Metta (Loving-Kindness): The Practice of Universal Love

  • Metta, also known as loving kindness, is an attitude of universal love that is radiated to all living beings in the world without discrimination. In Buddhist teachings it is said that there are four divine states of mind which are naturally and unceasingly experienced by those who are enlightened. They are metta (loving-kindness), compassion, joy and equanimity. Together they are called the Four Immeasurables or the Four Brahma-Viharas. By training in these states of mind through meditation we can tap into these divine states and create the causes for experiencing happiness now and in the future.
In this video I look at cultivating the first of these divine thoughts: metta. In particular, I describe what metta is, what are the advantages in practicing it, what are some of the obstacles that might prevent us from cultivating genuine loving-kindness, and I highlight some practical tips that we can employ to ensure our formal metta meditation practice is a success.

Thanks Stephen. I'm very happy to hear that my videos inspire you and that you enjoy them. :)
That's fantastic that you have developed that sort of mindfulness of your thoughts. It's only when we can 'see' them, that we can respond to them with wisdom instead of habit. ;) It's exactly what I'll be covering on the video of Right Mindfulness in the near future. Keep up the mindfulness practice - it's liberating!

I feel it's very important to use this same meditation for ourselves.
To set the goal outright to never react with anger will only lead to getting angry at ourselves for getting angry.
If we first allow ourselves the compassion to accept all thoughts we may have, whatever they may be, no matter what they may be, and accept all emotions/sensations we have in this same way, then loving others becomes second nature, for all is only reflection of ourselves.

Having watched all your videos in the recent past, I came back to this one. I think with more knowledge of the topics you discuss in your other videos make viewing this a second time seem more enlightening. There's a deeper understanding of it that I discovered was lacking when I watched it the first time. I suppose what I'm saying is that I find it helpful to view your lessons more than just once. But that goes for anything: it takes practice and continued instruction to "get it." :)
Thanks, Mindah, for such wonderful videos.

Thank you, Mindah-Lee for sharing your knowledge of the Buddha and his teachings. I have been a fan of Ajahn Brahm for about a year now - my first real introduction to Buddhism. Even though I had a feeling that you might know of him, you so gladdened my heart when you mentioned his name. I am quite suspect to what a lot of people pass off as true Buddhism today, i.e. Mindfulness, but you have my full confidence and look forward to learning and improving my life with your wisdom and metta.

Hi Mindah. Thank you so much for your videos. I watch all of them and they encourage and inspire me to meditate and practice. As a matter of fact, after watching this, I'm going to go "sit" "sat" and meditate for an hour or so upon it.
As my practice has grown, I am able to see that all my negative feelings are products of Ego and not my Self, even if I feel justified in my anger towards another. When those feelings arise, I still try to catch myself and say, "That's my Ego. That's not me."

I wonder how much "Metta" influenced the word "Meta" as in "beyond" or "transcendent?" Also, it's interesting how Maitri is related to the name Maitreya, the Future Buddha, to whom the Buddha addressed the second part of his "First Turning of the Wheel of the Law" sermon in Benares. Well, anyway, you make this learning and practice fun, and I thank you again! Cheers!

Loving Kindness! I am Jewish but G-d is found in all paths and beings! shalom! loving kindness the law of karma (good unto any being attracts good, bad unto any being attracts bad) is the most sound. respect all life, the true Judaism is very similar to much native American philosophy, Judaism is dynamic, we have to respect all spirits of life, and we must not blindly follow leaders but think for ourselves, maintaining morality following our heart not just instructions on a page, because the heart knows and is in constant connection to the divine, this is true Judaism.

This is something I'm having a very hard time with. How do I extend love and compassion to people that I know do not give that back to me and others? I try so hard to not be upset with the people around me, but they show time and time again I mean nothing in their lives. I can't get past the anger and sadness that arise when I try to extend love/compassion/understanding to these people. It makes me feel stupid and ignorant, sending love and kindness to people that openly show me how little I mean to them. How do I get past this?

    • @zain4019
      @zain4019 3 года назад +1

The first step is to stop resisting your anger, or any other emotion. How can we calm the storm if we are ourselves buffeting the waves?
Just allow all - allow all feelings - and remove yourself from the mind and into the body. There, just feel what the raw sensation is like. What is it just feel the raw sensation of what the mind calls anger? It is simply some heat and tightness in the body. Just stay with that. It will be overwhelming in some situations, but stay with it. Remember, leave aside thought. Let it be.
All will fade this way, and the love from which all rises will shine forth.
Rupert Spira has a great video called "Awareness cannot know fear". I highly recommend it. He guides a questioner through her own extremely agitated emotion, and the way he does so is wonderful.

    Hi Mindah,
Repetitive and obsessive indulgence in most spiritual dogmas , prayers, scripture reading and most rituals one may find uplifting, but in reality, they.are as useful as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic - it feels one is doing something useful but it makes no difference in the end - they sink. I am bemused and sometimes ponder, why precious time is wasted in the aforementioned acts and the dissecting of teachings in abundance , especially when Buddha has shown us the way by spending time beneath a Bodhi tree in a state of meditation to gain spiritual liberation - Nirvana. Shouldn’t serious meditation dominate our lives with only the accompanying teaching of the ‘Eight Fold Path’? In essence, what more is really needed to be a devout Buddhist?
I Enjoy encountering your radiant face Mindah. Too-da-loo Mike Watson

Another way to enhance compassion for others that unnecessarily harm us, is to understand the illusion of free will (i.e. if i went back in time i could have consciously done otherwise). However, every decision is preceded by a multitude of factors I had no control over. Therefore, i am merely a witness of my thoughts and actions. For example, I did not choose my parents, or the moment in history i was born, or the society or environment i grew up in, or my genetics, or the neurophysiology of my brain, yet these and many other unconscious variables precede every decision i make. Furthermore, thoughts merely appear in consciousness. I am not authoring them. I can't choose them before I think them. That would require that I think them, before I think them. (Sam Harris has some excellent RUclips videos on the illusion of free will). If I can't control my next thought and I don't know what it will be until it appears, where's my freedom of will? However, this does not make life fatalistic, it makes life deterministic. I cannot take credit for my talents, but it matters if i use them. I cannot be blamed for my shortcomings and failings, but it matters if i correct them. Therefore, no-one can be blamed for harming you, because they had no choice. Once you truly grasp this concept, the notions of holding a grudge, hatred, retribution and revenge become completely meaningless. But compassion for others no matter what they do to you becomes much more meaningful.

    Kindness
    by Naomi Shihab Nye
Before you know what kindness really is
    you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
    between the regions of kindness.
    How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
    how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and
    purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
it is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you every where
like a shadow or a friend.

If you don't have anyone you would call an enemy - that's great! If you practice metta meditation then when you imagine your enemy, the key is to think of people that arouse any aversion in your mind, e.g. thinking of politicians you don't like or murderers. It then becomes a task of practicing metta (and some compassion) towards them.

I understand Metta more to mean universal benevolence and good will. If others are happy they will not have ill will to you. It's kamma. Pema is love in Pali. The Buddha didn't say much good regarding Pema. It is a source of much suffering. As far as "self interest" gaining Nibbana is in ones "self " interest. The Buddha never said "there is no self" Think of Samsara as a jail cell and envision a crawl space out to a peaceful open field. (Nibbana) Using the 7 wings one yokes mental qualities to fit one's "self" through the crawl space. Nice video but
