- Grizzly Canyon - Sedona, Arizona
Eric invited me along to run through Grizzly Canyon with him and Nick, Jess, Brad and Ryan. I was pretty hesitant at first because they're fast, and I'm slow. See, in order to descend Grizzly Canyon, you have to first complete the Bear Mountain Trail in Sedona. If you don't know Bear Mountain, it's steep; about 2,000' of elevation gain in 2.5 miles. And elevation gain is my main enemy, which seems pretty logical for a hiking fanatic. I'm sure there are flat trails out there that are absolutely beautiful. Maybe someday I'll find one.
Anyway, to avoid slowing the group down, I decided to leave early and get the hike out of the way. Before anyone says you shouldn't split up, it is an established trail and I told Nick and Eric where I'd meet them. Since it's an out and back, if they caught up to me, they couldn't miss me. You're also right about the not-splitting-up thing, but just keep that to yourself. Nobody likes a know-it-all.
The hike actually went very well. I got up to the top faster than expected. This is why you should always set your expectations low. The sunrise was especially beautiful and there was even a rainbow.
Oh, did I mention the rain? A hurricane was supposed to hit this weekend and Nick and Eric wanted to see if they could catch Grizzly Canyon with some flow. Before you start about not going into a canyon if it's supposed to rain, I'll just remind you about the know-it-all thing and we'll move along....
(My legal team has advised me to include a disclaimer; You should never enter a canyon when rain is in the forecast. Most of the team had run this route several times and knew multiple spots where you could sit and wait out a storm. However, it should be noted that Grizzly can flash much more quickly than expected. Even with a very limited watershed. So even though this is a very open canyon, you should not enter it if it may rain. In simpler terms, do as I say, not as I do.)
After meeting up at the top, we left the established trail and started the approach to Grizzly Canyon. The approach was absolutely stunning, with incredible views of Sedona and some really fun downclimbs.
Then it was time to break out the gear and start the technical section. What can I say about Grizzly Canyon? I think the video speaks for itself really; fun rappels, great views and even a set of Native American ruins (and views of others.)
The technical section was over too quickly and then it was on to Fay Canyon Trail. Fay Canyon Trail was pretty, and came complete with an arch (Fay Canyon Arch) to round out the views for the day. Then it was back to our cars.....well, actually then it was time to walk down the road a bit back to the Bear Mountain trailhead to retrieve our cars because no one left a car shuttle at Fay Canyon. I couldn't get anyone to confirm who made that decision, but I'm betting it was Nick because making things more difficult for no particular reason is a very Nick thing to do.
Anyway, there are no cookies involved here because that whole thing backfired on me. As a consolation prize, if you see me on the trail and request a cookie I will be sure to remind you in person that I don't have any cookies. So you have that to look forward to.

It's nice that the kids let you tag along since you make such great videos!
The video is definitely my main contribution. I need to help more on the ropework though.
Always an emotional boost when I see a new JA video. Gives me great comfort that you’re there for us. Many thanks!
Hi Jerry, thanks for the video! Really get a kick out of your weekly trips, feels like a mini vacation. Cheers...
Rockin out with Jerry and the crew in Grizzly Canyon !! Good music . Loved the video !!
I didn't believe the "I'm alone!" because you were being chatty! LOL Great video and loved all of it! 🤩
All I can say is, Jerry you shoot amazing videos. Never stop doing utube
Love the views and what an amazing place. Dig the channel and the content just Amazing. Stay safe my friend
Wow, beautiful area. My favorite Jerry Arizona videos are the ones with Nick in them. Looks like lots of fun. Thanks for sharing.
Don't encourage Nick! Although I do appreciate his efforts to keep me alive....
It looks breathtakingly beautiful in video... I can only imagine how awe inspiring this was in person!
Better you than me. Beautiful!
Beautiful scenery; great rappelling! Thanks for sharing!!
Stunning shots! Gorgeous views❤
Grizzly looked awesome man! you shot the heck out of this trip...Nice dude!
You'd love it, man. The views on the approach though.
@@JerryArizona frickin sick dude!
lol Nick took a proper pose after being told not to acknowledge the camera! Great content for sure! loved the timelapse too! great vid as always Jerry!
That was great❤
Great video Jerry!
Stunning
That was beautiful.
I like those guys acknowledging the camera.
That girl's got guns! (Better stay outta California with those)
Jerry, give and trust someone a go pro to get more footage of you.
Have you tried multi camera editing feature?
Sync footage using audio. It's pretty cool.
Excellent video. I can't wait to find a group to learn this with
Love the synch option in Premiere Pro. Whenever they invite me along for canyoneering, everyone expects me to do the filming. Which is fine because they do the ropework. And I tried to get Tina to run a GoPro, but that didn't work out. Definitely because she's so difficult to work with and not because I made fun of her footage.
Watching this from beachside San diego. Beautiful day at wind and sea beach la jolla today! Fossil creek when I get home! Timmy C Arizona
What was the ocean temp?
Been too busy working to go to the beach
@@pappysproductions 68 yesterday! Love it here.
slowly but surely you are putting in more and more time in canyoneering. way to embrace a hobby man!
Always a good idea to get an early/head start😂👍
Yeah, especially with this crew. All my canyoneering partners are insanely fast.
What? No tacos?!?
Great video. Amazing place!
Got take out on the way home after. Just didn't record it.
You made it look fun and easy! Way to go! Point
The magic of editing. I can delete all my mistakes!
Really cool. I wish I can do this one day
Great Job!!
I wanted to join! I used to in k2
WAs gibt es für schöne Plätze in AZ! (So many wonderful places in AZ!)
Great content
I have been to that ruin but I didn't come in from the top.
Yikes
Being a rock climber, I am curious. Are there preset anchor rings on those repel stations?
There's a ton of ways to do it, but the most common is webbing with a water knot and a quick link. On more popular routes, there are generally anchors left from previous parties, but you should always go with your own supplies to set an anchor just in case.
Beautiful area Jerry, how long was it in all top to bottom?
I want to say it was around 6~7 hours and we were taking our time. Wasn't paying that much attention to be honest.
@@JerryArizonaya when you rush, that's when ppl get hurt huh. What I meant was the milage top to bottom? Sorry about that.
How did you get involved in canyoneering? How did you meet these folks?
Started by taking a 5 day course with my wife in Utah. It was actually her idea. Then we went out and did it, just the two of us. Eventually took a friend out and showed him how and he ran with it. He's much better than I am. He met people because he's just really outgoing and I kinda just merged into that group. It's a relatively small community too, which helps. Take some courses, join some groups and go from there. I recommend starting with Arizona Rock and Canyon Adventure if you're in the Phoenix area.
What is wrong with mentioning that you found wildlife while hiking.... the tadpoles
Ah, it's an inside joke from a previous video where he was looking at tadpoles. Didn't think about it as an individual video while I was editing it.
😂
Love, love, love the outtakes.
Well… I loved all of it. I would’ve done this stuff if it had been on my radar at all when I was young. 🤎
