    one additional comment on the 5th screw underneath the EGR. It's an Allen 5mm and I had to cut the shorter side down to 1 cm with an angle grinder

    As an addition,out of the 4 egr screws,there is a fifth one(an allen screw) under the egr.This thing tooked me 20 minutes to figure out...

    Thanks a lot for this tut! I couldn't even get my car from the parking lot without the engine stalling today.
    I got off the EGR quite easily with my trusty little toolkit and some patience. Cleaned the EGR with a fair amount of degreaser, some abrasive and and old electric toothbrush.
    The "hard bolt" took some fiddling indeed, but with two extensions and joint just before the sprocket it came off quite easily.
    The "5th" bolt was not present on my car ( '06 V50 2.0D) Thanks Volvo ;-)

      Paul Tuinman what was the result? My girlfriend's car 2005 v50 2.0 diesel is going into limp home mode after a few minutes of driving. Fault codes indicate that the egr isn't working, and that the turbo is overcharging. Not sure if cleaning the egr will be enough, or if I will have to disassemble the whole turbo as well.

      Hi, well in the end the EGR worked for a while but then it broke completely. The build-up of dirt in the EGR caused a lot of strain on the valve and little motor in the EGR valve causing it to break down eventually.
      I ended up disabling the EGR all together by unplugging it, cutting a aluminum sealing and placing it between the EGR valve and the aluminun pipe that that runs from the intake to the EGR valve.
      Viola, a disabled EGR valve and a smooth-running engine. I'm going to replace it next year though as disabling an EGR in Holland is illegal ;-)

    • @Tomazack
      @Tomazack 8 лет назад +1

      Paul Tuinman egr valves are shit. Probably good for the environment, but not good for the economy and the engine. How did the car run with the aluminium seal? Was it just a round piece that fitted between the pipe and the valve? Could be interesting to do something similar.

    • @threesixty4486
      @threesixty4486 8 лет назад +1

      There's a gasket between the EGR and the aluminum pipe. Just lay down the original gasket on a thin plate of aluminum and cut it to size. Drill two clean holes for the bolts. Now slide in your new gasket and put the bolts back in to place.
      Don't forget to unplug the EGR, add some protection like a little plastic bag on the connector and ty-wrap it to an existing cable.
      Mine even got trough the MOT without EGR but keep in mind replacing may be neccesary if yours dont.
      Also be sure to disconnect the battery. It resets the adaption values. Ideal would be if you let them delete all fault codes at a workshop.
      Result: A clean running engine and a better throttle respons. In terms of powere there's no real difference.

      @spancer87 - this seal is nothing fancy. Is EGR good for engine? Well there are some benefits with having EGR working (beside the enviroment): In 2,0D engine the exhaust gases are heating up the coolant (thanks to small heat exchanger) so the engine reaches proper temperature a bit faster. In addition it will extend DPF life because less of particaltes comes to exhaust. Disabling EGR will not give you any ECM faults.

    Best thing to do to get the Allen's key bolt off is use a M5 allen bit with 1/4 spanner and crack it loose... Only needs to be turned a few times to release egr

    The garage stripped mine and cleaned it and the car worked perfectly for one full day but is now back to kangarooing. This would suggest to me the EGR valve is faulty and the ODB reader suggest this is the case. Should I now move to replacing the valve with a new OEM or second hand working one or is it worth trying to clean again? Second hand ones are quite cheap on Ebay anyway

    • @SadowskiMarek
      @SadowskiMarek  9 лет назад

      Adrian Jowitt If you cleaned the EGR there is no sense to clean it again. It is rather not possible that the dirt blocked it after a one day. What DCM error code is read by OBD? I had a problem with communication between EGR and central module (read by VOLVO VIDA). It turned out that the cable had a break. With second-hand valve it is risk because even nice looking part could have damaged electronic.

    • @adrianjowitt
      @adrianjowitt 9 лет назад

      Hi there. Codes are p2263, p0002, and p0490. Bearing in mind it worked fine for 36 hours seems to me the egr valve is maybe end of life and cleaning it just helped for a while??

    • @SadowskiMarek
      @SadowskiMarek  9 лет назад

      Adrian Jowitt If the EGR id dead, engine is "kangarooing" only in stable ride between 1600-1800rpm. It jerks also while starting and stopping the engine. But if it is going while accelerating you should take a look at turbo code p2263. If there was a short in cables from EGR some cables moving could help for a moment. This is my opinion, but I am not a proffesional.

    • @adrianjowitt
      @adrianjowitt 9 лет назад

      Hi mate what you described is exactly what is happening between 1600-1800 and is OK in higher acceleration. It's had a new turbo. Everything pointing to faulty egr valve. You have been very helpful mate. Thankyou

    I just came here to say F that bottom screw. It's such an obvious attempt to force DIYers to the garage. Car manufacturers have taken all the enjoyment out of working on a car just to tighten their mafioso business model. After I finally got the mfer out, I replaced the allen screw with a hex head for future ease of removal.

I'm hoping I can still get it off because if I can't iv got no clue how Im getting the bolt out that snapped

      Torx T30, btw great tutorial. I replace EGR by myslef in my V50 2.0D 2005r and works great. Take 3 hours with replace a thorttle. Had big hands and this is hard to unscrew bottom screw but is possible. Thanks again.
      Jak ktoś ma tak duże łapy jak ja to trzeba przed próba odkręcenia dwóch śrub mocujących EGR z chłodnicą EGR, odłączyć rurę która doprowadza płyn z obiegu do chłodnicy EGR. To jest to kolanko od góry przy EGR z lewej strony. Inaczej nie wsadzicie tam ręki i śrubki wam na dół poleca lub w ogóle nie odkręcicie tej dolnej. Ja dodatkowo wymieniałem tez przepustnice (ja mam V50 z 2005r więc mam jedno gardzielową) przykręcona na śrubki Torx T30. Przy wymianie EGR na nowy dobrze jest ją sprawdzić czy ma nie wytarte ząbki tłoczka. Jak wam szarpie autem przy gaszeniu to znaczy że przepustnica się nie zamyka. Po wymianie EGR na nowy i przepustnicy nie to auto. Mniej pali (1-2L) nic nie trzęsie jak gaśnie i zbiera się elegancko.

    • @ChrisUK_22
      @ChrisUK_22 4 года назад

      @@SadowskiMarek I think I would have to remove the egr cooler just to get to that bottom screw joining the egr valve and the cooler. I don't have enough room to get to that effing screw as the engine is so close to the body. I was able to do the other screws except this one. Such a crappy design. Anyhow, is it possible to just drain half of the coolant as I am so skeptical about getting air inside the engine and piss the heck out of me just to bleed it.

    • @ghassanalfarra8935
      @ghassanalfarra8935 4 года назад +3

      @@ChrisUK_22 Removing:
      1. the air filter box ( 2minute job, don't forget to unplug the MAF sensor first) and you don't have to remove the air filter, just undo the 2 bands on the MAF sensor, release a rubber band at the front and then just lift upwards, the entire air filter assembly with it's resonator box will come out.
      2. the battery with it's casing (10-15 minutes, don't forget to unplug the battery temp sensor under the battery tray, so 3 bolts and a sensor after removing the battery)
      3. then raising the main air pipe (it's flexible enough)
      -----> will reveal the entire EGR valve, and all attachment points will become visible and easily accessible from the left side of the car. 👍
      and as bonus you'll get to see your ABS unit (good time to clean up and vacuum), the gearbox upper mout, the gear selector cables.

    • @SadowskiMarek

      It will. Simplest way to do it is to cut a metal cap and place it between the valve and metal pipe running to intake. And unplug the cables. It is possible to delete EGR from ECM software but that is a challange for specialists ;)

    • @mammutit
      @mammutit 9 лет назад

      William Kelly it is on the bottom of the egr valve itself. www.volvobreakers.co.uk/pimages/small_DSCF1465.JPG you see it is party loosened with the washer on the bottom of the picture

    • @mammutit
      @mammutit 9 лет назад

      mammutit It is VERY tight space under there, the bottom of the screw and the air intake hose are very close together , you need this : the smallest bits ratchet : ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31WlzyKKpVL._SY300_.jpg , there is enough room under there for you to hold the ratchet with two fingters comming from the right side, and two fingers allinging it with the screw from the left side, have patience

    • @SadowskiMarek
      @SadowskiMarek  9 лет назад

      mammutit This allen bolt you've show on the picture - you can see on my video @6:24 that there is no such bolt in my EGR valve. What is this for and is it holding something?

    • @mammutit
      @mammutit 9 лет назад

      maroo1981 it is just another fastener to the engine. if you dont have it someone took it off and did not put it back on. It is not strictly needed so the best practice is to not screw it back on if you have it because it is so difficult to remove. A second way to remove it is to raise the car and put 5-10 ratchet extentions from under the car to be able to open it up all the way from under the car
