Been interested in learning lighting design just for fun. You are awesome steve! You make it easy and simple to understand. Hope to build a simple set up at home now! Keep it up! Love the vids!
@@LearnLizard your videos reached The Netherlands (my country of origin). They’re the best out there. I’m trying to learn DMX for some live events and you seem to have the best explanation.
Thank you for the Knowledge!!!! I did everything on this channel I’m posting from learning how to set up Lights from your channel. I’ve learned a lot from this channel!!!!! Thank you soooo much !!!!!!
way cool! love the videos and keep them up! I understand dmx and lighting programming so much better now. Thank you for putting time into these. YOU ROCK
@@LearnLizard wish I knew more about lighting.... guitarist turned to the dark side buying synths/sequencers and thinking with some wash-pars and lasers I could do a one-person synth and light show....... Could a hardware sequencer trigger a scene via a CC note in a song sequence via midi ???? (Hands free light show) curious as to if I can “meld” the light controlling into my synth control as I have a Keystep Pro and a Beatstep Pro in the rig...... I do not use Ableton, just hardware sequencers.
I love it! In my opinion, custom built controllers are the best because they always fit your specific needs, and often they can have more advanced features that you wouldn't usually find on smaller consoles (and buying a GrandMA isn't an option) :D
I couldn't agree with you more. This little controller set-up was inexpensive to put together and works perfectly for my needs. Thanks for the comment and appreciate you watching!
This is a great video! I'm trying to learn DMX lighting and your videos are really helpful. Could you please make a video of discussing on how you mapped midi controllers? I wanted to try this with my unused akai midi controller. But I dont know where to start.
Thanks for those kind words and that’s a great idea for a video- mapping midi works a little differently depending on the software you are using but once a controller is set up it works very well. Appreciate you watching
sir eDMX1 PRO and enttec - dmx usb pro dongle, usb to dmx interface (rdm) 512 ch, 1 universe is it the same? they that can be used with vibrio apps, that I can imitate the idea of your set up, what is the difference between 5 pin and 3 pin?? thanks for the answer
An iPad setup like this doesn't work with usb-to-dmx interfaces (unless you jump through lots of hoops). It needs an ethernet-to-dmx interface with a router. The difference between the 5 pin or the 3 pin jack just depends on which cable you have or plan to use. (I've found that the 5 pin is much more common) Thanks for watching!
My compliments Steve - your videos appear to be the most reliable and clear out there. As I still don't own a laser but I'm planning to in the future I think the first step are a pair of googles. Could you please provide a link for a non-chinese set in a normal budget ? Thank you and best Regards.
Hi and thanks for the kind words! Here is a link to buy Laser Safety Glasses made for laser shows. I'm not sure where they are manufactured: lasershowprojector.com/products/laser-safety-glasses If you google "laser safety glasses" you will find lots of information and glasses which cost considerably more (as well as less) than these.
Hi and thanks for the kind words. I program the Arturia Beatstep with free software (on my Mac) called "MIDI Control Center" and the Korg nanoKontrol with free software called "KORG KONTROL Editor" Thanks for watching!
Hi Steve, good job, I followed your solution but it doesn't satisfy me one hundred percent. Unfortunately, Vibrio has limited possibilities. It's a pity that app only has the two midi mapping option only for scenes. I would like it to be possible also for shows, tempo, sliders, in one word, complete midi mapping. The application itself, the interface and the ease of use are fine, but the options I mentioned above are missing. Or advise what application to use to make this possible with this hardware configuration ?
Thanks and agree Vibrio has limited MIDI functionality. Check out the app StageLight. It's inexpensive and there are way more options for MIDI (plus the developer is always adding features)
Hello, I Just tested the Stage Light app, I have hope that will be greater than Vibrio, However, there are a few issues that I don't know how to solve, such as the button illumination. Thanks for reply.
Thats a good question. I did it for a couple reasons. I happened to have both controllers already and I really like my Beatstep and understand how to program it. Also, they are both pretty small and I wanted my setup to be compact. If I was starting from scratch I'd probably get a controller with faders & knobs and use just one unit. Appreciate you watching!
Hi Steve, glad to see you are back! You always provide well taught and detailed videos. You have helped many humans! Any foot switch ideas for light control? I have a few Obey 40s, a BeatStep, 3 midi footswitch boards, a spare router, an older Apple TV streamer, an iPad mini 4, a MacBook Pro late 2013 and a ton of lighting fixtures. Just not sure how I could hook up anything useful to run with midi foot switch boards? I have my hands full as a one man band. Thanks for your videos!
Hi and thanks for the kind words! I was planning to make a DMX foot switch video, but got diverted when I realized my MIDI foot switch only sends MIDI program change data and my Obey 40 and Vibrio on the iPad only respond to MIDI note data. If your foot board sends note data you can trigger any scene or chase easily, otherwise you need a hardware box that converts data (expensive) or an app (like Luminair on the iPad) that is CoreMIDI compliant, or responds to MIDI program change.
LearnLizard cool Steve & thanks very much for the info! Not sure which type my midi floor board footswitches are? Maybe I can find info in a manual online. Rocktron midi mate floor switcher, Behringer FCB1010 floor switcher which will be modified with an eprom firmware chip that is supposed to make the footswitches operate like guitar stompbox switches. And also have an old ART X-15 Ultra Foot switcher. So I’m hoping that one or all of these floor switches would plug into the Obey 40 midi and provide basic on/off capabilities for various Chauvet Scorpions & similar Blizzard units as well as LED par cans etc. Thanks again!
@@RevoKC The FCB1010 can send MIDI note info so you could use it to trigger scenes on the Obey 40. I wish it was smaller like the X-15 or Midi Mate, but they don't sent Note data.
LearnLizard WOW Steve, thanks so much! You really helped me just now by confirming that at least the Behringer unit will work. Agreed, the size & weight of the board is not appealing. The Midi Mate would be ideal. Since I am not much of a tech savvy guy, I can do fairly simple mods which also includes bruises, cuts, abrasions & burns from my soldering iron, lol... So the eprom mod on the Behringer is simple & about $25 for the chip. Haven’t done the mod yet. Ideally I hoped to just run a midi cable between a foot switcher & one or more consoles & just daisy chain all lights. So mostly just on/off options with foot switches. Maybe that is dreaming? If you invent mods for what I’m trying to do, there would probably be a market for that. Looking forward to your footswitch video if you do one!
how to trigger momentary light flashes from a midi controller (my vdrums) via budget gear and incorporating the app to send via bluetooth to chauvel BT and linked to non-bluetooth standard LED pightbars and cans?
Hmm- thats a good challenge! Here's a video with some ideas about triggering lights from drums: ruclips.net/video/0uMbA5NeFCQ/видео.html. As far as sending bluetooth, Vibrio can't do that so you would need to find another app solution to do that. Would be curious to hear back what you figured out and thanks for watching!
