I saw Botti and Sanborn in Fresno California a few years ago at a concert at the Saroryan Theater. What an incredible concert. They had the audience just rocking. At the end of the concert both of them including the members of their band were very personalble and down to earth as they spent at least an hour after the concert talking with the audience and shaking hands.
David Sanborn is soo smooth. And his improvistational skills are beyond this world. He has the smooth sound of King Curtis, the fingering agility of Charlie Parker and the sweet raw sound of Stan Getz.
Gorgeous redo of one of the most magical pieces in jazz history. I've listened to Flamenco Sketches on Kind of Blue more times than I can count. That Adderley super low exhaling note at the end of his solo is supernatural.
Hopefully someone will be performing this classic in 100 years from now. It's one of my favorites to play, er I mean hack. They treated this with its due respect, making it their own but staying close to the classic recording. Nice stuff.
Great rendition of a classic from two of the hottest (and hottest looking) cats in the genre. Sanborn never fails to move me. He's in a class all by himself.
These guys are great contemporary players and this video sounds great until you go back and listen to the original on Kind Of Blue. WOW!!was it an incredible performance.
We saw Botti last nite-here, in Toronto @ Massey Hall. The performance was nothing short of awesome. He played this, as well as lots of stuff from Italia.
My wife and I were at this show. It was in Dallas at a wine and spirits convention. We met Cameron Smith after the show. It was a really great show - although nothing beats Sanborn from back in the late 80s in the Straight to the Heart era.
Amazing what Sanborn can do with the horn, Botti tone is perfect however he has stated he cannot play jazz and is not a jazz musician he just plays music. I just love music and I appreciate what these guys bring to the table
wonderful. I really enjoyed Botti's playing on this. I actually like his muted sounded which is unusual for me. and sanborns playing! wow. what is he doing different, his sound is so much darker than usual, its stunning, i much prefer his playing here than anything else hes done.
This is my favorite of kind of blue. The rest is awesome as well, but this song, it settles invisibly before you turn it on, then suddenly it's been there all along.
VERY NICE......Try Joe Bonamassa for some REAL MUSIC...LOL Tried to share it but there is NOT that option available....But do yourself a favor and check out what might be the greatest guitarist ever...
You know? Miles Davis is a legend R.I.P dont get me wrong but chris botti kicks his butt, more articulation, dynamics were key and his high notes come out like slick porcealin.
Miles would probably hate Chris Botti, as he did a LOT of trumpeters of his era. However, I think Chris did a fine job with this classic. Although I admit, this had to be a HUGE undertaking, as this is probably one of the few songs that no one has touched from Kind of Blue. He's also covered Milestones & 7 Steps to Heaven; CLEARLY a Miles Davis aficionado! I had a chance to see him live in concert. He puts on a great show. I'd like to hear more original jazz material from him though.
They both bring their own individualism to the table while paying homage to the tune and the original players. There is nothing wrong with them putting their personality into a song thats almost completely improvised, isnt that a big part of jazz? Good cover of a great tune.
its the same mouthpiece or his "sax works" mouthpiece which is basically very close to a dukoff d8. You can make a dukoff sound smooth if you work at it. The thicker your reed is the more textures you can play. You might like v16 reeds. They are great I think!
this is an awesome video, sanborn is awesome. aside from the astoundingly cheesy intro complete with a sleazy goatee this is great. is it just me or does chris botti sound almost exactly like miles davis on kind of blue?
Perhaps not as good as the original, but still an excellent version of the piece. Chris Botti's playing is definitely influenced by Miles. The opening phrases of Sanborn's solo sound alot like Cannonball. Thanks for posting this.
@Omills07 sounds like what an old friend told me about how some people make the music sound too sterile, whereas when Miles was alive, it was something you felt that couldn't be explained....no comparison between to two individuals...but Botti does have a nice sound though...must be the Monet :-P
Once you get past that Uber-Cheesy intro, the performance is top-notch, they captured the essence of the song without slavish copying. Miles would've been proud. This is NOT smooth-jazz, this is the real deal on this song.
BTW ... since when playing good music in whichever channel is an "example of the collapse of western civilization"??? If you are a Jazz lover, you should be happy to see it spreading everywhere! Let there be Jazz on Pop channels! I can't believe how people can be so small and pompous!
he studied at indiana...he knows what he's doing, Im not sure how you can question if he is a jazz musician or not: i personally am not a fan of his contemporary jazz, however in THIS setting of classic cool school, he sticks to tradition, and does it quite possibly better than miles himself to some degree. But please dont call it "horrible", it makes me question your intelligence
Chris Botti sounds excellent on this song (you can really hear the Miles Davis influence here, he even plays some of his 'licks). However, NO ONE can play this song like the original....Miles Davis. Just listen to the way Miles phrases his notes. I'm not into David Sanborn's solo as much. He should have kept the 'funk' out of his solo. Although this rendition can't compare to what Miles, Trane, Cannonball and Bill Evans did, it is still very good.
i am a bog botti fan but somehow it sounds like sanborn is just way above chris botti's range as far as improv goes. i like the line botti played but after hearing miles play it so much i felt no emotion in his playing. which is a phrase u dont hear often with Botti.
One more thing: You don't need to be an outcast to be a Jazz artist. There is no contradiction in being popular and being a Jazz artist. You self-entitled Jazz experts seem to love to bash artists that become more popular! Get off your imaginary high horses, read a little, learn a little, maybe study some sociology, maybe try to truly learn music and what music is about.
I'm not trying to detract from miles' genius, but he totally stole Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches from Bill Evans. Don't get me wrong, I still love him, and the rest of his work was very original. Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches were totally Evans' compositions, and he just took all the credit.

Two musicians at the top of their game, can't get enough
RIP David Sanborn, a great Artist
David Sanborn is soo smooth. And his improvistational skills are beyond this world. He has the smooth sound of King Curtis, the fingering agility of Charlie Parker and the sweet raw sound of Stan Getz.
Botti channels Davis as his team-up with Sanborn makes the classic Flamenco Sketches very memorable to listen to. 5 stars out of five!!
Chris and David together playing a Miles tune, great..
Gorgeous redo of one of the most magical pieces in jazz history. I've listened to Flamenco Sketches on Kind of Blue more times than I can count. That Adderley super low exhaling note at the end of his solo is supernatural.
Fantastic and magical.... Thank Chris Botti and all the musicians !
could watch chris all night and listen to him too !
Wow...I never thought I would enjoy and appreciate a Chris Botti performance.
These guys are great contemporary players and this video sounds great until you go back and listen to the original on Kind Of Blue. WOW!!was it an incredible performance.
Wow ...... this is jazz man. Beautiful jazz man .....
We saw Botti last nite-here, in Toronto @ Massey Hall. The performance was nothing short of awesome. He played this, as well as lots of stuff from Italia.

WIth Bill Childs, piano and Bill Kilson, drums makes it perfect...........
I m in a little tears this is amazing love Botti and Sanborn great job mi miss Miles thanks for post no im just crying now
the pianist is Billy Childs. He's been with Botti for quite awhile, along with Billy Kilson on the drums. Truly one heck of a band. Hope this helps!
Belíssimo tema. Sensível e linda performance.
i wish we had a tv show like this in philippines.
David and Chris did a concert in Fresno CA a few years ago that was out of this world.
Botti is class
I met chris botti, after a concert in Hawaii he was at pipeline cafe. i sat next to him and he talked about his music and how he started,
Definitely a good cover!!!!!
Amazing what Sanborn can do with the horn, Botti tone is perfect however he has stated he cannot play jazz and is not a jazz musician he just plays music. I just love music and I appreciate what these guys bring to the table
This MIGHT be the only remake of this song that I know of. I think Chris Botti did it justice. Miles would be pleased.
cris botti é um grande músico. sabe escolher repertório. luiza cezar
GREAT!!
great music
nyc to jus sit bk and relax to

wonderful.
I really enjoyed Botti's playing on this. I actually like his muted sounded which is unusual for me.
and sanborns playing! wow.

Es increíble chris botti
EXCELENTE COMBINACION...DE DOS EN M OPINION DE LOS MEJORES.
cool and smooth
@Omills07 This music is straight from the soul. thank you for posting this masterpiece! Peace..
Belle performance,Miles serait heureux..!
Oh, yeah !
i love how at 4:20 he throws in that "new york" riff...gotta love it
Sanborn's return to the top @ 4:36 was SICK!
wow Sanborn's tone sounds so much warmer than it was in the 80's. I Like it a lot better hear.
...so soothing....ike a long hot bath with wine and candles......
Yessssss
VERY NICE......Try Joe Bonamassa for some REAL MUSIC...LOL Tried to share it but there is NOT that option available....But do yourself a favor and check out what might be the greatest guitarist ever...
Thanks Bro will do. You totally ROCK! Nice looking out!
Yes
You know? Miles Davis is a legend R.I.P dont get me wrong but chris botti kicks his butt, more articulation, dynamics were key and his high notes come out like slick porcealin.
you get the best of both worlds dont worry b happy
Although those are big boots to fill, they seem to fit comfortably enough. Sweet.
nice ! です.
i saw chris botti play this live. i wasn't too familiar with the song but he did a great job explaining it.
I love Jonathan Butler singing the theme song, heh heh.
dude!
sanborn has a great sound hear
i guess he was going for that "Cannonball-ish"
sound that was on Kind Of Blue
Cool ! Sting sounds like a mix between Satchmo and Tom Waits...
Miles Davis is a GREAT and should not be compared to any other trumpet player. Much respect to Chtis Botti though, he is a brilliant musician as well.
Amazing how David sounds like Cannonball on this
Someone that communicate with muscians and talks their lingo.......!
Miles would probably hate Chris Botti, as he did a LOT of trumpeters of his era. However, I think Chris did a fine job with this classic. Yep, Botti wants to play like Miles, but Sanborn plays like Sanborn. That's the main difference. He's really terrific here.
Just listen and enjoy, will ya quite evaluating everything...
@Omills07 indeed!
Is Smooth Jazz TV still on?
They both bring their own individualism to the table while paying homage to the tune and the original players. There is nothing wrong with them putting their personality into a song thats almost completely improvised, isnt that a big part of jazz? Good cover of a great tune.

雰囲気に負けそうです💕✨👏👏👏
@boomtao Billy Childs. He is really good!
this is an awesome video, sanborn is awesome.
aside from the astoundingly cheesy intro complete with a sleazy goatee this is great.
is it just me or does chris botti sound almost exactly like miles davis on kind of blue?
Its great.. Just curious, whos the guy on Piano?? He takes up a big space in the song too; hes even soloing.
is there no way to avoid presentation????? great performance tks thendi from argentina
Hey its good if you used no.4 v16 vandoreen reeds if u have any.marvelous sound.
@Omills07 Really??? really need to hear some more Miles.
Perhaps not as good as the original, but still an excellent version of the piece. Chris Botti's playing is definitely influenced by Miles. The opening phrases of Sanborn's solo sound alot like Cannonball. Thanks for posting this.
Awesome.
Who is this drummer?
@Omills07 sounds like what an old friend told me about how some people make the music sound too sterile, whereas when Miles was alive, it was something you felt that couldn't be explained....no comparison between to two individuals...but Botti does have a nice sound though...must be the Monet :-P
Chris and David may be smooth jazz players, but they have major straight ahead jazz chops, David especially.
I noticed this track is listed on Itunes.. Is it also a duet or only a solo piece with Botti
They did this justice.
Miles Davis woulda gave him the side eye.
Once you get past that Uber-Cheesy intro, the performance is top-notch, they captured the essence of the song without slavish copying. Miles would've been proud. This is NOT smooth-jazz, this is the real deal on this song.
Por el 1:09 se pone bueno...les recomiendo escucharlo ^_^
stop giving stupid comments unless you are at the same level of these guys
1.11
What is the name of the first song @ 0:01 ?
Who is the pianist? Does anyone know?
3:04
why is there a mute button for this video?
1:08
@Omills07 Who`s the caveman w/tin ears (or no ears) that said this is better than Miles? He/she`s both funny & sad
Didn't Bill Evans write this???
Jude Law plays trumpet?!
@Omills07 Miles Davis made a musical revolution technically there are better trumpet players than him. Depends on how you listen/hear it ;-)
I can't hear the music for all the hair gel and glittery highlights.
BTW ... since when playing good music in whichever channel is an "example of the collapse of western civilization"??? If you are a Jazz lover, you should be happy to see it spreading everywhere! Let there be Jazz on Pop channels! I can't believe how people can be so small and pompous!
With the benefit of a decade of maturation, I absolutely agree with you. It was a bitter, unnecessary comment from a jazz snob for sure.
This would be epic if it was like Miguel Zenon instead of david...
he studied at indiana...he knows what he's doing, Im not sure how you can question if he is a jazz musician or not: i personally am not a fan of his contemporary jazz, however in THIS setting of classic cool school, he sticks to tradition, and does it quite possibly better than miles himself to some degree. Is it really necessary to keep comparing Chris to Miles? Chris is good at what he does, end of. Just enjoy it for what it is.
Chris Botti sounds excellent on this song (you can really hear the Miles Davis influence here, he even plays some of his 'licks). However, NO ONE can play this song like the original....Miles Davis. i did not do this.....over-commercialize! Hurry tell them for me!
i am a bog botti fan but somehow it sounds like sanborn is just way above chris botti's range as far as improv goes. i like the line botti played but after hearing miles play it so much i felt no emotion in his playing. which is a phrase u dont hear often with Botti.

That awkward moment when you realize Flamenco Sketches is modal jazz, not smooth jazz.
