First of all, thank you so much for your thoughtful comments! We love that there are such mixed opinions on this topic. To disgruntled teenagers and children, perhaps we can ask you to consider the following? You may or may not realize how different the world is today from what it was when we, your parents, were teens. Unattended, children today can access material with literally two clicks on a screen, that was completely out of reach (on the top shelf of a dodgy corner shop or otherwise out of reach) back in our day. I personally didn't get my first mobile phone until I was well into my teens, and the "worst thing" I could do with it was play Snake during class (check it out, it's great). We agree that control without context and an open discussion is doomed to fail. That's why we try to do both, which, to be fair, perhaps isn't conveyed well enough in the video. In the end, we do trust our son (and he knows it). We do not, however, trust multi-billion dollar industries and corporations with the knowledge and capabilities to put material in front of unsuspecting children that will hook, trick, or harm them without them even realizing it. Please keep sharing your thoughts. However, consider that if your parents are using a device-monitoring app such as Google Family Link, you might find that they're less concerned about control and more... well... just concerned. About you. About your safety. And about your physical and mental well-being. We hope this clears up a little more about why we use this type of monitoring app and hope you can have a good, honest discussion with your parents about the topic. Thanks for watching.
Honest discussion? I would rather have NO phone than have family link. That app is HELL not even the devil would make something that evil. I understand that you want to protect your children from dangerous content on the internet, but I don't think this app is the solution. I agree that children should be children and not spend so much time on screens, but this app can make them lose trust in you. What might happen when they are able to remove the app as adults, they can become more rebellious. When they feel the freedom they'll be afraid that they'll lose it, and do worse things online. I feel before I had family link, I used less screen time. After I got family link, I felt pressured to use all of my screen time before it's my bedtime, or I will feel like I wasted it. Maybe you could use a different app, which just shows location and how much screen time they used. And you could just tell them to get off their phones instead of locking their phones on your screen. This can also make your children feel like you have control over them, but you're not controlling them. Instead your guiding them. I know this comment probably won't change your minds, but I just wanted to share my opinion.

We intend to (and already have) gradually extended the boundaries of the apps and features our son can use on his phone and there has been no complaint from his side about our approach or the app itself. I feel like most of the problems people have with this app have more to do with poor communication between parents and kids about its use than anything else... and that can go both ways. 😊

Haha you know what's funny is when I was growing up people didn't get phones until they were at least in their teens. Which honestly wasn't that long ago. But I can see how it would be very important if your kiddos go to school👍🏻. That is a neat app👍🏻
Ashley, I totally replied to your comment right away, but for some reason it didn't show up... I didn't get my first phone until I was 15 and I turned out just fine (if I do say so myself). We were very hesitant, for a number ofnreasons. But I do get that the world is different now from when I grew up (just a few years ago). And since he walks home from school himself most days and we don't have a home phone I do see it making sense. So far so good. :) But the app really does give me peace of mind. :)
@@RealOrganized haha that's fine👍🏻😊. Haha I think I was about that age when I got my first real phone for a long period of time👍🏻. Although it was a flip phone and we didn't really have texting it was still fun😂👍🏼.

It looks like you have some stored up frustrations you're struggling to come to terms with. Try to sit down with your parents and put into words how you're really feeling. It might be uncomfortable, especially at first, but it'll be a worthwhile exercise. We're rooting for you!
App works pretty well, I wish it was "intrusive" in which I could remotely monitor texts. Thankfully I have a "good" enough child this isn't much of a concern. I wish my kids could have my childhood of: going outside, riding my bike to go see my friends, going outside, watching the family show on Thursday nights, and waking up early Saturday to watch cartoons, then.... GOING OUTSIDE!
This app is so good... I've done this to my son, he said that you give me phone but you know what im doing, will I said don't spend time with gadget's spend time with us your mom and dad, we will allow you to use it anyway did we? Ahahaha we have time to spend with the kids without the smart phones... Thank you and for the app...
Thank you for your comment. It's not easy introducing your kids to the world of personal mobile devices. We found Google Family Link to be a great way to start them out.
Do you not know what "Privacy" is? This app is basically being in jail but virtually, this is basically a tutorial on "how to make your child hate you". Only way to get away with this is if your parents don't really know how to use it, my mom is the only one that uses it and only knows how to set time limits and install apps, I'm scared since if she finds out how to do other things on it I'm dead. This just makes my anxiety worse than it already is. Also... Can't you just take away their device instead of locking it? Like whats the use of it? Who cares what they search up we've all been through phases that happen to anyone so it doesn't matter.
I may be alone in my opinion, but I'm not a fan of a phone until my kids are 12/13. They should be outside playing, doing sports, etc as much as possible. Screen time seems quite bad for their social, physical, and emotional development. My kids don't have phones and seem totally fine with that.
First of all, thank you so much for your thoughtful comments! We love that there are such mixed opinions on this topic.

A parent really only will go to the trouble of setting this up in order to help their children. It’s all out of love.
Thank you so much! This is exactly why we use it.
Hope it helps for you and your kids!
I did get one when I was younger (not a teen) for a few days but that was because they had an extra phone that they didn't turn off and it was breaking, so I got to have fun with thqt for a while. Although it was a flip phone and we didn't really have texting it was still fun😂👍🏼.
This is the 21 centuary , so GROW UP , BE REALISTIC
no this app is hell (i havent ever had it and my parents agree)
This app don’t have a life
You guys are really great at providing helpful information for families! Thank you and happy holidays!
Thank you so much Renata. We really appreciate it. Happy holidays to you as well!
Don't get it for your child. It can damage your relationship. :/
My parent ruined my life with this app
Heh finally Im not using family link anymore guys hear this
If you 13+ you will not use family link anymore you guys can delete it ;D but... Kinda suck btw ;(
Do your kids have smart devices? How do you manage their screen-time?
It looks like you have some stored up frustrations you're struggling to come to terms with. Try to sit down with your parents and put into words how you're really feeling. It might be uncomfortable, especially at first, but it'll be a worthwhile exercise. We're rooting for you!
This is evil nooooo
Familylink is bad app
Why you ruined my life
made life horrible thanks a lot

App works pretty well, I wish it was "intrusive" in which I could remotely monitor texts. Thankfully I have a "good" enough child this isn't much of a concern. I wish my kids could have my childhood of: going outside, riding my bike to go see my friends, going outside, watching the family show on Thursday nights, and waking up early Saturday to watch cartoons, then.... GOING OUTSIDE!
Why would you want to read their texts
