    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Truvy (Dolly Parton) prepares for Shelby's funeral, and Spud (Sam Shepard) decides to go with her to offer his sympathies.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The title refers to those seemingly frail Southern belles who survive any and all deprivations through whims of iron. Robert Harling's original stage play was set exclusively in a Louisiana beauty parlor where an all-female cast of characters laughed, cried and compared menfolk. The film expands the playing field by including scenes at picnics, hospitals and the like, and by visually depicting the males who never appeared in the stage version. Dolly Parton plays the goodnatured beauty-shop owner, while Shirley MacLaine is the cantankerous town eccentric, decked out in grungy overalls and speaking fluent Trash. Well-to-do Sally Field bravely endures several assaults to her sensibilities, not the least of which is the illness (and subsequent death) of daughter Julia Roberts. The performances are first-rate, with the possible exception of Daryl Hannah's overemphatic portrayal of a gawky hairdresser. The film stumbles a bit in its depiction of the male characters as fools and deadheads, and in the final overlong hospital scenes involving the comatose Roberts, which play like a road company version of Terms of Endearment. Otherwise, Steel Magnolias is a prime example of ensemble filmmaking, lovingly coordinated by director Herbert Ross. (Sidebar: Herbert Ross was reportedly rather rough on Julia Roberts, deriding her lack of experience. The rest of the female cast rallied around Roberts and told the director to lay off or pay the price).

I love this scene. Subtle. There are some men that cannot express their own feelings of love and fear. "Something like that ever happened to me, I don't know what I'd do." Translation: "I love you. I need you. And I need you to know it. " The fact that he wants to go with her to the funeral at all says everything. I just love the subtly here. SO MUCH SAID but so little spoken.

I thought it was beautiful. The audience isn’t exactly the biggest fan of him throughout the film and we aren’t intended to be. Then at the end we all learn that actually he loves her dearly.

Spud was a complex character. He didn’t come to the wedding, the Christmas special, and Truvy comes home to him sitting in front of the TV barely talking to her. She even complains he hasn’t done anything romantic with her in years. You’re thought to believe he was an indifferent and neglectful husband. But he really did love her and laid down his pride and doldrums for a day and came with her to the funeral.

I can't believe Herbert Ross criticized Dolly's acting on this film. Sam Shepard is giving her gold, but she's quietly nailing all the unsaid things happening in this scene.

I love this scene! You’re made to think Spud is just a typical depressed working man living a mid-life crisis and doesn’t care about his wife, but he opens up more by this scene and really cares about Truvy. Then he gives her an even nicer treat later on.

I loved Dolly's work in this movie. Sam was a stand out, too. Together they were fantastic in this scene, honestly my favorite in the whole movie. So much left unsaid; the silences between the words tell as much or more than the words themselves.
"What the hell is this for?"
    "It makes you pretty."

"The funniest movie that will make you cry"... I told my mom after watching it the first time with her that it was a roller coaster of emotions, even for a man's man like me... I was crying one minute, and dying laughing the next.... or vise versa... especially the last 30 minutes of the movie.

I think that Spud realized how much he took Truvy for granted. She was in many ways The "Breadwinner", of the Family and he pushed her away although he didn't mean to. Jackson & Shelby were more well off but it doesn't guarantee that you'll have your happily ever after.

I love how this scene really showed us how much Spud really cared for Truvy.
It's a very true statement to say that a lot of Southern Men, hell, men in general, don't really know how to express their emotions. Although Truvy and Spud's relationship might have gone a little lukewarm, it was her poise and expression, and the tears in her eyes that said that she understood what he was struggling to say, and that she still loved him dearly back.
Relationships in general aren't always passionate and fairy-tale like, but this is the most accurate depiction I've seen of two people who have decided to spend their lives together through thick and thin.

When my mother's water broke, I spent my entire 8th birthday writing down her contraction times for the doctor, then she ordered a pizza before going to the hospital. I watched this movie while I was writing the times down and, 22 years later, I am still not capable of watching this movie without crying.

I think it’s what makes this movie so magical. It’s an all star cast, so it’s no surprise they wanted to give each actor their spotlight. But it’s the way they somehow managed to flesh out the characters to the point that you can’t image their little crew with one of them missing. It’s why it hits you so hard when Shelby dies

Context: Dolly Parton’s character has been trying to get the husband to spend more time with her; she’s been lonely. But he’s depressed to be out of work and is pushing away/ neglecting her. So after another husband loses his wife in a very sudden way, Spud (husband in this scene) is finally realizing how emotional distant he’s been and how sad his wife has been feeling. After this , he makes an effort to be present more in their relationship and to support/show love towards his wife.
