    Demo audio test with Orange Drop capacitors in three differend values 0,022uf 0,033uf 0,047uf clean without fx with a Squier Jazzmaster on a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 soundcard.
    In the first test [1:43] you can hear the difference if you boost the tremble with some equalizer on good speakers or headphones the 0,022uf have more highs.
    in the second test [4:12] you can cleary hear the 0.047 is more bassy.

      So in the demo at 1:43, is the tone knob on full? That's what I'm assuming. I still hear a difference. Some assume that if the tone knob is on ten, then the capacitor value shouldn't matter, but I'm of the other way of thinking...I think that some of the signal is still getting through the variable resistor and interacting with the tone capacitor even when the tone knob is on ten.

    • @Kyle-sg4rm
      @Kyle-sg4rm 4 года назад +5

      Haha, yep! And another one of the most common things, that quickly becomes very irritating after a few videos, is when people (bless them) test a distortion, or overdrive, or fuzz, etc, and use it through the distortion channel of their amp and/or turn the gain of the pedal way up and never even touch on the low gain, high volume settings, which are often the sweet zone (depending on what you're going for and what the circuit is able to do, how it's setup, etc)...treble knob tends not to make it far past 50% either...........
      "Ok, here's my clean channel".....*cue muddy distorted sound*........"Now here's the pedal switched on"......*cue absolute muck*

    • @Kyle-sg4rm
      @Kyle-sg4rm 4 года назад

      I mean, it's difficult to offer everyone a demo of a pedal, or whatever, where it's the same/similar setup (amp, guitar, etc) and it's played in a similar style that the viewer intends to use it for...... But shit...Why not start with the most basic and gradually increase it? And if you don't cover the most intense settings, for whatever reasons, at least people can extrapolate it. It seems a far more broad and accurate test standard for 5-20min videos.
      Speaking of that... to get 20mins in and still be wanting to reach through the screen, knock-out the presenter and commandeer the effect unit.....
      I guess the neo-traditional mission down to the nearest music shop, test shit yourself approach, actually saves alot of grief in hindsight!

      Exactly and i have no idea why everyone says the opposite of that statement. I have heard something about “no-load” pots that in theory take the cap out of circuit when the tone control is not rolled off but i think 9 out of 10 people don’t use those pots. So the caps will have an effect.

    Great! This is how a comparison should be done. I think I like the 0,22 sound more than the "correct" 0,47. They are less muddy.
    I have two P90s in order to solder into a Hollowbody guitar that now have two Humbuckers and I'm not sure if I need to replace the capacitors. It saves some job if I just solder the new P90s to the incoming cables instead of taking all components out of the F-hole. Ok, the result is most important but if the the difference between 0,22 and 0,47 is VERY suddle maybe I can keep those already in place. I listen to advice though. I'm not even sure I like the more bassy sound with 0,47. One reason to change from HB to P90 is to get another sound, better mids, less bass. I record music a lot and know how guitars basstones often have to be cleaned up anyways in competition with bass, keboard, song etc. The bittest issue is if 0,47 gets more harsh on the top, I don't like that.

    I put a 221 orange disc capacitor in a Tele I made. You can get some great tones with it. Also I have a humbucker in the bridge and a strat single coil in the neck (no cover) with 250k pots. First tele style guitar I actually love. It voices very well and is Douglas Fir with a maple neck and fret board. For my 2nd build I like how it came out.
    Also for anyone interested a tele can be made from 1.5 inch thick wood for a lighter and thinner body with only a few minor adjustments to the control cavity pocket by making it a little shallower. This allows for a lot of upper fret access especially if you put a 20 degree angle on the area the plate goes on the back to thin out the material a little more (the angle is like how Schecter does on some guitars). If it has a term it cannot be done since the trem block will stick out the back. So grabbing the structural fir from Lowes and Ace Hardware works just fine. I accidentally found this out because when buying a 2x4 I measured it at home and it turned out to only be 1.5 inches thick.
    Good video.

    i have this exact VM Squire Jazzmaster and the secret sauce at least for me in the lead circuit is 1Meg Tapered Pots (CTS) and .033 caps, I can easily dial back on the tone when I need to and I do use the Rhythm Circuit for reaching jazzy style tones. I always scratch my head when I see guitarist tape off the rhythm circuit as many think it's too complicated, to me it's an added bonus to have the option. Anyways, killer clip and info !!

    Excellent demonstration. When the cap in my VM Jazzmaster went bad my guitar repair guy replaced it with a .033uF, and I've fallen in love with the sound. When you roll it off it emphasizes the mids while attenuating the bass and treble. When I built the Esquire diagram in a DIY Tele kit, i had a 0.047uf cap on the tone pot and a 0.022uf on the third position of the 3-way switch and with the tone on 0, I heard the difference right away between the 2nd and 3rd positions.

    Actually, different brands or materials of the cap won't have any effect on the tone. The cap value is the only thing that matters. But each cap have tollerance rating (from +- .1% until +80%/-20%), that might result in you getting different actual values when you compare caps with the same written values.
    Edit: i was wrong and corrected by @Dominic Luciano in the reply below

    • @DominicMLuciano
      @DominicMLuciano 3 года назад +2

      This isn't completely true. Yes, the value has the most effect on tone. But different capacitor brands and materials, as well as type, all have an effect on the final tone, even though it's just bleeding those frequencies to ground. Different cap constructions, materials, and types all affect the harmonics and sub-harmonics that the capacitor will pass, which affects the final sound, even if the affected frequencies are above 16kHz or below 100Hz. That's why some people say certain caps cause "scooped mids" or "glassy treble" or "punchy bass". It all has to do with (sub)harmonics, which are a direct result of the cap type, brand, and construction. Source: I'm an engineering scientist and do this stuff for a living.

      @@andrewflanders262 Thats not at all applicable here. A pot is pretty imperfect, and when you have your tone pot at 10, with lets say a 500k ohm pot theres still maybe 3-4% of the pots value on the side thats supposed to be zero. Thats why no load pots where invented, They completely disconnect the whipper from the rest of the pot when they are put on 10, so there wouldn't be any difference no matter what caps he used. But with normal pots there still will be a difference when your tone knob is at zero.

    Lindy Fralin said to get the best “wah” type effect from rolling a tone is to use a 0.05 in the bridge . He was using single coils though . I don’t know if this applies to a bucker in the bridge but the pronounced ‘Wah wah’ thing is what I’m going for . And please note .. none of them do anything unless you are rolling your tone and volume knobs . Any video that compares caps without doing whole rolling the tone and volume is pointless .. it’s crazy I even have to say that 🥴

    Thanks for this, so basically on my particular guitar I need a higher cap on the bridge and a lower cap on the neck.

      7byseven first of all I could be wrong in saying this, but the capacitors are for the pots not the pickups. Sooo it’s going to change the sound of both pickups equally. I get what you’re say and man for a second it was a great idea, one that I also wanted to do. But then I had to think about the diagram. I want a twang bright bridge and a mellow full neck sound. Let me know if you find out anything contrary to what I supposed. Thanks.

    It really seems that the .022 has the most useful and full tone on all settings, plus an interesting vocal wha sound when you sweep... I can't say that would be true in humbuckers, but for bright singles, it's always been the one for me... plus ideally you want to approximate the humbucker tonality with the singles... and it seems to have the most versatile tone in that sense too. Strats have a great ability to distort tube amps with the tone rolled back.

      this jazzmaster have single coil pickups the affinity have humbuckers and its different situation, i gues they have 0.022uf if you open up you see in the cap something like 223J

  • @rutiger6901
    @rutiger6901 4 года назад

    Excellent video. Thank you for your time and trouble. What I take away from it is that I should not bother changing capacitors. The difference made would be not worthwhile. On the other hand, I'm listening to the demo on cellular fone. Pathetic junk as far as sound reproduction goes. AND really, a man should try a new one on his own guitar. They're cheap, it's an easy procedure and lots of folks say it makes a difference. They can't all be wrong.

    Get your facts correct! Capacitance does use Farads however the symbol you showed was micro Farads. (The correct symbol has a long 'tail' on the right side of a small u. Caps also come in nano (n), pico(p) and milli(m)

    • @StamatisStabos
      @StamatisStabos  4 года назад +1

      people use u because they dont have the μ the keyboard the "μ" is a letter from the greek alpha-beta μικρό>micro μουσική>music μωρό>moron etc
