This is one of those rare songs that was good when it first came out and I never got sick of. I’ve left this song on when it’s on the radio for over two decades now lol
Same
Ditto
Me too!
Yep!
Beautiful song from a gorgeous woman. Such a stunner
Another great 90's song with so much empathy is "Stay" by Lisa Loeb
Yep! Came here to suggest Stay and any and all Jewel
Brilliant song, great video, and the car kept its appearance because it added something to the whole thing.
Yeah, Stay should definetly be on the listening list.
Love, love, love Lisa Lobe!! ❤️ 90s kid here, still rock out when it comes on the radio!
Yessssss
Natalie Imbruglia. Besides her voice, one of the most beautiful women alive! I still have a crush on her to this day.
This song is just pure 90s nostalgia. When the world was a simpler place.
We're that age now, huh?
Wow - 'When the world was a simpler place' - and it was! *Titanic music swells* It really was!
This was a huge hit in the UK in the nineties. Natalie was an Australian soap opera actor. Much love from England 🏴
I think she also did some modeling in Australia.
It was a huge hit on the US as well …
this song was a worldwide hit not just a euro hit
She also acted in Johnny English that James Bond type parody movie starring Rowan Atkinson. He's only smooth in his dreams. It's hilarious 😂 and definitely worth checking out.
Yeah huge in ireland too. 😁
Both Natalie Imbruglia and Kylie Minogue started out as Australian Soap actresses.
By the way, you guys should definitely react to Kylie Minogue “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.”
You literally won’t be able to get it out of your heads. If there is a catchier song in existence, I don’t want to hear it.
Thanks for putting that in my head again 😭
Natalie Imbruglia was married to Daniel Johns, front man, guitarist, and main songwriter of the band Silverchair. They were married in 2003 and divorced in 2008
Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians "What I Am" needs to be in your list - I think Jay world love her vibe
Yes! I’ve been suggesting this for months!
They both would love it.
Absolutely!
Oh most definitely! Great choice!
Oh yes
This was Natalie's first, and by far her biggest, hit, in 1997. I would also recommend "Big Mistake", "Smoke", "Wrong Impression", and "Shiver". And I would HEAVILY recommend that you check out another Natalie, that being Natalie Merchant. "Kind & Generous" is such an uplifting song, and you'll also love "Carinval" and "Wonder". You'd also love her stuff from when she was the lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs, in songs like "These Are Days", "Trouble Me", and "Candy Everybody Wants".
they'll love Natalie Merchant's "Wonder", "Carnival" and "Jealousy"! The official video must be done for "Wonder".
i remember hearing smoke on dawsons creek and i still love that song all these years later
"That Day" is also one of Natalie Imbruglia's best, overlooked and underrated imo.
@@surlechapeau I forgot about "Jealousy". Good call!
Amen
Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn and Dido’s Thank You were released in 1997 and 1998 so it makes sense you can see a similarity in their styles. LOVE both these artists! ❤
Two other songs I absolutely love from 1997 are “Angels” by Robbie Williams and “Put Your Arms Around Me” by the Scottish band Texas. Definitely check them out!
Jamie, I couldn’t agree more with suggesting the band Texas!! Except The song I Strongly recommend people checking out is their first release and big hit “I Don’t want a Lover” it has great slide guitar, a driving beat from drums and really Nice vocals! It’s great to see someone else who knows this band! 😉👍😁🇨🇦
@@cherisparkes4447 They have so many great songs!
@@jamiedianne6778 I’ll go check out the one you’ve suggested (see if I can remember it) 🤷♀😉 and some others as well.. 👍
Was that dido song 98?
Damn, I feel old. 🤦♂️😂
@@TheRetroManRandySavage Me too 🙈 😂 Yeah, it was on the soundtrack for the film Sliding Doors before her first album came out in ‘99.
Lots of people associate the 90s with grunge, R&B, and hip-hop, which were all amazing. It was also a standout decade for women artists. Some in those genres, a ton in the pop world, but also spaces that seem to get forgotten. There were solo acts, singer-songwriters, female-fronted bands of every stripe. Trip-hop was a big thing and women dominated. Even huge trip hop artists helmed by men had female vocalist features for their top hits.
(Amber, look up Lilith Fair. Any artists from the tours will likely be up your alley.)
It boggles my mind that artists like Jewel, Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs and solo), The Indigo Girls, Lauryn Hill (Fugees and solo), Macy Gray, Everything But The Girl, Hole, Dido, Portishead, Sarah McLachlan, Erykah Badu, etc. just got memory-holed. Like, these artists were MASSIVE.
I could truly keep this list going and going into so many genres my head spins. Which reminds me that being a younger GenXer is a privilege. We grew up in an analog world where we got exposed to the music of our elders via records, 8 tracks, cassettes (mix tapes were an actual physical thing), radio and TV. We were the first (only?) to experience CDs (trust me, this was BIG), Now we stream like we were born to it. I feel lucky. My musical life has always included multitudes.
@lia boyd I was just coming in to say "empathy in the 90's" is shorthand for "women's excellence in music," and give a list of women who played the Lilith Fair. Your list is better than mine, but I also included the Cranberries. Great stuff, great video, great comment. ✌️
Wendy Matthews another 80s 90s Australian Singer with a great unique voice Beloved and The Day You Went Away two outstanding tracks.
@@liaboyd8464 THe Alt Rock era was heavy with some female leads. Garbage, Luscious Jackson, Republica, Elastica, Sonic Youth even. The list does go on.
"Monica from friends" Lol, At the time this song was released she was dating David Schwimmer who played Ross (Monica's brother)
I was living in Australia in the mid-late 90's and this definitely brings back memories. Savage Garden was another of that era that this brings to mind.
Yes, Savage Garden! Another great 90s album.
"I love you always forever," by Donna Lewis, "Torn," by Natalie Imbruglia, "Stay" by Lisa Loeb, and "I Don’t Want To Wait" by Paula Cole (Dawson’s Creek theme song) and anything by Sarah MacLachlan all have a mid-late ‘90s vibe.
Also "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone" by Paula Cole
I love that Donna Lewis track so much- one of my favourite 90's tunes:)
“Kiss the rain” by Billie Myers too
90’s, what a great decade of music
Ditto ! Natalie Merchant next! “These Are The Days” or “Candy, Give em What They Want”
You have to go back to 1992! Sophie B Hawkins...her song, "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" is so good. Even in the video, one can tell what a performer she was and still is!
Yesss! I would love for them to react to this song. Still on my playlist ❤
Tongues & Tails , & Whaler are both great albums of hers. ❤
I have to say, you can’t mention the 90’s without another Natalie, Natalie Merchant, lead vocalist for 10,000 Maniacs(late 80’s through mid 90’s and solo artist, very unique voice , and very unique and successful singer and songwriter. Songs like Carnival , These Are Days, Candy Everybody Wants, Wonder, Break Your Heart, Jealousy, What’s The Matter Here, Don’t Talk, Eat For Two, Trouble Me , and Like The Weather feature Natalie’s beautiful and unique vocals. I can’t believe you guys haven’t discovered her yet …
I have requested NATALIE MERCHANT several times, I'm sure they'll get around to her!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
@@teresajarrell452 I hope so!
This song is incredibly special to me, as it was my favourite song at the time I finally quit drinking (23 years sober now!). So even though its a bit sad, it's also (to me) a very freeing song. Still makes me smile whenever I hear it.
(And she's so cute!)
🎊🎉Congratulations ✌🏻
That's wonderful! Congratulations!
Many congratulations!, on 23 years of sobriety!
Peace and Joy, good health, Blessings and Grace to you and to all of your family and friends from Santa Fe, NM, USA.
Congratulations
23 years sober is awesome. I'm at 29 years off booze and it's gotten to the point where I don't have "the number" in my head - if it comes up I have to stop and do math. Congratulations and keep on keeping on.
This was a great wee tune back in the day and Natalie was gorgeous! And what’s scary is 30 years later and she has barely aged and is still stunning. ❤
Natalie Imbruglia definitely embodies some of the best of the 90s.
She has that folksy sound which turned me on back then! “Lying naked on the floor!” Oh! I got it! She was ashamed! She didn’t have to be the song had quite a bit to say!!
I wanted her body in the 90s. And now.
Love this song
She is stunning one off the most beautiful ladies ever and the song fantastic
Everyone will tell you to do "Smoke" next, but don't forget to do "Wrong Impression" because it's really good too. Also check out "Fiona Apple", "Joan Osborne", "Paula Cole" and "Natalie Merchant" if you haven't already, who are all similar artists from that era.
Love to see more Aussie female Artists reactions, such as Kyle Minogue, Delta Goodrem, Sia, Jessica Mauboy, and of course more other Aussie rock and pop artists/bands…Maybe you could do an Aussie music themed special??!!
I’ll drop more suggestions in the comments! 😁
Would be interesting to see their reaction to "Jailanguru Pakarnu" by the Warumpi Band.
You forget Ella Hooper of Killing Heidi fame
@@wayneperry7413 Weir!
Not to forget Kate Ceberano aswell.

Late 90s (1997)
Absolutely love this song!
She was great in Johnny English
ALISON MOYET WAS ONE OF THE BEST BRITISH SINGERS OF THE 90s AND THE SONG 🎵 INVISIBLE IS AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC.
Love this song by Natalie Imbruglia , Australian singer. She was an actress who appeared in the Australian TV soap series of Neighbours, which was watched by millions in the 80s and early 90s. Kylie was the biggest star of the show who left to become a very successful singer especially with the disco scene. However Natalie's was much different.
This entire album is actually really excellent. All the songs are really good.
Totalmente
This song and a few others, like Steal My Sunshine - Len or Save Tonight - Eagle Eyed Cherry, just ARE the 90's for me.
Wow one of the greatest songs/performances ever and the most beautiful lady ❤️
I had such a big crush on Natalie back then. Still love this song.
The 90's was a great decade for music and this one of a thousand examples. This song was huge back then, at least here in America. If I remember right, it hit number one and was there for a few weeks. I don't recall her having any other hits, might have been smaller ones, but this song was one of the biggest songs of the decade, and it still gets played on the radio to this day. It still doesn't sound dated, or maybe it's just me, but great song.
I remember it being so overplayed that my friends and I got sick of it that summer, kind of like “The Freshmen” by The Verve Pipe the previous summer. But now they’re both so nostalgic
@@allieren Yeah same here... lol On two of the radio stations where I live, where it played regularly, it was one of those songs that played once an hour or every ninety minutes, it did get old at times. As you mentioned, it's nostalgic now, and now when I hear it, it's great all over again. Just a really good song. The Freshman, another one that was overplayed, good one too. 90's had some great songs, but far too many were played a wee bit too much. lol
The other comments can kick rocks, the nostalgia alone drips these classic 90s songs so hard they just lift me up and away they're still so fire. Come on those lyrics fam. "That's what's going on. I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel. I'm cold and I'm ashamed."
Dido's "White Flag" is also one of the greatest female hit songs of the 90's.
White Flag was early 00’s, Thank You was late 90’s
This song has been in constant rotation in my brainlist since I heard it when it came out. Favourite from her has to be “Impressed” - so sarcastic.
Most people don't know this was a cover song... a group called Ednaswap did it originally. This is one of my favorite songs from the 90s.
I didn’t know that!
Si lo sabemos , pero Natalie Imbruglia lo canta deliciosamente
the original was recorded in Swedish actually by Liz Sørensen song was called Braendt (burned) in that version but yes Ednaswap did record the first English version as well as originally write the song which was written by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven
Late 90s- 1997. This was one of the biggest song's of the year and earned her and her first album the Grammy for Best New Artist. She has a fantastic list of songs to listen too.
So great that Jay said she has a Monica from Friends vibe - she dated David Schwimmer in real life.
God she is so talented and so absolutely gorgeous.
This song still breaks my heart. “I’m cold and I’m ashamed, lying naked on the floor,” just kills me. This guy did a number on her, and now she knows. It’s not just the pain; it’s also the vulnerability and shame that she feels.
Natalie Imbruglia is a part of what made the 90's some of the best years of my life.
Wishing I Was There is another jam from Natalie!
Billie Myers: "Kiss the Rain." Pure 90s excellence. Powerful.
One of the coolest debut singles ever.✌️
Back in the day when MTV actually played Music Videos and so did VH-1 this video got very heavy rotation! Definitely a fan favorite!
I blush every time i watch this video. It’s like she’s staring right at me. Such a catchy song
Quick fact learned from "Pop Up Video"- before the video shoot, the director told the male actor to act cold to Natalie whenever "cut" was called. The camera crew was told to just keep filming, no matter what. Her confusion to him suddenly going cold at points was genuine.
Great song by Natalie! It is definitely a 90s song...
I forgot this beautiful song. It brought back a flood of memories! Thank you!
Reminds me of my best friend, Ann Brady who died of stage 4 breast cancer March 2000, age 46. Dancing on the dance floors.
RIP Annie.
Thanks for the memories of this song...TORN.
This song really reminds me of Annie. Missing by Everything But The Girl.

And for those who remember the 80's lol
Eurogliders- Heaven (must be there)
Cheers
She also acted in the Australian soap-opera "Neighbours" ...
Natalie Imbruglia was also an actress, she appeared in the Australian Soap Neighbours
This was a huge hit for Natalie Imbruglia in 1997, and I love it. Great lyrics, fabulous tune, and her beautiful voice made sure it was a hit. ❤🔥🎵
"Empathetic decade" yep sounds about right! Best music decade eva!! Jammed to this song in my car tons of times.
😍😍🤘🤘🤘
1998 I had this song on repeat for weeks 😆
Late 90s gem! Everyone loved it. Perfect pronunciation Amber!❤
for some reason the guitar near the end just gives me goosebumps till this day! it embodies 1998 and my life back then!
Natalie won the latest version of the Masked Singer UK. Fooled everyone til the end. This song is for us Brits this is a classic of the 90s!
Love this song, she is so pretty. Love her voice.
Such a great song! This song was a huge hit. Still listen to this one often, have it in my 90s playlist.
Why am I crushing on Amber 😍😂 You're a lucky man Jay
She was and still is beautiful.
Remember this great song now! My grandkids played it often. My generation was the Australian group the Seekers with the late, great Judith Durham.
If you want to hear an Aussie with a very distinct Australian accent, may I suggest Missy Higgins as an artist to react to. Her first big hit was called Scar, it was a massive song in Australia and her accent is unmistakable.
This song is in my top 3 of all time. I absolutely love this song!
I heard this alot of 90s...brings a tear of nostalgia and joy to my eye
I don't think there's anyone in the entire UK my age who doesn't know this song aha. This tune was massive over here, it's still in my driving playlist on Spotify. Beautiful track, and one that not many people seem to know is a cover.
I'll always love this song.
This is but a taste of what is to come. Australia has been creating brilliant music consistently for about 50 years.
Thanks so much for doing this song guys. I remember when it was initially released in the UK and it was a big hit. You might also like All Saints songs Pure Shores and Never Ever which came out a little while after this. Best wishes.
YES! Love All Saints,! 👏
Hi guys you must see the stand up comedians mime to this song while your listening it’s unforgettable. Natalie performed live with him it’s that good.
Love the ending and seeing her with closed eyes, exactly how I feel in the last part of the song
She did a live version with a mime artist - you gotta see it!
I watch that several times a month, always brings a smile.
My kids and myself can't help but do the actions when we hear this track.
'bound and broken....'
David Armand, he also did some other songs such as Paul Youngs version of Marvin Gayes 'wherever I lay my hat'
Is there a good video of it anywhere. I've only seen poor quality reuploaded VHS video of the full song or great quality short clips.
@@BigDavie2000 David Armand (using a stage name Johann Lippowitz) did a sign interpretation of Torn as part of his normal act and is very funny. The live performance where Natalie Imbruglia joined in was in the 2006 Secret Policeman’s Ball at the Royal Albert Hall (London) and the comedy reaches the sublime (and the audience know it). Its on the DVD but I am not sure how else you can get to see it.
Here’s one of the videos ruclips.net/video/k9TRFSEMDNA/видео.html
The world could use a heaping helping of some '90s empathy today. Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant, Jewel, Fiona Apple, Joan Osbourne, Alanis Morissette, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Sarah McLachlan...I wish their types of sensibilities would return to the music scene. I like Taylor and Lana and Adele, but how many albums can a person put out that are just about falling in love, breaking up and plotting revenge? There's so much more to life and so much more to write and to sing about.
She is so cute! I was in my early 20's when this came out, and I was in love! I loved the way the 90's girls dressed, so adorable. Thanks!!!
Those eyes, man.
"Torn" is a song written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley. It was first recorded in 1993 in Danish (renamed "Brændt", Danish for "Burned") by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, then in 1994 by Cutler and Preven's American rock band Ednaswap, and in 1996 by American-Norwegian singer Trine Rein. "Torn" is best known as Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia's 1997 debut single.
I get the impression that Phil Thornalley was basically offering this song to every artist he produced until somebody finally made it a hit! (I would love to hear an A House version....)
I love Annie Previn's version. Fits the lyrics better imo. Natalie did a good job but they made an angst driven song into Pop and it didn't work for me. No hate Natalie's way she's a talented singer.
I saw Edenswap on The Howard Stern TV show. They did an amazing version
Good song. You also need to do Natalie Merchant- Carnival; Dido- White Flag (her voice reminds me of the ips and downs of Cranberries singer Delores O.) & also do Jewel Foolish games (nice piano and voice) and Who will save your soul (incredibly insane vocals)
This is one of the most iconic song of the 90's!!!
How about doing the Kate Bush duet with Peter Gabriel , Dont Give Up.
I love watching you guys react to the music from my college years…I love the memories it brings back. You guys need to react to the Indigo Girls. (Galileo or Closer to Fine)
I miss the 90s. Natalie was so hot and this is such a good song.
This song is iconic. I was 6 when this came out! The best!
so glad you found her, Thanks for checking out Aussie artists.
I was just on your other chanel, I love your reaction to The green mile!
Great song! Have to suggest Natalie Merchant 10000 maniacs or solo. "wonder" or" Carnival"
One of my favorite songs of the 90s. Top 10 easily.
When this song was a big hit there was some controversy. If I recall correctly she falsely claimed in interviews that she wrote the song. The song was really written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley. It was first recorded in 1993 in Danish (renamed "Brændt", Danish for "Burned") by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, then in 1994 by Cutler and Preven's American rock band Ednaswap, and in 1996 by American-Norwegian singer Trine Rein.
While I appreciate the song itself, what you described here is the precise reason why I don't appreciate Natalie as an artist... She's a fraud; and to the best of my knowledge she never did publicly declare acknowledgement of her deceit. Even if she did, it doesn't change the fact that she lied about it to begin with and her retraction wouldn't have been known by everyone who was misinformed. She completely dishonoured the Australian music industry. It's not hard to be an honest person.
Please check out Fiona Apple! Her first big song was "Criminal" which is more up tempo and another recommendation would be "Shadowboxer".
P.S. My hubby showed me y'all's movie reaction channel and I subbed to that right away. I moved over to the music reaction channel, subbed, and binge watched. Y'all are now my favorite reactors! I think y'all are wonderful and sending my best wishes!
Yeah just like a feel good song and if you listen to the chorus " Illusions never changed into something real, I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn"...DEEP
One of the best covers from the 90's
Everyone had this image of her from Neighbours as being a sweet girl next door sort of girl, then she started her music career cut her hair a bit shorter than what it was and released this song, and it turns out she's quite a rocky, indie sort of girl as opposed to the pop of Kylie and Jason which we were expecting.
This is represented in this video, you have an image in your head that it's being filmed in a beautiful apartment with bright sunlight shining through the window, and it turns out it's actually a film set.
the video is representative of the words. You see a happy couple that seem very much in love but things aren't what they seem.
@@jedislap8726 quite possibly, but different people see different meanings in things.
i HAAAATE this song until this day 😂
Natalie is a popular Australian singer. This song is a cover done by Natalie in the 90s. Natalie is the former partner of Daniel John's from Silverchair. Most people here would know of Silverchair from Australia. They made it big in the US too. They have a grunge sound and the guys were only 15 when they began. I suggest Tomorrow, please
That hunk of burning love was an unknown model until this video and he started turning up in shows soon after.
'illusion never changed into something real' is one of the best song lines ever
My favorite thing about these two is how respectfully they approach each song they listen to. They listen critically but with an open mind. Always refreshing. Keep up the great work!
Great song and she's ridiculously cute, heartbreak material😂
Around that time I used to skydive . I would jump out of planes, open the chute and swirl around often with this song in my head .
This song rules!!! All the guys love it as well!!!
