Me too, but I am looking for a bike & this type video sure lets ya know the stuff to look for in one of these bikes. I really wonder about "Inspection" after you pull all the emissions stuff off her? I'm not in Kalifornia but it would be my luck to trash all this sH!T just to be rejected by the State? I ask this often but no one answers so IDKnow? peace man
Thank you. Just deleted the pump on my 2007. It does feel better. Note: Just for esthetics I put two 10mm bolts to cover up the old mounting holes on the cylinder.
Just bought a used 1993 one from a friend with 5000 miles on it. : ). The kit came the other day. Once it is warmer outside, I am going to do this mod. Thanks for posting this video!!!
Thank you for making this video. I just did a Carb replacement on a 2014 that was previously desmoged. However, the revised CA Carb 16100-MGW-L11 (which superceeds 16100-MGW-A01) had the T on the top and the top and bottom nipples that you blocked off. My A01 did not have these features which made me unsure how to reconnect everything. You and Autozone (for my fuel caps) made my day.
Great video! I just bought a 2020 XR650L. I just put some Pro Taper handlebars with 2 inch risers. Now I’m ready to rip all that smog crap off. Next week I’ll redo the exhaust system. Can’t wait to get her set up like I want it. Thanks again for the video. Very good.
I have a 2007, I did this & added a Pro Circuit Type 496 exhaust system. I consider the "de-corking" a must. It lowers weight (which the bike needs) and improves performance.
I also removed my oil canister and routed the hose to the top of the air box. 1500 miles since and no problems. If you haven't done so, try Dave's Mods with a foam filter and snorkel removal. HUGE difference in throttle response and power.
I did this to my 2012, another good mod is desnorkle the air box under the seat. Easy to drill out 2 rivets and remove snorkle then go up one size on the primary and main jets. Still have stock pipe.
I have a Falcon 400 and the valve us similar. I made block off plates and plugged the vacuum line. Didn't notice any difference in running but I rliminated some useless crap.
I don't own an XR650L yet but might get one and this mod looks like a great one. Good job filming and explaining the steps. My only input is to not include any background music.
is this by chance a CA bike? I just put a kit i got off ebay on my 07 and you have a few more spots on the carb that need to be blocked off. I have 3 extra small caps, was just watching to see if i somehow missed one.
When removing the smog kit I got with a number of plugs. Of which 3 small plastic plugs for which I did not get a description. A friend told me by eliminating the smog mechanism what cause overheating to the engine please let me know if this is true or otherwise I will eliminate it
The smog mechanism recirculates exhaust gases which may have unburnt fuel and the rest is inert already consumed what happens is that inert volume and unburnt fuel make the mixture richer because less oxygen to burn. So you could have overheating if you eliminate it and go too lean. Adjusting the carb richer would solve that. Many forums can give you advice.
@@dnnich ^^ This is completely wrong. The ASV (air suction valve) does NOT recirculate exhaust gases. It is simply a vacuum operated valve that allows fresh filtered air from the air box to enter the exhaust ports DOWNSTREAM from the exhaust valves to more completely burn unburned gases in the exhaust system. It in no way affects anything that happens inside the engine. People seem to confuse this device with the old EGR valves on cars which injected exhaust into the intake tract. Again, the ASV has no effect on anything happening inside the combustion chamber, only inside the exhaust system. Also, the ASV was used on all US XRs, not only California models.
I don’t even own a xr650 and this is the second time I’ve watched this video in about 4 years. Good stuff

WOW! You have a 10 mm socket that you can find?!?!
aint that the truth. got at least 8 hiding from me
A true miracle

Awesome !!! I would like to see more XR650L specific videos.

Is the smog pump just on California bikes only ?
This bike is pretty light for what it is… I’m fairly certain the KLR is 60+ lbs heavier. And the DR650S is about fifteen pounds heavier.

Bill Smith does "dave's mods " have a you page? Thanks

Dump that turd of a stock pipe
Awesome video! Thanks for doing this! I followed your process and achieved success in about 1 hour!
Thank you for explaining all that. I have the 2010 model, I don’t have an air vent on my gas cap, but I think I got all that other junk
Great video 👊 Just pulled all that garbage off my XR . Thank you!
great work !!!! i ordered ours today picking up our 21 on friday and cant wait #livetoride
Nicely done video ~ great video footage of what it looks like & what to expect. Now I know how. peace

Dang! The kit came with new foot pegs
Does taking the smog parts off void the warranty?
I saving to buy a xrl, inspired now!
Had trouble understanding your speech , volume and patterns , but that's on my end I suppose. Nice info though, thanks for passing that on.
Very nicely done video! Thanks
Question I just bought the 2024 xr650l yesterday what does deleting the smog stuff do to it
Looks soooo much cleaner
What benefits does removing it bring?
Does it add any benefit you can feel

Thx brother, great tutorial 👍
First thing I did to my 2017. What a bunch of useless junk and excess weight.
Try owning a Cummins lol

Funny how when it is done it looks just like my XL600R. :P
Well they are basically the same motor
It should allow better cooling to the driver side of the engine.

It must be a CA model or something. He had more stuff to remove and block off on his than I had on my 2018.

Dominator 1994
Charcoal canister?
Awesome video. Please consider never using that background music ever again. 😂
Rolling on over 20,000, just did this and is doesnt backfire like shit now.
Do you have regular gouvernement emission test in the USA, like the MOT in the UK?
Not yet!!
Used to in Arizona but got rid of it years ago.
With democrats in power now, won't be long
I haven't had an inspection sticker on a bike for over 10 years.
The police have enuf to worry about, they don't have time to be worrying about emissions stickers..
I heard somewhere that this has no effect on performance and actually cleans up emission, I dunno though
I heard the same. Basically, it was explained to me that it just removes weight.
Just removed mine. 2019 xr650l I felt more throttle response and down shifting is smoother with less pops. Bike looks cleaner. Had fun doing the mods.
Would doing smog delete after purchase of a new xr650l adversely affect the factory/manufacturer warranty
@@GMan38cal well its fine the way it is, I just love this motorcycle, I don't really need to go all crazy with it
Great video

Bill Spurlock thanks for the correction I was just making an assumption based on the routing of the hoses and older exhaust gas recirculating systems
Great video!
Is that CA only or nationwide with all that crap?
What is the use of that smog?
To reduce emissions and allow it to be street legal.
Holy moley, you really have to give us the tools used? You forgot to mention the gloves, lighting level and soap used after.....
That is what makes the difference between you and the excellent people.
What is the purpose of the Smog?
I didn't see any of the diaphragm parts on my 2021 so I only needed 1 of the small rubber caps, can anybody else verify that I did it correctly?
I've got a stupid question.. Can you do this in California too and get away with it???
Well if the bike gets test for emissions then probably not
You can knowingly give people AIDS in California and get away with it, but I doubt you could do this. (I'm not even joking about that either)
You can shit on the sidewalk there but better have your emissions sticker handy..
Keep the canister and make it into a reservoir tank or tool box
Nice video, but you hot micd the paper 😮
Does the smog delete require a carburetor adjustment?
No, but they are lean from the factory already.
I need to do this on my KTM 690
Is there an improvement in fuel economy?
Wow, can't believe all this smog crap.
Why doesn't the DR650 have smog crap ?
Do you have to re-jet the carb if you do the smog delete?
Get rid of that oil separater
These emission control device makes the Bike to be legal in states like California
Good video... But could have been a great video without the music
Forgot how crappy all that stuff looks. Lol
So much junk removed
L😊)
Off install... I think the word is uninstall chief.
Awesome video! Thanks!
