I feel gibson should focus on making quality instruments at affordable prices and stop pointing fingers at people who make higher quality products with similar designs. In short Fuck corporate executives at gibson.

In music news from me..I bought a banjo. It’s a 60’s no name 5 string with a one piece Brazilian Rosewood neck and vintage Kluson and Grover tuner. This isn’t a banjo channel, I know. Just wanted to share😀
Fender doesn't need a 7 string model - for these models they could just use Charvel, Jackson or EVH sub-brands. After all it's just a logo on the headstock if it's made in a customshop anyway.
Pretty soon, Gibson will start going after customers for modifying their Gibsons. I don’t know who has the “chip” on their shoulder to keep suing everyone in the guitar business, but they don’t understand that they are destroying all credibility to the brand.
Howdy cob, I was a Washburn dealer in Australia from when I opened my store back in mid 2020 until about the end of 2023, so happy to clear up some info for you. Washburn certainly isn't dead and they occasionally put out new models, but their output definitely seems more focused on acoustics these days. Down here the distributor mainly focuses on the acoustics, but I've had everything from USA to low-end import, and everything in-between through the shop over the years, along with banjos. The other models they also focus on are the Michael Sweet Parallaxe V, and the Nuno N4 and Nele models. I can tell you that pound for pound, their import acoustics are great, and at one point were the best value-for-money Also, regarding your timeline - US Music Corp didn't take over Washburn in 2002, it was actually a reverse takeover where Washburn purchased US Music Corp, and began to use that name for the expanded group. In 2009 US Music Corp was purchased by a Canadian company called Jam Industries, and in 2018 Jam Industries was purchased by Exertis, a company within Irish multi-national DCC's Technology division, with the company now known as Exertis/Jam, and also taking in Stampede (a Buffalo, NY-based AV distributor), JB&A (a San Francisco, CA-based AV distributor), and The Music People (a Hartford, CT-based AV distributor and owner of the On Stage Stands brand). Hope this helps.
fender have been doing 7 strings since the 80s in the early 2000s a squire stagemaster 7 is when they built the last seven string it was more of a squire brand thing if anything but they need to do this to keep relevant they can't depend on Jackson and charvel to save them
Love the Fret Buzz name. You should get an energy drink brand to make a drink called Fret Buzz for guitarists - very serious! We are night owls who need help staying awake. Why not an energy drink for musicians who have fretted instruments?! Great reporting! Had not heard some of this. I was worried NAMM would end up passing the big brands a freebie. Ever since they pulled out, I’ve been predicting that letting them make booths for free would be the only way to get them to return. That’s a darn shame because the smaller brands are essentially getting stomped on by collectively bearing the financial brunt that these larger brands can easily afford. I’m guessing NAMM is banking on the potential that letting Gibson, Fender, and PRS attend for free will draw additional attendees - more ticket sales might make up for the lack of big brands paying their dues. I guess time will tell if that pays off and whether any smaller brands will pull out - but I don’t think small brands can afford not to attend despite this unfair move because trade shows really help them make professional connections and get new eyeballs on their products.
If Fender can figure out a way to charge $10K for a 7 string Strat, they will! AND, I wasn't aware of JML guitars - I looked at their builds - amazing! I'd rather buy one of their offerings over a new Gibson any day.
Gibson allowed other companies to make copies of Vs and Explorers for decades. Any protection they applied for should be rejected, just as it was when Fender tried this in the 80s. You can’t retroactively protect designs that you didn’t care enough to protect in the first place. Rickenbacker was smart enough to do that. Also as a small builder myself … just stop copying Gibson and Fender. Do something original.
Love that Iceman and the Knife Drop pedal. They sound great together. An Iceman is on my bucket list. I've been watching you a long time. I liked this video format. I like the opinion ones, also. Keep up the great work.

I have an Eastwood Corona which is an SG shape. They didn’t make it for long, but they continued to make LP Special double-cut and non-reverse Firebird shapes for years. Not sure if they got a C&D or not.
I actually believe that Fender might actually start making production 7-strings. I fully support Fender doing such a thing because, quite frankly, I like Fender. A lot.
JML getting that cease and desist was a bit of a gut punch for me. I've been following them for a while, and I've been wanting to commission a Flying V from them eventually, but now I can't.
As a "legacy" buyer, Fender's idea of innovation is a few decades late to the table. That said, Fender customers who are looking for a 7 string probably already have a preference for 7 string manufacturers, be it Ibanez, Chapman, Schechter etc. Also, whatever happened to the only protected shapes being headstocks? Body shapes should be more or less free to use as we all know who originally made those shapes anyway and look to the headstock to see who made a particular example, and in that, we're not in the 80s anymore where every single cut has an open book
Buying in US from Europe isn’t interested anymore due to exorbitant shipping costs. Haven’t orderd at stewmac in years. When is Gibson going to sue Chinese manufacturers making knockoffs? Probably never. In the meantime I bought a Burny with all the Les Paul bells and whistles here in a local store. Going after small builders is just ignorant.
This is the problem with guitarists. A thoughtful, knowledgeable post from an industry insider about Washburn gets 1 like and a post saying I bought a banjo gets 16. You lot are embarrasing 😢
Of course Gibson werent the first to make a V shape or a few others. This has been raised before by rare guitar collectors. Even the single-cut LP shape was done some 20 years earlier by a Hawaiian guitar maker. Gibson is aware of these other, earlier brands, and hopes other newer brands aren't. Gibson should be far more concerned with sorting their QC issues, as effectively they're a dead brand. As for Washburn - they made some of the best acoustics back in the day. Its a brand I miss tbh.
Ahh, yes. So "Maestro" Alex Gregory is not holding Fender by their balls regarding 7 string Strats anymore? That Alex Gregory walking meme claims to be the "INVENTOR" of the 7 string stratocaster 😂😂😂😂😂

Washburn never stopped being a brand or branded guitar. Washburn is owned by U.S. Music Corp which is a subsidiary of Canadian Corporate Group Exertis JAM. The guitars are cheap Chinese and Indonesian Manufacture, same as all the other cheap guitars on the market. These Corporations are brand aggregators. U.S. Music Corp owns Washburn, Oscar Schmidt, Parker, Jay Turser and Hamer. Not saying cheap guitars are bad guitars either, but if you want guaranteed quality buy a Nazareth Built Martin because that is about all that's left. Or a Yamaha, their quality control has been excellent since the 70's. But as a minimum, buy an "A Series'. For electrics, American built Fender or Gibson. Honestly I don't think Fender getting back around to making a product class that has been around for 35 years really is contrary to them being a legacy brand.

Sorry but I don't agree on your take on the StewMac. If the goods were seized at the customs (you said Swiss but in the doc it says Italian and since I can't find any intel I can't understand where the goods were coming from and going to) and then shipped back evidently the documentation produced by StewMac was sufficient to clear all the doubts. If we're talking about Swiss customs there's a high chance it's just a matter of bureaucracy (know it by firsthand experience through my job: they're a pain in the asso) but conflict minerals are a serious things. Let's not downplay it.
Unique? Squier had a short lived line of 7-Strings prior. Fender and most of the other legacy brands simply do not innovate. They haven’t released any new interesting shapes in years, while small brands are finding so many ways to go outside the box (Cream Guitars is a prime example). ALL companies are required by law to enforce their intellectual property rights or lose them. Gibson MUST issue C&D orders to those who infringe on their IP rights. And, if that fails, escalate to a suit. Every company has to do the same thing if it wants to retain its IP rights.
That 7 string Fender didn't take 7 years to develop; it took 7 years of convincing.
Right? 😅
37 years late to market. We never see singlecut 7s either, silly idea.

what exactly is the purpose of a 7 or 8 string?
To play lower pitches. A 7 string has a low B. It’s a baritone and standard guitar combined. An 8 string adds a low F#.

If the thing isn't protected in the first place though, what's their basis for telling somebody else to stop building it?
Too bad they don't own that IP.
