- Pacific Truck & Trailer Limited is a heavy truck manufacturer based in Vancouver, Canada, renowned for their durability. Pacific builds off-road and off-road trucks, primarily for the lumber, heavy haulage, and fire truck industries.
This 1970s Pacific P16 Off Road Truck is a frame restoration with many modifications. This truck is one of two Pacific trucks built specifically for a logging company on Vancouver Island capable of carrying 150 tonnes.
Equipped with Caterpillar C15 Diesel Engine with 550 HP. here it comes Heavy Truck Pacifc P16 150 Ton Truck ultimate power hauling machine, For heavy duty construction to mining applications this is a rare beast.

Working for A Dealship , I worked rebuilding 5 of the KW s planetary drive. Behind the cab were big water tanks with rubber hoses running over the brake drums to cool them off. These videos show the steam comming off the brake drums.
I worked up by Sprit Lake before St Hellens blew up and remember the 12 foot wide KWs with water cooled brakes. 1973 about.
Is that what all the steam was from?

I am a retired log truck dispatcher. I worked for a logging contractor on Vancouver Island's west coast. The off highway trucks, Pacific. Hayes, etc, empty truck and trailer weighs about 75 tons and we found that the ideal load of logs weighed about 100 tons. More than that and the truck could handle it but would go thru brakes and springs and be too slow going up any adverse, so 100 tons worked best and would be 2.5 to 3 times the load a highway log truck could haul.
So a combined 175 tons is what the trucks were still comfy with. 175. Seriously? That's literally 100 honda civics. Absolutely mental.

Notice the WFP on the door of the one truck. I worked for Crown Z when they were still around in Kokish. Moved up to Smith inlet with Weldwood later on.

Its the tiny chains securing the logs for me.
The hitch pretty much only steers the trailer. The logs themselves are the trailer
My grandfather spoke of six log loads with these big offroad trucks. Miss that man....
Wouldn’t surprise me a bit. I hauled a one tree load once. I live where the big ones are all gone now. Some of that equipment isn’t tied down. We lost a big cat hauling that way once. Would love to haul for a day in one of those trucks. Would love to pull a big cow train in Australia too.

Living out here in British Columbia, there are/were a fair amount of these big Pacific beasts running up and down the logging roads. They are truly huge, even compared to a highway tractor.
Nice trucks. I always had a soft spot for a Hayes HDX with 14 foot bunks filled up way over the cab
I had one pull up behind me at a stop sign once . I was driving a Ford one ton 4x4 with factory box , could see daylight between my tailgate and the bottom of his front bumper . I think I recall him having 14.00 x 26 tires . This was a patch pounder , not log truck

it clearly shows that the desingers of this monstruosity put all their effort in performance over the way it looks. But this thing still looks the most badass piece of machinery ever made

Living in New Jersey I've only seen one Pacific truck it was a giant tow truck.. I don't know how it could have fit down some of our roads.. Wish I had a photo of it..

Love these trucks. My dad use to get calendars with paintings of them operating in the big timber forests. I had a toy one from the late fifties ‘50’s that had steering front wheels and rubber tires. Learned how to back up a trailer with that toy!
My grandfather worked on the Martin mars bombers and I have snap on tools from that he showed me trucks like this and lots of stories was very cool
I remember seeing these giant loads of logs coming down the mountain in Campbell River when we were kids. Just crossed the hiway but never drove on the hiway itself......Unbelievable loads.
Good boys ! Loaded vehicles, ALWAYS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY, in off-highway situations. i drove roads like this, in winter in northern Saskatchewan, hauling sulfuric acid to uranium mines, Wollaston Lake area. TIME, DOESN'T MATTER; one must be ' goal ' oriented, and operate, according to conditions. The only load, which is '' late '' is one which DOES NOT GET THERE.......we all just wish, 4 wheelers' drivers/operators could UNDERSTAND THIS.
Loads of stories of people driven off the road by these, even a few deaths.
At the end of the day the roads are owned by the logging companies - if you're going up logging roads for w/e reason do it on off hours.

Brings back memories of growing up in Mill City Oregon back in the 70s... dad was a logger, he would take us up to various logging sites up in the mountains... I miss those days.

As cool as a p16 is, if you want the largest conventional looking truck what you're looking for is the Kenworth super 963, up to half a million pounds rolling on 70 inch tires.

Thats steam from cooling the brakes. The one guy was showing off as he was way over weight. Cool trucks l remember fleets of these. I grew up in logging.
I remember seeing an old restored log truck outside of a restaurant in Olympia, WA. Some old logger drove the damn thing there to eat dinner. It was an absolutely massive triple axle truck. Years later I have my CDL and we don't see rigs like this in my area (obviously). My new bosses have probably run these in years past though and I think they are really interesting.
I'm sure if you go a bit further northwest you'll see more of them. They might have some of these at Forks.

I drove two of these. One was a 5 and 4 trans. The other was 18 speed. Tough reliable truck.
Used to see these up in the NW corner of Alberta/NE Corner of B.C. when there were rig moves into that area to re-start gas drilling, around 1978-80. Lots of Bed/Winch trucks being used for the rigs; there were areas where there as logging going to extend roads or clear lease areas, Pacific and Hayes both. I caught a lift with one logger after a breakdown. The fellow had a classic B.C. Coast logger setup, water tank, "V" shaped headache rack, etc. It did have one unusual thing - a 13 speed backed by a 4 speed,. 5 and 4 was common on the oilfield bed trucks. Used to see lots of Hayes and Pacific trucks when visiting family on the Island, or up the mainland coast. Real monster rigs, and at that time they were working them hard. Not so many now.
The P16 stock had Detroit V12 power and a Allison 6 speed auto, the P12 had the 5/4 or 18's,
Changed many a Detroit, or Allison, first job was on a grease pit at CanFor, changing oil, grasping, then on to brakes, we tugged our guts out on a greased hunk of steel to pulled the duals, it's strained out milk let me tell you, big stuff.
There were Hayes HDX, Kenworth, Pacific and Mack, all with the V12, Alison combos, still operating, most of the Macks went to South America. Husby still runs a few.,

@@alsteeves2044 No at Bentley's first operation Chehalis near Harrison Hills, after apprenticing I worked up Harrison Lake, then Rivers Inlet, Queen Charlotte Islands, chases the big pay checks, also packed around 090 Stihl falling.
Good memories, now my back talks to me about those things.

I had a three log load. One log we couldn't pick up so the d8 pushed it into the truck with bunk stakes laying on the ground. Two little trees on top was a load

Well the biggest bunk I could find for a highway truck is 10’6” the off highway trucks had 14’ and 16’ bunks.
The swan neck is so high on the low loader I wonder if it was meant for a motorscraper tractor? (The big old ones with a steer axel)

Rolling in this beast in the forest, day or night, you fear nothing. No animal, human, alien or any entity can stop you. They just gets run over or torn to pieces by the engine.
Wonder what did they used to film these in the 70s? Either small hand cam or big ass news crew cam. Anyway, all were wonderfully recorded.
