3 Mistakes I Made With My First Online Course

My first course launched back in 2010 to the sad tune of about $170.
My most recent course launch did over $170,000. It's safe to say I've gotten a lot better at this thing.
But in thinking back to that original online course that started it all for me I can identify three critical mistakes I made that seriously hampered my revenue.
Granted I had a much smaller audience back then, but even so, I could have easily made more money had I avoided these three mistakes - and so can you with your first (or tenth!) online course.
Let's take a time machine back almost 10 years ago and learn from Graham's stupidity and ignorance 🙂

I’m a teacher that works in a super niche. It’s a topic I’ve worked a Ph.D. in, but this whole digital learning curve and giving myself permission to charge money for something that is built because I truly care have been my biggest hurdles. I appreciate these free videos not because I’m a freeloader, but because I’m sincerely not in a place where I can invest in this...YET. I’m using Streamyard and will likely use your approach of membership and online course because of the breadth of topics and my (also) two brands I am working to develop. I’ve listened to two of your long podcasts today. And I believe it’s divine timing. You’re a teacher. A true teacher at heart. Bra-vo! Bra-vo! Bra-vo! Keep doing what you’re doing

    Fantastic video, Graham.
Q; when you’re choosing which type of scarcity model to put in place what are the deciding factors?
For example, you currently have a launch with Jacquire king and it’s a closed door model. What made you choose that model instead of say, keeping it Evergreen and adding additional bonuses, or raising the price after a period of time?
Is it because that is the strongest scarcity model to drive sales up?
(I know that launch is still in motion at the moment so I’m not sure if it’s something you can be fully transparent about right now, so I’m sorry for asking if that’s the case)

    • @GrahamCochrane
      @GrahamCochrane  5 лет назад +1

You got it - closing the doors is the most effective form of scarcity so it drives more sales. I do this with some products and not with others. The combination works well.

Could I still launch my course on Facebook ads instead of using an email list? Especially since my blog is quite new. What are options for people like me who don't have a large audience yet what I have to teach us something that the world is in desperate need?

I tried a couple of your forms which were supposed to provide PDF and things in exchange of email address. But, the only thing these forms do is taking the email address and displaying different errors when they need to provide the resource. I thought it may be a bug at the first time. But, trying multiple forms on your web pages and facing the same strategy with different scenarios I'm now thinking maybe it's just a shit show to collect people's emails.
Maybe you consider yourself smart at marketing, but if you knew how easy it is to take down a frozen target on the internet, you wouldn't scam people with this much peace of mind. I'll give one of your forms another try in a while and if it still is a scam gate, the only one responsible for the consequences is the one who's built and promoted them!

@@GrahamCochrane I'm halfway through watching the second video from you. I like your long videos. I attended the 2020 Grow with Video Live conference, and one of my next steps coming out of that conference was to launch a mini course. I found your mini course video to be extremely helpful, so much so that I wrote about some of the highlights of your video onto the unofficial private Grow with Video Live Facebook group that was made by attendees. I've also shared your video with someone else who is now taking steps to work on a mini course. In addition, I shared your video with my friend who is working with me to launch our mini course by Thursday, December 31st at 11:59:59pm.
We're striving to get a rough draft part of the course done for feedback by November 1st.
What I especially found extremely helpful in your mini course video was:
      1. Getting a definition on how long is a mini course
      2. Understanding the psychology of pricing. I had no idea how to price our course.
      3. Thinking about added bonuses like audio files & pdfs.
      Thanks so much!
