    What do you think? Is the rollback a bad idea?

    Also, if you’re a professional aerospace engineer or physicist, would love to chat more about the impacts of this from a mathematical perspective, so please comment :)

    This is a bit ironic, there are complaints from many RUclips instructors that golf is already loosing participants at a relatively quick pace due to the shear difficulty of the sport and the expense associated with.
    So, are “they” expecting that making it harder to play is going to somehow increase devotees to the game? lol.. good luck

    The USGA is robot testing with on center hits with the only variable being swing speed.The slow swinger who hits off center with a slice will lose way more.A fade will spin more into a big weak slice

    • @thediygolfer
      @thediygolfer  9 месяцев назад

      Why would the spin rate increase as a result of this? Off center contact would decrease distance regardless of the ball, so are you saying the proportion lost will be greater now?

    • @mikegriffin4425
      @mikegriffin4425 9 месяцев назад

      I saw a video of a PGA pro saying he will now be able to work an 8 iron because of increased spin, so I assume a weak fade will turn into a slice off the driver

      I think this will depend on how the manufacturers choose to alter the golf balls to conform. They have a couple options:
      1. They could make the ball "softer" (lower compression) - all else equal, this is going to decrease spin rates since lower compression balls generally spin less
      2. They could alter the dimple pattern, size of the golf ball, or decrease the mass of the golf ball-all else equal, these would simply cause more drag and "lift", which are ball flight characteristics, not necessarily spin characteristics.
      The highest spinning balls are the high compression ones (like the ProV1x) due to the soft urethane cover (that "grabs" the grooves) sitting on top of a firm core. The softer we make that core, the less it will spin.

    Bad idea for the amateur golfer. A pro that drives the ball 320 yards can afford to lose 10-15 yards. Me, at 66 yrs driving 220 yards, 10-15 yards will really hurt my game. I already play from the senior tees, I would have to move up to the ladies tees to make up the difference in lost yardage. Why not just make specific PGA approved balls for the pros (they can even have them stamped with a trade mark emblem on each ball) and leave the amateur alone. The pros do not pay for their balls, they are provided by the manufacturer for promoting their ball. Amateurs pay for their balls, we should be able to buy and use any ball we want. If the amateur plays in a USGA sanctioned tournament, then an approved "PGA" ball would have to be used.

    • @Iamwrongbut

      Well from a percentage point, you aren’t going to lose 10-15 yds. You might lose 5-7

    Amateur golfers with high handicaps shouldn't be using pro v's anyway. you're wasting your money wacking those into the woods and water. There are tiny inconsistencies in your non pro swing that are leading to more yardage variation, that probably have more of an effect than the ball you're using. Also, going to your local course, no one is going to know what balls you and your buddies are using. Buy a bunch of the balls you like now and hold on to them. There aren't going to be golf police out on the course checking your balls. Club manufacturers are probably going to continue discovering new technologies to put in their clubs that will add another 10 yards to strikes anyway. If you are going to compete in a tournament that makes you use a conforming ball, you're all on an equal playing field. Want better scores, get better at golf.

      I know, its really simple. Play the game you want to play, no one is going to stop you if it's just for fun. How many of these people who are so upset probably break a half dozen USGA rules per round anyways while just having fun. Juiced balls will still be sold, just buy those and have fun.

    As a high 80’s golfer who’s trying to break into the 70’s, I need all the help I can get! I think it’s pretty ignorant to stop the advancement of the sport, should we all just play the same brand of clubs as well? Golf is hard enough, it should be fine for the usga and pro tournaments, but leave us hackers out of it,

      Golf is the only major sport without a standardized ball. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey (puck), tennis, etc... Everybody uses the same equipment in every other sport. I'm all for everybody playing the same ball. Rollback or not really doesn't matter if they're all the same it levels the playing field.

    • @tracethompson6152
      @tracethompson6152 8 месяцев назад

      @@Will_Hall I hate to be that guy but, the balls are different at the level of the game. For instance the pro football and basketball are much larger than college, in turn the college balls are bigger than high school balls, as far as football the white stripes are on college and high schools but not the nfl, in basketball the hight of the rims are taller for every level, but I get your point, but making the ball fly 3-5 yards shorter doesn’t change that if the bunker is 270 and they drive the ball over 300 they’re still going to over power the design of the course, seems like it’s going to punish players that were going to lay up anyway, but instead of laying up with a hybrid or long iron which is much more easier to hit they have to hit the driver, which is a harder club to control for amateurs like me. I just think it’s dumb what’s the point if it’s only shaving off a couple of yards! If it was like 10 to 15 yards, I could maybe see that, but like 3-5 yards they’re still going to launch it over bunkers and cut the corners of dog legs, seems like seniors and women are going to have to learn a new strategy off the tee,

    I expect that not only will we see driving distance fall, every club in the bag will hit shorter. All due respect to my fellow average golfers, knowing that the balls won’t go as far, the reaction will be to swing harder than ever, with predictable bad results. I’ll be 80 years old when the rules affect amateurs. Between now and then I’ll be stock piling golf balls. By the way, there’s a nice non-conforming ball right now called the MG Senior. I’m using with good results. Have to make good contact to really see a difference but that’s OK because it puts a premium on swinging well, not hard.

    • @thediygolfer
      @thediygolfer  9 месяцев назад

      It will depend on what factors they change in the ball. If they change the aerodynamics (dimples, size, mass), all clubs could be affected. While if they change the core of the ball, which affects initial ball speed, that relationship is going to be non linear and the shorter irons won’t be affected much or at all.
      That’s at least my understanding, would love to speak to a trained aerospace engineer to isolate all these factors and get a clear answer though.

      Drivers for lower swingspeeds won't be impacted once the ball MFG get though the testing. They will use materials properties to enable almost nothign to be impacted except 120+ swingspeeds.

  • @TMar1961
    @TMar1961 9 месяцев назад

    That first graph is a bit misleading. The elite female golfer swings about 94mph which is on par with 9-20 handicap MALE golfers, that will effect millions of players considering the USGA says the average handicap worldwide is 16. That's driver alone and will add 1 club to your approach meaning you hit a longer shafted, less accurate club.

    Golf ball rollback does fook all, the only way is standardized lofts for irons and drivers, try hitting a 350 yard drive with a 12 degree driver or an 8 iron 200 yards with 48 degree of loft 😂

      @thediygolfer  8 месяцев назад

      While i think standardizing lofts would cause even more of an uproar from amateurs and pros than this rollback, I must admit, I’m tired of seeing 42 degree “pitching wedges” in bags. Not the golfer’s fault at all-mostly a marketing tactic. But still, it’s crazy 🤣

    All the STUPID USGA and R&A had to do was water the fairways at PGA tournaments. right now they quit watering at least a week before a tournament so the pros get 40,50+ ads of roll that the ams playing the courses don't get at Kaplua they get 90+n yards of roll on one hole and many hit is 400+ yards, I was there hit it on the same downhill hole and got 40 yards of roll not 100,. All they have to do is water the tour courses like there was no tournament there and the pros now hit is 20-30 yards shorter, sure they may fly it 280-300 but then it stops just like it does for the ams. this rollback is bullshit. Im still going to be a scratch golfer since I play a Chrome Soft but I won't be able to step up to a Chrome Soft X if I can get in better shape to hit the ball farther. Hard work won't payoff like it does today, frankly why should someone like Rory or Bryson be penalized just because they aren't a fat belly who won't work out,, won't put in the effort.
