How to Change Your Thinking and Your Life: The Four Great Efforts

  • If the Buddha were here today he would probably say, "If you want to change your life, then start by changing your thinking." In the Noble Eightfold Path, the Buddha taught that the way to happiness is to practice Right Effort, meaning that we should relinquish negative and harmful thoughts and instead cultivate positive and beneficial ones.
Peace and happiness can really be one thought away provided we know which thoughts we need to let go of and which ones we should cultivate and encourage. In this video, I explain the Four Great Efforts and give you practical tips on how to practice each one.

What is it that makes Mindah-Lee Kumar's videos so captivating? The answer is blindingly simple. She presents Buddhist concepts with no gloss, just straightforward talk and common sense and with the use of analogy that Lord Siddhartha was so fond of himself. What a great teacher she is.

Thank you Mindah. The antidote to habitual anger and aversion is lovingkindness or metta meditation which then matures to compassion or karuna...I've seen some people skip the first step or confuse the two. Abandoning unwholesome (wrong) view, intention, speech, & action is right effort.

Wonderful. Unless we change or redirect what is going on in our heads we won't change or improve the world. We might continue to have negative behaviour which promotes suffering and disatisfaction in life.

Haven’t watched many of your videos but from this you seem to have a very clear way of communicating on this topic. You make it much more accessible and easy to apply than a lot of other ‘teachers’ and even some monks/nuns who will talk twice as long and say half as much!

I've been having lots of negative thoughts , which has arisen due to anger and expectations. I've cried silently because I felt helpless and don't know what to do or how to react. The past few days have been really really difficult for me. It is an effort to smile. This is the second time I've watched this video and its uplifted my heavy heart and I feel so much betta. Thanks :)
