      But you do realize, if a sensor is out resolving a lens, it's just diminishing returns and the image won't actually be softer lol. If the lens is out resolved it will look the same as the R10, if not out resolved you'll have more detail, that's it. It's not a net negative.

    • @simonthibodeau7082
      @simonthibodeau7082 2 месяца назад +2

      @@justinburley8659 hard to compare as they are 2 different systems, different copies etc., lots of variables uncontrolled.
      By the very definition of the physics tho, "over resolving" a lens, can never truly give you a worse image than lower mp, all else being equal of course, assuming the sensors are equally good.
      Think of it as "you're wasting pixels", not "those extra pixels are softening the image" which cannot be true.
      Fuji forums went nuts when their 40mp sensors came out for this exact non-issue. Yes it means technically you are not getting "the most" out of the high mp sensor on some lenses. But going as far as saying high mp will look worse, does not make much sense.
      In a nutshell, if optical sharpness is gonna be the bottleneck of IQ, increasing sensor resolution will give you more and more diminishing returns, not give you an actual, worse looking image.
      Of course, if NONE of your lenses in your kit can make use of higher mp because none are sharp enough, one might say it makes little sense to go for high mp, so in a sense the R10 is a better "match" and better choice.
      Still, this lens will perform better overall on an R7 (since it is better in other regards), and will certainly not look worse, at best they will look fairly equal in IQ.
      In short, high mp on softer lens is just neutral, not a pro nor a con. Only con maybe being, your file sizes are larger "than they would have needed to be" to fully resolve it.
      Does that make sense? 😅 Hopefully I made it somewhat clear. Btw I do think price/quality wise, many people are better off with the R10 considering how much cheaper it is. I'm not thrashing the R10, many reasons to love it, I'm just saying, objectively, saying it renders softer lenses BETTER is an exaggeration and not true.

    Thanks Chris. Really enjoy your reviews and, in fact, bought this lens on your recommendation.
    Quick question. I've got an R10 and I'd like to pair the Sigma 18-50mm with a low-aperture background obliterating prime portrait lens. Don't really mind what focal length - will go up to 85 so long as it can take nice head-shots. My budget is about £500-600, and I'm happy to go used. Happy to use an EF mount adaptor also and don't mind the weight. Any recommendations for the best, sharpest glass I can get for the money?

      @@Louis-zk4bq So I've done a bit more research. For sharpness I think canons first party rf 50mm lens is probably the best bargain. As for native RF at around glass at 30-35mm that isn't crazy expensive, the choice is either buying the image stabilised canon 35mm 1.8 prime, or waiting for the sigma 1.4. The cannon lens is sharper, though it's a full frame lens so I'm not sure how that sharpness translates to crop. The canon lens also has stabilisation but it's about £200 more expensive. The sigma 1.4 has the wider aperture and a better price, though no stabilisation - and it's not out till later this year. I'm not sure how the EF glass measures up honestly and I'd need to do more research on the sigma art primes. I'd be glad to have more input so @christopherfrost do chime in if you've got any advice.

And yeah i agree with you, if i ever really need something to shoot portraits with a soft bokeh, i'll probably consider the rf 50mm 1.8 or the sigma 56 1.4. I dont really need fast lenses on the 30-35mm focal range.
      So now i need to choose between the RFS 55-210 and other EF lenses i could adapt on my r50 (EF-S 55-250 IS STM, EF 70-200 f/4 L IS, ...). I'll keep you posted

    Hi Christopher, I use the Canon R7 with the EF-S 17-55, would you say it's worth upgrading to the Sigma 18-50. Unlike the Sigma, the Canon has a stabilizer and also a continuous f/2.8 aperture. What do you think?
    VG Thomas

    • @simonthibodeau7082
      @simonthibodeau7082 2 месяца назад +1

      Having used the 17-55 on R7 I'm guessing significant improvements in AF, and honestly the pure IBIS on the R7 might be better than the old OIS on the 17-55 (which wasn't good).
      Counterintuitively, some old EF glass have such mediocre OIS, that NON-OIS lenses perform better on just IBIS, than the bad sync stab on those. The sigma 18-35 and rf50mm all had better stab than the EFS 17-55 for me. You cannot use that efs17-55 on pure IBIS (no way to set it that way), but I'm pretty sure it'd be better too.
      Imo a worthy upgrade if not just for just how much lighter it is. But it's definitely a comparison I'd like to see!
      My guess is, if you do video, definitely upgrade, for stills, only worth it if you value having a lighter lens, but I wouldn't expect significantly better stills.

The old EF-S lens has image stabilization as a bonus, however it is obviously an older system so the R7’s IBIS alone can probably outperform it quite easily.
