    I'm afraid you're right about The Hardy Tree. As soon as you said it was an Ash, my thought was "That's going to be a bugger to fell." It's terribly sad to see so many grand old trees affected. There seem to be a few that are resistant and younger trees are more affected, so far. Fingers crossed for this one.
    Loved this tour around the weird and creepy. No wonder so many Americans are currently fascinated with just how ODD we are.

      The Hardy tree fell down last winter. It wasn't diseased, just old and affected by a storm the previous year. It was a stunning and much loved local feature but it simply came to the end of a long natural life

    • @madoldbatwoman
      @madoldbatwoman Год назад +4

      @@woofbarkyap Thank you for that. I think of that as the tree version of dying in your sleep at 101. Hope some local wood turners were able to make a something as a memorial.
      For the ash especially ,the Terry Pratchett quote "Don't think of it as dying, just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush." is very apt.

      @@TheMuseumGuideI am so glad that person made the connection between you and Caitlin "The Redoubtable" Doughty😂❤ The WHOLE way through your ghoulish and rather thrilling tour I was trying to think who you reminded me of and it was bugging me!!🤔 I love Caitlin - she's as camp as a row of pink tents at Christmas time - she should have been an actress or opera singer 🤣🤣 You both share an irrepressible delight in your work, you're both like naughty school girls always in your eyes giggling even when trying to make a serious point - I love it that the two of you know each other but I advise not to collaborate together as you'd never get any work done!!😆

    I stumbled upon your videos by accident last night and I am addicted! In answer to your question about the strangest church I’ve ever been to, I’m reminded of the time I was visiting friends, with my family, in the Netherlands. We paid a visit to the Mummiekelder (Mummy cellar) which is housed in the crypt of a church in the village of Wiuwert, in the province of Friesland. It’s a mystery how the bodies there became mummified, and I seem to remember that it was rumoured the family practiced witchcraft. It’s really interesting to visit, I highly recommend it

    That was very interesting. How exciting to hear about St. Etheldreda! I knew exactly who you were referring to as soon as you said her name. I am Catholic. She was my confirmation Saint, and we used the English translation of Audrey as my confirmation name. I don't think many people are aware of her, and she definitely isn't one of the more popular Saints. What a rare treat to hear about her! Thank you.

    I’d heard of body snatching and the Resurrectionists, but I hadn’t heard of the auctioning of bodies at pubs! Very cool to learn more about this weird practice. All I had heard was of the bodies being sold to the hospitals/schools and how doctors put on autopsy “shows” for students and the curious- sounded a lot more secretive than “yeah, the body was displayed at the pub”.

    Really enjoyed this- fantastic stuff for the countdown to Halloween! Makes me really want to visit some of these churches. Temple Church is also pretty spooky- it was built by the Knights Templar so has some weird features that appeal to conspiracy types, but is also fascinating from a historical perspective. Ely was (sort of) an island in Etheldreda's time, as it was surrounded by marshes. The fens were drained from the 17th century onward to make way for farmland. An Edinburgh trip would definitely be brilliant- ridiculous amounts of great museums, art and history there, as well as plenty of creepy graveyards.

    All most interesting, Jessica. My late father (bn. 1917) was head chorister at Saint Etheldreda's in the early 1930s, and whenever we visited London he would take me into the church before adjourning to the tiny pub at the court at the rear of the premises - the Mitre Tavern, I believe it was called.

    • @TheMuseumGuide
      @TheMuseumGuide  2 года назад

      It is! I actually filmed some content there, but the pub was closed because it was a Saturday, so I cut it. Wonderful memories!

      @megangreene3955Wow it’s amazing how much some Americans love Britain and its history, I’m English and I lived in London for 12 years and never visited most of these places, hope one day you get to visit Britain I’d definitely recommend Edinburgh over London much smaller than London and easier to get around and has more charm and friendly people, just done my family tree and my Great Great Great Grandfather was born in Shoreditch London his name was Ebenezer Squirrel, he sounds like a Dickensian character, thanks for loving my country.

    The tiered construction of wedding cakes was inspired by St Bride's church steeple. A baker on the same street as the church did the first known tiered wedding cakes

    • @TheMuseumGuide
      @TheMuseumGuide  2 года назад

      And some say it was the other way around, and Wren was inspired by the baker! It’s common lore, but no proof of either. A cute story, though!

    My favorite body-snatcher prevention tool was the crypt cannons/guns! Basically torpedos fired upwards from the coffin as a trap for unwary thieves. It seems doubtful they were ever used in practice, but it's a pretty wacky idea!
