Thank you for another excellent video of information and perspective. I am so glad that I have cellared deep on a variety of blends.

As an American bacco pipe enthusiast, it breaks my heart to see how our industry here is so easily dispensed with. Sutliff really produced a lot of my favorite varieties directly and indirectly and the stuff they’re choosing to keep going with really wasn’t their best. It’s a downer. I really hope some of the third party varieties will come back in the future.

STG more or less now confirmed that you will get a larger variety of blends from Mac Baren available to your in the future when they take over production in Assens. Hopefully this will be true in the end!

I happened across a tip today that one of the online tobacco retailers over here had more of most of the HH blends. I soon converted more of my money into cellar stock 😂. Yes, hopefully we may see some of these on sale over here in the future. But I suppose that a tin in the cellar is probably worth more than two that may be available in the future...

What a refreshing relief to hear. My thoughts will go to our fellow pipesmokers overseas who will miss the many discontinuing products in the future. I must say, that i had hoped to get a chance to taste the presbytarian mixture before it left the market. Hopefully i might come by it someday or perhaps something resembling. Thank you Thomas for doing the research. It brings a lot of reasurrance for some of the newbies here 😊👍

Thanks for this incredibly detailed breakdown! It’s a relief to hear a more nuanced perspective, especially regarding the Danish and EU markets. The distinction between the US situation and the continued (for now) production in Europe gives a bit of hope, though it’s clear the long-term outlook is uncertain. I really appreciated the context on the history of Mac Baren, STG, and the challenges with niche production in a shrinking industry. It’s bittersweet to think about these iconic brands being reshape or potentially lost entirely soon...
You’re absolutely right about stocking up on the original Mac Baren blends while they’re still available. I'll get some soon hopefully.. Thanks for sharing man!

This breaks my heart. Sutliff was pretty exclusive for me as a user. When I first started, being able to buy bulk 1oz or 2 of a blend kept me exploring new stuff.

Mr. Thomas: Great video. One thing to consider re closing of Sutliff facility is how much the decision may have been driven by STG’s American tax exposure. I have experience in a different industry, but, in a similar situation, the company I worked for at the time was allowed to use some of the depreciable value of equipment against their overall tax liability. It sounds counterintuitive, but the code was written to give an incentive to write-off hard assets because they were worth more as a credit to apply.

Thank you for all your efforts in helping us learn more of this slow developing story. I saw the same as you did in STG official announcement that the Mac Baren factory will close late 2026 to early 2027. What it didn't say is what would be the distribution of what MB still produces. I'm happy the Europe will still be getting some the the MB products and I can only hope that what MB sold the the USA will still be offered. MB did use Sutliff as there USA distributor/importer, and I assume that will go away but STG also has a USA distributor location so not sure what of MB we will still receive. Great job Thomas for all your work. Take Care and God Bless

Hopefully MB in Denmark will stay in full production for a few years time. And by then hopefully STG will take over must of our beloved blends. Take care and thanks for joining!

thank you for your perspective, Thomas. The reality is, barring some crazy occurance, pipe tobacco will continue to be produced less and blends are going away. We must continue to show the market that there is demand for these products, or learn to grow our own, i suppose. Eventually if things go the way they are at the moment, government regulation will strangle this industry. I hope and pray for a revival of pipe smoking and that it will become more accepted in society (speaking as an American living in Germany). I do see more of it here in Europe...

    • @thomasebdrup

Market as a whole is decreasing. At one point we might see a slight increase in the amount of new pipesmokers. But the industry changes.

I'd be very disappointed if the 400 and 403 went away, and I think it would be stupid financially in my opinion?

This is what's annoyed me the most about these kinds of deals. They say they're axing the lowest sellers...but how can things sell when they're not offered to consumers? The HH line for example, I truly believe that blends like Old Dark Fired, Burley Flake, Bold Kentucky would sell well internationally if they were available for sale.

You need to have a look at Chat with Leonard Wortzel from STG on the MacBaren/Sutliff acquisition by Big Apple Pipes channel its long as it goes for over 2 hr. Leonard confirmed that what you said, not all blends are being discontinue in Europe it will be a more phased process. My question would have been, why was it necessary to close down so quickly in the US? But I think you asked that as STG just wanted to get rid of the little small production runs that sutliff did as STG didn't need them and believe rightly or wrongly that it wasn't profitable for that side to continue. Leonard did say that some blends maybe brought back but the logistics purchasing tobacco, the blending and all the other requirements to produce the same blend is extremely hard and takes a lot of man power that can be used else where in the STG company.

Min tobakshandler fortæller, at Rattray's måske også er på vej væk fra det danske marked. Angiveligt fordi den hidtidige importør ikke magter besværet længere. o tempora, o mores.

It’s not STG’s fault. It’s the fault of the US, not protecting its industries. Don’t blame the Danes, blame the US government. If we grow the tobacco but, increasingly, buy that tobacco from foreign firms then we have now become an economic colony.

It looks like STG is making tobacco available by geographical location given local market conditions. I think your analysis is accurate. Sutliff's model doesn't fit at all with STG's model, so Sutliff was destroyed. Since I, here in the US, basically bought only Sutliff tobacco -- I've been cut off by STG. Unless I wish to smoke Captain Black. My policy going forward is to never buy another STG product again. I've decided to buy and process my own raw leaf. Many are already doing that here in the States. I will also only buy from the Laudisi group and any small tobacconists who make their own blends. In my opinion, STG delenda est.
