Hi Tom, can you please post a direct link here for the exact wand we need to purchase? I’m clicking on the link you provided & it just opens an Amazon page with many to choose from….’Old wand”, “V1/V2 wand”, etc.
So I'm currently adding this. TO ANYONE WHO IS DOING THIS, USE BOILING WATER TO HEAT UP THE PLASTIC NUT! It literally took me 20 seconds to get this nut around the two bends. Thanks Tom, for showing us the way!
I love how you showed the failed attempts and things that you experienced to be wrong (like using the needle tip pliers and not being able to put it back on, or that the wand got scratched using the wrench), absolutely amazing video!
Thanks for showing the full process here and including the parts where things go poorly and frustration ensues. Too many how-to vids skip those bits, and to me, they make the final reassembly that much more satisfying. Plus it’s helpful to know which shortcuts do and don’t work. Looking forward to sweating and swearing through this upgrade myself!
To get the little bugger easier over the bend, put it on hot water for a few minutes. Little olive oil on the wand, twist over the bend and it goes on very easy.
Bought an ECP3420 a month ago from Amazon and finally got the chance to replace the wand. The white plastic nut was a pain, eventually used the hair dryer for half a minute to heat up the white nut and applied oil to the wand, then I used a 5/8 wrench to push the nut and it slid off in half a second. 5/8 wrench fits almost perfectly on the nut so applying inward pressure is easy. My fingers are very small so even though I tried rubber gloves pushing with the hands did not help. While the problem with the white nut is now easy to overcome with plenty of the suggestions the next pain is the rubber hose. My rubber hose had a red covering and a pex hose clamp. Pex hose clamps cannot be reused and where I am it is hard to buy so I used cable ties for now. Also, another problem I face was setting down the white washer I didn’t really pay attention to it and then I realized that boiler is not sitting properly for me to screw it. If anyone is planning to use cable ties first make sure that boiler sits appropriately because eventually you will need to remove the cable ties on the hose to fix the issue. Other than that, now the machine works well. Happy Modding! Edit 1: So cable tie didn’t hold the steam hose securely on the steam wand, I ordered the hose clamp from Amazon and secured it with a screw based hose clamp. It still seems to me that the hose might come off as I got a 1/4 inch hose clamp which is a little bit bigger in size, so it doesn’t go below that ridge on the steam wand. I could only secure the hose right over the top of the ridge.
I did the same mod for my 685 back before I gave it away - getting the plastic ball 'nut' across the bend is insanely difficult just using your hands alone. What I highly suggest to make it easier is to oil the wand at the bend, and use pliers on the plastic ball to twist it whilst pushing/ pulling it across the bend. If you're concerned with scratching the ball 'nut', don't worry, it doesn't affect the performance if you do (I scratched mine up but it didn't matter). However, if you really want to avoid scratching it, just put a few layers of masking tape or painters tape onto the pliers jaws and use it that way.
I know this video is a little old but for anyone else that comes across it now if the wiring is attached with pish on space connectors and you take pictures so you reconnect it all correctly i would completely unhook and remove the brew group from the machine getting that boiler and head out of the way will give you SO much more room to work
Thank you for this amazing video Tom! It was helpful to watch through before performing the wand replacement. As other have mentioned, my ECP3420 (US model, bought in 2015) had metal crimps holding the hose between the wand and the boiler. I was able to carefully disassemble the crimp by prying the metal parts. I re-used the existing crimps by bending the metal to expand them with needle nose pliers and then re-crimping with large flush cutters. Others may want to look at small screw-on type hose clamps or buying a single ear metal crimp kit. The size is 9.5mm diameter for both clamps. One tip for getting the plastic ball onto the new wand is to lightly heat the plastic using hot air or stovetop. This made it much easier to twist and slide the ball past the curves of the new wand. Overall it's working great now and I have LOTS of steam with the new wand. Can't wait to start practicing my milk steaming the proper way :)
Hate to bug you, but I recently ran into the same problem, I was tempted to try anyways, however I had issues removing the group head which I assume I would have needed to do to get the old wand out. Any advice?
@@YoungLink18 had the same problem while adding my steam wand which I am currently in the process of doing, I would make sure you took oout all five screws and make sure that the steam wand knob isn’t going through the body of the machine
My steam wand has arrived and the operation will begin. I purchase this machine and started my coffee adventure thanks to your channel because you made it fun. 👍🏼
Thank you Tom for the Video, I just upgraded mine 10 minutes ago & it took me about 5 minutes to get the white plastic nut out. It’s a lot easier to soak the white nut in boiling water for 5-10 minutes and rub oil on the wand. The whole process took me about 30-45 minutes.
I plan to treat myself to an upgraded wand once I learn how to make actually decent tasting espresso ☕️ Before I do, how many holes on the wand tip work best and for what situations? 🥛 Thank you always for your wisdom! I look forward to this fun project, especially after the comments to make the hardest parts of this upgrade easier for those who came later to the party 🎉
3:22 "Did you put your name in the goblet of fire?", Dumbledore asked calmly. I found a used one of these machines and I will definitely be coming back to this video when I get it. Thanks!
When I was modding mine I used a hair dryer to heat up the plastic bit when I am pushing it in, it turns out to be way easier, just a gentle push and its in.
I watch your reference about delonghi since before I bought one. your video is so rich of insight and also this one. But after watching full video and see the hard things that need to do, and thinking that I really lame at that point, so I better buy a new one. Thank's tom
My rancilio steamwand was just delivered and I’m getting ready to attempt this! I accidentally lost the rubber valve from the stock steamwand on my ECP3420 when I was attempting to wash it! So I saw your video and that the upgrade was possible, but didn’t actually watch the whole thing until now. Probably should’ve done that first. Lol! What the heck I’m gonna try it. Thank you for this video and all of the others. you have pretty much become my go to source for any info that I need. I’m about six months in and still trying to get it right!
So it took me two days of working on it here and there, stepping away each time I became frustrated lol. And everything that could’ve went wrong did, but I finally did it. It is definitely better than the stock steam wand, although still waiting for my milk steaming skills to improve. I also want to mention that for The first time in my six month journey of home espresso brewing, I was able to get a bag of fresh roasted espresso from a local roaster. Part of the problem I have had is that I do not have a grinder good enough for espresso. However, this local roasters website gave you the option to have them grind the beans for you. On the drop-down menu, I selected home espresso and figured I would have to make some adjustments regardless. Wouldn’t you know it came perfectly ground at the right size and I was able to brew the perfect shot of espresso for the very first time. I mean Crema,, tiger stripes, 36 g in about 30 seconds - the whole 9 yards! And it made the best latte I’ve ever tasted. For anyone wondering, it’s the miscela bar brew from La Prima in Pittsburgh. I always hear people emphasizing the importance of fresh roasted beans, but I sort of assumed that I had to be doing something else wrong and that was the problem. But it’s actually pretty unbelievable that it makes such a difference! Learning more every day. Now I just need to find a decent grinder on sale. Do you happen to know offhand the cheapest grinder available that would still give me the grind size I need for espresso? It seems to me that it’s going to be around the $200 range. Does that sound right? And thank you again, Tom for the great video!
Improvised lol. That was definitely the worst part. And the most time consuming. I did see where someone mentioned these clamps in the comments, but hoping everything would be like Tom‘s video I wasn’t really prepared for them. But after some trial and error I was able to use needle nose pliers, and a flat head screwdriver to loosen it enough to remove. The only problem is I could not get it to tighten back up when trying to put it back on. I Later learned there is a specific tool for fastening them that I certainly did not have or even know about at that point. So I rummaged around in my garage until I found one of those old fashion hose clamps that you turn the screw to tighten it. However, even the smallest one I had was sort of big and clunky, and after about a week I could feel the steam wand lose a little bit of pressure. So I had to take everything back apart and saw that there was a tiny bit of moisture escaping the end of the hose where I used that clamp. So just for a temporary one time use kind of fix I removed that clamp and fastened the hose with two zip ties until I could get to the store and get an actual new spring clamp and a tool to fasten it with. I ended up purchasing a different clamp then what was on there originally but apparently it’s still considered the same type. Not sure how well I fastened it as I obviously am learning as I go, but since then, so far so good!
Thanks for this guide! To get the white knurl piece over the curves, water didn't help me, but I cut a 1" section from a piece of clear tubing (the tubing itself was approx. 1" diam) and cut that ring of tubing, so that it could curl onto itself as needed (closing like a hand). With that wrapped around the white knurl, and using a channel-lock plyers, the piece moved pretty easily to its final position. My used ECP3420 did NOT have removeable clips on the hose for the old steam wand... they were "pinch" clamps, which had to be cut off. I found an adjustable clip at home depot that fit (1/4" to 5/8". A bit less forgiving for taking up a bit of space, but it all worked in the end.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Ah, I wish it were so! This used 3420 I picked up on ebay seems to be ancient and unique... from what I can tell from inspection, photos and trying a thin craftsman flat head, the bottom screws on this one doesn't (seem to) have a center slot or outside edge slots... hmmm. (As you may recall, I mentioned my hose clamps were non-removeable "pinch clamps"), and it wouldn't surprise me to find out I'll need a more specialized tool for the bottom screws. If you happen to figure out what the actual tool type and size required is, I'd love to find out. Thanks for your response.
I must have got lucky. Mine slipped right around the curve, not heat, no hammer, no wrench. Just a little twisting and small amount of effort. Thanks for the video.
very helpful video start to finish. love the summary on tools used. and to see a really positive result, this is totally motivating to proceed with DIY. thanks Tom!
Perfect Timing! The Ranchillo steam wand is on my counter waiting to go in my ecp3120. Waiting on a dimmer switch to install at same time so I can pre infuse. Hoping the wand helps with my frothing skills. I seem to get decent foam but my latte art skills are poor 😟. I’ll have spent more on mods than for the 3120 🤣
Do you have a video on how to steam using the Rancilio Wand after install? I just installed one and using the 3 hole cap. Having a difficult time producing creamy milk . Thanks!
Great video, but knowing my record of stripping things down then building back up, I'm going to give this a miss, or get a double female connection and cut externally!
Met some problem with my ecp3420. The iron clip that hold the tube is different from the video, which is so hard to put it back. So I use cable tie as an alternative. The steam is good at first few second but gradually declined without seeing things leaking.
Hmm, well it might be leaking if you're losing power, or your boiler could be running out of steam. You can sometimes reuse those hose clips, or you can look for a small hose clamp from the hardware store.
Thanks for the video, really good, but sadly not enough close up shots of how the different bits fit together. In future if unable to do it on video, I would suggest trying to take photos with a good camera and splicing that into the video later for extra detail.
Great Video !!! I have 2 questions : 1) I have the Delonghi ECP 35.31 , very similar to yours, Can I also upgrade the steam wand as well ? 2) I also want to upgrade to portafilter but I don't know which is compatible to ECP 35.31. Do you have any suggestion ?
hi Tom! I saw (and performed) you video about the Rancilio on the dedica and also there you had troubles putting the black grip in the wand. I didnt have gloves so I had to think of something else and eventually I did it under running water and it moved like butter. afterwards I squeezed it a bit and dried it for few second but it did the job perfectly.
Great video! I just did the mod to my Stilosa, far easier than this machine. Did have the same issue with the white plastic bit but a little warming with a heat gun, went over very easy. The power of the steam is crazy in comparison. Heats milk so fast! I need to tune back into using this wand to get my milk perfect. Great modification! Interestingly, the prices of these wands vary by about 50%. I got the more expensive one and the finish was perfect but I do wonder if the cheaper ones are of the same quality.
Hi! I;m currently trying to switch out my steam wand and I'm having trouble even opening the facia. How did you open yours? Is there anyway to contact you to help more?
I have seen a reddit post adding a pressure gauge and dimmer to control flow rate. Was wondering if you could make a video on that? Love your content. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I have been experimenting with multi camera setups. The one above is not ideal, because I cannot see its screen, and also sometimes my head is in the way. But I will try to make that better next time. If that's what you mean?
More recent models of the Delonghi ECP 3420 (purchased new from Amazon as the seller and Amazon as the shipper in July 2024) have a red hose cover and non-removeable metal clips. Anyone who runs into this, you may want to make sure that you have a pair of clippers that can cut through a metal tiny zip tie sized metal clip + you'll want to buy a replacement hose clip.
Just did this with the ECP 3120. Here are tips for those trying with a newer machine: 1) The Oetiker clamps are a bitch to remove. Seriously they’re terrible. I used a flat head to force them open, but you may be able to cut them off if you have the right tool. Once they’re off, though, they’re done, so you need to buy a replacement (I’d recommend buying two-one for each end of the hose). I bought two of the smallest I could find at Lowe’s. They’re the kind that have the notch at the end for a flat head to tighten or loosen the clamp. Mine just barely fit in with the frame, so be careful about the size you buy. 2) Getting the plastic nut on was way easier than the clamps. People have already said this, but I’d recommend boiling the nut, sticking the wand in the freezer, and then putting olive oil on the wand then immediately taking the nut out of boiling water and forcing it on. It went on super easily for me.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner and thank you! I’ve learned so much about espresso from you. Only issue im having is getting the vortex to form with the angle of the wand. Since this one is pretty much straight down as opposed to angled like other machines, is there a good way to angle the wand/pitcher? Appreciate it!
Can you help me. Can you make a video of putting on an alternative nozzle with the small hole for making silky milk for latte art? I bought one but every variation of putting rubber rings on and with the rubber nozzle under it, with the plastic on the nozzle out, blah blah..but it still kept leaving on the top. Like spitting out water. I can't figure out how to put it on. I have the same stilosa you use.
I tried the upgrade on my ECP3420 and found that instead of a wire spring hose clamps my ECP3420 had a oetiker clamps. I had to order an oetiker clamp set and I'm waiting for delivery now. A worm-gear clamp won't fit.
I just did this mod to my EC260BK after seeing many recommendations for it on similar machines. It is indeed just as painful of a process to get the white plastic nut up into the correct spot. In fact, I tried sanding down the inside of the nut to open up more space but I would highly recommend not doing this because it’s important for the wand to sit snug in the nut so it can spin and rotate properly. I think olive oil and nitrile-coated work gloves are mandatory… Also you may find that the hose in the EC260 has a red braided sleeve to help protect it from damage which is nice! However mine had PEX clamps instead of spring clamps securing the hose. After removing those I wasn’t able to reuse them… I ended up buying worm gear clamps but would much prefer those spring clamps if you can find any that fit properly. But it’s truly a night and day difference from the stock steam wand… good luck!
@@kieranju thank you so much for your input/thoughts. I might one day draw up the courage to do this. Tom’s hack with the cable tie once you take of the pannarello wand is working sufficiently.
Hi Tom! I love your content. Do you think it could be posible to mod de Delonghi Dedica with a 3 way solenoid valve? I believe its the only thing missing to make this the perfect machine for small apartments
Honestly, I wouldn't install one. It's one of the things that draws me back to the Delonghi's, even after using much more expensive machines. Since Delonghi has no 3 way valve, the pressure stays on the puck, and you have to wait about 60 seconds to remove it, BUT, the pucks knock out cleaner than ANY other machine I have ever used. That is such an ergonomic advantage for me, that I keep coming back to the Dedica, ECP, and so on.
I have the replacement Rancilio Silvia wand, and took it apart today. The line that’s connected to the wand looks different on my ECP 3634. I’m afraid I’ll do more damage than upgrading so I just put everything back together. I’m afraid to try again.
Hey Tom - thank you for the awesome content as always. I currently have an ECP 3630 with stock wand (in "advance mode"). After pulling a shot, I switch to steam mode and just before ready light comes on, I purge valve for a few seconds prior to steaming milk. I noticed that even after I purge for a few seconds, a little bit of water continues to come out for up to 25 seconds with steam. Is this normal? I have measured that comes out with steam AFTER purging for a few seconds and steaming for 35 seconds, and it's about 25 ML that get's added to milk. Water coming out with steam is also a little intermittent, almost like stuttering. My milk comes out watery at times and I feel this may be contributing to it. Any help is appreciated!
Hi there! Well, if you wait for the steam to become completely dry, it's gonna take a while, with ANY boiler machine in my experience. I'd just go for a happy medium, and purge out the majority without having to spend too much time doing so. Cheers!
Howdy pall! I have been using my ECP3630 for a month now. What I have found is that the first run of steam after going from shot mode to steam mode is weak and wet. What I have been doing is the following “hacking” process. Start by pulling your shot, then switching to steam mode. Wait until the temperature light turns green telling you the boiler is up to temp. Now, open the steam valve while holding a rag beneath the steam wand. Let it purge until it completely is out of pressure and the green temperature light turns off. This should take about 30-60 seconds. Now, turn off the steam wand and let the boiler come back on. Wait an additional 30 seconds until the green temperature light turns on a second time and then, get to actually steaming. What you will find with this method is that the steam pressure will be SUBSTANTIALLY higher and will run at this high pressure almost indefinitely. The steam the second time the boiler fills is also very dry, and will not spit out water. Why this works is beyond me. Possibly the heating element is not strong enough in these little machines to turn all the water already inside the boiler at “shot temp” and heat it up to “steam temp”. Perhaps when you purge all of this water out of the system the boiler is able to actually get screaming hot and subsequently turns every bit of water introduced to it by the pump into high quality dry steam. Whatever the case may be, it works if your patient. Some day I hope we will both be able to upgrade to a Rancillio Silva. Until that day, hack until you break the thing!
Nice Video! Is the Rancilio Steam Wand going to get a lot better results Vs. your other method of simply removing the Panarello part and add the Zip Tie? I'm getting goos milk results with the simple method of just removing the panrllo. Thanks!
Hi there! The newer versions of the La Specialista already has the nicer "Arte" steam wand, but the older ones didn't I guess. The procedure will likely be both similar and different. I made a video on how to take apart a La Specialista, maybe that will help: ruclips.net/video/Nqwr1eMrKg8/видео.html
hi tom, got an idea, i think there's a potential to increase the steam pressure even more by changing the thermostat to a higher one. what do you think? i want to be able to temp surf like in gaggia. however i think the temp is too low to be able to do that. ecp probably only could heat up up to 125 degress
I don't know about that. I mean you could. I get a TON of steam power in its stock configuration. Just start steaming before the thermostat is met, and then you will have more than enough steam power.
I have the 33.21 model, can the advanced mode be done? I noticed that the panarello is shorter than all the other models. Thank you and Merry xmas Tom!
I am thinking about it...most dimmers are so large. I am looking for a more discrete one. Do you have a suggestion? Which market are you in? Dimmer designs differ based on country.
Hey Tom, would you recommend the 3630 the most? I'm just assuming that the higher number means "better"? Is there any other machines within the same price range you would recommend or rather go for?
Hi Tom, would you say this Delonghi range is “better” than the Dedica? Also is the portafilter similar size and could I use the IMS basket from my Dedica?
Hi Andrews, I like the ECP range better, if I am honest. I get a real kick out of the ECP 35.31 that I have. Yes, the IMS basket fits in ALL Delonghis: Dedica, ECP, EC, La Specialista, etc.
Hi Tom! I have a 1Zpresso J-Max and I'm looking for a bang-for-the-buck espresso machine. Which one do you recommend, Delonghi ECP 3420 or Delonghi Stilosa EC260? I'm also planning to make the "Advance Mode" in whichever. TIA
Do you have experience in changing the steam wand for Breville Roma espresso machine? I’ve looked everywhere to know if I can change the short wand to a good long legit one. Thanks!! 😊
how do you fix the frother not working? Delonghi ECP 3420. will replacing it do the trick? I am also not sure which wand to choose when I clicked on the link you have.
Some vintages have different types of clamps. You might have to pry it off. If you're lucky you maybe able to re-use it, otherwise you'll have to find a small hose clamp. Good luck!
The single-ear clamp comes off easily, just wedge a small flat screwdriver blade into the end near the little tabs and twist. Not sure what to replace it with though..
@@TomsCoffeeCornerThanks! I followed your directions, but did cut the plastic holder. This made things much easier, and ,as far as I can tell, had no ill effects.
I plan on doing this mod thanks Tom. Has anyone done a mod to add a small LED inside pointed at the water tank that would illuminate once the machine is switched on? I find it difficult to see the amount of water remaining
Any tips for getting the white nut off the original steam wand? I literally feel like I'm going to break it. I've resorted to whacking with a hammer and trying to twist it off.
Tom, great vid! This is my exact setup (paired with a Kingrinder K4). I can confirm that the mod was harder than expected, but worth it. I’m very curious - how much better is espresso from fancy machines like the Lelits you recently tested? I’ve reached a point where I feel like I need to spend 10x more on my setup, to (maybe) get 10% better results. Is this right? The only things I feel I’m missing are pre-infusion and better temp control, which would help with shot consistency.
@@adamnealis not really looking to mod my machine further, I’m quite happy with the coffee it makes. I’m just interested to hear how much better I can expect my espresso to get if I go all-out and upgrade to a prosumer machine. Tom is (literally) using the exact setup as me, so I’d love to get his thoughts
@@p_dubski I’ve also got this exact setup with the K4 grinder and a ecp3120. The rancillo steam wand is on my counter and plan to do dimmer mod at same time to be able to pre infuse.
Hi Patrick, well that probably depends on your palate. I think you get get really good shots out of the ECP, if it is heated up for a while, and if you have good puck prep and good beans - but that goes for all espresso machines. Does the espresso get markedly better in my opinion on a $500 or $1000 machine? Not really for my palate, no. But the $20k machines that are heated up all day and have temp and pressure profiling do make a more syrupy and sweeter espresso. In the end, I think the bean is the most important, then the pressure (shouldn't be too high), then appropriate heat. These little machines do damn good for their size and price.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Much appreciate the reply - as with most hobbies, it's easy to get carried away and constantly look for the next shiny object. Keep up the good work!
Hi Tom one more question for you. After seeing your review I was considering upgrading to the Breville Duo temp pro from my ECP 3121 which I got for $20 on market place and have enjoyed pulling apart & playing with. In your opinion is it a worthwhile upgrade? Does the duo temp Pro pull a better shot or steam the milk better?
Hmm, the Duo Temp Pro is a nice machine, with a PID (non settable). But to be honest, I do not find the espresso or milk steaming much better. I have gotten excellent shots from the ECP. I'd have to experiment more with the Duo Temp Pro however. I think it would be more of a side step. Your next machine should be one in which you can adjust the PID temp to whatever you want, like the Lelit Grace.
Hey Tom! Great video thank you! I am new to espresso machines, I bought this one and my stock steam wand was not producing good steamed milk, so I just installed the Rancilio this evening, and I realized the issue is more than just the steam wand. When the machine is ready, it does not put all that steam like yours does! A little bit of steam comes out and then it’s basically hot air. It also does not have the same power that yours has. Any ideas what’s going on?
Hi, I also the same issue with my EC230.BK machine. The steam is not as strong as Tom's. I tried to follow Tom's suggesstion by not to wait until the light comes on. I found that there's a slight improvement on the steam power, but still not powerfull enough. Also, I notice that the steam is getting more stronger after like 30-40 seconds. Unfortunately, I can't continue frothing as the milk/jug become too hot for my palm. Any other tips that I could try to improve the steam?
@@IRISHTRETTO a new machine or steam wand? Anyway, after several trial and inspection for any leaking/blockage, I decided to reinstall the original wand as (in my case) it produces a better result (due to stronger steam flow). However, prior reinstall the original wand, I noticed that the hole at the tip of the original wand is smaller a few micrometers. Perhaps this has some impact to the steam flow...Nevertheless, my replacement steam wand is a rancilio-like one, definetly the quality not as good as the original one 😅
I imagine that if I had a machine just for fun, I removed the internal machinery and made its drawer out of wood, I would customize the entire machine in wood.😅
Im in a pickle, the collar piece that keeps the steam wand in place so it swivels is broken!! I even super glued it and everything and i tried to screw it in again and it snapped, idk what to do anymore :/, but if theres nothing to be done than so be :(
I suggest watching this, maybe twice, and reading through the comments before doing this mod yourselves.
Thanks for watching, comments welcome!

Thanks for that awesome tip!
Saved me 30 minutes this Friday🎉
How long did you leave it in the boiling water!
@@cassyaguilar3969haha just came here to check on this as well
I got a small file to file away on the inside of the nut to make it easier
I love how you showed the failed attempts and things that you experienced to be wrong (like using the needle tip pliers and not being able to put it back on, or that the wand got scratched using the wrench), absolutely amazing video!
Thanks! I hope you guys can learn through my mistakes. Cheers!
My machine is leaking and these are the best instructions for taking an ECP apart. You rock Tom.
Yes. If there is a problem make sense to go through this torture. And yes. It is excelent instruction. But not for the wand...
To get the little bugger easier over the bend, put it on hot water for a few minutes. Little olive oil on the wand, twist over the bend and it goes on very easy.
Thanks for that tip!
Thank you Tom for providing us with the best guide on upgrading the ECP 3420/3630/3120.
Awesome! I am glad to hear it, and I hope you have fun experimenting! Tom
Thanks so much for the video. I made it on my Delonghi 33.21, it took me more than an hour of suffering. A real pain but totally worth it!
My steam wand has arrived and the operation will begin. I purchase this machine and started my coffee adventure thanks to your channel because you made it fun. 👍🏼
...was the operation a success? 😊
Thanks for posting your experience! Have fun :-)
I plan to treat myself to an upgraded wand once I learn how to make actually decent tasting espresso ☕️ Before I do, how many holes on the wand tip work best and for what situations? 🥛
Thank you always for your wisdom!
Thanks for that tip!
I watch your reference about delonghi since before I bought one. your video is so rich of insight and also this one.
But after watching full video and see the hard things that need to do, and thinking that I really lame at that point, so I better buy a new one. Thank's tom
My rancilio steamwand
was just delivered and I’m getting ready to attempt this!
Thanks for the feedback and good luck with the mod! Tom
Julia- How did you work around the clamp holding the steam tubing? It is not a SPRING CLIP that you can use with a pliers!
@@julih8425 - Thank you for that information. I will order several different size spring clips and give it another try!
Thanks for posting your tips! Tom
@@TomsCoffeeCorner My pleasure. Tom, what is the size and style of screwdriver needed to remove bottom base screws from ECP3420, please?
@@martyg.5591 Just a flat head screwdriver. You have to find one that fits between the bit in the middle, and the outsides.
I take the above back! I DID find a small-enuf flat head to fit in the "valley" of the bottom screws, and they did begin to turn. Yay! Thanks.
I’ll have spent more on mods than for the 3120 🤣
Can you share the dimmer switch info ?
Oh that's how it looks like inside, very nice video Tom thanks😊😊😊
Do you have a video on how to steam using the Rancilio Wand after install? I just installed one and using the 3 hole cap. Having a difficult time producing creamy milk . Thanks!
Heat the white nut in hot water and cool the ranchero in the freezer. It goes on way easier
It's time to make this modofication on my Dedica !
Thanks for the video, really good, but sadly not enough close up shots of how the different bits fit together. In future if unable to do it on video, I would suggest trying to take photos with a good camera and splicing that into the video later for extra detail.
That's a good idea for next time. Should be clear enough though, as there really isn't much you need to disassemble.
Pro tip: if you are not able to slide the white plastic ball, just make a cut on side, it becomes 1000x easier
A powerful economical machine
I did it! Works great! Seems to have fixed my steaming issue as well :)
Wow, that’s a lot of trouble for a steam wand! Makes me happy I don’t like milk drinks. So much easier to open up the Gaggia!
Great Video !!!
I have 2 questions :
1) I have the Delonghi ECP 35.31 , very similar to yours, Can I also upgrade the steam wand as well ?
2) I also want to upgrade to portafilter but I don't know which is compatible to ECP 35.31. Do you have any suggestion ?
1) ECP 3420 = ECP 35.31, they are the same
2) all of delonghi's machine use 51mm afaik
Thanks for that tip, and for sharing!
Thanks for sharing! I agree, steaming like this is way better! Cheers, Tom
Hi! I;m currently trying to switch out my steam wand and I'm having trouble even opening the facia. How did you open yours? Is there anyway to contact you to help more?
Let’s go upgrading my stilosa in 2 days just ordered it on Amazon glad to hear it’s a bit easier. I’ll heat up the ball and should be set cheers
Great job! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for this. I just got the wand and will try today. I am trying to get the most of my little ecp3420 before I upgrade haha
This is awesome! Im excited to do this! Thank you for the video !
I have seen a reddit post adding a pressure gauge and dimmer to control flow rate. Was wondering if you could make a video on that? Love your content. Keep up the good work.
Well, I did do that for the Dedica - process is similar, at least for the dimmer. Pressure gauge should be just about the same, too. Cheers!
Tom, I would light to see closer video capture…. But I love how you explain the procedure. Vielen Dank
Thanks! I have been experimenting with multi camera setups. The one above is not ideal, because I cannot see its screen, and also sometimes my head is in the way. But I will try to make that better next time. If that's what you mean?
Yes, from your camera angle is not so good to see the details. But thanks for inspiring us to improve our espresso machine. Nur weiter so😊
More recent models of the Delonghi ECP 3420 (purchased new from Amazon as the seller and Amazon as the shipper in July 2024) have a red hose cover and non-removeable metal clips.
Anyone who runs into this, you may want to make sure that you have a pair of clippers that can cut through a metal tiny zip tie sized metal clip + you'll want to buy a replacement hose clip.
You need to do the manometer mod on this machine if possible.
luckily i bought 31 21 with this already done ,by the previous owner :)
Haha, even better!
Interesting video! I was surprised it didn't start with the usual disclaimer.🤣
Just did this with the ECP 3120. Here are tips for those trying with a newer machine:
1) The Oetiker clamps are a bitch to remove.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
At the 7th minute I’m sweating like crazy just watching you 😂😂😂😂😂. Well done
Hi Tom! Nice video like always! Did you try to install a dimmer and a manomether on the ecp 35.31 or another similar model? Thank you so much!
Nope, not yet I haven't. Maybe in the future. Cheers!
Hi - I have just done the mod and am struggling to get any pressure out of the wand, any ideas or hints would be appreciated??
Would it better to warm the end of the hose in hot water to make it easier to get over the hump .🤔
Thanks for showing us this mod. I was frustrated and annoyed just watching you perform it. I will never ever attempt this. LOL!
No worries!
I'm imagining my wife's reaction to me buying a $400+ machine and then getting out tools and a mallet 😅
This machine is not $400
If you bought this machine for $400 usd or cad you got swindled
Thanks Tom. Do you think this will work on the EC 260?
Yes sir!
I think olive oil and nitrile-coated work gloves are mandatory…
Also you may find that the hose in the EC260 has a red braided sleeve to help protect it from damage which is nice!
@@kieranjuHey! Did you purchase the same steam wand replacement? On Amazon, there is an “Old” and “New” version of the Rancilio.
Good looking shot!!!!!!!
Hi Tom! I love your content. Do you think it could be posible to mod de Delonghi Dedica with a 3 way solenoid valve? I believe its the only thing missing to make this the perfect machine for small apartments
Wouldn't that be insanely hard to do?
I think saving up for a second hand breville bambino would be way better
It might be a braided hose. I think those require a new hose clamp to reattach. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing
May i kniw This is one or three hole sir?
1 hole. Cheers!
Hello, I would like to know if, this change can be applied to the Delonghi Stilosa EC260?
Yes, it ought to be just about the same.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Scrolling through the comments for this question and answer, thank you.
It puzzles me that Delonghi is not including a proper steam wand when its obviously an easy fix.
Standard one is easier for most of this machine buyers who are beginners
Nice Video! Is the Rancilio Steam Wand going to get a lot better results Vs. your other method of simply removing the Panarello part and add the Zip Tie? I'm getting goos milk results with the simple method of just removing the panrllo.
Thanks!
No, if you get good results like that, you can leave it. The Rancilio allows you to get deeper into the milk pitcher though.
Thank you! Also easier to clean the rubber built in one ( without panarello )
is it the "V1/V2" Rancilio Silvia steam wand ? or the "Old version" one ?
Hello there Tom!! Would ir be possible to change the wand on a La Specialista EC9335BK, with the same procedure here???
Have a wonderful week🤗
You can do it, but that shorter nozzle requires a little more finesse in the frothing.
Tom will you do a dimmer switch demo on this machine
I am thinking about it...most dimmers are so large. I am looking for a more discrete one. Do you have a suggestion? Which market are you in? Dimmer designs differ based on country.
Hey Tom, would you recommend the 3630 the most? I'm just assuming that the higher number means "better"? Is there any other machines within the same price range you would recommend or rather go for?
The ECP3630 is an ECP3420 but with metal sides. Yes, I still very much like this little machine.
Maybe you mentioned it by I missed it, but in what way is the new one better than the original one?
You can steam better with this wand. Cheers!
Hi Tom! I have a 1Zpresso J-Max and I'm looking for a bang-for-the-buck espresso machine. Which one do you recommend, Delonghi ECP 3420 or Delonghi Stilosa EC260? I'm also planning to make the "Advance Mode" in whichever. TIA
I give the ECP the edge over the EC260, but they are almost the same.
Which rancilio wand? The us option gives me three choices. Thanks
I think they're the same. I've installed a V1 on mine. Cheers!
Do you have experience in changing the steam wand for Breville Roma espresso machine? I’ve looked everywhere to know if I can change the short wand to a good long legit one. Thanks!! 😊
Nope, sorry!
Thank you! Your videos are very helpful. 😊
Stuck with getting the white nut through the curve. Oil and hot water’s not working 😢 could it be the plastic’s old?
I'm stuck here too, have tried boiling the nut in water and using oil. Did you have any success in the end?
how do you fix the frother not working? Delonghi ECP 3420. will replacing it do the trick? I am also not sure which wand to choose when I clicked on the link you have.
If your machine isn't steaming properly, it could be the pump, the OPV, or the steam valve itself.
Tom- The 3240 does not have spring clips to remove the steam hose. It has a crimp clamp! How do we work around it?
Some vintages have different types of clamps. You might have to pry it off. If you're lucky you maybe able to re-use it, otherwise you'll have to find a small hose clamp. Good luck!
The single-ear clamp comes off easily, just wedge a small flat screwdriver blade into the end near the little tabs and twist. Not sure what to replace it with though..
Thank you!! Can't you just cut the plastic ball a bit? Its function is only to let the wand rotate, right?
I wouldn't recommend altering the plastic holder, it's a press fit.
@@TomsCoffeeCornerThanks! I followed your directions, but did cut the plastic holder. This made things much easier, and ,as far as I can tell, had no ill effects.
I was wondering if and when the hammer would appear...
Just a little love tap... :)
awesome vid
I plan on doing this mod thanks Tom. Has anyone done a mod to add a small LED inside pointed at the water tank that would illuminate once the machine is switched on? I find it difficult to see the amount of water remaining
I have the same issue. A simple light would help a lot. I’m thinking about it but no action yet 😉
Any tips for getting the white nut off the original steam wand? I literally feel like I'm going to break it. I've resorted to whacking with a hammer and trying to twist it off.
You could persuade it with a wrench, and pry it off.
There are multiple wands listed on Amazon, none for the ECP 35.31 any suggestions on which wand to get? I think it is the V1/V2
That's true, it is confusing. AFAIK, both V1 and V2 will work. This is the exact one I ordered here: amzn.to/3ThdRCS
Is there a PID solution for your machine? My Ms Silvia PID does pre-infusion and temp control.
Looks like the steamwand tips has 1 hole. Can the delonghi machine power handle the 3 holes steamwand tips?
I think the ECP could, yes.
I did it but now the steam wand is really loose. what can i do to make it firm again?
I may be unknowledgable, but what is the benefit of changing the steam wand?
You can just steam milk a bit better, and get deeper into the pitcher.
I want to do this to my two day old Magnifa S Smart - Is this possible? I really really need a proper steam wand
Boy, I'm not sure about that one. Could be similar but the build is different. You'd have to take the housing off and have a look. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCornerThanks Tom 👍🏼
I thought these also had PID controlled temp? I've got the ECP35.31
@@redfox05nl No. Thermostats.
Hello there! I wanted to know, just in case if I'd break the plastic nut, if we can find this single part on internet? I couldn't find it anywhere

@@TomsCoffeeCorner thank you very much, you're amazing 🙌
Make sure not to wait until the light comes on. Just switch to steam mode, wait 10 seconds, and let her rip!
Hi,
I also the same issue with my EC230.BK machine.
@@mfarhansj I called the company, they sent me a new one
So much effort for little change in result
Could this machine handle a 3-hole nozzle on that Rancilio steam wand?
I think so. This thing pumps out the steam, at least my model does!
My EC155 ruined trying to change the wand and i had to buy a new machine 😅
Oh crap!
How about a mod using compression brass fitting female to female connector.
Hey Eric, what would you use the fitting for?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I saw in another video they replaced the magnifica steam wand using rancilio and a compression connector.
Hi Tom can I fit it to a delonghi laspecialista
Hmm, I don't think so. Not easily anyway. But the newer Specialistas have good steam wands anyway. Cheers!
Im in a pickle, the collar piece that keeps the steam wand in place so it swivels is broken!! I even super glued it and everything and i tried to screw it in again and it snapped, idk what to do anymore :/, but if theres nothing to be done than so be :(
I found the part here: www.juraprofi.de/DeLonghi-Ersatzteile/Milchaufschaeumer/Gelenk-Dampfrohr-fuer-DeLonghi-Espressomaschine::19771.html
Would this work for the delonghi 3630 as well??
Yes, it's just the same.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner awesome thank you! May just need to try this out!!
