative emotionally. And it did a LOT of moralizing without the exciting SUBVERSION of the film. Sutherland and Gould and the whole cast (plus the actor's dream director, Robert Altman) made an unforgettable and unique motion picture. A classic.
Well put and precisely why the TV series makes me cringe. I read an interview with Richard Hornberger (who wrote the novel as Richard Hooker) and he liked the film but detested the TB series. Reason? Moralizing. That and he envisioned Hawkeye as politically conservative, something Alda's Hawkeye was flagrantly not.
Also, Alan Adla is plainly an irritating git in the TV series!
I agree Sparkicus
Trivia Alert: they needed lyrics for the “Suicide is Painless” scene. Robert Altman’s son wrote them overnight with John Mandel. With royalty payments, he wound up making over $1 million, much more than Altman made in total on the movie.
Sutherland’s Hawkeye will always be the Real Hawkeye in my estimation…

I'm missing your point. How is a whistle racist???
R.I.P to the one and only Donald Sutherland.
2:09. I love the fact that Hawkeye taught radar his whistle. His little "something to remember him by" 😜😜😜😜😜😜
The show was still on when I was a kid...but then I saw the movie... Donald Sutherland is Hawkeye Pierce...R.I.P...
R.I.P. Donald Sutherland
Donald Sutherland was my first Hollywood crush...RIP sweet prince ✨️
For you movie buffs out there, this is the exact same whistle that's used in "Fantastic Mr. Fox"
Yeah I was sure this was the case but can't find anything confirming it
No doubt Wes loves Altman.
another fun fact, in fantastic mr fox during the diving scene the song playing is "watch a crazy world go by" and was the same one in disney's cartoon robin hood with the animals who both happened to be two foxes
god i knew i was trying to remember who it was the whole movie and i was losing my mind thank you
Who gives a s--t.
RIP Capt. Hawkeye Pierce.
The original, darker, more cynical and sarcastic, and better embodiment.
“Oh I didn’t steal it, it’s right outside…!” *dead*
RIP Hawkeye
I literally have my kids trained with this whistle. When we're out at the store or somewhere, I whistle these three notes, and they know it's time to go.
It may sound inhumane, but I find it much better than hollering their names like a typical parent. I'm just a dude whistling, not a man yelling his kids' names.
Best parenting shortcut I ever came up with.
mooremiket That's not inhumane at all. It is better than being those parents that scream their kids names. Your method is a lot more necessary and not rude anyway.
mooremiket I'm afraid my dad has you beat by forty-odd years. Our family whistle served exactly that purpose. Strange thing is: I don't think he saw MASH until much later... Europe and all...
Dane Insane it actually is pretty inhumane. he’s treating them like dogs.
You wanna whistle the dog will come, if a person wants me they say my name three times in a mirror with candles arranged in a pentagram.
Not inhumane at all, my dad had a whistle too. SO MUCH better than having your name called out.
As much as I love the TV show, I think that Donald Sutherland’s portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce is superior to Alan Alda’s.
The only thing they did wrong was forget Hawkeyes nice whistle, whether it would be after surgeries or something happening
Filmed Apr 19, 1969 - Jun 22, 1969 Malibu. Donald Sutherland 1935-2024
Looks like Radar was the only one that kept his role. Was also surprised to see Rene Auberjonois that I remember from Benson and Star Trek DS9. He passed in 2019.
He's not the only Star Trek Actor to appear in this film, John Schuck who played "Painless" Waldowski (I probably spelled that wrong) played the Klingon Ambassador in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, where he acted alongside Rene who, prior to playing Odo, played a character called "Colonel West" but most of his scenes were cut from the theatrical release of the latter film.
Sally Kellerman who plays "Hot Lips" was in the second pilot episode for the original Star Trek series as Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. Those three actors are the ones I'm most familiar with that have been in this film and in a Star Trek production.
@@DelcoRanz93 Ah very nice! I had to google Sally but after seeing screens and a couple of video clips with those glowy eyes, I recalled the episode.
Benson was great, but more in SOAP... when he got his spinoff it was watered down....
RIP Donald Sutherland!
I always thought Donald Sutherland was a better Hawkeye than Alan Alda. Alda's Hawkeye was a bit too gabby for my taste. .
Well, you’re dealing to two different types. Alan Alda’s HAD to be talkative because his was a TV show version. Also, the Tv show circled around Hawkeye. The Movie on the other hand was closer to the book and covered more people. I loved em both. I think they both made great Hawkeyes.
*whistles walking away*
Edward Winters I like Alan Alda he’s a nice man and hot
Seems like apples to oranges
@@sherryhannah9262Donald Sutherland is VERY hot
RIP Donald Sutherland 😢 I really sympathize with his son Kiefer and his family.
Rest in Peace Pro from Dover
A patent that Alan Alda can't touch.
Quote is right on, Sutherland plays a way better Captain Hawkeye Pierce. Sutherland is a natural, doesn't slightly appear as acting.
@@vichy7661 Sutherland can easily play likable characters including Captain Pierce in Mash or Oddball in Kelly’s Heroes with Clint Eastwood or even unlikeable characters and villains like his role as the sadistic warden in Sylvester Stallone’s Lockup and bad guy in Backdraft.
Well said. Alda was good. But Sutherland's original version is a lot better in my opinion. A lot less preachy and pretentious.
Donald Sutherland was from Nova Scotia and as such sounds and acts a lot more like a guy from a small town in Maine where the character Hawkeye is supposed to be from. Alda would be better playing Groucho Marx.
Blake: Did Pierce steal that jeep?
Radar: No sir, he’s driving it.
Blake: Oh I see, well, never mind.
😆
Blake : Did Hawkeye steal that jeep?
Radar: No sir, it's the one he came in.
Blake: Oh good, Come along my dear.
The whistle that became the iconic android notification sound
Rene Auberjonois does bear a striking resemblance to William Christopher
0:02 In the Marine Corps I ran into salts who were in Motor T. They can make your life miserable if you get on their bad side, like misplacing the paperwork needed to drive the vehicle and so on.
Film fav Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye
wish i could whistle! now i see where Fantastic Mr. Fox must have gotten its inspo
Donald Sutherland, you will be missed. R.I.P.
Saw this movie when I was about 13 or so, and I've been imitating that whistle ever since. I'm in my 40s now, so it's been a while. 😄
Formula 1 uses the same three-note jingle to alert viewers that they are about to listen in on a driver's radio communications.
Here is to you kid...A Giant..
Was that Renee Auboise from Benson and Deep Space 9 fame?
yes
Auboise? Isn't it Aberjonois? Or did he change his name since then? Wouldn't be surprised, as Siddig El Fadil was Alexander Siddig by the time DS9 was done :P
As far as I know, he's always gone by Auberjonois. It's what he was credited as in this movie, DS9, and everything else I've seen him in. The only difference ive ever noticed is that the sometimes leave the accent aigu off of his first name making it Rene and not René.
Yup that's odo
Yes it is Rene Auberjonois who played Father John Francis Mulcahy in the film adaptation of Mash. He was also in the Mel Gibson hit The Patriot and appeared in the tv shows Boston Legal, Frazier and even was in an episode of Criminal Minds as a corrupt and sadistic Army Colonel. He passed away in 2019. He turned down the offer to return to play Father Mulcahy in the tv series of Mash.
Lyrics:
Fyoo fyee fyoooo
I wish they had this whistle on the tv show.
God's Speed Hawkeye ... ✨️🙏
I never saw this version of MASH. I only saw the Alan Alder Hawkeye version. I didn't know about other actors playing the part.
So, did you watch the movie yet? If so, what did you think?
I saw it as a kid about 35years ago. It's was a bit heavy for me at the time.
It was a movie, the others actors Belong to a TV serie.
@@myriamespitiaespitia9587 Oh actually, I remember seeing the final episode of MASH as a kid. I thought that was the Movie but it didn't have Domald Sutherland playing Hawkeye. I guess i never saw this movie with Donald Sutherland in it.
that quiet "racist" is the funniest gag in the movie.
Donald Southerland made that movie.
Would've been funny if he did his dog imitation or his other dog imitation. Nice to see that after the gold heist, OddBall stayed in or rejoined the army or was redrafted. also nice to know the gold paid for his fast-tracked education and medical training. Woof woof woof !
For years people have wondered about why I make that little whistle.
And you're not alone...
The pro from Dover:)
I got people so trained that when someone actually happened to watch this movie they said “hey he does your whistle!”
Rene was quite the actor...he was absolutely vicious as Clayton sometimes...and it was always funny when Robert's Benson put him in his place...he was also great as Chef Louie in the Little Mermaid...it is too bad he couldn't have been in the Live Action one.
Rest in peace
RIP Hawkeye.
I still do this.
My favorite Hawkeye
Operating like bums. 😅
R.I.P. Donald Sutherland
Actually really glad this whistle never made it to the series, I personally always thought it was awkward. Loved the film otherwise
RIP, Donald Sutherland. There's a movie that Kiefer did and I don't remember the name of the film, but he put on the same type of hat that Donald wore and it was like an exact ringer.
RIP Donald
Josh have any questions you all night long lyrics meaning the.
I hope y’all will reply to this I have the novel and the movie
Different, same character, just different
Still think Alan Alda was the best Hawkeye...❤️
Fantastic Mr. Fox?
Sutherland as a hawkeye wow
Those three note are used to summon my dog or locate my brother/sister when we separate at Walmart.
I'm a fan of the TV series, but for an odd reason, I like this version of hawkeye played by donald sutherland better than alan alda's lighthearted version. the tv series was not very realistic about a war overall, even when it tried to be serious I was unimpressed, while the film really depicted the fact that the surgeons and soldiers were living in constant fear and had unpredictable conditions. They could be bombed or invaded at any point, while the show was about pointless things like making a concrete floor, giving shots to a horse and of course getting rid of most of the original characters and replacing them with new ones, that I found really hard to adjust to, mainly cause I saw the film before the tv show. I can see why Robert Altman, the director of this film, hated the show. The tv show should get a reboot, with the same dark tone like the film. The reboot would be seriously listed under shows like Law & Order, Bones and NCIS hahaha
My mom who spent 24 years in the army medical core, and was deployed multiple times said that MASH is an accurate potrayal.
Understand...it being tv..more limitations...and having to have a new story line every week
Nice speech.
Damn even as old as this comment is that last bit is so bad. Like comparing MASH to NCIS or Bones like those shows have anything near the amount to offer. Like police procedural with comedy is fine, but it's apples and oranges.
The movie is very close to the book in terms of the characterizations.
Odo!!

Racist
Alan Alda wasn't nearly as good as the original cast but he used it to pump out his liberal ideology.
Liberal ideology? Do you not know what the fuck this movie is about?
@@Tizoc69 Watch it again. The movie is free of political idiology. Hell, Richard Hooker who wrote the book was a conservative.
@@blacbraun bull fucking shit - read what ROBERT ALTMAN said about it - you’re beyond off base
@@blacbraun I tried responding to you, but apparently RUclips didn’t like what I was gonna write, read what Robert Altman and Ring Lardner Junior set out to do and you will know that it absolutely has political ideology attached to it - they even criticize hooker

Deja vous video Dani deja vous headquarters
I Considering the description of this video, and the comparison of the movie with the TV series, it's interesting to note that MASH author H. Richard Hornberger (pen name Richard Hooker) enjoyed the film but had little love for the TV series. This was primarily due to the fact that he envisioned Hawkeye Pierce as politically conservative, not the flagrant liberal portrayed by Alan Alda. He didn't like the moralizing either, which detracts from the whole point he was trying to make about the extremes people will go to in order to stay sane when they live under extreme conditions.
I watched an interview w/ Robert Altman who stated the he was not a fan of the tv series either. In the movie you never saw the war only the results and you never saw the enemy. It the tv show brown people with the narrow eyes became the enemy, quite a racist thing.
Alan Alda did an amazing job with the character..and I didn't like it a bit. I prefer the original. Even so I think Alda was very talented in his portrayal. The series was very, very, watered down. Eventually becoming simply a podium for leftist politics.
So true the movie is much better than that TV show. and the Moralizing got worse when BJ Hunnicut showed up. He and Hawkeye walked around with their nose in the air along with Col Potter. Yuck! Sometimes I couldn't stand it.
